[Out-of-Towner Review] Don't get BBQ in Detroit. While I'm not out here trying to badmouth a local business, I want to be honest. I had to laugh at myself, because, YES, the door is hard to find and I had to use the photo to find it ‍ Every employee in there matched the rainy vibe outside. They were disinterested in serving or possibly, even being there. I sat at the bar, as a solo diner. The bartender was nice, not rude at all. But just lacked any attentiveness besides, bringing the food, drink, and the check. I have no clue if it is because they have a bunch of fans going but everything was dry. Well, except for the chicken thighs. Of all things, those were somewhat juicy. But the brisket and ribs were DRY! I couldn't even really get into my meal, and I love me some BBQ... The fries and ranch were delicious and the mac-n-cheese was cool. But overall, the only thing that kept me engaged was their sauce lineup. I had fun trying them all on each type of protein. I found free street parking along the side and visited when they first opened on a Thursday. I sat at the bar since I was in a hurry and alone. Even the bar seats have the 6 sauces at every two seats. They have the seasonal one now, which makes up the 6th sauce. It is a KC smoky sauce. The remaining sauces are still apple, sweet, spicy, NC, and SC mustard. Pro tip: lift the straw on any drinks with a salt rim For a drink to start things, I tried the tallow-rita which I found to be pretty interesting, at least on paper. It consists of smoked tallow washed tequila, gran gala, lime, honey, pineapple, a smoked sea salt rim, and brisket and dehydrated lime garnish. This sounded like a lot of effort to make. I later added an iced tea for the road. For my food I chose the 1/4lb brisket (fatty) and a side of the premium mac n cheese. I later added their famous carrot cake. Margarita - kind of disappointing since the menu states they have a brisket garnish, but the bartender says they're not doing that anymore. Geez, that was part of the reason I even ordered the drink in the first place. This drink was alright but was small and didn't wow me like I had hoped. Thus, the reason I ended up having to order the iced tea afterwards. Brisket - very thick single slice, fatty for sure. Exactly what I wanted. I tried the brisket with all 6 sauces and even went through the sauces twice just to make sure. Mac n cheese - a premium side that is $1 more. This is like a mini mac n cheese casserole. It uses shells as the pasta and sharp cheddar. Yummy! I loved the spices on this dish. Carrot cake - this was definitely moist and served with plenty of pecans I enjoyed it quite a bit. Wish they had banana pudding though! I'm also disappointed that they do have sausage but it's not available a la carte. It's only on the $59 sampler platter appetizer. Please consider making it a la carte as well!! I was thinking I'd like the spicy sauce the best, but it's not spicy and seemed more like a tomato paste to me...very strange! Been here quite a few times and this is one of the few BBQ places left that actually gives good portions with high quality meat. This past time I got the brisket (already tossed in one of their mild sauces), fries, cornbread, and mac and cheese. This was my first time eating inside of slows. Our server was incredibly kind and patient. She didn't rush us at all and had great suggestions. I got the deuces, which is two meats, two sides, and bread and pickles for $19. The pulled pork was great, the mashed sweet potato's and baked beans were phenomenal. I came in without a reservation on a Friday, luckily I was able to find two bar seats. I ordered wings 10/10 they come with no sauce. Baked beans 10/10, Cole slaw 10/10, and potato salad 5/10 and it had jalapeños in it. They have a mix of rock music playing which is cool. Our bartender helped us super quick and I ordered an old fashioned 10/10. I've came here before for barbecue as well and it's amazing. I plan to return as always. Walking into Slows felt so cool, it's a dark ambiance with a lot of wood - almost cabin like for the full BBQ experience. The staff was friendly and came to check on us. I have to say I wasn't thoroughly wowed by my lunch at Slow's. My husband and I came in for lunch and we split a Yardbird and a brisket sandwich. My favorites were the seasonal (nice blend of sweet and kick) and the SC Mustard (the best mustard-based sauce I've had, and I've eaten barbecue in South Carolina). I'm really disappointed with this experience. I ordered at the bar and when I got home, I realized my vegetarian sandwiches were made with pork. I called right away, and instead of offering a refund or a simple fix, they required me to drive back and return the incorrect sandwiches before they would remake them. That meant finding parking again and waiting while the new order was prepared. By the time I finally got home, all of the food was cold and hard. Believe it or not....this was my first time at Slows. It's been a Corktown staple for so long, I'm kinda embarrassed to say this. A friend of mine came in from out of town and he wanted to try some BBQ so we decided to do a pitstop into slows. We both love pork rinds and were surprised they were highly recommended and made fresh when ordered. These things came out hot and snapping like a rice crispy treat! Service was absolutely horrible and they weren't very busy at all . Took 20 minutes after getting our drinks to place an order and that was only after we requested someone go find him . Solid BBQ although I have definitely had better before. I got The Favorite (one of the combo options) with baby back ribs, beef brisket, BBQ chicken, waffle fries, cole slaw, and cornbread for $30. From the menu, it seemed like a lot of stuff, but turns out it was actually just a bit of each thing. For example, there was literally just one piece of beef brisket (although it was pretty tender and good). The 3 baby back ribs were decent, but slightly on the tougher side and a bit hard to get off the bones. The BBQ chicken was okay - honestly more like normal seasoned chicken than BBQ-like. They gave a good selection of different BBQ sauces so you can try each and use whichever you would like. However, I personally felt like each one was a bit too watery and for someone like me who prefers a thicker sauce, there wasn't really one that I liked all that much (the apple one was best though). As for the rest of the items in the combo, the waffle fries were nicely crispy although not actually that much better than the ones you would get at a fast food place. The one piece of cornbread was average quality, as was the coleslaw. There were also a couple pickle slices on the side. I also tried the Triple Threat Pork sandwich ($13.50). As the name suggests, this has pulled pork, bacon, and ham inside. While it was okay, it definitely could've used some other ingredients inside to complement the meats and provide some different flavors / textures. The food alone would've probably earned this place only 3 stars but I will bump it up to 4 stars because of the nice outdoor patio seating area. It is outdoors yet has a wall around it so it feels private and the road nearby isn't too noisy. Definitely a nice spot to sit and eat if the weather is good. The interior is fairly nice as well with a good amount of seating. The service speed was at times good and at times not as good. The combo came out literally within minutes, while we waited quite a while for the sandwich to arrive. The staff are fairly friendly and helpful. Overall, I would say Slows Bar BQ is a good option if you are looking for a chill spot to hang out with friends and enjoy the outdoor patio area. If you are specifically just looking for good BBQ though, then this might not be as high up on the list, although it still certainly gets the job done. read more

Slow's has been a favorite of mine for years, turning out reliably good barbecue. We started with the barbecue wings, which are not the typical Buffalo wings you might expect. These are full wings, nicely barbecued. ($15.). This trip I had the quarter rack, where I chose brisket as my optional second meat (you can also choose pulled pork or chicken). You get two sides (I chose beans and coleslaw), and a choice of either bread or cornbread. ($24.). The ribs are meaty, not fatty, and the brisket is tender and flavorful. While I didn't have it this trip, I would also recommend the Yardbird sandwich. Voted one of the top 3 best sandwiches in America, it has smoked chicken, sauteed mushrooms, cheddar and applewood smoked bacon in whole grain honey mustard BBQ sauce. ($13.50).
