This is one I am tempted to keep to myself. But how can I when I want to shout from the mountain tops (well, rolling hills) how AMAZING The Eagle really is!! There's a story here... Back in April my BF and I were staying in Over the Rhine in Cincy and tried a lot of good restaurants. We stumbled upon The Eagle there and after making sure it got great reviews from yelpers (obvi) we decided to check it out! I believe it was a Thursday night, and a little on the later side I might add, and the wait was still astronomical. We decided to go to another restaurant and ran out of time to go back to The OTR Eagle the rest of the weekend. Fast forward to this past Saturday night and what do we happen to stumble upon?! This new Short North Eagle! The location, while not maybe as charming on the outside as its Cincy sister, is pretty perfect (the old La Fogata for you columbus-ites). It's charm and rustic appeal on the inside is also to die for. Now, I was tempted to make this a technical 4.5 starts because some of the staff was snotty, but the ones that weren't were super friendly and REALLY knew their stuff! The food I would classify as southern comfort and its not a huge menu. But everything we tried was amazing and we left feeling way too full. The food is also a great value with big, shareable portions! It all had a bit of a kick too but nothing that left me panting, just enough to give great flavor. Visited this location after a visit in Cincinnati. Great experience. Food was delicious. The bartender, and our waiter, David, was amazing. Super friendly and helpful. I was here last week (Columbus, OH). The experience was delightful. Very tasteful decor. Tasty food too! Good drinks! Too much alcohol for me though. The drink was sooo strong (loaded with alcohol), the service-centric bartender converted it into three (3) drinks! Whew, much better! Some of the best friend chicken; fresh, huge portions, flying saucers. No, not hormone injected; huge portion in many pieces for the price. This is a good all-American experience in the Great State of Ohio. Nice! During my stay in Ohio, I realize that all the bartenders have heavy hands, they pour lots of alcohol in drinks. The Eagle in OTR is fantastic. The Eagle in Short North is mediocre. This is obvious from the crowd. The Eagle in OTR has a wait. The Eagle here is a ghost town. What's the difference? It's not the food. The food was great. I'm not a big fried chicken fan, but this was good fried chicken. Nice and juicy. Spicy and salty breading. Really good. The brown sugar bacon was great too. Sweet and spicy and just a hint of cayenne. The sides were the best part. The best sweet potatoes I've ever had, with brown sugar and cinnamon and toasted marshmallows. The quickbread was fantastic cornbread with a sweet coating. The mac and cheese was tasty with a crunchy bread crumb and bacon topping. The problem was the service. This location is basically a nice patio with a restaurant attached. We asked to sit on the (inexplicably empty) patio, and they had to hem and haw about whether they were seating people on the patio. What the fuck? This place is pure patio! It wasn't better when we got our table. The beer list doesn't list several of the beers. It has things like "Rhinegeist rotating tap." No. get off your ass and print new menus when you get a new beer. You don't go through them that quickly with your five customers at a time. It's not that hard. As we were eating, we were halfway through our meals and my beer was empty. Our server didn't offer me another beer, but instead brought us the check. Why? I wanted another drink, but you made me feel unwelcome. You had no other tables. Were you looking to get cut? And we asked for waters and you never brought them, a pet peeve of mine. I get it if you're slammed and you forget, but you seriously had one table. You can't remember a couple of waters? Just really poor service. If you're in Cincy, check out the Eagle. Food is good, spent around 300$ for our bill. Our table included 7 people total. Came to dinner around 6:00p.m and they sat us right away, so far so good. We had 3 pitchers od drinks and dinner and just enjoyed having dinner and enjoying everyone's company. Towards the end of our meal our waitress and another staff member came to our table around 3 to 4 times to let us know that our table had a reservation coming up and that we basically needed to gtfo which I found pretty rude as a paying customer, why do I need to rush my meal and drinks with friends because of poor preparation by a restaurant. The food was good, the service was lacking. We waited about 30 minutes for our drinks, which were two cocktails ordered from the menu options. Two other tables around us were sat, ordered and served drinks between the time we ordered them and the time they arrived. I'm fairly certain our server just forgot to put our order in, which happens, but he never addressed it. He just brought the drinks 30 minute later and the food probably 40 minutes after we ordered. And he disappeared for most of that 30 minutes while we waited on the drinks. We started trying to flag him down to ask what was going on but he was nowhere to be found. The couple next to us brought a dog to the patio and the dog received a bowl of water before mine was ever refilled. It was really unfortunate because our food was delicious (chicken, Mac and cheese and hush puppies). And the bourbon punch I ordered was good but not worth a 30 minute wait. The Eagle has one of the best locations in the Short North, and built a very trendy& earthy place inside. I have been here a few times now, and had the exact same experience. I ordered the chicken sandwich, fries & mac and cheese (side are perfect to split) with my friends. You could easily split any of these items and be super full. The chicken is moist, and has a bit of a kick, but not too much. The fries & aioli are to die for- I have ordered them every time. The reason I give it 4 stars is the service. All three times, I was greeted properly and the food came quick. However, once I placed my order the server just disappears. I had to ask for ketchup 3 times& the bill after being finished for 20 minutes each visit. I really think they have the food thing down, but need to improve on their service. read more

Having lived down south(Alabama and Florida) for seven years, I wanted to test this "southern style" establishment. Gotta say, it was pretty darn good. I had the fried chicken breast sandwich. Normally I don't like coleslaw, but it complimented the sandwich well, along with the pickles that came on it. The fried chicken was juicy and nicely prepared. Decided to try a few appetizers as well. I was with a friend so I wasn't that fat that I ate all this by myself. The southern greens & artichoke dip was delicious, along with the mac & cheese that comprised of five cheeses and bread crumbs. We also had to try the cornbread. Not the best. Decent at best. They had a great selection of craft beer. I decided to try their Bloody Mary. Initially I thought $10 for a Bloody Mary was pushing it. That is until I saw it. It was loaded with vegetables and two full pieces of bacon. We also liked that they had a good patio, as it's getting that time of year again. Now, the only real issue we had was service. I try to be very patient as I've worked in the service industry through college. I know sometimes servers neglect the patio area but it wasn't busy. Perhaps they were having a bad day. We had to get up twice to go find our server. Other than that we enjoyed our food. It's not authentic southern food, but not many places are as authentic as they claim to be. And then we got 3 sides, succotash, cornbread, and Mac n cheese and then the 4 piece chicken to share between the two of us. Monday night, Short North. Many places to choose from, but as many times as I've been here I never tried the Eagle. There is a nice outside sitting area on the street side, which I imagine would be great during a warm summer evening. Upon walking in, it is a very good first impression. You're greeted right away by very friendly hostesses. The layout is a large square-shaped bar in the center with tables on the outside walls. Mostly high top booths. The decor is rustic, like you would find in a barbecue restaurant, and blues playing on the speakers. The menu is pretty simple, yet there are plenty of choices. It seems to me that fried chicken is their specialty. I opted not to try it, instead ordering the pork shoulder sandwich with a side of collards (greens). Dang! That was a sandwich. I'm a pretty good eater, but I struggled to complete it. A TON of food. A very generous cut of pulled pork shoulder on a garlic roll with pickled peppers. Great tasting. The greens were very good as well, and a large portion. The only reason this is not a 5-star review is the service at the bar. For a slow Monday night, I expected a tad bit more attention while seated there. It was adequate, though. I'll return to Eagle next time I'm in Columbus and want some comfort food. My young daughter and I stopped in to eat after attending a wake. I'm not familiar with the area or the restaurant but I'm really glad we chose The Eagle. The staff was unbelievably hospitable. It felt like everyone worked as a real team...as opposed to the "every man/woman for themselves." My finicky 3 year old didn't like her noodles (they were a bit tough...but then again, this place doesn't really specialize in kids)...the bartender/waiter graciously offered to bring her a biscuit with jam. Can I just say...AMAZING! I commented on how good the jam was and one of the staff brought us two free sides to-go. From what I witnessed...their fried chicken is King of the House. Sat at the bar, which is our preference, and received fast, friendly, knowledgeable service from all of the bartenders. We shared the 1/2 chicken, grits, mac n cheese, biscuits, bacon, and we didn't order mashed potatoes but they brought them by mistake so they gave them to us. My husband and I first went to The Eagle in Cincy and were thrilled when we learned there was a Columbus location! We went for dinner on a Monday at 6ish. There was plenty of seating outside or inside; we chose outside since it was so nice out and were seated with a party of 2 at a communal style picnic table. The speakers blaring music were a bit much. However the food more than made up for it!! My husband got the quarter white with succotash and I got the half chopped salad. So here's the thing, I'm generally super skeptical at fried chicken at most places. In my experience, most restaurants can't seem to get the flavor right (read: it ends up completely lacking flavor without the assistance of some kind of sauce). However, I was pleasantly surprised by The Eagle. My husband and I ate there for dinner last night, and despite the fact that it was fairly packed, we were seated and served relatively quickly. And most importantly, the food was good! He got the fried chicken sandwich, and I got the 1/4 chicken (dark). We split the mac n cheese, grits, and spoonbread. The chicken was flavorful and just generally delightful. I did not try the accompanying spicy honey, but my husband said it had a kick. The grits were some of my favorite that I've ever had. Again, super flavorful and delicious. The only thing that I wasn't quite into was the mac n cheese. It was a bit too garlicky for me. We were there last Monday and the gentleman working behind the bar was just lovely. Very friendly and personable. We ordered the po' boy, the fried chicken sandwich, and some grits and collards. Everything was fantastic. The grits were spicy too and the collards were warm with lots of vinegar...mmmm. The food gets 5 stars. However I was extremely disappointed that the chicken was more reminiscent of "shake and bake" chicken than true "Southern" fried chicken. The mac and cheese tasted like cheese whiz served over some warm pasta noodles with breadcrumbs on top. The spoonbread was way over cooked and chewy beyong belief. If I could leave zero stars for my experience I would. The eagle used to be a restaurant we visited often, and I'm sad that this is going to change. On Saturday (7/14) night me and three friends visited the eagle around 12:52 at night. It took us longer than anticipated to arrive due to the short north construction. We arrived with intentions to just order a few snacks such as Mac n cheese and French fries, knowing that the kitchen closes at 1:00. Upon our arrival we were greeted by a young man. We ask if it would be okay if we put a quick order of food in. To this he responded "if you want to be that guy" and walked away. This left us confused, so we went to the bar to ask the women if we could order food. We explained the situation, and felt very uncomfortable due to the lack of respect that the young guy showed us. At the point he was sitting at a table socializing with a friend instead of working. We left, and on our way out expressed the situation to the manager. At this time the young man was sitting in the back gossiping and pointing at us, talking to his fiend about our party. I have never felt so disrespected in an establishment and it is safe to say I will never return the to the eagle or any of its sistering companies. My friends and I enjoy eating out, and I totally understand if the kitchen is closing and the employees want to go home. The way this boy talked to us was absolutely disgusting. He walked with entitlement that made me feel sick. These are the people that represent your company and this behavior is absolutely unacceptable, I would never want anyone else to experience this type of interaction. I ordered the half chicken and it was good, but not incredible. I think the sandwich might be my next try as it looked bigger and better. The spicy honey was not my cup of tea to put on the chicken, it made me only taste something hot and not the chicken. The grits although spicy were excellent, some of the best I have tried. The greens were not as good as City BBQ and the Mac n cheese was not as good as homemade mac n cheese. The biscuits and jam were tasty.
