I was hugely disappointed by my experience at The Gathering Table. I had heard nothing but great things and was genuinely excited to spend my one dinner in the area here. Unfortunately, nearly every part of the evening missed the mark. I sat outside at an uncomfortable table and waited at least 20 minutes before I was even acknowledged by a server. That set the tone for the entire night. Service remained extremely limited, and I barely saw my waiter throughout the meal. As for the food, I ordered several of the dishes I'd heard so much about: the cucumber salad, black cod, and garlic noodles. None lived up to the hype. The cucumber salad had very little flavor. The black cod was mediocre at best and certainly wasn't the standout dish I expected. And the garlic noodles were perhaps the biggest disappointment. They reminded me of the simple butter noodles you make for kids--and frankly, I've made better butter noodles at home. The one bright spot was the bread pudding, which my waiter recommended. It was genuinely delicious and easily the best thing I ate all evening. But one good dessert couldn't save the experience. Between the painfully inattentive service, uncomfortable outdoor seating, and mediocre food, the entire evening was a disappointment. I'm especially frustrated that, with only one dinner to enjoy while visiting the area, I chose to spend it here. Maybe I caught The Gathering Table on a particularly bad night, but based on my experience, I simply don't understand the hype. read more

They promise to bring you bold flavors using fresh seasonal ingredients in an elegant but approachable space. The Good: * Reservations via OpenTable™ * Free street and city lot parking nearby. * Dog-friendly outdoor dining * Right on the downtown strip in Solvang, next to our favorite bakery. * Nasi Goreng (Indonesian Fried Rice) was delicious and hit all the right notes. The fried chicken add-on was a different story, though... See below. * Caesar Salad had a delicious flavor, but Carissa found the salad to be a bit overdressed for her liking. I didn't mind it, but I like an obscene amount of dressing on my salads, so go figure? Salmon was a little undercooked for her liking, but again, I wouldn't mind it a bit pink. So, comme ci, comme ça. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ The Meh: * Not all the outdoor spaces are shaded/covered. * Prices are a bit absurd for certain items. Yeah, I know it's über-touristy Solvang, but jfc. $12-14 for a beer? And don't get me started on $12 for some of the blandest and most minuscule serving of fried chicken ever. * We arrived ten minutes early for our reservation, and the hostess seemed very annoyed that we were. In fact, she made us wait until it was time for our reservation to the very minute--despite the restaurant being at less than 10% capacity. * Service wasn't horrible, but I wouldn't say it was good, either. More on this below. The Ugly: * I ordered the Hazy IPA they had on tap, and when it arrived, I could tell it wasn't a particularly "hazy" Hazy IPA. But I figured some are better than others. For my second drink, I asked for the Clown Shoes IPA they had in a can. When the waitress returned with it, she admitted that the first beer she'd brought me was actually the same Clown Shoes IPA. Apparently, they'd run out of the Hazy IPA and decided to make the substitution without asking me. It's not a huge deal--I probably would have made the same substitution myself--but I definitely wouldn't have ordered a second one if I'd known it was the only IPA they had in-house. Like I said, it's not the end of the world, but for some reason, it just feels a little devious. Would they have made a substitution without asking a wine connoisseur? I would hope not, but now it kind of makes you wonder. Conclusion: Not a great experience here, from the hostess to the waitress to the food. I wish them luck. read more

I have to say I appreciate the bartender who assisted us with making sure the celebration of my birthday went great. We had a private room since we had a party of 13 and they accommodated extremely well. It was a little warm in the room but once we opened the doors it was perfect. It was a very beautiful environment. The drinks were delicious. Service was fairly quick when it came to drinks and appetizers. The main course did take a little longer but gave us time to enjoy the company of one another. The waiters and waitresses were kind. The food was definitely not what I expected. It was delicious and some items were out of my comfort zone but extremely definitely. I wanted to find a nice spot for dinner while in Solvang. Luckily we were able to make a same-day reservation. We arrived a little bit early to our reservation, and even though the restaurant was only about 20% full, we waited for about 10 minutes for someone to check us in. We were seated at the high top tables. We started off with the Roasted Cauliflower with miso white bean puree, arugula, chimichurri, and pecorino panko crumbs. The dish comes with large florets of cauliflower, so we had to cut it up into smaller pieces. For my entree, I got the Local Miso Black Cod with spinach, sesame dressing, and miso butter. The fish was moist and flakey. I enjoyed it! I also tried the New Zealand Rack of Lamb that had asparagus ratatouille, crispy potatoes, and lamb jus. I really wanted to love this restaurant. I was excited to try this restaurant. Something missed during my visit. We made reservations through Open Table. Our reservation was at 6:30 so the restaurant wasn't fully crowded. We were seated and it took 15+ minutes for someone to come to our table (we almost walked out). The restaurant is contemporary and sheik. We quickly placed our order for both appetizers and main dishes. We asked that the dishes come out as it was prepared and ready. Three dishes came out pretty quickly. We waited another 20 minutes for our fourth dish (miso cod) to come to the table. There were some major misses with the food: Hamachi appetizer. This raw fish dish was served at room temperature / borderline warm. It seemed like they served us fish that was sitting out on the counter all afternoon. Seemed rather unsafe to eat. Grade: C Chicken wings: 6 pieces of chicken wings. 3 prepared with a Korean inspired sauce. 3 prepared with a Japanese soy style. Grade B Uni Sushi. One Uni sea urchin, 4 pieces, served on a bed of rice. Side sauce. The Uni was fresh. The rice was plain / unseasoned. Hence the dish lacked flavor other than the ponzu sauce that was poured on it. $25 for 1 piece of sushi. Grade: B- Miso Black Cod: this dish was unique. It was more like a heavy soy glazed marinated fish. The marinade wasn't what we were expecting but sufficed. It was served on a bed of blanched spinach. Grade: B Service was off. Our main waitress was scarce throughout our meal. However the backup staff (beverages / water refills, changing plates) were outstanding. The manager on shift that night was really nice. We paid our bill and you could tell there was tension in the air. Maybe this was an off night, but I'm not sure if I'd rush back to this restaurant. I really hope that this restaurant does well. Came here with my family for Father's Day dinner. The ambiance and decor was quite fancy. We felt rather underdressed and felt a bit self conscious bringing our kids here, but they still accommodated us and made us feel welcome. The food is French-Asian fusion. I thought the overall quality of food was good but pricey for the portion. Felt like we were paying the high price for the ambiance more than the food. Citrus Soy Marinated Salmon tasted good but the rice that came with the dish seemed off. The texture reminded me of stale rice, although it could've been due to small cashew pieces mixed in with the rice. It also came with roasted beets on the side. My wife ordered GT Sliders, which comes with choice of chicken, beef, or portobello mushroom. There are two sliders so my wife picked one with beef and other with chicken. I tried a little bit of her chicken slider which was very good. The chicken was lightly fried with a nice crispy texture. Got Roasted Garlic Noodles and Sweet & Spicy Fried Chicken Wings for the kids. The noodles were just ok but the chicken wings were quite good. Initially thought the sauce on the wings would be sweet & spicy but they actually put different sauces on each of the wings. Three wings had spicy gochujang sauce and the other three had sweet soy glaze sauce. For dessert we got Thai Tea Bread Pudding and Caramel Budino. Thai Tea Bread Pudding was quite strong on the tea, almost to the point of being bitter. I wasn't quite sure I liked it but my 9-year old son seemed to love it, which was surprising. Caramel Budino was much better. It's a pudding with brown sugar and rum caramel, topped off with some whipped cream on top. Both of the desserts were quite small and pricey. We stopped in Solvang for brunch and decided to give this spot a try after walking by, checking out the menu, and noticing Chef Budi Kazali's name. The French-Asian fusion cuisine caught our attention. It wasn't too busy so we had our choice of seating in the Parisian-style bistro. We shared the breakfast burrito and the pancakes, and everything tasted incredibly fresh. I especially loved the pico de gallo and the sauce on the side. The buttermilk pancakes had a great chewy texture and were topped with a strawberry yuzu compote. Overall, we were really happy with our meal as you can tell they source seasonal and locally sourced produce. The large patio is very dog-friendly and while there's plenty of indoor seating, most guests opted to sit outside and enjoy the beautiful weather. Was looking for a place with vegetarian options and found this place. It's super cute outside, and the inside feels swanky. Everyone who worked with us were super nice and answered all our questions. Garlic Noodles (10/5 stars) - could use way more garlic but the taste was incredible. It's got a light creaminess to it. Poached Pear Salad (4.9/5) - this salad was almost perfect but the argula was dressed in an extremely sour dressing that almost ruined the salad, but all the other parts worked so perfectly together that you just gotta pretend the sour is not there. Housemade Scallion Focaccia with Garlic Chili Crisp (5/5) - the garlic chili crisp was addicting and had a good heat to it. Good experience here. We came for an early dinner. Our reservation was initially inside, but it was pretty loud inside, and my dad asked if we could sit outside with heaters. No problem (except they had high tops and my poor dad who has a smidge of mobility issues had some small challenges). They provided heaters aplenty. Tawni was our server and was friendly and helpful! We got the charred cabbage (probably my favorite of the night), some miso black cod (super tender but a bit on the salty side), roasted cauliflower, garlic noodles, and the lamb chops (lollies - I felt like these could have been bigger pieces, for the price). We ended with the Thai tea bread pudding, which was good. Ok, honestly, everything was a bit heavy-handed in terms of flavor - just this side of salty. The fusion aspect of this restaurant is super fun! I would probably give 4.5 stars if I could. There were items I have never tried that I really enjoyed like the smoked eggplant that had a light breading on it and when you took a bite it melted in your mouth. This was part of the lamb entree served also with a curry type sauce and potatoes. This was a very unique twist on an entree that seems to served very similar ways at other restaurants. We also absolutely loved the mussels that had Thai flavors busting through. The roasted garlic noodles were also a top contender. The miso cod was also delicious just a little on the small side since they paired it with sautéed spinach only. There was not one item we did not enjoy. The restaurant was pretty empty on a Sunday evening so the service was great up until we got our last course and we never saw our server again who was in the kitchen. We did have two other workers come up to our table after we were done eating to see how we enjoyed everything. It just would have been nice to see our server again. We were passing through Solvang after a trip up the coast from LA and stopped at the Gathering Table for Sunday Brunch. We were seated right away on the beautiful front patio, enjoying the ambiance, the tastefully appointed tables, and handsome place settings. The servers were attentive and helpful, and most importantly, brought us delicious plates of food! The coffee was great too! We came in for SY Restaurant Week and enjoyed the price fixe menu of 3 course for $30. The Thai Coconut soup was very tasty and the pork loin was amazing. Really like the rice. And we finished the meal with a chocolate mouse. Normally during these events the portions can be a bit smaller but we were really full by the time we got to the dessert course. The staff were helpful and nice and Chef Budi stopped by to check on our table. Everything is right about this restaurant. When you walk in the door, the ambience is excellent. The staff is friendly and knowledgeable, and the chef is outstanding. We ordered the mussels, which were done with a Thai curry coconut sauce, and was unique and excellent. The focaccia bread was almost as good as I make at home. Service was excellent as we were seated very fast and the staff were very fast to take orders, provide drinks, and were overall extremely friendly. The food wasn't worth the price though. We ordered the Pan Fried Duck Breast and the Miso Black Cod. The food was cooked well, but the taste wasn't there. It seemed like the vegetables had more flavor than the actual entrée itself. Service and food were both fantastic! When we started to walk onto their patio, we were greeted by a friendly gentleman who then held the door for us. We checked in for our reservations and decided to sit outside for dinner. They set us up under a heat lamp and turned on another one to make it nice and warm. Tawni came by to take our drink order but we weren't ready. Right away, we could tell service was going to be great for the evening. Amazingly, everyone from the hostess to the bussers and food runners and server were attentive, efficient, and friendly. It felt like as soon as a plate was empty, someone was there to take it away or wipe the table to prepare for the next round. At one point, our entrees arrived as our appetizer plates were being cleared but new plates and flatware appeared quickly with an apology. The wind picked up outside and after my husband got smacked in the face with a menu, we decided to go inside. Tawni took our order while a table was being set up and then she escorted us inside to a cozy table with a booth and chairs. Our dining experience continued without a pause. The sparkling water flowed into our glasses and drinks arrived. We were all set. Everything we had was absolutely delicious and plated beautifully. The table shared the Beef Tartare and Cauliflower for starters. We all loved the tartare which had the perfect amount of saltiness and seasoning. It went well with the endive and shrimp chips. My son's sliders were juicy, served with yummy fries that were not oily and had the right texture. Three of us shared the Salmon, Miso Cod, and Duck Breast. Each dish was prepared outstandingly. The Cod was paired well with sesame spinach while the Salmon was served with an amazing chard that was a tad spicy in a good way plus rice with cashews and peanuts. And the Duck was cooked nicely and had a five spice sauce. It was all so good. The night ended with an Espresso Martini and Cheesecake. Most of the local eateries were packed but as we happened upon The Gathering Table, it didn't look as busy as the other places, but were quoted a 25 minute wait. I ran inside to use the restroom and noticed a bunch of empty tables, and assume the 25 minute wait was due to staffing. But after we were seated, I observed all the other people walking up, not being made to wait like we had to. Honestly, that alone made me feel some kinda way, so they lost a star for it. Our waitress was lovely and attentive...but I didn't care for the hostess. We were seated outside at one of the large tables...glad it was pleasant enough to do so. I had the pancakes and a side of bacon. My girls had the breakfast burrito, sis had the Cesar salad with Salmon and my niece had the shrimp tacos. Everyone enjoyed their meals. This place is easily the best restaurant in Solvang. The Japanese French fusion is what makes it stand out. It's a necessity since Solvang is comprised of many steakhouses and simple palettes. I was blown away by the vegetable dishes. The charred cabbage was definitely a stand out. I love how it incorporated the peanut sauce and almost was a play on a Thai flat wide noodle dish. We chose two non-alcoholic cocktails, which were well-balanced and worked well with our food. We shared the cauliflower appetizer and a side of the garlic noodles, which were incredible. The mussels entree, with its creamy sauce and gentle spicy kick, was unique and particularly delicious. We shared the banana cheesecake for dessert, which may be the best cheesecake we have ever had. Came to Solvang with my husband for a quick weekday getaway and found this place scrolling through Yelp. The lamb is what lured us here. We dined here on a December Tuesday night. We were seated right away in a cozy nook with no reservation. We ordered: New Style Hamachi ($23) Miso Potato Leek Soup ($15) Indonesian Coconut Curry Lamb Shank ($43) which the waitress said they added yesterday to the Chef Specials Local Miso Black Cod ($39) We thought the miso cod was the best then 2nd was the soup then 3rd the lamb and lastly the hamachi. The miso cod was so tender, soft, and succulent. My only gripe about the soup was that the spoon was so thick that it was hard to scoop the soup. I really enjoyed the hints of citrus in the lamb dish. Don't get me wrong the lamb shank and hamachi were tasty and satisfying it's just the miso cod and soup were better in our opinion. The service was attentive, the ambiance is nice, this is a place I would come back to whenever we come back to Solvang. read more

A Cocktail Program That Needs Some Work Solvang has never quite delivered on the drinks-and-dinner front for us, and after years of loyalty to SY Kitchen, Mattei's, and Bar La Côte, we finally let curiosity pull us somewhere new. It's a decision we came to second-guess before the appetizers arrived. The space itself is cavernous, perhaps a touch too much so. We were seated immediately on a last-minute whim, in a dining room so generously tabled it bordered on impersonal. What the restaurant lacks in intimacy, it makes up for in warmth of service; our hostess was a genuine bright spot, and our server was equally sweet and attentive. The ambience, while pleasant enough, could still benefit from dimmer lighting and a soundtrack with more personality. It was the cocktail list that had drawn me in, and it's where the evening faltered most. I ordered with real anticipation, being someone who delights in a well-balanced, thoughtfully built drink, and what arrived, at $18 a glass, missed the mark: bitter, flavorless, lacking any real craft. My husband felt similarly about his own choice. A glance around the room told part of the story, an empty bar, and not a single other cocktail in sight. In retrospect, that should have been a hint. Dinner registered as merely fine: portions large to the point of excess, seasoning a bit heavy-handed. I'd enjoyed this chef's cooking before, during his tenure at the Ballard Inn, which made this meal a little more disappointing by comparison, a kitchen coasting rather than composing. Beautiful ambiance. Great menu and wine list. Raw duck breast made me ill later that night. I get that duck breast is often served rare or medium rare with a pink center. But this was so rare it could not be sliced with a steak knife, and everything other than the skins can only be described as raw. I asked for it to be cooked a bit more and although they brought it back to the table with a heat warning as if the plate had been in a broiler, it was just warm and there was no real difference in the appearance of the meat. I have ordered duck breast other places and have not had this experience. Do not recommend. The noodles we also ordered were excellent as was the miso chocolate cake. Overall, the experience would have been fine if not for the duck. But that experience was so horrible we won't be back. read more

I went in on a Sunday evening with my friend and was excited to experience the range in flavors that The Gathering table had to offer. I enjoyed the food, with the steamed mussels being my favorite thing we tried! The lamb was also fantastic! The only reason I'm not giving it 5 stars is because the service was a bit of a miss. The restaurant was primarily empty and our actual server didn't come around much, there was other random staff but we weren't clear on who was doing what and it felt strange. In the end we ended up handing our check to the server in the kitchen because it was taking so long. Despite that, I would 100% recommend coming here for some wonderful bursts of flavor!
