We were craving oysters and found this place online, it was super close to our hotel, and the $1 oysters caught our attention right away! And WOW, they did not disappoint! The oysters were so fresh, delicious, and a really good size. Arturo told us they had just come in that day, and you could definitely taste how fresh they were! Arturo was also AMAZING, so friendly and welcoming, and he came by a couple of times to make sure we were enjoying everything. The restaurant was super clean, had a great atmosphere, and we just had such a good experience overall. We'll definitely be coming back, and I would 100% recommend this place to friends. Ambiance: Think dive bar but not quite dive bar enough. We had arrived at 6 PM on a Saturday and scored one of the three well-worn downstairs booths. Cardboard boxes stacked in a corner. Fairy lights over the walls - but only one set actually working. Aside from the three booths, all other inside tables are backless puffy bar stools. Had we not scored a booth, we would have walked out. Let's talk food. The $1 oysters were good (and why I picked this place.) Served on ice with an adequate mignonette sauce. No proper oyster utensils (a normal spoon instead) but for a dollar each? I can make do. One dish was stellar - the clam stew. No notes, delicious. Would have again and again. New York strip was adequately cooked but lacked seasoning. The sides: fries could have done with a few more minutes; the broccolini was overcooked and rather sad. The absolute failures - soggy "roasted" brussel sprouts and the $14 garlic bread. The latter: imagine a large hot dog bun covered -- covered -- with poorly cooked garlic. It was inedible. Would I go back? Only for the cheap oysters and clam chowder. So if I am in an oyster mood - sure. Otherwise, an expensive mediocre experience. read more

Went with a large party (10+) and were able to make a last minute reservation, which was great. Pretty casual and good for an easy, simple dinner. Food was surprisingly solid! Sweet potato fries can do no wrong, and the burrata caprese dish was also just a classic. The filet mignon we got was an odd piece, honestly a bit tough, but the lamp chops were pretty solid! Not a bad spot at all. I would say the entrees are reasonably priced, my burger was 17$ and very large, and came with a side of fries. I enjoyed the appetisers we got as well, especially the calamari. I'm not usually a fan of marinara but something about this tasted great. Service was excellent, we had a large party and still felt attended to and our food came out surprising quick. The only reason I am not giving this 5 stars is some of the entrees seemed to be hit or miss. I loved the burger, but those who ordered the rigatoni said it was nothing to write home about, same goes for the salad. The fish and chicken sandwiches looked great, I would stick to sandwiches or burgers. They also have a 1$ oyster happy hour which I missed but seems like a great deal. Came in right when they opened so it was pretty quiet. Service was good. We decided to share an entree as we weren't super hungry. Went with the steak that came with sides of broccolini and sweet potato fries. Steak was cooked perfectly!! The food here was pretty good, albeit on the heavier side, more akin to bar food than a nicer sit-down meal. Our table shared the gnocchi, mussels, garlic bread, and some cocktails which were overall very flavorful and well portioned. The ambiance was a little weird - we were seated upstairs which was tackily decorated in multicolored wall-draped string lights. It very much felt like a low-end corporate team building event venue than a proper restaurant. The music choice was also off (EDM covers of pop songs that charted 10 years ago - think Ed Sheeran, the Weeknd, and Clean Bandit on repeat) although we noticed the downstairs speakers were playing something different so maybe this was a technical one-off. I suspect being seated upstairs also contributed to the slower service. We had to ask for more water, dessert menus, and the bill, and other tables around us did the same. I would come back here to try their other food and drink offerings but for first-timers would advise to set your expectations lower than what the pictures and menu online telegraph. read more

Total disappointment. We came here in NYE. We made a reservation with a 24 hour credit card cancellation fee, which would've been totally fine if it were actually a cool place, but it was so very not. There was no one there, maybe two people downstairs and two people upstairs. We had a group of 7 and reserved bar seating. The bar was completely empty, but they still brought us upstairs to a table next to a couple, who were the only people up there. It was super awkward because there was no music. It was completely silent and empty. It almost felt haunted or like we were being punked. Ok whatever. We asked to move so they moved us to a high top downstairs. Don't forget that there was basically no one there it was a little early, 6:30 PM, but it's not like it was 2pm. OK, whatever, let's make the best of it. We were excited about the $1 Oysters, it was basically why we went there. They had the sign out, we were ready to go. No oysters. It's not like they could've run out when there was no one there, and if they didn't want to serve the dollar oysters on New Year's Eve because it was "so crowded," I get it... But bring the sign inside. We all had a drink and shared some sweet potato fries, and garlic fries. I only tried the sweet potato fries, and they were pretty darn good, and I heard that the garlic fries were good too. I don't even remember the drink, so it clearly didn't stand out. I'm not sure why I gave it three stars. Now that I'm reading all this if it's more like a two star, but I like to give them the benefit of the doubt that they were having a really, really, really bad day. Standouts: the fries. read more

It was easy to make a reservation through OpenTable in advance. They let us choose where to sit when we arrived on a Friday evening. The place had a welcoming environment, with bar seating as well as indoor and outdoor dining tables available. Service was great, the staff was friendly and professional and didn't neglect us even though we were the only ones sitting outside. It took about 15-20 minutes for our food to be ready. Got the crispy fried chicken with roasted potatoes and jalapeno coleslaw, and the king salmon plate with a delectable lobster cream sauce, mashed potatoes and grilled asparagus on the side. The asparagus was a bit tough, but the rest of the salmon dish was pretty good. The crispy fried chicken was okay, a bit on the dry side though I appreciated that the fried batter/skin wasn't oily nor too heavy. I enjoyed the roasted potatoes for sure, slightly browned on the outside, just a nice texture and taste. The fried chicken dish also came with a side of ranch which I took advantage of to add flavor to my items. I'd return to try something else, maybe for a special occasion or when we have a reason to splurge, as I'm pretty sure the best items on the menu are the priciest. read more

We've had several events here and Blue Light, which have the same owner. Honestly terrible management. We get both verbal and text confirmation and each time they don't follow through with what was promised. From food to even the event space. The barbacks were nice but the head bartender was an ass the whole night and didn't want to even listen when we tried coming to a compromise. I don't usually write reviews but this was the last straw. Won't be coming back and telling others to avoid these 2 businesses. read more

I genuinely hate this place and its sister business Blue Light. The owner and the employees are pathological liars. We've had 4 events at these businesses (idk why I keep coming back) and every single time they lie. they promise us free appetizers and they close the kitchen upon arrival. They promise us the upstairs section and upon arrival they say it's not available. During our events they move us outside without any notice. On everything DO NOT COME HERE OR BLUE LIGHT. We had lunch on the patio and was pretty impressed. We both wanted $1 oysters but when we arrived they are not on the menu. You have to order an entree to be eligible for the oysters. We had the fish sandwich and mine came with a filet of fish so big it curled over and under the bun! The fries were average but those fresh oysters made up for it! Highly recommend. read more

Fallout from the pandemic and its aftermath wrought the demise of several Belden Place restaurants but a handful survived. Toy Soldier is one and - based on a recent weeknight visit - they're doing everything they should to remain open. By this I mean: * $1 oysters Monday - Friday from 4 - 6pm; * Some of the best Garlic Parmesan Fries ($12) ever; and * Bottles of red, white, and rose wines priced as low as $28 Need more of a reason to go? Even when I worked nearby I was never enamored of the alley that comprises Belden Place. I'm still not; I like the indoor space more. Toy Soldier's interior is simple and small, and I enjoyed what they had to offer from a seat at the bar.* There I was able to watch the US Open (2 televisions) while enjoying wine, those fries, and Roasted Brussels Sprouts (with red onion and brown butter, $12, also delicious). Had I known of the oyster happy hour deal I'd have been enjoying those as well. Toy Soldier was the perfect place to while away a couple of hours and I was surprised that workers in the area weren't flocking here for the deals. I mean: were I still working it might've been the sole reason to stop working from home. Sadly, the iconic Honey Bear mural that Toy Soldier's owners commissioned (from the artist Fnnch) were vandalized and subsequently removed, but the fact that they existed at all says good things about this place. Came here with a party of 12 after work. Location is nice and central within downtown, and there were plenty of groups eating indoors and outdoors. Seems like a pretty popular spot for post-work groups. Service was fine, nothing above and beyond, but not poor by any means for a large group Biggest issue is the quality of food for the price. We had appetizers for the table. The brussels sprouts were a bit small but overall the calamari and sprouts were good. I ordered the cast iron sea bass. It was $42 for the dish during dinner hours. I liked the mushrooms and there werent any issues with the dish, but the value just wasn't there. Factoring price and the quality of the food makes coming back a tough choice. Someone else in the party got fried chicken and even that was $34 read more

Don't really understand Toy Soldier's Google rating. Walked into a practically empty restaurant with a group of 8, we ordered 4 different dishes (few clam chowders, NY strip steak, and the fried chicken, and the grilled sprouts on the side) - none of them were very edible. The chicken was drenched in oil and flavorless, the steak was lukewarm and overcooked. Also took extremely long for the food to arrive, no one was hungry anymore. The staff was reasonably friendly, although they offered to take some items off the receipt which they ended up NOT doing upon payment. Beware. read more

I booked this spot for a birthday party with around 50-60 people, and it turned out to be such a great choice. The space itself is awesome: really good energy, plenty of room, and all of our guests kept commenting on how much they liked it. Communication in the whole process leading up to the event was great. We were in touch with John, who was so friendly and patient (I had so much pre-party anxiety - I never organize things like this:) During the party, Arthuro and our rockstar bartender Gabriel were fantastic: super friendly, attentive, and just all around great guys. I was on the fence about writing a post, but I came here with a large group in late July for a friends birthday celebration, and I'm still a little annoyed about it. The ambiance was bleh, it had like this hole in the wall dive bar type feel which is fine that really doesn't bother me. It didn't really fit the menu pricing however. For those prices, I would expect something a bit nicer and cleaner. We ordered drinks for everyone, and shareables like oysters, calamari, and fries. The server was attentive, but was a bit pushy about us ordering entrees, so I feel some of us felt pressured to. We all have mid meals every now and then, but where my gripe comes from is they have no business charging the prices they do for their entrees. An average of about $50 for that is a rip off, I would expect something with much more effort. I ordered the lamb chop, it was super mid, skimpy, and barely had meat on it. I sampled my friends gnocchi plate and it was just sloppy and soggy. I've honestly had better at the Cheesecake Factory. I didn't look at the bill, but I think it ended being about $600+ (before tip) for about 8 of us? And some of us shared entrees. I'm sorry, but to me it just doesn't add up for what we got, and I'm tired of restaurants who charge whatever they heck they want, without the quality to back it up. read more

We were seated in the outdoor tent area. Not horrible, but definitely chilly. The tables were all on a decline, so water bottles and plates weren't stable and spills happened. Reservation was at 7pm. It was 745 before our first round of drinks arrived, 815 for appetizers. Dinner came just after 9 (everyone was SO hungry at this point)- for me, it was undercooked, lacking some of the ingredients for the dish, and overall cold and not good at all. Went with a group of 25 people. The food took an extraordinarly long amount of time to come out. We arrived at 6 PM and it took 2 hours for our food to come out. Some people even left early because the food was taking so long to come out. On top of that, all the steak dishes were extremely overcooked and lacked seasoning. The chicken even was rubbery. The ravioli sauce was flavorless and was separating, the gnocchi sauce tasted like jarred sauce. The drinks were average and no one was in the mood for dessert as we had already been there for such a long time. They also ran out of oysters. Overall would not recommend at all for large groups and I would avoid getting any of the meat dishes. $55 for an overcooked piece of steak is not worth it at all. read more
