The Cavailier was our side-trip to the UK after a day at the SFMOMA. It went better than we expected, this was elevated and subtle. The location is central and the decor richly celebrates British rustic public houses, with the bar seating feeling more cosmopolitan. The staff are friendly and enthusiastic about their food. They were a joy. We started off with the Deviled Eggs, deeply flavorful and a great way to dive in. The Duck Scotch Egg was beautiful done, complete with firm white and runny yolk. Ducky. The surprise star of the evening, the Mushroom Tart is earthy, so full of mushroom umami sitting atop flaky pastry. Perfectly executed!! The Fish and Chips were very good, the fish fish and the flavor deep. Very good. The Panna Cotta and Delice desserts made it clear that sweets aren't an afterthought. We've been to this restaurant several times before and always had a great time. However after the last visit we are not likely to return. Both my husband and I had horrible food poisoning after our dining experience. Granted we shared oysters and steak tartare, and like all restaurants they had the warning about eating raw or undercooked food and food borne pathogens. However when we emailed the restaurant about our experience, we received no reply. It's really more about how they did not handle the experience and less about the food. read more

We had a reservation for 6 pm before our show at the Golden Gate Theater. Got stuck on BART - messaged the restaurant and they said no problem. Got there and our table had accidentally been given away. The Maitre d quickly put a table together for us and without us asking they brought over complimentary apps. Between our group we had some Lemon Drops and bottles of wine. Very good. We had flank steak, salmon, Brussel sprouts, hamburger and fish and chips. Everything was delicious, but some of the dishes were pretty salty. We would definitely come back! Service was great and it's just a short walk to BART and the theater. Check it out. read more

I would give this place a 3.5 but honestly with the price points and flavoring, I had to bring it down. 1. The service was wonderful. The staff and waiters were really kind and patient. 2. The ambience was really cute but it's super dim inside. But that's just how it is with any "fancy" restaurant. 3. All the food was really expensive but was all kind of mediocre... there wasn't much layering of flavors and was either too salty, too bland, or just kind of uncomfortable to eat. However the best thing we got on the menu was the butternut squash blossoms which were fried nicely and the flavor combination of the cheese and sweetness of the blossom went well together. One item I 100% do not recommend is the ahi tuna carpaccio. It had a really weird and strong alcohol like taste at the beginning and then dwindled down to an awkward fishy taste. Everything else is also in really small portions. Price to size to flavor ratio is off. Pick somewhere else if you want to eat better "fancy" food. read more

Hubby and I went during pride weekend, and let me say, first great thing about this place is the staff! Huge shoutout to our waitress! Another lady who I think was an assistant manager of some sort stopped by just to say hi and see if we were enjoying everything, which was so lovely. Pretty sure we saw the GM as well, just being very attentive to his staff and incoming guests. Honestly lovely to see. The table next to us got seated and was clearly drunk and had puke on their pride shirts. They were extremely disrespectful (and I think were asked to leave eventually), but the staff handled it beautifully!! We had truffle fries, brussel sprout chips, and truffle gnocchi, which were all top notch. I had the Pimm's cup, and hubby had a mocktail, both excellent. The Marlowe burgers were very good too. I think my favorite part was the peanut butter sundae...one of my favorite desserts I've had in a long time. We keep talking about how we would go stay in the city again just for that sundae! We had dinner here in September prior to attending a show at the Orpheum. The highlights of the meal included: 1) the Chicken Nuggets, 2) The Marlowe Burger, 3) the Fresh Oysters, and 4) the Marlowe fries. If you think of this place as elevated pub food, you are hitting it on the head. The only dish that did not hit was the Beef Tartare. The Baked Alaska was a nice dessert to end the evening. We book this place each year since one of our client stakeholder loves this place . The ambience is unique and has good drinks . However , they have a waiter who is snarky to you in front of your clients for an event you booked and are paying . All this because I asked Brian to take my client's order . I asked for another waiter , the manager brought someone to oversee but Brian was still our server . I never forget to write about how good Cavalier was, their humble staff members and hostess, the holiday decor, and of course, the presentation and quality of the food prepared for me. Everyone loves Cavalier because the people I saw were here to dine on holiday occasions. This fine dining area looked like it was chosen the most when it comes to better tastier quality eats. Aside from the minty N/A drink, salads are a must-have for my appetizer. I liked how the Cavalier Salad was tossed perfectly; every greens and dressing in harmony. No need for a miso glaze as a more flavorful alternative. Cold greens complete; on to the warm greens! If I remember correctly: green beans, micro greens, cauliflower, squash, and the Tempura Shiitake Mushroom sitting on a big plate of coconut curry. I was surprised how any chef had made the coconut curry mild. It's a pleasant taste to have that even a non adventurous will have this veggie dish. The amount of breading of the Tempura was absolutely filling and I hardly have enough room for any dessert. Best place to dine for the holidays; however, the menu option had changed since I first came here. Maybe one day, I'll be lucky enough to come across the Skuna Bay Salmon dish followed by kombucha. I think the Marlowe burger's still got it, though today I could've passed on the bacon. Fries are okay, I like that the plate comes with aioli so that I don't have to ask for it in lieu of ketchup. I was disappointed with dessert - I saw some pics of a sticky toffee pudding but they don't make that anymore. It's been replaced with a sticky toffee *bread* pudding. It was good here though, unlike the one from monk's kettle that they really shouldn't serve. It was spacious and there was plenty of seating without a reservation. Came on a Wednesday night. Service was actually kind of amazing. There were like 3-4 staff helping us right when we sat down. We were there for a second dinner and they split the dish for us without us asking other than saying we'd share. I was impressed. From the warm welcome to the last sip, Caliber exceeded every expectation. Aisha was the best hostess, she was very attentive and had the best vibe. The oysters arrived chilled and briny-sweet, and our steak came out with a perfect sear, tender inside, and seasoned just right. After 20 years of living in San Francisco, I can confidently say that Lorenzo and Carlos are among the best bartenders I've ever encountered. After doing a little bit of research on Yelp we decided to give this spot a try because of its location within the city. As you can probably tell by my 3 stars we weren't very impressed with it. It's a beautiful restaurant but the vibe inside is a little weird and off putting for those looking for a quite fine dining experience. When we initially arrived the restaurant was quite but soon after the bar started filling up with a ton of people who were clearly friends of the host. These individuals were obnoxiously loud and being friends of the host were being allowed to be. We didn't complain because it just wouldn't have been worth it but we were annoyed along with several others near by. The meal itself was was ok at best. For appetizers we ordered onion rings, Brussels sprout chips, and oysters. The onions rings were the best of the three but we had to eat them dry as the "hot and boozy cocktail sauce" sucked!!!! We asked for ranch or ketchup but no sauce ever came. Entrees were good but truthfully not worth the price we paid. Half Chicken and Steak Frites both were good and perfectly cooked. Desserts were again a disappointment as both the Tcho Chocolate Delice and Sticky Toffee Bread Pudding we didn't finish and I wouldn't order again. I wanted to love this place but alas, no. The menu has a number of interesting options but is it an entree? An app? Hard to tell either by layout or by price. My husband's scallops were delicious but they were entree-priced and barely appetizer sized. My gnocchi arrived cold and needed to be reheated. It had lovely flavor but was barely 4 oz and had a gloopiness to it that was hard to overlook. Our salads were lovely and our daughter's burger was excellent. But is the best you can do a burger? We might have felt better about the food if we had felt better about the service. We waited for an unusually long time for water when we sat and didn't receive a hello from our server until we'd been seated 15 minutes (not exaggerating). Over the course of the meal, our server paraded the room multiple times without taking our order, picking up our plates, or asking about our meal. At this price point, service should be significantly more attentive and precise (spilling water during refills and not even saying 'sorry' or 'excuse me.') All to say, we left hungry and felt we could have made a better choice than dinner at the Cavalier. read more

Really unimpressed by their menu. I attended a private function and the menu was just weird. There were 3 entree options offered, one was fried mushrooms, the other two were fish meals. There in lies the problem I don't eat mushrooms or seafood. I suppose I could have asked for another option but didn't want to be "that guy". Not sure who picked the menu, maybe it was the restaurant, maybe it was the event organizer, either way, don't know how there wasn't at least one beef or chicken option to choose from. Located next to Hotel Zetta, this lavishly decorated restaurant is the place to be. The owners definitely know hospitality and did a fabulous job with this swanky restaurant. I've heard of their Marlowe location and Park Tavern, and countless projects in SF. None of their restaurants disappoint because hospitality is the name of their game. I came here with SO for Christmas Day Prix Fixe menu. We had an early reservation and sat down at the right side of the restaurant, near the library. We ordered: Amuse bouche - Quail egg Dijonnaise with celery salt and crispy shallots. The Dijonnaise was not too mayonnaise-y and crispy shallots added a nice crunch. Fava Bean Hummus with toasted garlic and chili vinaigrette: This had a nice kick and hummus was flavorful with the toasted garlic vinaigrette. It came with warm sliced baguette slices. Wild Mushroom and ricotta tart with peas and herb salad: I could not believe my eyes at how small this tart was. It was the size of a pack of Juciy Fruit gum (!!!). It was on flaky layers of phyllo which was nice, but this was gone in 1 bite. SO ordered salmon crudo with cucumber, lime and chili oil and capers which was much better than the pack of gum sized tart I ate. Grilled Ribeye Steak with chimichurri and smoked butter: The steak was a good size and came with two slices. I took one bite and it was rare and not medium (don't judge) like I asked. I sent it back and focused on the side dishes whilst it was being grilled some more. Potato Gratin with gruyere cheese and chives: This was really good, the thinly sliced potatoes were great with the gruyere cheese. Haricot Vert with garlic, lemon and herbs: Crunchy French green beans were nice and lemony. Roasted Brown Butter Brussels Sprouts: These were slightly crispy and I enjoyed the brown butter richness of the Brussels Sprouts. My Ribeye Steak finally appeared and I was able to cut into it and take a bite. This time around it was cooked perfectly and I enjoyed it with the chimichurri sauce. I was so hungry I forgot to take a picture! Sticky Toffee Bread Pudding with medjool dates and coffee ice cream: I liked this but I would have loved it if it wasn't so dry. The restaurant was starting to fill up and get busy, I'm glad I came early - my hot water was filled frequently which I really appreciated as I was getting chilly. I have a list a restaurants in the city that I love. Cavalier was on that list until tonight. They've completely changed their format. Instead of getting a normal meal at a normal price, you get a tiny incy wincy portion. My daughter got the salmon. Three ounces/bites, at best. I got the steak. No more normal ribeye. Instead, shaved pieces of skirt steak in a salad. Ridiculous. I got the twice baked potato. It was half a potato (and tasted like something you might get at Jack in the Box). Came here for nye dinner! Great vibes and service, food was delish and the drinks were great as well!- their cocktails were super delicious! The Marlowe burger was juicy, tender and had horseradish mayo sauce that added a sharp, unique balance of flavor to the super greasy and cheesy burger. Would definitely get this burger again!! Have been dreaming about it haha The white lady had orange foam that was like whipped cream, the drinks weren't too sweet and just strong enough. Overall, such a pleasant dinner and night!
