Does The Essential Baking Company have any plans at all to return sunflower seeds to the crust of their Organic Multi-Grain bread as their list of ingredients have stated for three years now, or more without any sunflower seeds able to be toasted to the delicious addition on the crust. We're not talking sunflower meal, or the like, it is sunflower seeds that are listed and have been missing, again, for three years or more, strange that's about the time Russia invaded the sunflower producing nation of Ukraine, ok supply interruptions occur, but Oregon is a big producer of sunflower seeds also. I know EB went through some rough times where they also couldn't repeatedly slice the same widths in a loaf, but c'mon let's get those sunflower seeds back on top, and make a loaf the exceptional taste treat it has been, and can be again. read more

This place caught my eye one day and later stopped in for lunch. I had much higher hopes for this place than I actually discovered. The sandwich I ordered was not bad but other than a pickle there were no sides that you could even order. The bakery counter and seating left a lot to be desired as well as the menu. It is a bakery. It is a sandwich shop with limited quality options. The bread and sandwiches are really yummy good but not on a very affordable side on 1st Ave in Sodo industrial area. A whole sandwich exceed $11. They have outdoor seating but facing the busy 1st Ave with dust and traffic view. The indoor seating is very limited as well. The air circulation is not the best. Well, it is okay for Togo and a quick bite in here if I happen to be in the area (which is rare). Alki Bakery is across the street with a full restaurant set up. read more

This review is purely based off the fact that they have vegan and veggie options. Come in on a Tuesday at 12:30 and was told there was no vegan or veggie sandwiches. I was told they couldn't make one and with a snicker and smile informed me they could make me toast. I'm weakened from the lack of food in my body or I would of responded just as careless an thoughtless. The service has always sucked here but I've always overlooked it. Well not today SATAN!!! I see a lot of low star reviews based on options they may or may not have had. I don't have any food sensitivities, and am just interested in good food. I'll tell ya, they have amazing food. I've had their pizza and also had a turkey pesto sandwich. Both of which blew my expectations out of the water. I have been very impressed, and hope that the 3 star ratings on tis site don't scare people away. This is a weekly spot of mine now, and I HIGHLY RECOMMEND this place to anyone who likes the kind of stuff they have on the menu. Did the definition of 'kosher' (clean) suddenly change? The people behind the counter said when I was at the counter that Essential Baking Company on 1st S is kosher. I asked about the bacon-laden Cobb salad on the menu, and the meat-and-cheese sandwiches: "Are those kosher?" "Mumble-mumble-mumble" in response. This review targets the service experience and the goods bought at grocery stores that carry their products more than this particular site, but their WWW points at this address as the home office so here goes. My favorite EBC product used to be the artisan crackers baked with sea salt, cracked black pepper or rosemary. A few months ago, they disappeared from shelves throughout Seattle. We stopped at their bakery in Madison and the agent at the counter had no knowledge of the crackers or their whereabouts. So I wrote to their home office and didn't hear back for several weeks. After another attempt to make contact, they wrote back to confirm the discontinuation of that product which was crushing news to my mother and I who love those crackers and can't find anything to compare. Not even if you pay $6 for a bag of artisan crackers from Whidbey Island at Metro Market. I've tried their gluten free seeded rolls and their wheat bread. Both products have a mealy texture, and are heavy, dry and flavorless. Until the return of their glorious crackers, I'll be a Grand Central or Macrina customer from now on. :( read more

Georgetown isn't a place where I wander frequently, but every time I do it seems that there are neat little places popping up. The Georgetown outpost of the Essential Baking Company is another one of those. TEBC is set in a non-descript building that looks like it once housed an office. However, the insides have been remodeled and, although a small space, is inviting with bright light from the storefront windows. There's a small counter across from the doorway with a glass counter hosting a variety of baked goods, pizza, crepes, soups and sandwiches. Since I'd beaten my friend here, it left me a few extra minutes to consider the dining options. Although initially I was thinking of a sandwich, I quickly became mesmerized by their salads. This is a rare occasion for a hearty carnivore such as myself. So a caesar salad and vanilla latte were ordered. I like the small touches here. When I'd ordered the salad for in-store dining, they opened up the package (it is displayed in a plastic container similar to what you'd see in a QFC) and placed it on a separate plate with dressing and croutons. The vanilla latte was excellent. Most of the places in Seattle make at least respectable vanilla lattes, but it's still a little startling when you get a really good one. This was one of those. Aside from a few tables inside, there's also a small patio in the front where you can gaze at the traffic on 1st Avenue S. A few trees provide some shade, but it's open enough that you can get some sun here. The server was very friendly and asked if I was from the Georgetown neighborhood, mentioning that there was a discount for people working in the area. I considered my answer for a moment. As I am a terrible liar, I smiled and said "No, but I'll be back here often." read more

I stopped in once to pick up some bread on the way home. It was toward the end of the day so there wasn't a lot of offerings. The nicest looking loaf was a lone Rosemary Diamante so I grabbed that and some coconut macaroons. Back home, I sliced into the rosemary loaf and served it with dinner. I noticed my friends were scraping the salt crystals from the top. It was TOO damned salty : ( I gave them a third star for those macaroons. They were the dessert that night and everyone loved them. This review is for the Cafe- I was stoked to see they have a bakery near my work because the bread (Rosemary Diamante) is some of the best Ive ever had. EVER! Which is why they get only 2 stars right now for my first visit. I love that they are using organic, high quality, product. The coffee was good, the bread was half off, but my $9 sandwich was like eating at a gas station. The Italian is a tasty sandwich. There is one cheeseless panini and it's delicious; just be sure to order a side dish if you aren't a light eater. Bonus: get 50% off your bread purchase when you also buy lunch (to-go or dine-in!). Bonus: get $1 off when purchase both soup and sandwich. Pro: the location specific menu is posted on their website. Pro: you can call in your to-go order so it's ready when you arrive. There are a lot of good places in Georgetown. This isn't one of them. I think the other two locations of this chain were better. The two times I have gone, I have gotten a salad, which had wilted and some rotten greens which I ended up tossing (no pun intended?) and a sandwich with bread that was a bit dry. This is one of the best bakeries in the city and they serve sandwiches with dry bread? This was a shame, because I was excited when they first open. I love EBC goods and hadn't been in in a while, so stopped in the other day around 1:15-1:20PM. As I entered, the lady behind the counter yells to me as I'm still coming in the door " do you want roast beef or an egg sandwich?", not really I replied, "well that's all we've got left". Oh ok. So I decide to go with the whole roast beef b/c I wanted that bread! Took 10 minutes at least, because the lady behind me ordered a half roast beef, and the worker decides to make the half first, because "...that ones easier". I ask if they've got any cookies, bars, anything with chocolate- reply was no- just raspberry bars. Yeah forget that, I just want something chocolate- to which she replies oh, we have this one magic bar. I take it. I start eating it during the wait for my sandwich. Magic bar: junk. Tasted like oily ( NOT buttery) nuts and a hint of chocolate. Worst I've ever had. Paper bag stained in grease. Wtf. Then the sandwich is done: two slices of roast beef on top of MOUNDS of Gorgonzola and wilted arugula. The bread was delish, but had to scrape most of other off so I could taste it was not a Gorgonzola sandwich. $15 later, I throw half the magic bar and half the sandwich out. Horrid. Am I really the first person to review this??? I first read about the newest location in Georgetown a few weeks ago, and noticed the location when eating across the street. A few days later, I was there with a coworker and we got a stellar 5% discount for working in the area. Super friendly service (I thought better than what we always get in the Wallingford location) and obviously popular as the pastry case was looking sparse in the early afternoon. The lunch sandwiches are pretty tasty for something that is not made on the premises. They are, however, very small for the price, quality ingredients not withstanding. I value that some ingredients are locally produced (and think that the non-GMO movement is anti-science), but a small sandwich is a small sandwich. My biggest problem with them is availability; because they don't actually make the sandwiches or salads there, they tend to run out of things earlier in the day and have no ability to make more. Their breakfast sandwiches are a bit cheaper and are actually made there, but even then they frequently lack some of the ingredients and don't have any good substitutes on hand. Example: Last week they were out of all of the sandwiches I like (only had gorgonzola ones left), so I tried to order the arugula tomato and cheese egg sandwich, but they were out of arugula, and the best substitute they could offer was extra tomato. Eating here becomes very frustrating and hit or miss. I will say that the people at the counter are pretty nice (my first time in I was given a free cookie!) and that the pastries I have tried are also tasty. read more

I've been working at a nearby local business for the last 2 years and everyday I find my way to Essential Bakery. The food is delicious, the coffee is to die for, and the employees there have become more like friends and family than "the lady that makes my coffee" - Lisa is my absolute favorite barista! I used to go here a lot because my office is nearby and they offer healthy choices. The food is mediocre and service here has always been bad but I could ignore it until recently. A few months ago there was a girl who was great but she didn't stay long. There's one worker in particular who is especially rude during peak times and within the hour before closing. So, I ordered a Raspberry White Chocolate Yule Log cake on Tuesday, 1/5/2016, to be picked up on 1/7/2016; they require 48 hours notice for cakes! 1. I know it's a seasonal product, so my first question was, is it still in season, the lady I spoke on the phone with said Yes. I placed my order, the lady informs me they would call the next day with the price. 2. I get a call the next day, yesterday, at 9:45am with the price, And, that they can have it ready for me today; 24hours after I placed my order. My thoughts, PERFECT! I pick up my cake at 3pm. I get home and try it; it's really cold, icy cold. What with their 48 hours policy, I expected a freshly made cake. I look at the box, the cake was made December, 22, 2015. So, of course I called the café right away, and the lady states that it's no longer in season as of 1/5/2016. She adds that their cakes are premade and frozen. I let her know that not only was I under the impression but expect fresh cake with their FIRM 48hour ordering policy. With that said, I inform her I would come back the next day to return the cake for refund. She continues to tell me that the manager has left for the day already but that she would inform her. The next day, today, I go in with the box cake at hand. There is only one employee in the front café; whom I will refer to as Employee #1. So, I stand to the side and wait. Few minutes later, another employee joins and start to help with the orders; whom I will refer to as Employee #2. Finally, employee #1 asks how she can help me, and I ask to speak with the manager. She asks what this is concerning to, and I respond with that I am to return a cake and that I had already spoke with another employee about it the day before. Employee #1 looks over to #2, and says, that's the Yule Log guy. Now, #2 looks annoyed; I later find out, #2 is the café/front manager. #2/café manager, starts talking about me with another employee while I am in an ear shot; I ignore it. #2/café manager, again, starts to talk about me with another employee, while adding, and I quote, "he thinks we make cakes here in one day". Now I interrupt, don't say it like that......if you going to talk about anyone or what's going on, at least state the Facts...PLEASE! That employee she was talking to turns to me and introduces herself as the back manager; this is when I find out employee #2 is the café/front manager. So we have short discussion about the cake and my understanding/expectation. She continues to ask if what I would like is a refund, and my answer is YES. She says ok, but that she needs to talk with their accountant. Now, Back manager continues to talk with Café manager while she waits for what I assume is her order...... Then, the Cafe/Front manager says here is your $40 and just puts it on the counter to her right of the espresso machine..... RUDE RUDE RUDE RUDE RUDE I have NEVER experienced this BAD of a service/treatment in my entire life. It was so bad, that here I am creating Yelp account just so I can write a review!!!!
