Why have we missed going to The Derby for almost all our entire eating life?! Native to SoCal we have driven by, heard of, missed invites to The Derby for whatever reasons. Last night was our first time there and was like, we've been missing this...why?! Laura our server was phenomenal in service and engagement, then to add into her recommendation of the potatoes romanoff(sp?)!!!. I had the prime rib and boy did it satiate my craving but went beyond with flavor too. The bacon wrapped FM that my wife had was so so so tender and delicious! Our server is a delight! His name is Michael Moffitt. He knows everything about the restaurant and always has a smile and a positive thing to say every time we see him! The food is delicious and my bear loves the seasoning, texture of the prime rib and said it is just right! We are ordering the bananas foster and can't wait to dig in after imbibing in so much food! Not sure what else I can about the Derby other than Wow. Between the ambiance and the food it was a great experience. I started with a wedge salad as an appetizer followed by a bacon wrapped fillet. I also need to mention the garlic bread that I wish I could get back home. My fillet was cooked to perfection, the loaded baked potato was just the right size. Tuesday March 21st 4:15PM Steak houses are awesome! This historical gem is one them :) There is plenty of parking space in the back for parking. Reservations are recommended but we just strolled in because it seemed empty and it was. The host was very nice. It's one of those dim lighted "fancy" restaurants. Think tavern looking place except with a bunch of jockey equipment & art. They will ask you to take off your hat. They can also check your coat in the front as well. Once seated the server will do the usual.. hand menus, waters, drink orders, then they will give you a bit of time to look at the menu. The food takes about 15-20 minutes to come out. They do give you toasted charred garlic cheese bread while you wait. The food wasn't bad! & the vibes were good! Just a frequent amount of table touching [They are almost too attentive. It wouldn't be a minute after receiving something where some servers come by and ask us how the food or drink is. Probably not a good spot for a date but good with family or friends! I just wanted a moment to enjoy my food in peace for 5 minutes but sadly that wasn't the case.] Downside is that the valet was rude so we decided just to park ourselves. We've been here many times, and we're always delighted by the food and service. Since it's the tail-and of the holidays, the place was warmly and festively decorated. The food reminds one of booth-y, cozy restaurants of the past, but it's so excellently prepared it rivals the finest modern cuisine. Last night six of us celebrated my husband's 78th birthday celebration at The Derby. The service was very slow. We arrived at our reservation at 5:30 pm and didn't finish until 7:30. This is entirely too long to have dinner without appetizers for six people! They food was good, but not spectacular, just adequate. They didn't bring out our dinners for a long time and we were all so hungry. We had to ask for more bread because it wasn't offered during our very long wait for our main courses, and we didn't order anything complicated or unusual. 4/16/26 brought a friend in for a nice lunch , who just finished treatment for cancer. It was unusually slow and was seated immediately, but wasn't given water for 10 minutes. We were basically ignored and I had to call over the busboy and ask why we hadn't received something to drink, which is usually upon being seated. We were both thirsty and felt the Derby should at least provide such a basic service. Our waitress apologized and was great trying to make up for us being left without something to drink. Management provided a survey and reached out to offer a free desert, which is usually complimentary anytime I've taken my wife. I feel management at the very least should comp our next meals or 50 percent off for a long term customer. There's other steak houses locally will gladly take our business, maybe try elsewhere read more

Love this old school steakhouse! They have a red leather seat sort of vibe in the bar area. Last minute decided to come here for St. Patrick's day. I got their corned beef special which was delicious. Husband got the filet and we split a wedge salad. Only downside was that their WiFi had been down for 6 hours so they had to take our credit card info by hand as well as a hand written check. Our waitress was extremely apologetic. Also worth noting we sat outside in their covered patio area and it was quite nice! Enclosed and heated, didn't feel much like we were outside. We made a reservation and got a nice booth - they had a special menu for the day so we decided to order a couple of things: the shrimp cocktail and tuna crudo to start and then the sea bass for two and citrus grilled carne asada. The starters: I love the cheesy bread they start you off with for free! We got two rounds and thoroughly enjoyed them ha! The shrimp cocktail sauce was refreshing and flavorful and the tuno crudo had a nice kick to it that I really enjoyed! Onto the mains! I would have to say the sea bass was pretty disappointing: for $100 it was just a plain piece of fish (presentation and taste). I honestly felt like it tasted like nothing and we had to dip it into the carne asada sauce. The carne asada was slightly better - good sauce and veggies but nothing special. The best part of the meal were the drinks and dessert. I got the affirmed that was so SO good and the dessert trio was the highlight of the night, with the bread pudding being an all around favorite! Best steak i've had in California. Quality meat. Quality cook. They have an amazing christmas atmosphere inside too (ate here in December) Their waiters seem highly trained and are very friendly and professional. Don't be afraid to share the 16oz portions of meat. Bottled wine is decently priced. Overall, worth the price which they charge, did not leave disappointed. One thing to note, their restaurant policy is to card for their NA Beer that has 0.5% alcohol, Heineken 0.0 they do not card. read more

Have never been to this iconic restaurant but thoroughly enjoyed the experience. My husband went with his father after a day at the race track when he was a boy and had very fond memories. The decor was beautiful, of an era gone by but one that really resonated with us because we just bought a 100 year old home with the same structural elements. Beautiful! We were served by Ally, a beautiful, spirited young lady that was absolutely delightful with a beautiful smile - we really felt she wanted to create an exceptional customer experience and she did! We will likely ask for her when we return. The food was amazing! Started with the oysters Rockefeller which had wonderful flavor but not as done as I would prefer. Still good but I do not like raw oysters and underneath they were a tiny bit slimy. Next time I will just ask they leave the in a bit longer, but the flavor was great! I had the Atlantic salmon with capers and lemon butter sauce with a side of herb couscous, my husband had the Chilean sea bass with fresh string beans on a bed of brown rice. Both were delicious- especially loved the herbed couscous! The free valet is also impressive . The Derby will be on our list to return the next time we spend a day at the track. First time dining at this historic restaurant that a friend had recommended. I was at the Starbucks across the street and saw the sign that they were serving Brunch on Safurdays and Sundays. I made reservations for 10:30 am that day. All around excellent visit. the moment we walked in, we were greeted with a very warm smile from the young woman in the front. The restaurant was beautiful and felt clean. Everything looked well taken care of. Service and food were very good. I had the Eggs Benedict with salmon. My daughter had the Prime Rib French dip. Wow! Recently celebrated an anniversary here and The Derby helped it make a fabulous experience. We ran into traffic on the way there, and they were understanding that we were arriving later than expected for our dinner reservation. The entire staff was cheerful and helpful throughout the evening. We both had the baron-wrapped filet mignon, which apparently "the steak that made The Derby famous." It was cooked perfectly in both cases (medium rare and medium). We also had the calamari as an appetizer, which was really good. I've never seen calamari like theirs -- shaped more like mozzarella sticks and presented really well. They had a bit of a kick to them, which we liked. We each had a great martini (both espresso and dirty), and at the end of the evening we received a happy surprise -- two servings of Baked Alaska, flame and all! The classic vibe and decor were everything we'd hoped for, since we love historic places like this. The Derby is definitely legit and we'll be back very soon. read more

Overall, the food was above par for our party of four, generous 2oz pours from the bar, but unfortunately my NY Strip was overdone. A simple classic American restaurant here in the city of Arcadia. This place is a staple here in Arcadia and I haven't been back in over 20 years. We came in with a reservation for 12 people and had to wait about 5 minutes. They combined two tables together and fit all of us pretty well. Shoutout to the service here, it certainly is top notch. I ended trying out the lunar new year menu which came with an appetizer, entree, wine, and dessert. I tried out these items. Garlic Cheese Bread - Complimentary and it's pretty good. Buttery goodness. (4/5) Tuna Carpaccio - Wow this is a must try. Raw Tuna mixed with all the goodies. Super fresh. (5/5) Prime Rib - I got this with the baked potato and had it medium rare. It's perfect, tender and good texture. Perfectly seasoned. (5/5) Grass Fed Ribeye - Perfect texture but a tad salty. It was charred nicely. (4.5/5) Cheesecake - It's interesting and the cheese part is really thick. It's good! (4/5) Baked Alaska - First time having this and it's delicious. They gave us a huge two plates for free because we celebrated a birthday. Fed all 12 of us! It's vanilla ice cream burnt with 151 and fire. Delicious. (5/5) My only complaint was we had to wait about an hour for our entree but we did have a large party. When the food was ready everyone got the food at the same time which was good. Food was delicious and what really made this an experience was the service so shoutout to them. It's expensive so would only come for occasion. 12 of us spent $772 worth of food so expect anywhere from $60-$100 per person. Worth a try! read more

List me among the people who will not return to the Derby anytime soon. On Dec 14, my party of seven hoped to celebrate my 80th birthday with 7:30 pm dinner at the Derby. I made the reservation looking forward to a delicious medium-rare prime rib. Imagine my chagrin when our server informed me the Derby had run out of prime rib! What steak house runs out of prime rib??!! I was very disappointed, but I changed my order to their rib-eye steak. After about ten minutes our server returned with our meals. She informed me that they had found a prime-rib steak, and she placed it in front of me. I took a couple of bites of the steak and discovered that it was a dry, cold piece of meat. I at about a third of it, not wanting to make a scene while my party enjoyed their meals. Two days later I returned to the Derby and spoke to the lunchtime manager, a man named Tyler. I told him what had happened and asked what he was going to do about my bad experience. Looking down his nose, he told me he would have to check the video to see if my steak had indeed been reheated. He took my phone number and said he would get back to me within the week. It is now three weeks later and I have not heard from him or anyone else at the Derby. To add insult to injury, I had won the fund-raising racing game the restaurant offered. I submitted my claim for the voucher. Tyler took my phone number, saying the Derby would text me my $50 food voucher. Still waiting for that. The one star I am giving the Derby is for the thoughtful service of Heather, our food server. She tried her best to fix the prime-rib problem. My complaint is with my shoddy treatment by the restaurant and its day manager. Apparently, they don't need my OR your business, even after our party dropped more that $700 in food and drinks that evening. read more
