Great friendly staff that will hand you your drink quickly and bring hot food directly to your chosen seat. Sitting outside on a nice day is relaxing and comfortable. This place is decent. For the price the coffee is a pretty big size. Service is great and the inside is cool. However I wasn't super impressed with the iced vanilla latte. Initial taste was good but it had a strange after taste- similar to the aftertaste of some sugar free syrups so that could have been it. I would for sure come back tho and try again! Not the best coffee in the area but I like that they are open relatively late. The outdoor space is also nice. I like the con leche better than the cold brew, but neither of them are amazing. The bacon egg cheese croissant is good but expensive. I think they get fresh croissants every day and sometimes run out later in the afternoon. read more

I came here on a wet and cold Saturday afternoon, and I ordered a medium cappuccino, as well as, a butterscotch brownie. This cafe is wonderful, and I've come here a couple of times. I usually sit out on the enclosed patio, however, today was definitely not the day for it. The have a heating element for the patio, but it wasn't turned on today. So I basically plopped down at one of the side tables inside. This place is definitely nice during the summer months tough, and it's nice to be able to sit and chill with friends while sipping a cool coffee or Expresso. They have over 40 different coffee beans, and plenty of good lunch options as well. The brownie that I ordered today, tasted like it was baked today! I got a coffee which was not good, considering this is called 'Java House'. The staff is so unfriendly and unhelpful. After I left the place, I found my phone missing. I went back and asked to borrow their phone to call 911. They did not offer any assistance at all and kept asking for the phone back. They would not offer to lend me a cellphone. I asked if I can call my bank since my card was on the phone, and they refused. I told the manager that I called the police and will need access to the video and he actually laughed at me and went into the kitchen and would not talk to me. A kind lady lent me her phone and I called my bank to cancel the card. So yeah, bad coffee, bad customer service. I wonder why people in the neighborhood would come to this place with bad coffee and not very neighborly. read more

I came here with a friend of mine on a Saturday late morning. We both ordered iced coffees, I got a chocolate croissant and he got a ham egg and cheese on a croissant. We both liked the coffee (though I'm not much of a coffee drinker so I can't compare it to others). I enjoyed my chocolate croissant, but my friend said his breakfast sandwich was bland and greasy. A lot of people were getting their sandwiches on bagels, so I think maybe the croissant was (at least part of) the culprit. We went up to the counter to order - there seemed to be confusion on whether to do that, or sit at a table and wait for someone to approach. I'm definitely going to give this place additional chances now that I live in the neighborhood - I see several "regulars" every day on my walk to work, so this place must be doing something right! I was walking by and decided to step in for a cappuccino on the nice patio! I was undecided what to pick being my first time here and the staff was unhelpful with options. Meh coffee, decent food, definitely a hit or miss service. The people here weren't too nice to me. Ordering was such a painful process. I ordered a small latte and the lox bagel plate for here. The lady took my card, swiped it, gave my card back, and goes on with the people that came in. Do I need to sign anything? Where's my receipt? I had to ask for it and all I got was snappy attitude. However, I sense that some people here are regulars, so they were all nice-y nice with each other. My latte was overly hot, and there was absolutely no foam on it. What??? It didn't taste that great too, which is highly disappointing because the name of this place is Java House, which is quite ironic. I expected them to have great cafe drinks, but I would prefer Starbucks to this overpriced, sub mediocre latte any day. My lox plate was packed in a to go container. Well, I didn't ask for to go, but whatever. The cream cheese was frozen, thick. Luckily I found a table to sit down to smear the cream cheese on the bagel when it was still warm, so at least there's that. It also came with onions (yuck), capers (yuck), 2 tomato slices, a piece of lettuce, and of course, the lox. There was not enough lox to cover my 2 bagel halves. What a disappointment. The Java House is a corner coffee shop off of Dupont Circle. It's an unassuming and humble joint that serves basic coffee and baked items. It's nothing fancy but it's in a great location, and most importantly, the wifi is free, fast, and reliable. Let's say you're waiting for a restaurant to open or you're just killing time in the area, Java House is a great place to sit and people-watch since they have outside seating as well. Service is generally slow, but very friendly -- if you're in a rush, pick up your food at the counter and bring it to a table yourself. Absolute trash. Still waiting for them to learn how to toast a bagel without burning it...This is the second time they have done this to me this week. When I have asked them to be more careful they simply glare at me or start speaking to each other in another language. You might ask, "why do you keep coming back?" - well, it's cold, it's rainy, and this is the closest store that sells bagels in my area. Jeeze, what does it take to get 5 stars on here? This coffee shop has been here since before anyone heard of Starbucks and all the other coffee chains. Its locally owned, has fabulous coffee which is roasted right in the cafe, and the service is far superior to what you can find at the chains. Go more than twice and they'll remember who you are. Try that at Caribou. The outdoor cafe is tree-covered, quiet and pleasant. It is also always kept clean. I've been to so many chain coffeeshop patios where you have to step over the trash and hope to find a table that isn't sticky. The deserts are good, and the menu includes delicious breakfasts, salads and sandwiches. This is just the kind of place that our urban neighborhoods need to support. I would have given them a glowing review, until yesterday. It has been brought to my attention that you now have to pay a quarter to use their restrooms. Now don't get me wrong, I understand the necessity to detract a certain element from squatting, but after paying an inflated amount of money for an underwhelming cup of coffee I could have paid Ray Charles to make, I now have to allocate 25 cents to use your bathroom as well? And you don't even bother to have your staff make the extra effort to clean the bathroom now that you have a cover charge attached to its use? And don't get me started on those dry, inedible desserts to compliment the dry, unbecoming, unprofessional staff ya'll have at the registers! Can you pretend that you like your job? I won't care if you fake it, but you're manipulating my beverage and I'd like for your energy to reflect that it's no bother to assist me. The egg is made from actual eggs, neatly folded onto the pillow'y bagel sandwich along with the gooey cheese. Finally, the bacon stole the show for me. Healthy portions of savory salty bacon top off this morning delight. Also, to-go order was smartly wrapped in aluminum foil to lock in the heat and prevent the melted cheese from solidifying - too many shops miss this crucial detail! Overall, a solid morning sandwich which is often too large for me to finish in a single sitting (hurray for leftovers!). Ok ok, I understand some of the negative comments on here about credit cards and ambiance etc. Consumers nowadays don't have the same cash carrying habits of older generations, and perhaps the owner could invest in some new furniture and/or lighting (or in my opinion, take more advantage of the huge floor to ceiling windows). But I get the feeling that many people in the neighborhood like Java House just the way it is. Like the old man said to his wife of many years, "please never change." At the end of the day this is a solid, down-to-earth coffee shop with killer food. I decided to try the coffee in this place and I could barely drink it. It basically tastes like a k-cup coffee gone bad. I basically didn't finish my drink and just decided to get tea at the Indian place nearby. I guess the one nice thing about the place is the location. People gather, sit, read and chat. They have a nice outdoor space/patio. I can't really speak on the food since I didnt eat there, but I ended up getting a frosted mocha. Im still trying to decide if it was worth $7.00 and some change. It was delicious! I ducked in here to escape the torrential summer rain that started up without warning. The employees there weren't too happy that day--or perhaps were just exhausted at the mere thought of serving the 10 people that came in within a few minutes. After pondering for awhile, I decided to treat myself to a rather expensive frozen mocha, and asked if they could make it with soy. The lady rang me up, swiped my card, and THEN told me that there's no milk, so no need to sub with soy. This struck me as odd, but I trusted her. She's correct--they don't use milk. They use coffee, and chocolate ice cream. I was rather annoyed that it wouldn't occur to them that if I asked for soy, that I might be lactose intolerant, and might not be able to take ice cream?! Anyways, they handed me my drink, and given that they were overworked, and I don't typically react too badly to ice cream, I decided not to raise a fuss. When the rain cleared, I walked quickly back home, taking a few sips of my drink. It was SUPER, super sweet, and a rather unpleasant goopey texture. I also think I got some stale choco ice cream, because it definitely had that "freezer" taste to it. So--the soy thing, plus a very "meh" drink, at a higher than normal price puts it at a 2, in my book. Given that it's the area, I might give it another try--and order real coffee, rather than anything with ice cream, next time. read more

3.5 stars If I may confess that I'm a little afraid to write this review because I'm still in said coffeeshop? After staying at Tryst for a guilt-inducing amount of time, I trekked down to 17th St to explore an area of DC (and by "DC," I mean, "NW DC," and by "NW DC," I mean, "An area between Dupont Circle and Adams Morgan") that I hadn't known existed. Such a cute neighborhood! So family friendly, but so young at the same time. In need of wireless, I stumbled upon Java House. I popped in, first searching for a plug for my 5.5 year old laptop. Luckily, two of the three outlets in the whole cafe were available. With that out of the way, I ordered an obligatory cup of coffee (because "free wireless" is never actually free. Good grief.) The service was a bit cold, borderline scary. The server woman gave me a look so harsh, I was afraid to ask for decaf, so I ordered a small cup of regular joe, knowing it would hurt my stomach (ugh, I am so old). At least she said, "You're welcome," when I said, "Thank you." And she was capable of laughing when she answered a phone call, so I know her heart's not made of stone. There is a phenomenal selection of coffee by the bean, if you like getting your grind on. They seemed reasonably priced to me, between $11-12. The house blend I had wasn't bad; not too strong, but a little bitter with a forgettable aftertaste. I didn't try the food, but the fruit tarts and cakes look amazing. Ambiance-wise, Java House reminds me of a shrunken diner, with a lunch counter and all. And there's a surprising amount of seating for such a small spot. But it's the outdoor seating that brings people here. Plenty of seating on the patio, with outdoor outlets for comps. Ironically, there's more outlets outside than there are inside. (Explain that to me, please.) Like any other coffeeshop, music floats in the air with the scent of coffee. This place played the strangest melange I've ever heard in a coffeeshop, from techno to Arabic music to Michael Jackson songs from the 80s that I'd never heard. Overall, no major complaints. I just wish I'd had the balls to ask the woman for decaf. Ugh, my stomach. I'm so old. Can't say I'd make the hike all the way back out to 17th just for Java House, but it was a pleasant experience. read more
