When you step in, the General Public has a great NY / Chicago Gastropub feel. There was definitely a lot of care put into making this place have great ambiance. I ordered an old-fashioned and the bacon burger (with cheese). Old-fashioned was nice and strong, which was to my liking and bacon burger was cooked properly to order. Only complaint was that some of the fries were cold and a bit soggy and not so numerous on my plate-- this is Houston where we're generous, not stingy like Seattle! The burger was good (not the best or most unique I had, but well-executed despite being a little bit steep in price ($16.95 pre tax). Service needs some work! Our waitress was nice, and I could tell she was trying, but it took way too long to get our water and drinks out! I wish they just gave water by default like every other restaurant instead of having customers have to ask. The place seems slightly understaffed or not well-trained. Overall just ok! Probably would go elsewhere in Houston for food value-wise / service-wise-- but would come back for a cocktail at the bar here! read more

Came here on a Friday night because I couldn't resist trying the fish & chips because the pictures look great and they did not disappoint. The fish and chips came out quickly and it was so fresh. Only thing is the bottom of the fish pieces were a little soggy so the batter was soft other than that it was perfect. I also got the TGP salad and it was such a refreshing mix. Ordered the crab hush puppies and the savoriness of the cornmeal plus the dusted powder sugar was perfection. Drinks were well mixed and service was really quick and welcoming. It was oddly slow for a Friday so there was no reason service shouldn't have been good but it did make me a bit nervous to see it that empty but nonetheless it was great. Now this place is 5/5 stars for food and service! Though the start of the visit was not 5 stars as the main host we checked in gave us attitude, it definitely doesn't dampen their score. We were seated immediately and the our waiter was at another table but the manager came by, said hello, introduced himself, took our order, and delivered our drinks himself. He was actively involved throughout our visit even when our waiter was at our table. This attention was very pleasing as he is a joy to talk with and is very conscientious to make sure our table also had uninterrupted time. The chef even came out and chatted with us for a bit. We had some mimosas (you NEED them too because they were $1 on the Saturday we went), chicken wings, and shrimp and grits. My goodness, the flavor and spice were phenomenal. I could eat their shrimp and grits every day. The other people I was with all said the same thing about their meals, it was delicious and they want to come back and have them again! Food: Honey hot chicken - 6/10, for me I needed a little more flavor to the chicken they were ok. The crunch was on point! Artichoke spinach dip: - 9/10, it was good I'm a fan. On the weekends they have $1 mimosas, and their half chicken is pretty good. The ambiance and decor is nice. However, I took off two stars because the three times I tried out this place the following issues presented themselves: 1. I ordered their chopped salad, and chicken that came with it was over cooked and extremely dry the first time. 2. Second time, we went with a party of 8 and one of our friends wanted to order shots for the group, and we were told to sit down rudely by a waitress. Then the waitress took forever to come get our drink orders. When we finally got our drinks, two jack and coke orders weren't mixed, and we had to sit and mix. The old fashioned drinks were watered down. It wasn't even like the place was super busy. Hardly anyone at the restaurant. 3. The place is great to have a date. It's just extremely loud and hard to have a conversation with someone because music is fairly loud. I do love that we can scan a QR code to view the menu. Visited 07/26/24, and hadn't been in a few months. To my shock not only had they ended to incredible happy hour, but they took the cheeseburger sliders off the menu. Their HH was the best deal in town, but now it's particularly subpar, lacking any food options. The great HH was the reason I tolerated the routinely slow service. First time here and I actually really liked it mostly because they have a happy hour menu daily! The food on the HH menu is $3 @ 3pm, $4 @4pm & $5 @5 which was nice! My tab was only 10 bucks and I got the mule, sliders & tater tots. The sliders were yummy with bacon & the tots surprisingly were so good! Went here with a huge group of coworkers after a work meeting in Houston. There were probably 16 of us total and the fact that they were able to accommodate us with no issue was pretty darn impressive. They moved all of the tables together so we had one giant long table. We were in the main dining area and there was another big party in the bar area who were seated SUPER close to us and they were walking up everywhere and standing right next to us. It was really loud in there given the two big groups. They should have separated the two parties into different rooms. But that's the only reason I docked a star. Otherwise, the service was great. Very attentive for a party this big. Our waiter was really on top of it with drinks. We also ordered lots of the appetizers to share and had enough plates to go around. I ordered the burger and fries and really enjoyed it. All told, I would go back. And would recommend as a place that can accommodate larger groups. read more

I used their event room there to just my brother's 50th Bday party. There was a total of 17 of us and I worked with Ingrid to coordinate all the details. I was thankful that she was a to work within my budget. The day of the event Alyssa our server did a fabulous job of making sure everything came on a timely fashion. Everyone loved the appetizers and all came out right on time! Alyssa then took everyone's order as they snack on the appetizers and food can out in a reasonable time as well. We did cake at a specific time and everyone was able to continue mingling and all checks were closed out so the entire group could walk over to the Music Box theatre for our 730 show time! Timing was very important for us to make it at 7 to the show get our drinks of choice and seated on time! Thank you Alyssa for a job well done and making sure all was executed flawlessly!! I've been here twice and overall have a good time. It's always unusually slow and I'm not sure why since the plaza is always busy. Their happy hour is a pretty good deal but their drinks aren't always the best. We decided last minute to go to city centre for new years and went here to avoid the ridiculous new years plate prices. Again, it was super slow but the staff was friendly and timely. I don't recommend the ranch water, or wasn't good. But the charcuterie board was good and we both got fish and chips which was a massive portion - we could've shared that plate and left full lol. Best happy hour! They have a happy "hourly" menu EVERY DAY from 3-6 including weekends which has drinks/bites for $3 at 3pm, $4 at 4 and $5 at 5. The drink list is large and includes wines, draft beers, ranch waters, margaritas, martinis, and old fashions. Their "featured" happy hour cocktail changes frequently which makes it fun! You can see their menu online on their website. They also have hh bites as well - their crab hush puppies are so delicious with the heavenly maple butter and the slider duo is yummy as well. I enjoyed the grilled cheese bites too! I thought the daily tots were good but not as good as the other bites. Quality has definitely taken a hit since the pandemic passed. They used to have the best happy hour in town. It's like they lost the plot. They used to have maybe 15 drinks on the happy hour, now they have maybe 4 drinks on the happy hour to choose from (which includes a tiki punch that is really off brand for this place). They use to have sliders, meatballs, grilled cheese, daily tater tots, all on the happy hour. A couple months ago I went they reduced the happy hour to 3 food items. Then I went today and they removed all food from the happy hour. We were served by someone named Gabby who honestly wasn't that nice. She forgot our appetizers with no apology. This is the second time I had her with two different people and both parties found her unpleasant. It's unfortunate to witness the decline of a favorite restaurant. I am certain the 4 star review score is testament on how the establishment was previously run. I give it a year before the yelp review reflects the changes to the restaurant. read more
