We visited the Chowder House previously, however, a long-story-short, we had to leave before getting to dine there. My dinner companion had eyes on the fried shrimp and I on the fish and chips so we were eager to go back for another try. Our server remembered us from our previous/failed visit. He was extremely nice, knowledgeable of the menu, and quite helpful as we contemplated our predetermined selections: fried shrimp and fish & chips! The restaurant was somewhat empty which made for a comfortable and quiet dining experience. Our beers were delivered cold and quickly. And our meal came out rather quickly as well. My fish was breaded nicely and had a good crisp to it. The fish tasted fresh and was flakey just as it should be. My companion's shrimp were excellent. They were huge, fresh, sweet, and juicy with a crisp breading. The shrimp dish is actually big enough to share. The fries were good but not the best on the island. Ordered off Grubhub. They listed "Rack of Lamb" and decided to treat myself for my birthday. On GH, they were listed as American, not seafood. Completely misleading, the order cost $46. I got a phone call an hour before delivery from GH who gave me to a manager to be told they don't carry Rack of Lamb. The MANAGER then started fighting with me about listing it on their menu like I didn't have a timestamped record of their restaurant claiming to serve it?? He hung up on me when I asked for my $46 back. Awful, awful service, and from a manager?? How do you list food that you don't carry? How do you as the MANAGER fight with a customer over your restaurant's mistake and act belligerent as all Hell doing it??? I love seafood, and when I'm feeling seafood, I'd go somewhere else for the sheer lack of incompetence and immaturity exemplified by this restaurant's m a n a g e r s. If they mess this up, if this is their conflict resolution for something so obviously and flagrantly on their end, what else do they do wrong? What guarantee is there they fix things when they make a mistake with your order? This would have been absolutely disastrous for a larger order for a party or a catering event, and the freaking manager dgaf'd. Stay away. read more

I have been going to this restaurant for over 20 years now and it has always been great. I had lunch there this afternoon and I got the baked stuffed shrimp. The chowder house contained a total of 1 chowder offerings which I opted not to try. Everything besides the chowder and salmon seemed to be baked and stuffed, I decided to go for the salmon on a cedar plank which comes accompanied by a baked potato and salad. While waiting for the food the arrive, which took about an hour despite a less than half capacity crowd, I was served some microwaved rolls and an edible house salad. When the salmon arrived with the baked potato and green beans I was disappointed, not just because I was famished and the food took forever to come, but because the salmon was frozen (although I was told it was fresh before I ordered) and despite it being a "baked dish" it tasted like it was boiled and had a complete lack of flavor. The baked potato could have doubled as a microwaved baseball, but at least the beans were edible. read more

The Chowder House is a small very quaint restaurant with a wide array of choices and very reasonable prices. My husband and I were attending a fantastic show in the upstairs room and decided to have dinner first. We informed our waitress that we were in a hurry due to showtime and the service was prompt. A basket of warm bread along with a a cheese spread and crackers were quickly provided and were very pleasing. I really enjoyed the gourmet salad I ordered - lots of cranberries, feta cheese, and nuts. My husband's swordfish was served with bernaise sauce on the side but it was so delicious that he did not need it. I love this place! The seafood chowder is out of sight and the seafood is all locally caught and very fresh! We walked in and were immediately greeted with a smile and water and a loverly table. When my mom wanted some iced tea they didn't have any but brewed her some right away. We had the stuffed haddock and grilled shark and a paninni. It was so good that we all split each one so we could have it all. I want to try more dishes here and would suggest that if anyone wants a peaceful and pleasurable lunch you. read more

Food wasn't very good and way overpriced. We paid $10 each for 1 mediocre crab cake appetizer. The baked scallops and lobster pie were both chewy and tough. The flavor was okay but there didn't seem to be much seasoning, sauces, etc. - just a ton of bread crumbs on top. Those dishes were right around $20 each, but just to indicate how unappetizing mine was (the scallops), I didn't even eat one entire scallop. My husband ordered the seafood chowder and baked stuffed shrimp. I ordered the clam chowder and Caesar salad. Both of the chowders were delicious and we would both order again. My only regret was I ordered the cup instead of the bowl. The butternut squash served with the baked shrimp was scrumptious and went great with the shrimp. The stuffed shrimp was perfect although the crab was not easily detectable. Our server was friendly although she did not refill my tea or water. She did refill my husband's coffee so not really a huge deal. My husband and I agree that we would definitely recommend this restaurant and eat here again if ever in the neighborhood again. I think we can all agree that we're only here for the 2 for $30 special. If you aren't in the know, you get an appetizer, 2 entrees, dessert, and a bottle of wine for $30. You can also upgrade your wine for an additional sum if you are inclined to do so. I suspect that the "upgrade" option is rarely used as those of us that are drawn to the Chowder House are deal-seekers and will not be tempted by dalliances such as wine upgrades. The atmosphere is definitely that of an older, more subdued nature, and the clientele reflect that. I'm pretty sure that you could add up the mine and my girlfriend's ages and we'd be about half as old as the youngest patron there. This is definitely not a drawback, as I have always seen older clientele as a sign of good value. When you see a group of seagulls on the open ocean, you know there are fish; when you see a group of elderly people in a restaurant, you know there is value. The Chowder House brings the value. All of the food was quite good and they actually cooked my steak rare, as I had requested and not medium-rare/medium like most places do. The wine served it's purpose and established a nice buzz-base to build upon. The server was attentive and friendly, and my water was always filled (I drink a LOT of water). I will most certainly be returning to the Chowder House for the great deal, the great waitstaff, and the delicious food. I recommend trying it out yourself. read more

"$29.99 dinner for TWO with a bottle of wine" - Monday thru Saturday. i drive by this place all the time and finally tried it out with my friend. We got there around 7 and there were a couple of tables being occupied. The dining room looked kind of fancy which was weird because the bar to the restaurant is pub-like - identity crisis? The bartender, hostess and waitress is one person. The waitress informed us they were out of haddock and lobster that night. My friend and I chose from the specials menu for the 29.99 deal. There were 5 entrees to choose from and each entree came with a side salad. I ordered an eggplant rollatini which is an eggplant parm served over lignuine. The eggplant had too much breading and the marinara sauce was too watery and it tasted funny. However, my friend liked her schrod entree. By about 8pm, the restaurant was completely emptied except for us, not even a person at the bar! read more

This is one of my destinations when I'm in the mood for some good seafood. They make some of the best baked stuffed scallops. Their entrees also come with a nice garden salad as one other reviewer stated. The waitresses and service there is excellent. They even show up with the dishes covered from the kitchen to keep the food hot. They serve a warm basket of bread and also have crackers with spread. What a difference a day makes... Two visits, two experiences The first night was so good, we went again two days later. This restaurant is a kind of throwback to an earlier era... real tablecloths and cloth napkins, and a perfectly set table. The bread and the corn bread were very good as was the salad. I ordered baked stuffed schrod with mashed potato and corn. The veggies were pretty good, but the schrod was COOKED PERFECTLY, as well as I've ever had it. Portions are large, prices are reasonable and the service was very good. Two nights later... the schrod was overcooked... and another in our party ordered it on my advice, and hers was also overcooked. Service was not nearly as good, in fact it was just fair. read more

We've been here before and it was great. Tonight however we had a 7 pm reservation for 6 and arrived 10 min early to have a drink at bar. Waited 15 min (no drinks) and then hostess asked if we'd like to go to table and get drink- we said yes. It was 15 minutes before waitress (the bartender also) arrived. Took drink order and it arrived 20 minutes later. The place was not that busy. It was disastrous for the rest of night. Had to ask for water a couple of times and cheese and crackers several times. The salads arrived after our meals (she blamed kitchen) and only five meals arrived. The waitress put my husbands order in then ( she forgot but blamed the kitchen). She said it would be out in 4 minutes!! When we were almost done with our meals and still no hubby dinner( 15 minutes later) I asked other waitress on duty. She aplologized for the service we were having. She went to kitchen and my husband had meal in a couple of minutes. This was supposed to be a celebratory dinner and it was very stressful. Thank goodness for other waitress. She packed up our leftovers, ran our bill and we wished she had been our server. read more

Returned to the Chowder House to celebrate a friend's 50th Birthday .There were eleven of us there for dinner.We had a private room upstairs ,The waitress was so nice to us.Her name was Krista.She had been our waitress on previous visits and she is excellent.We always have a large party when we go to the Chowder House and we are never disappointed.I can't say enough about this restaurant.The food is always served piping hot and always cooked perfectly..All eleven entrees were served together, Krista is a very experienced waitress and is always calm and she certainly knows how to handle a large party Thank you Krista..We ordered everything from seafood to steaks .The chef even accommodated a couple of special orders because two friends couldn't decide between the steak or scallop dishes because they had both before and loved them.The chef allowed them to do a surf and turf substitution with scallops.They were very happy.Once again,everybody gobbled up the food and there wasn't one complaint.You can eat here in a relaxed manner.We never feel rushed.The Chowder House really caters to its guests.Excellent service and the food is always delicious.The meal includes crackers and dip for starters followed by fresh salad and piping hot rolls and the entrée with sides.Between us we have tried several dishes on the menu and were always pleased .Thats why we keep coming back.Thank you for another great night at The Chowder House. read more
