Kaila took care of us and her service was excellent, she was attentive, friendly, and offered some great recommendations. While the menu is somewhat limited, everything we ordered came out hot, fast, and really tasty. Everyone in our group enjoyed their burgers, and I especially loved the Brussels sprouts, shrimp salad, and the crab puffs. Parking can be a bit of a hassle in the area, but there is a parking garage adjacent to the restaurant which makes it manageable. Came here on a Sunday for brunch. Not sure if it's the location or if the place isn't popular, but it was fairly empty. Definitely fine by me! Let's get to the food. The Brussel sprouts and crab hush puppies were great. The breakfast skillet, I could have done without. It had absolutely NO flavor. Luckily I asked for some sour cream and they were able to provide it. That's the only reason I was able to slightly enjoy the dish. The drinks. The mimosa was perfect. Hard to mess that up though right? I asked if they had any stouts and if so, if they could provide a sample. I'm so happy I asked for a sample and didn't just order the "one" stout they had. First and foremost, I patronized both Bowl & Barrel next door and the General Public. The host Tiana was amazing. She handled our large crowd with ease and efficiency. Even if she was overwhelmed the customers could not tell. She answered every question with patience and a smile. I ordered the happy hour lemon drop and it was good. HOWEVER, one of the main reasons I love the General Public is for the $3, $4, $5 happy hour. Hearing that they have discontinued that was a major disappointment. The drinks are still discounted as they are half off but that novelty will surely be missed. I hope that in the future the higher ups will consider the possibility of bringing that back. I'd also like to thank the GM, David, for coming and checking on my group. He made us feel welcomed and wanting to come back despite the changes....but bring it back!!!! read more

Intro: I have now been to The General Public three times (twice in CityCentre and once in San Antonio). Both times in Houston have been for drinks. This regional chain is located in CityCentre which means your best bet is parking in the complimentary parking garage. Ambiance (4/5): The General Public is a visually appealing bar and restaurant. The decor is elegant and comfortable. There's seating at the bar and plenty of semi-circular booths. I have sat at both. Service (4/5): Not the fastest but they do the job. Above average service on both of my visits. Food (N/A): While I haven't had food at this location, I had their duck wings at their San Antonio location which I recommend. How often do you see duck wings on a menu?! Drinks (4.5/5): Interesting cocktail list along with a solid beer list. Wine too. I went with a tiki drink on my last visit. Overall, their cocktail list is pretty creative. And here's the coolest thing: at sundown, each day, if you're there, you get a complimentary shot. I have never seen another restaurant do this: awesome concept. The sun goes down and we celebrate! I absolutely love the food here. I usually get the chicken sandwich and the sweet pickles are a great touch on it, I always ask for extra. They have two house made ranches, regular and jalapeño. Both are good and I'm not a ranch person. Fries are hand-cut, which I hope they keep because so many restaurants start out that way and then change it over time. Please don't, they are delicious. This was my first time coming with family, I usually come during lunch. We ordered the crab hush puppies, which came dusted in powdered sugar with a cinnamon sugar butter to spread on it. I was skeptical at first but it worked, they were great! My nephew wanted more! Spinach artichoke dip was delicious too, but we did need more chips so that would be my only critique. Great ambiance especially for a happy hour. We parked at the garage and walked to the location since there's limited metered parking in City Center. We also made a reservation because it's busy on a Friday. They had some great choices for restaurant week and they were a good portion unlike other places that serve smaller. For an appetizer I got the Kung Pao chicken lettuce wraps which if you don't like spicy is doable but additive. The stuffed mushrooms are also good. For the main meal I had the harvest bowl with shrimp. For dessert they were small desserts in a jar. I got to try the lemon mousse and the cheesecake, which were both filling even though they were small because the harvest bowl is large. Three stars for the lackluster bar service. No one ever checked on us, asked how our food was.. they'd walk on by and never say a thing. We had to ask for more water, the check.. and the people that sat next to didn't have their counter bussed for over 10 minutes after they sat down. The HR crew needed a little happy hour because adulting is hard! So the choice was easy when they asked where to go! I came here a few months back and loved the bar setup and the ambience, and I knew the HH was great for everyone's pocket! When we got there we thought our group was going to be smaller so we sat in a booth by the bar, but as we all started to arrive and food and drinks came, we knew the table wouldn't fit us all, so the host and MOD were more than accommodating to get us to a bigger table, which worked out great for our group! Mariah was our server and she was a dream! She was super attentive with all of our drinks and food, checking in when seeing we were getting low on liquid courage! Clearing plates and glasses as the evening went on, which is one thing that I ALWAYS love, as it's true attention to detail and makes it nice to not have a lot of dirty dishes in your table whilst socializing! The one thing I love about the HH here is that the drinks start at $3 @ 3:00 and $4 @ 4:00 and so forth. I got the Pink Lady, which was delicious and one of my fave drinks here. Food wise we all ordered appetizers to share family style. We got the pretzel and beer cheese, chicken meatballs, sliders, stuffed mushrooms, lettuce wraps, crab hush puppies and fries. Came here with a girl friend for happy hour because I read they have a lemon drop on the menu. To start the bar was very under staffed for it to be a Friday. My drink was really good but my friend did not get her lemon drop because they have a rule of not making it with vodka under the happy hour price which I think is crazy. Rolled up here early September on a Wednesday afternoon to meet with a fellow friend/YELPER for happy hour. We immediately went to the bar area to hang which had an easy-going crowd so ambiance was pleasant and chill although it was a bit noisy due to the tv's and music. Bartender got us some drinks and explained happy hour price variances. Drink prices are cheaper the earlier you arrive and then increase in $1 increments at the top of every hour (i.e. $3/drink at 3PM, then $4/drink at 4PM, etc.). Their cocktails are quite tasty such as their Lynchburg Sour and Spicy Goldrush (both are happy hour specials). The spicy goldrush is probably my favorite one with the bourbon and hint of sweetness & sourness. As for food, we went with the sliders, buffalo chicken meatballs, and the charcuterie board. I decided to try their Lynchburg Sour which was really good. Good enough that I stuck with that drink the entire time. For food I started with the slider duo, which is two mini sized burgers. Sliders were a good size with cheese, bacon, lettuce, tomato, and pickles on the side; probably my favorite appetizer. The buffalo chicken meatballs have 5 per order and served in this ranch/buttermilk dressing with carrots and celery; pretty tasty. The charcuterie board has an asssortment of meats and cheeses along with a sliced baguette, giardiniera, and some roasted pistachios. I decided on ordering a glass of merlot with it since wine pairs well with charcuterie. Good overall. The staff was very friendly and happy to answer questions we had and happy to accommodate the menu to my food allergy. We started our meal off with a round of drinks and their empanadas. The drinks were all very delicious, the spicy strawberry margarita was fresh and light with a little kick. The empanadas we fried to perfection with a light cripsy crust and the filling was very flavorful. For our meal we shared a bunch of appetizers. My favorites were the kung pao lettuce wraps and the daily tots, which at the time were a play on Buffalo chicken. Chicken caesar salad was super bland like u had no dressing and Dry af chicken. Steak was inedible like if u closed your eyes you wouldn't know u were eating steak and just chewing something that is saltier than the Dead Sea. Fish and chips was way too heavy of the batter then undercooked inside with side of soggy fries and watery version of their tartar sauce. Mushrooms bland with heavy amounts of cheese. Brussels sprouts soggy. Look, everything was awful. A lot of money wasted to go finish eating somewhere else to be full. read more

This spot is a solid 3.5 if there ever was one for me. The General Public, or G P is located on the southwest side of City Center. It's a modern chic spot near a bunch of other eateries. We came here for a quick work lunch and their menu consisted of "American" fare for the most part. We ordered the giant pretzel and the kung pao lettuce wrap. The giant pretzel itself was soft and had a good mouthfeel. However the cheese sauce itself and the mustard mixture missed the mark for me; my ideal cheese taste is a bit like the one Southern Yankee has for their pretzel. The kung pao lettuce wraps were lettuce leaves paired with a cooked mixture of chicken and peanuts with a dipping sauce. The flavor profile was a bit unexpected and didn't really taste very Asian to me. The actual meat of the dish was so chopped up that it was a bit hard to tell what you're eating. The traditional kung pao chicken sauce is pretty simple to replicate and it would've helped the dish out. I grabbed a bacon cheeseburger with fries for the main. Honestly a pretty solid cheeseburger with a patty cooked medium and a bun that's soft and toasty. Besides that, it was a basic run of the mill flavor profile for a burger. Overall, the menu lacks a bit of character in my opinion and the dishes are slightly hit or miss based off of what was ordered this time. Value wise, it's priced similarly to peers that are above the fast casual space but below the finer hipster dining space. read more
