The Eagle. To start this review of this pure, elegant and masterpiece-deserved establishment, we have to direct the downright awful hypocritical Karens and "Michaels". You foos. That's why you don't stay in them streets too long so you don't inhale what the streets are smoking because apparently they be messing you up in the head. Our waiter, the sweetheart she is, was one of the most kind and loving waiters I have ever experienced. She really added to the vibe of Southern antics and culture. AND THE FOOD. After not eating for 8 hours and stopping here was an experience. The chicken, the lemonade, the HOT HONEY, even the pickles were perfect. AND PLEASE BUY THE HUSH PUPPIES. Our whole party tried these first and it all brought us to tears. Please go even if you have plans to enter an establishment such as HopCat or McDonalds. You are disgusting. I was not impressed with the food, but it's suitable as a fancier dining option off Woodward Avenue. I ordered chicken, mashed potatoes, fries, hush puppies, biscuits, and grilled cheese. A lot of the food wasn't consumed and ended up being thrown out. When I tried the chicken, I was thinking there were a dozen other places with better and crispier chicken at half the price. My friend thought the chicken was too tough and the biscuits were too hard. The best dishes were the grilled chicken and the jam that comes with the biscuits. Nothing else stood out for me. All the food was really good: the spicy chicken dip had a good kick and the blue cheese added an interesting flavor, the pulled pork was tender and juicy, the Carolina gold sauce that came with it was tart, the BLT was delicious very crunchy and great ingredients, the honey cornbread stole the show- it had a layer of corn at the bottom and almost tasted like a pancake or griddle cake! The Eagle has super convenient online ordering. So we ordered a bunch of stuff for pick up and brought it home. The size of the menu isn't crazy large, but I don't think that's bad thing. They've got a focus on Southern comfort style food and they execute it well. We got a good variety of sides: - Shrimp & grits - Mac & cheese - Horseradish mashed potatoes - Collard greens I would say all of them were very good. Yes, even the collards. Some of the people with me were not into the collards but I think that was a them problem and not any fault of the actual collards. I stand by opinion that collards go perfectly with fried chicken and the ones here are no exception. As for the fried chicken itself, it's also super good. There's a good amount of spice in the batter however there wasn't much of a crisp, but this may be because we got it to go and it sad in a covered bucket for too long. As for the meat, I'm more of a fan of dark meat but the white meat was not bad. It was pretty juicy and it seemed like the chicken is brined. The Eagle was a splendid decision right before enjoying a DSO matinee, IYKYK! We were greeted warmly for our late afternoon reservation, which didn't appear to be necessary as only a few other patrons were dining at that time. There is a parking lot behind the restaurant with reasonable rates for the day. The esthetic is industrial with a little glam, it's quite comfortable and bright in there. The food! Overall the food was great! We elected for the half chicken with greens, spooncake and mashed potatoes for our main course. As an appetizer we selected the pickled green beans. Here's how the rate: Green beans: 5/10, I'm sure those who enjoy sweet or bread and butter pickles can appreciate these more than we did. We each ate one and left the rest on the table. Spooncake: 8/10, a must have, super delicious and the texture from top to bottom is great. Chicken and hot honey: 10/10, this is probably the best restaurant fried chicken we've had. From the seasoning, to the crispness, to the juices! Excellent! The hot honey is a nice accompaniment and even went well on other items to jazz them up a bit. Greens: 7/10, they were just ok. The texture was good but they didn't have much flavor outside of tasting vinegary. Mashed potatoes: 6/10, I wanted these so badly to taste like they looked! I typically stay away from chain restaurants, but I was very impressed with the eagle. The interior was pretty plain, but they do have a lot of available seating and a prime location on woodward. Our waitress was amazing and provided so many recommendations, you could tell she loved the food which got us excited for our meal. We shared a whole chicken and ordered nearly every side. The fried chicken was so juicy and well seasoned. For sides we got spoonbread, fries, sweet potatoes, mac n cheese, collard greens, and shrimp and grits. The spoonbread (corn bread) was so good and the crispy edges from the skillet were amazing. I was also surprised by how good the fries were, I really liked the seasoning they used. This place was interesting right off Woodward In Detroit. My son ,family and I stopped here for dinner . We ordered the chicken blt. My son ordered the grill cheese with a lemonade . I ordered the southern chopped salad with fried chicken breast chopped up on top and I must say it was delicious I also ordered the spicy chicken dip it was tasty to me but very spicy . Met up family here for dinner around Christmas time. When we went to the bar to wait for the rest of our group the bartender did not greet us for a while but eventually came over. Once we were sat, our server was nice and helpful. The chicken was juicy and pretty good, although I wish it was a little more crunchy. Not sure if it was just because we were ordering for 10 people. The chicken can be on the spicier side but I enjoy that and really like their hot honey on top. Also the first time I have tasted oregano in the breading which was different but not bad. The hush puppies were probably some of the best I have had. Usually they are dry and bland but I really like theirs. The mac and cheese was very creamy and cheesy. Although my uncles on the other side of the table was on the dryer side so it seemed to be hit or miss. The burnt ends were also a good way to start. We dropped by The Eagle for a Sunday lunch, looking for some good fried chicken. As we walked in, we found the place almost completely empty - I guess it's more of a dinner destination? Since it was so empty, everything was pretty prompt; we ordered and got our food quickly. House Brewed Sweet Tea ($3) - This is a good sweet tea, nice black tea flavor with a bit of roasted smokiness at the end. The sweetness is appropriate and balanced, not overly saccharine as I've found with some other places around Metro Detroit. I was anticipating a lot worse and was pleasantly surprised. Hush Puppies ($7) - The hushpuppies are served with comeback sauce, which in this case was basically just thousand island (not spicy at all) garnished with chives. They have a light crisp on the exterior and the interior is batter mixed with jalapenos, red bell pepper, herbs, and whole corn kernels, with all the flavors mixing together into a great bite. The interior is super moist, maybe excessively so for a hushpuppy. It honestly doesn't need the sauce on the side at all. Homemade Biscuits ($6) - The pictures make the biscuits seem very light colored and underbaked, but that's far from the truth. These came out looking just like the pictures, but were almost perfect with a good light crunch on the exterior and the interior flaky, buttery, and crumbly. A very good biscuit in general. I wonder why the appearance is so wan - perhaps if they added some butter or a bit of egg wash after baking, it could improve things? These are served with delicious honey butter and a blackberry jam. 1/2 Fried Chicken ($16) - Let's start with the good - the flavor is phenomenal. I think they use pickle brine for the chicken and that slight tangy acidity mixed with the slightly sweet and savory spiced breading, makes for a delectable bite. The interior of the chicken is very moist, in fact, I'd say some portions are too moist, resulting in an almost spongy or mushy texture in some areas. I feel like they brine the chicken for way too long, flooding the chicken with too much liquid. The wing tip of the chicken, normally tough and hard , fell apart with a small tug, a sign of overtenderization. In addition, whatever process they use to fry the chicken needs major work. There was not a single piece of skin/breading that was crisp - everything was soggy. They need to revisit their frying process, relook at their breading starch ratios, and take a look at their brining times. It's sad that their signature dish was also by far the worst. As a side note, the chicken came with a bottle of hot honey that we ended up not using. I have some pretty mixed feelings about The Eagle. Their sides seem to be good to great, but their signature dish, the fried chicken, needs some work. The chicken at max is a 3 star dish, but the sides raises my score up to 4. read more

However will deduct a star for being SO loud (I feel so old for even typing this out...ha!) but I could hardly hear the friends I was with and the super high seats are very awkward to get in and out of - esp as a short person, I am not a fan of such high seating. BIL wanted to come here after a Tigers game for some fried chicken. Was a group of 5 of us and we got seated quickly. Our server was over quickly and brought us waters while we were figuring out drinks, which was much appreciated after the walk there. We all ordered various things and everyone was generally happy. The 9 year old was raving about the fries, to the point of trying to convince her parents to get another order to take home. 3 of us split a pitcher of the bourbon punch and that was delicious. My one big complaint were the salads. I got the summer chopped and my BIL got another one. Both came pre-dressed and neither of us could finish the salads because the dressing was just overwhelming. I generally get salads because I really, truly enjoy them. But having every single bite coated in ranch, a weirdly sweet ranch, was just really off-putting. I ate some of it because I was just that hungry but it was really disappointing. My BIL had the same issue with his salad. Just downright drowning in dressing. Highly, highly suggest putting the dressing on the side in the future. read more

The Eagle is conveniently located on Woodward. The restaurant specializes in Southern Comfort Food. People rave about their fried chicken. All had a good taste but could have been hotter, they were served at just above warm like they had been sitting around for a bit. Service was slow but wasn't the fault of the waitress who was very attentive and apologetic for the wait time. The decor was nice and classic, wood chairs do not lend a comfy seat for a longer visit and seating seemed too close for comfort if they had been busier. I made a reservation out of fear that it would crowded for a Thursday evening around 5pm and I was very surprised that it wasn't crowded especially considering it was a Red Wings games today. Anywho, it was me and my dining partner...my husband lol! We were immediately seated and greeted by Holly our server who was very nice and helpful. She gave great drink suggestions and gave us a good overview of the menu. We decided to start with the Spicy Chicken Dip, which was good but it's more of a buffalo than just spicy. My husband got the fried chicken sandwich with fries, I got the 1/4 chicken all white meat(you get a breast and a wing), the collards and me being the shrimp lover that I am lol! I tend to order them at every restaurant I go to and get super excited when they actually have some and I can order as a side dish. So I was able to order some grilled and they were perfect 10 out of 10!! I had a glass of Rose and my husband had a beer to wash it all down. Overall, the food was really good, the chicken was cooked perfect, done and crispy but not too crispy. The collards had a good taste also but just needed to be cut better. The restaurant sits on a corner, there is parking on the side street and also a parking lot behind the building. The inside gives you that pub feel with tables and booths. We were fortunate enough to attend the Eagle Days of Giving tonight. They welcomed patrons to enjoy food at no charge and only pay for drinks. We started with cocktails. I highly recommend the Blackberry lemonade. These can sneak up on you, as they taste non-alcoholic. The Bourbon punch was too acidic for me, even after removing the oranges and lemon wheels from inside the glass. Next visit I want a Maple Old Fashioned. We started with some absolutely delectable Hush puppies. The sauce was just the right blend of spicy heat and flavor to complement the crisp pups. We highly recommend getting these. For entrees, my guest had a pulled pork sandwich. Pork and slaw and pickles stacked on a nicely toasted fresh bun. The sauce is a mustardy Carolina bbq, not a red bbq. Tasty! I opted for the Crispy chicken sandwich. The roll was perfect. The chicken crisp but full of juice inside, nicely done! Fresh slaw and a beautiful layer of pickles underneath it all, made for a tasty treat! I could barely eat half, but I had to try the Collards too. They did not disappoint! Good stuff here. Downtown Detroit is a great place to try new food! The eagle specializes in fried chicken. It has a huge bar and is a fun place to watch sports on tv. Urban barn feel for the interior. Our server was great. Explained the favorites and stopped by to see how we were doing. Did not hover, which I like. We ordered blueberry lemonade, southern salad, Mac n cheese, and a grilled chicken sandwich. All very tasty. The fried chicken is amazing, especially with the hot honey, and the sides are so delicious. The mac and cheese is a MUST TRY. My search for a fine fried chicken dining experience is over. Prior to The Eagle, my girlfriend and I would travel out to Frankenmuth for such, and while we still love it out there, I'm so happy to have the same experience here in Metro Detroit. This is Southern Comfort food, and The Eagle did not disappoint. The fried chicken was beautifully crispy and seasoned. And while the chicken is amazing on its own, drizzling it in hot honey further enhances your tasting experience. Out of the sides, my personal favorites are the sweet potatoes and deep fried hush puppies. I really enjoyed the horseradish mashed potatoes, and while the mac & cheese is my least favorite, it's still good. Their homemade lemonades were also pretty good. The atmosphere is very vibrant in Midtown Detroit, and the staff were wonderful.
