They Say after dark
Yolande M.

They Say Restaurant is a Pre-Concert and Post-Concert hot spot! On concert nights, they are normally bustling with diners. We were grateful to get to dine at the bar before the Robert Glasper concert. They are located only a couple blocks away from The Aretha Franklin Amphitheater. Once we parked at the amphitheater, it was a short walk over to the restaurant for dinner. The benefit of eating at the bar was that they were quick with serving the drinks and taking our food order. I ordered the wings and fries which were good. My girlfriend decided on the corned beef sandwich and fries. She said they were both great.

My wings were great. The togo station seems unorganized though. The bathrooms were dirty and that was a disappointment. Nice bartenders, they were attentive, amd on top of things.

Let's start with the smell when you first enter this place "not good". It stinks you have to wonder what that is, then the service it was okay but it was absolutely no one in here and my waitress had my food sitting waiting for her to bring to the table. But yes me and my son sat down and ordered. I ordered 10 piece they say wings with barbecue sauce and a raspberry tea and my son ordered a lemonade and cheeseburger. Food was the only thing okay in this place but because of the smell I will not be returning to this location. My son enjoyed his food as well.

My friends and I came here after a night of drinking downtown. Walking into this restaurant it had a smell really hard to explain but once you made it past the entrance, the smell was gone. We sat at the bar and was properly serviced by the bartender. The drinks are not that good so I will not come back for just drinks. I opted for the They say trio platter, which came with potato skins for they say wings and a quesadillas. Potato skins were OK and the quesadilla wasn't that flavorful but "they say" wings were saucy and very good. I understand why they are known for their barbecue sauce wings. I will come back for their wings alone, and I would like to try other items on the menu to see how they taste.

Excellent service from the parking lot to inside. Staff was very friendly and full of smiles, you can tell they liked being there and we were more than welcome to come in and enjoy ourselves. It was quiet and the ambiance made you feel right at home. Our waitress was super nice and made sure we were well taken care of. I ordered the fried wings that were cooked to perfection in looks and taste. The BBQ sauce looked really nice, a little bit too tangy for my tongue but good! We will most definitely return with a few more friends.

Okay because who doesn't like They Say wings?!!! We know these are wayyyy better than Sweetwater! The customer service is ify. Sometimes they're really good, other times u can do without the attitude. I'm not sure if they open upstairs or not, it's been an extremely long time since I've been up there. They should open this back up as a club honestly. Salad was delicious, Cajun pasta was good too! My sprite was disgusting and I returned it and got water. I believe it was the end of the night super syrup thing. It can be a bit busy so use ur patience!

Lamb chops, mac and greens

Service was very friendly and courteous and prices were reasonable. Unfortunately the food missed the mark. First it took FOREVER to order our food - several tables that came after us definitely ordered before us and were 1/2 done with their meal before we got our food. The food itself was kind of a mixed bag. Fried Turkey Chops 0/5 - so tough I couldn't eat then and even tough to cut with a steak knife. The flavor was very mid. They looked delicious though. Collard Greens 4/5 - very good but just a little heavy on the salt Mac n cheese 4/5 - also very good but oddly just a wee bit light on the salt Lamb Chops 4/5 -medium well with a light pink center, very juicy and tender- good flavor

The theme was "Yes, Chef: An exploration of culinary icons through a cocktail lens." Each drink was inspired by or dedicated to a famous culinary icon, and you can read about each one in the index. We each ordered one drink from each section. From the Opening, I chose the Diaspora Club, which was so refreshing and delicious. Then from the Principals, I chose the Chingona, which was a little bit spicy and savory but still so refreshing. To Finish, I chose the Chocolatier Cosmo, which came with a tiny house-made salted dark chocolate. I loved all three cocktails I ordered, especially the chocolatier cosmo because it was perfectly sweet and went so well with the small piece of chocolate. For food, we started off with the crispy pork belly milk bread. For my entree, I ordered the miso butter gnocchi. It was kind of on the salty side but I still really liked it. The apple sofrito added a bit of sweetness to it. For dessert, we had to get the rhubarb coffee cake, which came with strawberry ice cream. Omg one of the best desserts I've ever had!! I never thought of combining cinnamon coffee cake with rhubarb or strawberry but it's perfect, and I might have to make something like that soon. Service was great and we were seated right away at 8pm on a Saturday despite not having a reservation. Food and drinks came out promptly and timed perfectly. We spent about 1.5 hours here and we never felt rushed.

However the real gripe about service was regarding that we brought our kid and the only item on the menu was buttered noodles. That is okay, but after a few bites, even my kid who doesn't know many words informed us it was too oily and stopped eating. We wanted to buy something nearby and bring it back so he could have food, as he wouldn't eat the other items that we ordered. However, after multiple attempts, we were denied outside food or drink, solely for the kid. The restaurant's inflexibility because of their own dish being too oily and buttery, resulting in our kid being mostly hungry for the duration of our dinner . In terms of the dishes we ordered, the taste was unique for some dishes and average for others. We ordered cabbage, beef tartare, seafood pasta, and halibut. Of those dishes, surprisingly, the cabbage was the most flavorful and unique, and we rated it an easy 5 out of 5, as we never knew cabbage could taste so unique and tender. The beef tartare was good, but nothing special, as I think other restaurants serving beef tartare would taste about the same. The seafood pasta was interesting, as it had a slight crisp to it, but other than that, there were just a few pieces of octopus, which made it unique but not overly so. The halibut was tender, I'll give it that, and they prepared it in a unique bean sauce, which was also good and light. But again, nothing that beats halibut that I've had at other restaurants. The ambiance was dimly lit, packed. Plenty of servers and managers walking around. People were obviously well dressed. We sat in a corner, a dark and very cold area, so much so that we needed to put on something heavier. It is not a small dining area. The kitchen you can see on the way to the restroom was bright, well-lit, and open, with plenty of workers and chefs. The plating was pretty good, the service was quick. The food came out pretty quickly as well. However, it is a 1 to 2-hour dining experience. I don't think I would come back, as I don't think the flavor profile, service, and ambiance matched my expectation of this commonly noted number one restaurant in Detroit.

Even on a Monday night at 8:00pm, they were busy, which I think says a lot. The menu is small but intentional. Their staples are staples for a reason, and the servers are so personable that talking with them almost feels like running into an old friend. We each ordered a drink, the Brussels (always, we don't care what we get for a main), and shared the burger and campanelle. You're probably never going to be blown away by a burger, but you know a good burger from a bad one. This was a GOOD burger. The campanelle though... we could not stop talking about it. Genuinely addicting and easily the standout of the night. So happy this place exists in Detroit. We'll keep coming back.

We arrived on this misty evening around 8pm, into the dim, candlelit space with upbeat music playing. We were asked promptly if we had a reservation-- did not, so we were promptly seated at the counter, across from the bar-- which was actually less crowded than the section on the floor with tables. Onto the food, I had fries that were nicely salted, and covered in a curry spice. They were decent but nothing spectacular. I would also describe my burger this way. The best part of it was the perfectly toasted and buttery bun-- but I find it overconfident to serve a burger without any toppings-- just a sauce that was apparently blended with pickles that I couldn't really taste. The burger was seasoned well enough...plenty of pepper, but it was all one texture, I didn't pick up any searing or anything to make the texture less one note. I asked my server for extra sauce, mustard, and ketchup to make it better. My friend recommended this spot specifically for the burger so I'm willing to say, I just ordered the wrong thing maybe. Onto the desert, the corn tiramisu caught my eye as something unique to try and it was truly an experience. It made me laugh out loud cause it was strange unexpected food experience in both flavor and presentation, I enjoyed it, but wouldn't order it again persay. It came out in a little whipped pile covered in cornflakes with green jalapeño jelly. I appreciated the richness and that it wasn't too sweet-- but overall I'd enjoy it more if it was presented more neatly, and there was a bit more spice on the plate to cut through said richness, although to their the deep sweet and earthy flavored of jalapeños was captured perfectly in the gel.

Our server asked what we wanted to drink & we wanted iced tea, but they didn't have any. No iced tea? We were shocked. So, we just had water. The server brought 3 empty glasses and a carafe of water, and it was a little bit of a struggle to reach it. Two of us ordered the parmesan chicken and the other person ordered the whitefish. While the coating on the fish and chicken were good, neither the chicken nor the fish itself were seasoned, so the overall taste was kind of bland. The green beans were cooked nicely -- still had the nice snap, but not much flavor. On the other hand, the flavor of the mashed potatoes was very good, but they weren't particularly warm. When I made the reservation online, it asked if there was anything special that they should know. I mentioned that it was the birthday celebration for someone in our party. They didn't recognize it any way. Would I come back here? Maybe. But I would probably order a burger or pizza instead.

After being closed a year the new owners opened it back up as a craft slider "bar". There is nothing fancy about this restaurant. Its decor is basic wood tables and chairs in the center with booths lining one side of the space and a bar on the other. The staff are casual about you being there - there is no fanfare. When we arrived, we checked in at the host stand to get our names on the wait list. They text you when your table is ready. The place was full when we got there but the turnover was quick. We didn't wait more than 10 minutes and were seated in a booth. The menu is all sliders on one side and fries, salads, and sweets on the other. Fairly simple and the prices are beyond reasonable. The server told us most people get 3 sliders and fries. I did that plus I got a Moscow Mule to drink - it was only $5! I chose the Double Cheeseburger, Spicy Crispy Chicken (with a slice of provolone added), Olive Burger, and the Truffle Fries. Everything is served as soon as it's made so your items arrive at different times, which was fine by me. Each slider was served in its own cardboard "dish". Again, nothing fancy. The Olive Burger was really good - served with green olives and cheese on top of a beef burger. I liked the saltiness of the olives - it added to the total taste in a positive way. The Double Cheeseburger was actually pretty big so I would just get the single next time. And the Spicy Crispy Chicken was recommended by our server. He suggested adding the provolone slice, which I did. That was basically a buffalo chicken sandwich. And it was good! The truffle fries were excellent - you could really taste the truffle seasoning/oil. I also liked that they were the skinny type of fries. This is the type of independent restaurant I'm always looking for - one that sticks to its theme and does an excellent job of it. I'll definitely be back!
