The service was not great; often went long periods without checking on us, let our drinks sit at the bar for 20+ minutes, and seemed very cranky. The food was mostly great; the hot honey chicken and the biscuits were to die for. The sweet potatoes weren't mashed enough and were drenched in cinnamon to the point where it almost made me cough. Stopped here with my family on Saturday around 1pm. Staff was very friendly and had great suggestions. We got the whole chicken, mac and cheese, spoon bread and sweet potatoes. I've been wanting to try The Eagle for a while and was happy to finally get to visit. What a place it is! My friend and I arrived late on a Saturday night (really, not too long before closing) so it wasn't busy at all. The bar area was quiet and pleasant. Rio, our bartender, greeted us with a smile and was very friendly. I'm pretty sure he used to sing in Disturbed or something. Anyway, the first thing I tried was the mint & rye cocktail. Bangin. Strong and flavorful. But the food was really the star all night. Let me tell you about the hush puppies. They came out hot and fresh. I broke one open and watched the steam rise like a majestic bird before I dove it into the comeback sauce (see what I did there?). Woo boy. It's hard to explain how good it is. You'll just have to try. The other tastings of the evening were the fried chicken BLT, shrimp and grits, and mac and cheese. Each was delicious in its own way. A spicy bit here, a sweetness there. We attended the Days of Giving event at The Eagle Detroit. We had to register for the event and wait for an Open Table reservation to confirm we were accepted. When we didn't get a response after a week, I emailed inquiring when we would know if we were confirmed. I received no response after another week and then we received confirmation the day before. We arrived a few minutes early but were seated immediately. The restaurant is clean with a low key, casual vibe. The service was slow but our server was very personable. We ordered the quarter chicken dark, pork sandwich, biscuits, Mac n cheese, succotash, and sweet potato crock. When our food arrived, they gave it to the table next to us. Since they hadn't touched it, they moved the plates to our table. The chicken seemed a tad bit uncooked on the inside and was somewhat spicy. It came with hot honey that was also spicy. The Mac n cheese was good but it arrived a little on the cold side. The sweet potato crock was excellent - comes with marshmallows on top which adds a nice sweet taste to the sweet potatoes. The biscuits were undercooked as well but they were hot on arrival. The food was just ok in my opinion. I wouldn't search the restaurant out to return due to the limited menu choices. The design of this restaurant is amazing it gives you a warm and inviting feel. The overall atmosphere feels great for a family meal out, fun with friends or even date night. The food was ok! I went for the fried chicken because the pictures I've seen were amazing. I was disappointed I was expecting crunchy and mouthwatering fried chicken. The chicken was good the best thing I had rivaling only the fries. The chicken reminds me of kfc original chicken but way more juicy. The Mac and cheese was bah, it was bland and needs some soul poured into it. The greens were not cooked long enough and whoever made them didn't make pot liquor first. The server recommended the spoon bread over the biscuits and I should have listened these biscuits were sooo dry. The best way to describe the service we received would be "unwanted step children". The server was overwhelmed with a party and basically ignored us we had to ask for everything and it took forever to come. We asked for hot sauce and got it when we were ready to go. New kid on the block and he's a big boy! I originally went to the grand opening about a week ago and it was a solid experience. If you've ever been to a gastropub where it looks like they sell more drinks, all you gotta do is add fried chicken (sandwiches) and rural vibe and you are inside the restaurant mentally. The owners were available that day, obviously, and both them and the servers checked in and followed up often enough. Now for the food. Any fried chicken there is going to be " fried hard" and it's moderately seasoned with a noticeable kick of spice. If you want to add fun to the chicken, pour some of their hot honey on for sweet heat just hot enough to explore their variety of beers, cocktails, and flavored lemonades. I was mildly disappointed in the sweet potato casserole. Some cinnamon sugar can easily fix the dish. Overall, I enjoy the category and this restriction adds to the midtown area which is already full of diversity from international, upscale, and even the 24 hour guilty pleasure one block over. Went for the chicken and ended up ordering the spoon bread (served in a cast iron skillet), collard greens and horseradish mashed potatoes with gravy. The chicken was seasoned well, clearly brined with a skin that lacked some crisp. The spoon bread was a highlight with roasted corn kernels as the base. So glad to see The Eagle in Detroit. Once word gets out, I expect this place will be packed. You come here for the fried chicken but they have other options as well. Everything we had was excellent. We ordered hush puppies, mac & cheese, one quarter chicken and the chicken BLT. The food is amazing and we would order everything again. Fantastic southern style food. This was my favorite restaurant when I lived in Columbus, and I'm so happy to see it in Detroit. Great prices, so you can try a lot of menu items and not break the bank, and still take some home for later. The service here is unmatched. I love The Eagle, and frequent the Bardstown location in Louisville. This was my first visit to the Detroit location. I loved it! I was visiting Detroit for the first time in 20 years, and was astounded by the revitalization. Great to see an amazing restaurant like The Eagle added to the city's comeback. Our meal was superb (the Fried Chicken BLT was to die for), and the ambience was great (there was a birthday party going on that had the whole place jumping). Our server Maria was excellent (the best I've had at any of the three Eagles I've been to), and the manager came over and chatted too. All in all, an excellent time in an excellent restaurant.
