Then I came here on a morning to show off it's menu to a visitor from the Mid-West. WE ALL HAD AN AMAZING BREAKFAST. There is nothing like having all four people in one group be at least satisfied, if not delighted by their breakfast. Finally, I came here to hang out with a friend who just wanted to chat, but not be at a bar on a Saturday night. Guess what, The Coupe can satisfy such a taste, and not break your bank. Their mini lounge is open until 11pm, and then they close up the main restaurant area and keep the bar area open, which still has booths and tables, but definitely louder. Another place that was plagued by not-so-great reviews. It deserved better! The spacious restaurant was in a great location on 11 st, really nice venue with an interesting layout on one wing was the dining area and the other was a casual lounge/bar. The focal area as you walked in was the coffee area where the baristas were busy with making aromatic coffees to the slight right a comfortable seating area for people who want to relax or read a book. We arrived slightly earlier than our brunch buddies. I put our name down on the list it was a reasonable wait about 15-20 min. So when our friends arrived we seated shortly after. Unfortunately the trend of not having reservation can lead to a long wait but we went early to avoid there. Our server was wonderful she was attentive and jovial she attempted to four glasses of water in her hand subsequently carrying lots of items at one go to our table. I ordered an orange juice and lavender camomile tea that came in a stacked tea pot/cup the tea leaves was placed in an open infuser. Recently I had my bf's delicious gravlax so I was really in the mood to have the egg benedict with basil gravlax it came with a nice crunchy hash brown and I asked for an additional bowl of fruits. The guys had cappuccinos that came with a few animal crackers we were all having fun with munching on the animal crackers so my friend asked if we could more the server came back with a saucer plate full of it. This place is super popular/crowded for what reason, I'm not entirely sure. I believe it is open 24 hours and it's remarkably more upscale hip than IHOP and Denny's. But man, this is probably the old lady in me speaking, it's hella loud and crowded. And the vegan french toast was disappointing. We got into town a bit late and The Coupe was a brief walk away. Made sense at the time. Naturally there was a bit of wait, so we moseyed on over to the bar area and ordered some adult beverages (not super cheap, but definitely not the priciest in D.C.). My cranberry vodka was quite weak sauce! But the one that followed during dinner was barely tinted pink, so that partially made up for it. I mean it is a little bit adorable and I could envision it being a place that I would like to congregate at with a few friends, but it was just so very cramped, dark, and noisy. After a moderately extended wait, we were seated on the bar side. Despite it being ridiculously crowded, our server was tip top throughout our meal, regularly checking on us and whatnot. However, as I mentioned previously, the the vegan french toast was quite subpar. It consisted of a three generous cut crusty baguette slices dusted with powder sugar, cinnamon, and some sort of apple sauce? You would think with such a heavy concentration of um, hipstery patrons, there would be a little more effort dedicated to the vegan french toast, but nope! I did notice a few other menu items classified as "vegan," but man, what a bummer about the french toast. I think my two companions were satisfied with their selections and the side of ratatouille. Also worth mentioning, the portions are pretty much one portion - which is fine by me. Above-average food and pretty good customer service. Easygoing vibe inside and out. I do like the ambiance, but it's too rich for my blood. Breakfast for my son and I came to $39 (without a tip). We got fairly standard breakfast fare; our plates were not brimming with food. My order did not come with any bread whatsoever (meaning that it was not an oversight by our waiter). And no free coffee refills. I gotta say, that one really took me by surprise. Maybe there is some kind of change in the restaurant world here in the DMV, but it's the very first time I have ever been denied a free refill of coffee for breakfast at a sit-down establishment ANYWHERE. I've been going out to eat for a considerable number of years in DC--still shaking my head in disbelief. Perhaps The Coupe could consider a small "warm-up", if requested. I had been to the Coupe maybe a few weeks after it opened on a Friday night. Service was maddeningly slow, but I wasn't ready to write it off just yet. The mint tea was good and cheap, and the griddled banana cake was about what I'd expect from a slice of banana bread warmed on a griddle. Those two items were one of the few combinations I could get under $10; many items of menu were and still are overpriced. But I loved the space, at least on the right side of the restaurant with the small coffee area with a few couches, two-person tables by the floor to ceiling window, and a bar area. I wanted to give the Coupe another chance before I passed judgment; and especially so after reading the owner's open letter on Prince of Petworth. Especially evocative was his statement that we, the customers, didn't have to tell the management about our disappointment; they could see it on our faces as we walked out. True, that. I thought it was a nice sentiment that they were taking criticism seriously and planned to take action. At least, I thought they took action. it is clearly too soon. Now, the barbeque shrimp my friend had, a small plate selection on the menu despite maybe around $9, was perfectly fine, so he said. The corn and andouille fritter was a nice touch. I had my mint tea, a dependable stand-by. But the white bean hummus was an atrocity. I literally had one bite of it and decided I couldn't take anymore. I've never had that experience in a restaurant before, where I just couldn't even look at it. It was a big serving in a cute glass pot too. But even if I liked the hummus, there was no point in serving me that big of a portion when the vegetables and bread served with it were so meager. Service was coolly indifferent and just as slow as I remembered. I can only give the Couple one star because I know I will never visit again, I can never recommend this place to anyone I like and, well, I had a really, really unfortunate hummus appetizer. read more

This is my first Yelp review and the only reason I felt inclined to do so was because I was so surprised to see the low rating The Coupe has from previous customers. I went there this past Sunday for brunch with a friend and could not be happier with my experience there. The atmosphere was really welcoming, one of those places you can tell have a lot of regulars. My friend had suggested The Coupe after reading it on the blog, "Bitches Who Brunch" (I hope my reference to this blog doesn't change your perception of my review). Anyways, we were seated the minute we walked in with no trouble at all. After fighting over which one of us could order the Gravalax Benedict, the waitress suggested I get Grits and Grillades which I happily agreed to. It was delicious, tender as can be. My friend loved her benedict as well. After, we shared an almond croissant and apple strudel, both warmed to perfection. Not to mention that our coffee and hot chocolate were perfect temperature as well. By the time we left, the line was out the door with bright-eyed young adults and families alike. Bottom line, I was happy with the quick service and the good eats. Definitely coming back. Hope others will do the same, although I don't want it becoming to popular 'cause then I might have to wait for a table next time! read more

I want to like The Coupe. DC needs more places that have breakfast (not brunch), and more places that are open late. But I just can't get behind it. After going there, I can't decide if I'd rather just have a bowl of frosted mini wheats and watch Good Morning America. At least the mini wheats are free. Our server took forever to arrive, and I can understand that if it's a busy place. But it wasn't. He brought us our diet cokes and then disappeared for awhile. Diet cokes empty, no server. He comes back and takes our order. I get bagel and lox, my husband get the pancakes and a side of sausage. A while later, food comes. I get my breakfast and the pancakes arrive, no sausage. We asked for sausage again. No sausage. Now, bagels and lox are an art form. The items should go in a specific order. If nothing else, capers go on cream cheese, with salmon on top. This keeps little round pickled berries from sliding off the bagel. They missed that memo, but so do a lot of restaurants--I'll cut them some slack on that. But there was basically no cream cheese on my bagel. Someone in the back had waved cream cheese over it, hoping that the aura of cream cheese coated the bagel. Whoa, tiger--that's what makes it worthwhile. And it was just...meh. He brings me some more but it's just not the same. Still no sausage. Empty diet cokes. My husband finishes his breakfast just as the sausage arrives. And then we see our server leave the restaurant. Bye bye, server. Turned out to be good for us, as the woman who took over our table was actually attentive. Refilled diet cokes, and finally brings us the check. How has it taken us more than an hour to eat breakfast? The sausage is on the bill but we asked her to take it off and she does so. It's not that the food is terrible. It's just that I'd rather save my money and eat my mini wheats as opposed to eating something that's just okay and having it take a long time and be pricey. read more

The taste isn't that bad but it was warm and chunky which is definitely not what you would expect or want from a smoothie. I got the tofu tostada and it was pretty good and my husband really liked the burrito he got! Our food came out fast and was hot which was great! Didn't love the vibe on the inside and the service wasn't very friendly which was a shame (our server was great though! I don't remember his name but he was tall! The other staff members we pretty aloof). Food was hot, quick, and relatively good. That smoothie was honestly disgusting though. I don't think I would ever go back. Tucked off on the corner of 11th & Monroe, this was for sure a hidden treasure for us. The staff is efficient and the food is quickly served to your table after ordering. The atmosphere inside is rustic & modern decorated with chalk boards and booth style seating tables. Long rectangular windows for each booth that are perfect for catching a glimpse of the neighborhood while enjoying a nice meal. The bar are is separate from the dining area so parents, go ahead and bring the kid for a nice family dinner. Our food was flavorful and easily customizable to our diet needs/restrictions. One of my favorite places when I visited DC over my spring break. This cute cafe/bar hybrid was the perfect place to have Easter brunch. My husband and I were seated at one of the high tops in the bar section but they have tons of seating in other locations - maybe even outside when the weather is nice. The couches in the front look like a good place to unwind and have a coffee with a friend. The way this place serves coffee is SO CUTE! Both our coffees came with a few animal crackers which I thought was an excellent touch. I had ordered the special that came with pancakes, eggs, a hashbrown, and a meat. I actually was able to sub the meal for fruit since I'm vegetarian which I really appreciated. There was nothing too special about my meal. My husband on the other hand ordered a hashbrown bowl that was awesome! It has jalapenos and was cheesy and delicious. I found myself jealous of his meal! This place was definitely a highlight for me and I would recommend it to anyone visiting in the area. read more

The Coupe used to be open for 24 hours but recently transitioned back to regular open to close times. Not that I ever really came for late night food but having somewhere in DC with that option was a luxury! I love The Coupe because it's really one of the only places in Columbia Heights where I feel like I can come for hours and get work done. The only thing I really despise is that most of the booths and tables here don't have any plugs. When I do come for food (which is most of the time) I get the California or Coupe burger and finish the meal with a chaipuccino. Their desserts are really great too! When it was colder they had these apple cinnamon doughnuts on the menu that were a little taste of heaven. And recently, I had the banana beignets, which were also good but could've been a little moister and sweeter. If you're in the Columbia Heights area, check it out! And if you're in Adams Morgan you should also check out Tryst, the owner's sister restaurant, which also serves chaipuccinos, delicious desserts, and great food! read more

This is less of a review of The Coupe itself and more of thank you to Gwynne, the absolute best barista in the world. My GF and I lived in the same building as The Coupe for 2 years and got to know Gwynne over time. Despite moving a thousand miles an hour all the time, she always found time to greet us with a smile and at least some friendly small talk - but always liked getting down right when it opened so we could chat for a bit. She makes killer coffee and even when it's absolutely slammed on a weekend, we always got the same great coffee and amazing hospitality. I don't often comment about service of restaurants, however I felt the need to comment this time. I was blown away, flabbergasted even, at the level of care that my girlfriend and I received. The waitress (her name was Madeline) was the sweetest, most genuine worker I have ever experienced. She was extremely patient and understanding and constantly had my girlfriend and I smiling. The food was also great, but didn't compare to the atmosphere and service that the Coupe provided. I would definitely recommend this restaurant and would recommend anyone asking for Madeline if you want to get your food on time and smile the whole time! read more

Since the change of management this place has sadly not been the same. The quality and preparation of the food has been mediocre and the cocktails just aren't how they used to be. Even brunch is a no go, as they took away all the favorites from their menu. The place just has a different vibe with the staff but not in a negative way. Cute spot in Columbia Heights. Cafe by day and bar by night. The standout here is the chicken katsu sandwich. Go get it now. It's crispy, it's juicy, it's all things good about a chicken sandwich. Served with French fries this meal can easily feed two. Brussels sprouts were crunchy and a great way to start the meal. It is sad the number of places that sell hot chocolate (or that are even opened) after 10 PM on a cold-ish wintry Saturday night. A friend suggested this place after I expressed a craving for hot chocolate, so we made the trek up to Columbia Heights after visiting a dark National Christmas Tree (seriously, who turns off Christmas tree lights at 10:30 PM?!) Anyway, what's there to not like about this place? There's sit-down dining for those inclined to pay tip, and there's self-serve couches and high tables for those craving a more casual (or studying) environment. We all ordered the hot chocolate, and it came with marshmallows! Yes, I'm easily pleased, and the hot chocolate made my night. We also got the Chocolate Birthday Cake to complete our decadent evening. Service was great, and despite being in the self-serve section, we were given fancy napkins and forks (without having to get them ourselves). Maybe I'll be giving this place a 2-star the next time I come and order actual food... but until then I'm glad this place is opened 24/7! read more

Wow I'm shocked this place has 3.5 stars. Visiting DC and ate here per recommendation from a friend and I'm glad I did. I had the breakfast sandwich on the everything bagel with the garlic aioli and it was phenomenal! Couldn't ask for anything more. This is one of my favorite places to hang out in Columbia Heights. The food can be a little hit and miss, but the atmosphere is fantastic. I've never been disappointed when coming here. Sometimes, I have even been impressed by the food. Other times, there are some technical issues with the execution. For example, I love the Cuban sandwich. It was surprisingly delicious. However, the savory Belgian waffle with tomato jam was both dry, dull and missing crucial flavors. Over all the menu is pretty interesting and changes often enough that I'm bound to find something to enjoy. The reason I love this place, however, isn't because of the menu. It's the place itself. It's airy, full of the comfortable, eclectic decor. It's just a cool place to hang. Whether you're here for conversation with friends over a few glasses wine, or if you're here to power through some work on a weekend--it's a great place to be. It's open, inviting, not-too-quiet and not-too-loud cafe with decent unintrusive service. This is a classic neighborhood joint. For 9pm on a Friday night, we were seated and served so quickly that I didn't have to wonder once where our wonderful waiter, Jason, was. I got the Coupe Fries and my boyfriend got the Coupe Burger with their mac n' cheese. My order was perfectly seasoned and prepared, and I loved how creative it was! Unexpected but definitely not disappointed. The burger was also delicious and juicy, but the mac n' cheese was a little on the mediocre side. Not bad enough to really warrant much complaint, though. Also: try the shakes!! The espresso milkshake I got was so yummy that I wanted to order three more. ME: mango-peach mimosa HE: bloody kickboxer (a super duper spicy Bloody Mary) Entrées! ME: waffle sandwich -- chicken apple sausage, eggs and a soft, semi-crisp waffle. The sausage was good, just didn't taste like chicken apple to me. HE: ...was NOT impressed with the chicken & waffles. AT ALL. It's honestly better at home. Perhaps more glaze was needed? Appetizer! WE: salmon deviled eggs -- plentiful (you get 6), but just OK. They look so well-seasoned, so this was the biggest disappointment of them all. There are plenty of menu items to choose from and breakfast is served all day. Would definitely make a return visit for more drinks and different entrées -- maybe dinner or just dessert. Overall, nothing was horrible (just bland). Everything needed more seasoning and/or extra sauce. read more

Ok, I have been here a million times for the 24 hour study time period because this damn dissertation refuses to sprout fingers and type itself. This was my first time eating lunch. It's actually a 2.5 score, but I rounded up because of all my previous use of their 24 hour open timeframe. The man and I ordered the brunch burger and it was a yummy looking creation with a ??homemade?? English muffin, egg, bacon and a big ole slab of ground beef with a side of fries. Pretty to look at, not so awesome to eat. The burger was done well when I asked for medium, the egg was over easy when I asked for over medium, and the worst offense is that the burger had NO seasoning at ALL. At the end of the meal, I asked our server about that and he gave the excuse that they choose to not use seasoning to make sure everyone's happy. Ummmmm, NO seasoning?? Seems odd to me, but if you say so sir. (Side eye inserted) The fries were meh and the ginger ale typical, but the ambience in that place is awesome, from the decor to the music. Oh and a pint (not even standard, more like slightly smallish) of domestic beer for 6 dollars - exciting. Basically... it gets the job done... but don't do your 30th birthday here. read more

Cool brunch spot in Columbia Heights. I came here while visiting some friends. The space itself is huge! It includes both bar seating (a large bar) and a cafe section for those that just rather stop in for a quick cup of coffee. We were told the wait for 3 would be 20-30 minutes but we were seated in around 15. Our drinks were all great but my Masala Chai, specifically, was delicious. Served in a loose leaf tea strainer, you can keep the spices steeping as long you want. In terms of food, the apple fritters come out piping hot and, as my North Carolinian friends say, are just like the county fair. I also got the chicken & waffles (photo to follow) which had the perfect chicken, juicy and the crunchy. Other notable mentions are their pancake stack (came with about 5 pancakes) and their chicken biscuit was HUGE. I would've given them four stars except out server was pretty checked out and non-responsive throughout our entire meal. That said, we made it work with our little group and had a great time. Bonus: they have comfortable seating next to the cafe section that you can sit on while you wait for your table and they have children's books too (including one of my favorites, Don't Let The Pigeon Drive The Bus)! read more

One of my favorite brunch spots in DC. The food options are delicious, with fresh ingredients and fair (for DC) prices. Some food recommendations: The hash brown bowl is fantastic! I don't eat pork, and they let me replace it with delicious chicken sausage. The vegetables, especially the jalapenos, were delicious, the egg was cooked perfectly, and the hash browns are my favorite in DC. The hash browns are my favorite in DC. They also serve them at Open City. Large, crispy, and salty. The fried brussels sprouts are delicious - even if you don't normally like brussels sprouts, I would recommend trying these. I also shared the spinach eggs benedict with my friend. Although it was good, it wasn't my favorite (try the crab cake benedict at Luna Cafe in Dupont), and the portion was a bit small. We waited more than one hour, probably closer to an hour and a half to be seated even though there were many tables empty. When we were finally seated and ordered, we expected fresh hot food. We ordered scrambled eggs, sunny side eggs and a burrito. All the food delivered was cold as if it had been prepared ahead of time. The toast was cold, the eggs were cold, the hashbrowns were cold. The burrito was tasteless. It was as if the food was on an assembly line and prepared ahead of time and just given out. The food should've been fresh and delivered fresh and hot from the stove. Very underwhelming and disappointing. Completely not recommended. We expected to be satisfied and we weren't. read more

If I had one spot in DC, it would be The Coupe. I come here usually once a week or every two weeks and get breakfast or brunch. The food is so great and im obsessed with the hashbrowns (picture the McDonald's hashbrown but better). They also have great burgers for when you're craving one and a nice selection of teas. They have a seasonal menu but their summer panzella is one of my favorite things on the menu. Only criticisms: 1) no free refills on coffee and the tea is in too small of a cup. They give you a lot of beautiful loose tea and then put it in a tiny mug. They need to get steeper pots. 2) i think the portions have gotten smaller recently. For example, the benedict now only comes with the hashbrown, and no fruit or anything else. Sometimes I'm a little hungry afterwards. Overall though, it's one of my favorite spots and I can't say enough good things. read more

If you're a fan of Tryst, or the Diner, the Coupe is right your alley, playing the role of coffee shop, cafe and bar all in one in the 11th St neighborhood. The Good - mimosa floats - try it, you won't regret it. What's not to like about bubbly mimosa with a dollop of ice cream? Nothing! Also the brussels sprouts with pine nuts, brown butter, and lemon aioli were to die for .. perfectly done, the right amount of crispyness, and paired excellently with the aioli. Service was also on point - others have complained but our server was perfectly pleasant and consistently available during our visit. The Meh - The tunisian baked eggs were just okay ... but I suppose that's what I get for ordering a tunisian dish in an American style restaurant. The dish was way too oily for my liking, and did not have enough merguez. Bottomline, if you are looking for a cute coffee shop to get work/studying done, or to catch up with friends - this is your place. If you're looking for a foodie adventure, the coupe is probably not going to leave you satisfied. read more
