The owner was really nice and let us come in and explained how to become a member and all that good stuff. It def was a fun Speakeasy cause you don't know it's there unless you know what to look for because as you enter it's just a store that sells beer and snacks and that all. They have different varieties of beer here for purchase as well. As we came in the vibes are so chill not a very big place but enough to come hang with friends and have a beer on tap. They have an outdoor patio with heaters and TV's to catch a game as well. They sell some snacks but you are able to bring your own food which is really neat. Since we are not members we had to pay a $5 fee. The door to the back was a bookcase that he opened for us. Cute spot to just hang out. They only sell beer and some random chips. It's a speakeasy with a secret bookshelf entrance at the back of the Valley Brewers. Awesome vibe and beer selection. Jamming to classic rock while drinking bourbon barrel aged stouts currently. They have a nominal daily membership fee to be a part of the club or you can join to become a member for a year. You cannot find this kind of rotating beer selection around. Great job, The BackRoom. We stopped here after going to Solvang Brewery because we wanted to bar hop but no are specifically trying other beers in the area. We were surprised to walk into a beer shop with a nice gentleman who could tell we looked lost but when I asked about the bar the said it was a membership bar but since it was our first time he let us in as visitors with a pass to what I now know is a speakeasy. Super cool entrance which explains unassuming the beer shop. We were welcomed and impressed by the beer selection on tap. The server was very knowledgeable and the patrons were all extremely friendly and welcoming. We struck up a few conversations about beer, about the locals and just general chit chat with good beer and good people. They also sell snacks and there's an outdoor patio and games to play, things to read, and just a very cool atmosphere overall. Nothing snooty or pretentious about this place. It's great to be in a comfortable setting with mature adults who just love beer! Highly recommend place to chill and slavtually conversate with fellow beer admirerers. I am a sucker for speakeasies. $5 entrance for non members, no problem. I have no problem paying for entrance. I remember visiting in 2020 and it was booked so I wasn't able to see "the backroom". I came back again this past weekend 12/9. I called asking if there was availability for a non member since it was so busy this weekend with Julefest going on. The lady who took my call was somewhat rude and kept saying she can only take me if there was space which I understood, but I asked if she had space in the next 15 minutes since I was down the street. She kept saying she doesn't know. So I asked, can I come by and see if theres space? Or do you have a better time I can come by? I took my chances and walked to the establishment anyway. There was no one at the store so we waited. A lady came out and we asked about the backroom. She just pointed to the book shelf door. We waited to be let in, but she just pointed again at the door. Okay. So in we went. Okay cool... speakeasy vibes but then you just enter the bar area with a patio. Local California beers and wines, no cocktails. Our hotel person told us about this hidden gem. I knew I would love it as soon as she told me "u go through a secret door". So, of course, had to check it out. I had no idea what the door was... so of course we had to ask the lady that worked there and she told us. You walk through the bookshelf!! If you're not a beer person, have no worries, they have iced tea and coffee as well. The seating inside is pretty limited but there is more outside - with 2 TVs. I'm not a beer person, so I spoke with the lady that worked there and told her what I'm into and she let me try some and I found one. I think this was the first time I actually drank a whole beer by myself lol. I fell in love as soon as I saw the sign that said "i love dogs and beer". Its dog friendly, they have water bowls out for them, and they have succulents! Sorry, but I dont know anywhere else that would be that amazing. The details grabbed me right away. The bookshelf accents are continued on the other side of the hidden door. The antique telephone hanging on the wall adds to the vintage ambiance. The tap area, small indoor seating area, and the outdoor patio provide several seating options. Great selection of craft beer. Taps are rotating and feature breweries from all over. Cute hideaway. Nice speakeasy located behind a bookshelf. It's a members only spot but mention the guest fee and you should be fine. Couldn't tell you how much the fee for 2 was though I spent $40 on the fees and one glass of wine. It's intimate and quiet in the back, a nice escape from the busy streets of Solvang. Whole experience there was amazing. From the owner to the bartender. The environment was super welcoming. Reading previous reviews after leaving this place, I would have never imagined her treating anyone like this. She was interacting with our whole group, playing around with all of us and definitely made our experience so much better. Seeing people write things about her treating "people of color" different is pretty ridiculous when my whole group was literally Hispanic, we were all in there speaking Spanish and no one made us feel any different. Perfectly average for a place to visit, grab a pint, taste a few different beers, then leave. The inside seating is limited and not exactly comfortable for longer visits, but the outside seating is nice so I'd suggest you sit there if you plan to stay longer than one glass. The entrance is through the bookshelf at the end of the hallway of the storefront. Put the shelf and you'll find a small room in the back, hence the name. Initially, it's a fun place mainly due to the entrance novelty that makes you feel like you're in a drunken murder mystery, but once that wears off, you realize you're just in a room drinking beer. There are games available like Joking Humor and standard poker decks, but if you're not 22 years old and don't want puns with your pilsner, then you might not set up camp here. We had a good time and I enjoyed the lazy dog, Basil, but I can't say that this is my favorite place to have a drink. Fun spot if you're a group of women getting drunks at 2pm or if you're in your 20's and enjoy a heavy serving of kitsch. You'll find me down the street at Good Life. read more

EXTREMELY disgusted by the staff here. We arrived here because the business hours listed they were open but the woman turned us away. She was rude and didn't care to even to explain that they were closed. We could hear music being played and people in the background, so it definitely seemed like people were back there. I asked if we could say hello to the dog and she said " I don't think that's going to happen." I've seen reviews on here about POC being treated differently and racism, but now I've experienced it for myself. Will not return. read more

The unmarked entrance and lack of signage give it a speakeasy vibe at first, but once inside it's a bright little space with a private patio. Good selection of different breweries and styles on tap. A speakeasy in Solvang? It was quite a surprise to find that there was a speakeasy in a town such as Solvang. It was located about a street off the main street of the town inside of a brewery kit store. How fitting. The secret entrance was definitely cool, but not too original. After going into the backroom (haha), there are two different area, one inside and one outside. Outside is most likely where you will be sitting because it is really nice out there. It is set up like an enchanted garden. They have a really extensive selection of beers all of different types and varieties. I am sure you will find one to your liking. One of the beers I chose was tapped out, but luckily they had it in bottle form. Probably would have been better on tap, but who's complaining. I would definitely come back here if I had the chance to visit Solvang again. read more

Also being the only Person of color was a bit weird, like ppl payed a little too much attention to me? but I didn't think much of it, I thought that I was just being hyper aware. But I'm not so sure now, after seeing other reviews. All of that aside, the beer on their menu wasn't great, it was stuff that was easy to find.
