Excellent Casual but Classy Eats at the Landsby Decked out and the signature grey tones and light wood, this main resto at The Landsby is a definite must try in the Solvang scene: Even if you're not staying here. The dying summer light with the intimate lighting adds an element of cozy that just draws you in. Settle down into a comfy couch or a kitschy spindle-backed wooden chair and get ready for friendly service and a nice meal that won't leave you hungry with good portion sizes. Came on a Wednesday night in July, and here's what we ate: 1. Manhattan Clam Chowder. Special soup of the day, this soup was more watery and less tomatoey than expected from a classic Manhattan. Thus, reads more cioppino. However, the utterly ample amount of chunky potato and clams was on point along with the flavor. Total recommend. 2. Mushroom Bucatini. Excellent dish. Comes with a truffle cream sauce with two types of mushrooms that combine to make a delicious savory dish. Noodles were al dente. While fhe choice of ricotta was okay, I think it might be more elevated with a generous portion of mizithra cheese ala the Old Spaghetti Factory. Still recommend. 3. Calamari. Star of the show with crunchy tentacles available. Super crispy batter. And it comes with fried lemons, jalapeños, and onions. What a mix! While it comes with an aioli, which is good for the onions and lemons, for sure, the move is to order marinara dipping sauce. Definite recommend. 4. Bread. So it's a baguette with chimichurri. Weird because they spread it on the bread already on THE OUTSIDE, not inside like you would think. You might be tempted to think: why not just put into a cup so that you can spread it yourself? And don't we normally put it on a meat like steak? But be not be alarmed. While these are questionable plating choices, you may ask for just the bread itself, which is great and worth getting. It's got a crisp outer shell and softer inside, which is a perfect pair for your chowder or even some marinara. Actual recommend. Also comes with soft butter spread, pickled onions. So should you come? Yes. Even if you don't stay at The Landsby, which is a nice hotel, by the way. But don't take my word for it. What a great find! We were walking down the street looking for a restaurant and a woman approached us and asked us if we needed a restaurant recommendation. She recommended Mad and Vin!! And a couple others. We enjoyed a beet salad, mushroom pasta, a Pinot Noir, and a butterscotch crème brûlée!!! All a 10 out of 10! Our server was George and our busser was Rudy! A perfect team, never had to ask for anything they were very attentive, perfection! This is one of those restaurants that if we lived here, we would come regularly. read more

This was a very dog friendly place for dinner, they brought Bella a water dish and chopped chicken. The service was top notch and the human food was really good, farm to table quality. Went for the restaurant week option which is 3 course menu: salad Santa ynez burger, and dessert ($30). Super awesome deal since the burger itself is $26. After we got our salad, there's a bit of wait for food. I didn't mind since I was nibbling on the pita bread with sun-dried tomato chipotle sauce. Hamburger was large, the sesame bun was delicious. I think the meat blend could be a bit better, I got medium and is somewhat dry. Got large fatty chunks, so if the fatty chunks can be blended more together. The fries in duck fat were awesome. This is a lovely restaurant and bar located inside The Landsby hotel. We met our friends by the bar and ordered some cocktails to start the night. I had the Pear Pressure which was amazing since I love rum pear is underrated. The Blood Orange Sour was also very good (whiskey) and Heatwave (tequila, mango) nice too. I also tried the Sage and Sol, and overall they're all delicious. Kudos to the bartender for these incredible concoctions. For sharing we went all out and got Duck Fat Fries, Santa Barbara Ceviche, Calamari Fritto Misto (5/5!) and Brussels sprouts to start. For the entree we ordered the Ora King Salmon and Pinot Noir Braised Short Rib because wine country. The food overall was very good but the salmon was out of this world. The pearl pasta well seasoned, the fish moist and perfectly cooked, and a lemon butter sauce it's something I still think about today. I also recommend the short rib if you want a heartier meal as it was so tender you could cut it with a fork. That and the mash potatoes will put you to sleep. Someone recommended this place but had sights on going to Peasants Feast. Well Peasants Feast closes at 6 pm.... ON A FRIDAY night!!! Solvang was crawling with people. Why close at 6. Oh well. Their loss our gain because Mad & Vin was outstanding all around. Beautiful interior and great servers. The bar area feels and looks upscale but has a locals vibe pouring good drinks. The restaurant as well looks like someplace you dress up to go to but isn't that at all. Staff was super friendly and attentive. The food off the chain. The special lamb shank left us speechless. We had such a good dinner here. We were in town for the weekend, and our airbnb host recommended this place for dinner. Luckily, we were able to snag a reservation the day of, and they seated us at a nice spacious table in the middle of the dining room after a short wait while they set the table up. The restaurant is inside the hotel, so we just hung out in the lobby to wait. As for food...we got: - Farmer's Salad - really fresh and very good. - Short ribs on mashed potato - solid. but honestly sort of paled in comparison to.... - the stuffed poblano. Oh my god this was amazing. It's vegetarian and was stuffed with wild rice and mushrooms and topped with some sort of amazing sauce, fried chickpeas, peanuts, and probably other deliciousness that I can't remember, but my heart will never forget this dish! It has the slightest kick to it, and is just so so so good. Highly highly recommend. I also got a non-alky beer (Stella), and we got some teas. Our server was George and he's great! I really really enjoyed this place. We made a reservation for an outside table since we were dining with our pup Fergus. The setting was lovely and the weather was perfect. Service was prompt and efficient. We decided to share the ceaser salad and the steak frites. It turned out to be plenty of food. The salad was plenty for two and it was well dressed and yummy. The steak came with seasoned butter, amazingly crispy duck fat truffle fries and plenty of tasty grilled veggies (mostly peppers). Everything was so good and prices were not bad. Mad & Vin was a much-needed escape during the chaos of Fourth of July weekend in Solvang. The town was packed, but the moment we stepped through The Landsby's serene, Scandinavian-style lobby, the energy shifted. It was calm, curated, and beautifully designed. My sister, who gets overwhelmed in large crowds, immediately felt more at ease. For my mom, who is disabled and had unfortunately lost her cane earlier in the trip, it was the perfect, low-stress place to pause and enjoy a proper meal. We sat on the patio, and it turned out to be the best decision. Outdoor seating is pet friendly. It was lightly breezy and quiet, overlooking a peaceful courtyard. When the sunlight hit the trees, it looked like something out of a fairy garden. The entire setting felt like a deep breath--elegant, comforting, and totally unpretentious. They also brought a bowl of water for my sister's dog, which we appreciated. It made the space feel even more pet-inclusive without any fuss. My rabbits were in a ventilated pet-backpack on a chair, and I ordered the seasonal fruit so we could share it with them so they didn't feel left out. Everyone here was so nice. I can't even describe how patient our waiter was with us. Our server was exceptional: patient, attentive, and genuinely kind. He answered every question thoughtfully, especially for my mom, who tends to get overwhelmed by menus with unfamiliar names. We ordered several dishes to share family-style, which made the experience even more relaxed and communal: * California Benedict (no bacon) with duck fat fries. These were easily the best poached eggs I've ever had. When I got home, I wanted to replicate them for meal prep, only to realize how difficult it is to achieve that level of perfection. * Ranchero skillet (no chorizo) * Smoked salmon plate * Buttermilk pancakes -- soft, golden, and beautifully made * Seasonal fruit bowl, These were the best eggs I've ever had. When I came home that night I said I want poached eggs for my meal prep. It's actually harder than it looks to make eggs like this. The only small issue was the Coke my sister ordered, which turned out flat due to a carbonation problem. She mentioned it calmly, they acknowledged it right away, offered a replacement, and when she declined, they removed it from the bill--no drama, no awkwardness. Mad & Vin was more than just a brunch stop. It gave our entire family a rare moment of calm, kindness, and care in the middle of a very busy trip. One of our go to restaurants in Solvang. It's part of the Landsby hotel. Location wise is perfect as it's right in the heart of town. There's a community lot right next door so plenty of parking. Street parking available as well. They open for dinner for a few hours. It's perfect if you're staying in the hotel as you literally walk down the stairs or if you're staying in one of the courtyard room. It's right out your door. You can start off at the bar for a cocktails before your meal. Check in at the host table. Restaurant isn't that big but it's very cozy. A real nice Scandinavian vibe same as the hotel. One end you have the focal point of the fireplace and the other is where the kitchen is. There's also a little private area where I've seen a wedding party happening before. Patio seating also available that is next to the bar area. Service was great. All staff are amazing and very attentive and friendly. Menu, their wine list was excellent. It's a full bar so whatever you would like, they can make. And for dinner, they had a lots of familiar dishes to start. Entrees, there was some familiar items and some that had been taken out which I did like. I think it changes seasonally. We started off with a bottle of wine to prep it for dinner. Seasoned pita bread and a dip was brought out to snack on. Quite tasty together with the dip. We didn't have a starter as really just wanted the main. Entrees, the ceviche which is a starter but can also be a meal if you're not overly hungry. Shrimp, avocado, cilantro, hot sauce and house tortillas chips. The Santa Ynez burger, quite tasty and pretty big. House blend growing beer, applewood smoked bacon, baby arugula, tomatillo jam, garlic aioli, local sesame bun, house pickle and served with duck fat fries. The wild mushroom pasta which is always a favorite. Bucatini pasta, maitaki, king oyster and shimeji mushrooms, truffle cream sauce, sage and ricotta salata. That's been on the menu for a while which could be a regular. It's very tasty so I see why. And the Pinot noir braised short ribs with creamy mashed potatoes, watercress and red wine reduction. Food was excellent. Everything was full of flavors and quite filling. We were pretty full so there wasn't any room for dessert that night. But we did get the flourless chocolate molten cake the following night in the bar. It's one of my favorite restaurants in Solvang. Highly recommend. read more

Feel like this is becoming our favorite place for happy hour in Solvang. We came in on a Monday night and found a little table in the bar area. We were quickly greeted by one of the bartenders and ordered two margaritas, the charcuterie plate and again the ceviche. The ceviche was just as wonderful and filling as we remembered, but WOW the charcuterie plate knocks all others out of the water. Really felt ripped off here. Ordered cheapest item on the menu which was 28$ each for two hamburgers. For cheese we had to pay 2$ extra each and the side salad was 18$. We drank tap water, but the bill with tip was 100$. Way too much $ for two burgers and a side salad in my opinion. Service was fine, food was fine, but both our stomachs didn't feel well for the rest of the evening after eating there. I was not full after the meal. We've eaten here and stayed at the Landsby before and it's just always a great experience. This time, we opted for the bruschetta and the buckwheat noodle salad to start. Even though the bruschetta said it has figs, we barely had any, which was a tad disappointing. Everything in the noddle dish screamed freshness and it's a great way to add some heft to what would otherwise be a lighter dish. For mains, we had the free-range chicken and the wild mushrooms. That chicken was perfectly done and the chipotle mashed potatoes were a pleasant surprise. We've gotten the wild mushrooms before and be forewarned, it's more food than you think. We've had trouble finishing it both times. read more

We had the Butternut Squash Soup Special (I don't know why the chef thought it needs croutons.) and the Farmer's Market Salad, which was a simple salad of Spinach, Tomato, Red Onion, Orange Segments and Pistachios with a Lemon Vinaigrette. Nothing to write home about. We did get complimentary pita chips with a red pepper dip, and that was quite delish. For entrées we had the Pinot Noir Braised Short Rib with mashed potato and the Ora King Salmon with pearl pasta, julienned spinach and sautéed mushrooms with a lemon Beurre Blanc sauce. They were both very delicious, but not very imaginative, intriguing or fantastic. We opted for the Pumpkin Bread Pudding. It tasted better than it looked. :-) Service was good, but there was no extra care or attention given. (We had to ask for a Diet Coke refill twice, for example.) Went to solvang the weekend before Christmas and it was jam packed with so many people! Mad & Vin was a good escape from the crowds as tables were nicely spread out and the ambiance was clean, quiet, and classy. This is the place to try out if you are looking for a nicer dinner at Solvang vs the more Danish-specific or casual spots. I recommend reservations for peak seasons as they weren't taking any walk-ins from what I overheard. We ordered the Brussels sprouts and the farmer's salad as our appetizers. The Brussels sprouts were some of the best Brussels sprouts I've had! 10/10 in my book! The sauce that the Brussels sprouts came with paired perfectly and was very addicting. The portion size was huge! I joked with my husband I could have just ordered that as my meal and I would have been satisfied. The farmer's salad was the opposite- it was very mediocre and would not recommend. The description sounded great with all these ingredients but in the end it felt very one note. It at least added a light freshness to the meal. My husband ordered the filet mignon while I ordered the mushroom bucatini. The filet was cooked perfectly and both my husband and toddler really enjoyed the filet. I had a bite and I felt the flavor was alright, I preferred filets I've had at other steakhouses. My mushroom bucatini was very good with pasta cookness and overall flavor but this was so heavy on the mushroom flavor. You need to make sure you really like mushrooms before ordering this dish and that's coming from someone that usually loves mushrooms. The first several bites were great but it was hard to eat a lot of and I was struggling to finish it. They also provided pita bread and red pepper dip. For a restaurant with this price tag and ambiance, I honestly would have expected a better bread/carb offering. The pitas were on the relatively hard side so we barely ate it but overall the dip was okay. I would recommend for those wanting to have a nice, more formal dinner in Solvang. Aside from the Brussels sprouts, nothing really impressed me but was still an overall good meal to sit down and enjoy with my family. read more

Had a very nice dinner with friends at Mad + Vin on a Saturday. The decor is modern and warm, the service very friendly and attentive. Loved the luna Roja cocktail, perfectly flavorful and spicy. Excellent calamari appetizer, the breading was light and I enjoyed the jalapeño pieces. Ate the pesto crusted halibut (one of today's specials) and while it was tasty, I wish the fish was a little flakier. We also ordered a glass of wine that had so much sediment on the bottom of the glass, it must've been the last pour of that bottle. Overall a pleasant experience, I would gladly return. read more

The good stuff: the hostess was lovely and took us to our table early, knowing it was our anniversary, after I told her. What do you need to know? This is a really loud place. it does attract partiers and loud people, so if you're looking to celebrate a more intimate event...don't go unless you are one that enjoys loud partying. Kids were running through the main dining room. The service felt very rushed at some points, then lagged at others. The food was decent but not exceptional. The filets were on the tough side, but the vegetables and market salad were great. The caesar salad had a taste of bottled dressing with barely any croutons and no noticeable parmesan. Mad & Vin is located inside of a hotel called Landsby. We didn't stay in the hotel but we definitely want to! The place is absolutely stunning with that modern and minimalistic vibe. When you walk in you have to head straight to the hostess podium. That day it seems like they were understaffed; the party that was in front of us both waited quite a bit to get seated. Once we got sat the server was nice but once she took our orders she disappeared, and when she came back to drop off the food she disappeared again lol...we had to wave people down a few times. There was another server that was waiting the table next to us and she was strictly focused on her tables. Which is fine I get that. But they are not as attentive, the busser was amazing! He was super friendly, he helped us a lot and always greeted us with a smile! FOOD Baja Fish Tacos - 6/10 My BD didn't care for it as much, there just wasn't enough sauce and they don't give additional sauces on the sides just lemon wedges. In my opinion, the fish was cooked very well great light crisp and the sauce in the tacos were really good just not enough making the tacos a little dry. Roasted Veg Fritata - 6/10 It wasn't bad the cheesy potatoes made it pretty good but outside of the cheese I needed some sauce lmao..I'm sorry I'm a condiments girl!! Buttermilk Pancakes - 7/10 The bacon that comes with these pancakes were pretty good! And the pancakes were soft. Side of Waffles - ?/10 When I got to try the waffles it was already soggy lol so I didn't rate but it comes with whipped cream and berries.
