I patronized Burke's in the 1980s, as a college student living with my grandmother, who loved getting her fresh fish here. The quality was excellent then, and on something of a whim on a recent visit to Quincy, I stopped in for a fish and chips lunch. The quality is just as good as I remembered, and at a surprisingly reasonable price given the catapulting of prices industry-wide. I joked with the counter staff about the length between visits, and they joked about about not letting it go forty more years -- they might not be around that long! While I certainly won't be, well into my sixties, I sure hope Burke's will. read more

We came to Quincy looking for some Asian food. Then, searching through my own Yelp collection, I found out that I had bookmarked Burke's previously. With a craving for some seafood, we decided to pop in for a late lunch. The whole Burke's team was friendly and welcoming upon our arrival. We asked for recommendations and made some quick selections before the kitchen closes for the day. We opted for the shrimp lunch, oyster dinner, and a seafood chowder. The chowder came out first. The lady was so friendly, making sure we had enough spoons and cups of water. The chowder was thick and creamy with chunks of seafood. I am not usually fans of fried seafood. However, the fried shrimps and fried oysters here were so good that the batter didn't adulterate the freshness of the shrimps and oysters at all. Both were cooked to perfection without being dry. Burke's is my go-to fried seafood spot when I get a craving and can't make it to the Cape. It's half seafood market half cafe area with seating and dine-in service. The kitchen is only open until 3pm ET and they're closed Sundays. Everyone from the cashier, chefs and waitstaff are friendly and the fish is always fresh. The prices are very fair with a fried lunch platter between $14-$36.00 (depending on what you order) and dinner plates starting at around $19, which is a pretty great deal compared with many other things places in the Boston-ish area (Yankee in Seaport, Alive & Kicking in Cambridge). [[HIGHLIGHT]]The cafe seating is self seating and casual set up, there is waitstaff who comes to clear plates away and check in to make sure everything is alright.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] You order and pay upfront at the market but can leave a tip on the table. I like how they're consistent (fried food is not over fried / over cooked) and they added a couple grain bowl options to their menu too. I wish they were a bit closer instead of in Quincy, but then I'd be eating there all the time so better for self control. Today we ordered the shrimp lunch plate, clam chowder, lump crab cake (mostly crab, little filler/breadcrumbs), and Haddock fish and chips lunch plate. Burke's Seafood is an old staple in Quincy. It is divided into two buildings with the first part being the fish market and then the other being the dine-in area. The fish market has grab and go food (including Shrimp Scampi Pasta, Lobster Mac & Cheese, and Haddock Pie), a frozen selection, and a fresh seafood market where you can buy fresh fish or shellfish to cook at home. I ordered the Clam Chowder and Seafood Platter (Haddock, Sea Scallops, Whole Clams, Onion Rings, and Cole Slaw) to split with a friend. The food was good and was high quality, but more expensive and smaller portions when compared to similar restaurants such as Tony's Clam Box and Belle Isle Seafood. I've been here twice, and the fried haddock sandwich and clam belly roll were both good, up with the best I've had. The rolls are undersized for the generous pile of clams or hunk of haddock, and I didn't finish all the bread. I've had better clam bellies, juicier, up Essex-Ipswich way, but these are good, and closer to home for me. Good onion rings. Cole slaw servings are typically small, but fine. I tried lobster rolls and chowder from 3 places (brukes, boston sail loft ,and legal seafood) while in town and this was by far the best in both categories. The lobster roll had a warm perfectly toasted delicious slightly sweet bun with a lightly sauced FRESH flavorful lobster. The lobster here was by far the freshest and best tasting. It is about half the size of legal's roll but it is also about half the price and had much higher quality better cooked lobster. I thought the size was actually a perfect portion for the price. The seafood chowder is amazing, its not a super thick chowder, but still creamy yet brothy and brimming with delicious seafood favors. This was the only place I had to order a second bowl it was so delicious. I also tried the crabcake which was wonderful and almost all fresh sweet crab meat with little breading/binder. It's also worth mentioning that even with the extra crab cake I ordered here, the bill was still the lowest of the three resteaunts I tried. I'll 100% be back when in the state again. read more

We can here at 1am. They have two doors that can be used. One Is for fresh live seafood and one is for take out orders. We got the Ipswich Whole Clam dinner and Fisherman's Platter, then waited 10 minutes for it. The two items were Lightly Breaded , Crispy , and Tasted fresh. The scallops, clams , and haddock had so much favor. They came with crispy fries and coleslaw on the side. Coleslaw had a balance of textures. The sauce didn't over power the veggies. I have something shameful to admit: I'm coming on my third year of living in Boston and I had yet to have fried clams before eating at Burke's Seafood. I may not be the most experienced source, but I promise you I'm one of the most enthusiastic. This place definitely set a high standard. They're currently only doing take out right now. I didn't time it great so I called in the order while I was at World's End and while they said it would take 15 minutes, it took me 30 to get there. I full well was expecting some soggy seafood (which would have absolutely not been their fault). I got there around 1PM. They gave me a few cups of tartar sauce to go, and I headed to the beach to eat (about a 2 minute drive). The Food: Fried Whole Clam Dinner (comes with fried whole clams, fries, a wedge of lemon, and coleslaw): 5/5 -- these certainly aren't cheap (~$27) but they are absolutely delicious. Portion size was pretty good. I was full by the end of it without eating all of my fries. (Note: the photo is not accurate portion-wise; when I finally sat down I was a little too excited to eat.) To my complete surprise, they were perfectly crispy and not too chewy. They tasted completely fresh (expected of a place that is also a seafood market but always nice to see). The breading didn't have a lot of flavor, which was fine with me because the clams tasted great and extremely fresh. To my utter delight, there was not a single grain of sand in any of the clams (which I have heard is a problem when eating whole clams rather than clam strips). Fish and Chips (comes with fried haddock, fries, a wedge of lemon, and coleslaw): 4.5/5 -- My girlfriend doesn't like seafood, but loves fish and chips (which I don't particularly care for). Her opinion was that that the fish was cut into nice big chunks, had great flavor in the breading, and was a wonderful level of flaky while not falling off the fish. The fish itself was clearly fresh and she liked that they included a lemon (which they also did for the clams which I appreciated). The tartar sauce had a very strong tartar flavor, which she liked. She said that the combination of tartar sauce and fish was delightful. The fries were hand cut, which was a big bonus, but could've used a bit more salt and a bit more crispiness (although they were placed at the bottom of the fish so they may have gotten soggy from waiting for us to pick it up). At $14, it was a real bang for your buck. The real kicker: neither the fish nor the clams were oily. How this is possible when both were deep fried, I can't explain. But, they were both amazing and that's what matters. Miscellaneous note: I really liked the coleslaw. Just the right of mayo and vinegar and it really brightened up the meal. There's currently no seating at Burke's Seafood so I would definitely suggest getting takeout and heading to the beach. There was plenty of parking and it was easy to find a spot that wasn't too crowded. read more

First the chowder is wonderfully rich and creamy with lots of clams. I often get fresh fish to cook at home and sometimes I get the freshly grilled salmon which is glazed with a teriyaki sauce. You walk in to a seafood counter. Order at register and sit down. It is a bit pricey but totally worth it. The lady that brings your food out is very friendly. In town for a few days and wanted a lobster roll in an area where parking isn't a cluster. Street parking wasn't bad at lunch time on a Thursday. They weren't doing indoor dining when I went so I grabbed my meal to go & brought it to break rock brewery for a beer. I started munching on the onion rings on the short drive and OMG, hot, delicious, light and crispy. Amazing. The lobster roll was absolutely INSANE. It's hard to find a reasonably priced lobster roll around this area but I think Burke's has the best deal. For around $24, you get the roll and one side of your choice. I also added a clam chowder on the side and my total was roughly $28 altogether. Everything tasted pretty good to me but what stood out were the onion rings.
