Came to grab some drinks after work on a Tuesday, and High Horse was pretty packed. We were lucky enough to snag the last high top table, and we watched other people who came slightly later have to stand and/or monitor the bar for people leaving. The interior is actually pretty clean and comfortable. High Horse has some larger tables at the front with couch-style seating, high tops towards the back, and bar seating. Our table was clean, and the stools were decently comfy. Service was friendly and attentive despite how busy they were. We ordered a few rounds of cocktails, and they were all decent (but not amazingly tasty). One negative is that there's only 1 restroom for the bar, and we watched as a huge line formed as the night went on.

Strolling along Jackson square during the lunch hour. Found this cozy chic bar across the street from the Transamerica Pyramid. The area had lots of gold rush history and architectural buildings. Ordered a draft beer and pesto chicken sandwich, which was quite delicious. Had a chance to catch some golf on their TV. Wished the screen was bigger. All in all, the high horse was a good place to have a quick lunch to start the year of the horse.

This cute little bar was just a block or so from the Hilton and had a clean nice atmosphere. The drinks were creative and food was good. Service was good early on but once it got crowded we needed to order at the bar. They have a downstairs room that can be reserved for groups.

Came here on a Friday evening around 9:00 PM and there were plenty of people lounging at tables and at the bar. It has a very classy yet casual ambiance with its clean and brightly lit interior and effective decor. It wasn't too rowdy of a place, so you could still have a conversation if you were close to someone. We managed to get two stools at the end of the bar, and the bartenders were very friendly and happy to give recommendations. I got the Pegasus cocktail, which I liked - the aromatic rosemary helped balance the sourness of the grapefruit and the warmth of the tequila. I liked this place a lot, would definitely come back!

We needed to kill 20 minutes before our reservation next door at Kusakabe, so ran in on a Thursday night at 7:40 for a drink. We were not disappointed. Grabbed 3 quick seats at the bar, looked at the wonderful cocktail (and other spirits) menu, and chose. Fortunately there was no wait for the bartender to begin making them. Hubby had the High Horse - a bourbon drink with much more. Daughter (celebrating 25th birthday) had the Pony Espresso...vodka, coffee liquor, cold brew espresso, simple syrup, and I had the Green Unicorn...rum, Velvet Falernum (go ahead and google that...I had to), pineapple juice, lime juice and mint bitters. We ALL LOVED our drinks. Drinks, service, atmosphere were all stellar. Hope to be back soon.

Staying nearby so decided to pop in for a late dinner last night. We sat down and it took a while to get acknowledged, we were finally given menus but never got told to order at the bar so it took us seeing another party order there first before realizing. That's the reason for 4 stars. But other than that we really enjoyed the food here! The chicken pesto sandwich was very flavorful and the roasted ciabatta bread was the star. I ordered the baby kale salad with salmon and the jicama slaw and toasted pepitas really did it for me. We didn't get drinks this time but they had a good selection of craft cocktails, canned drinks, etc. Cozy aesthetic and moody lighting inside. Would come again!

Can't recommend High Horse enough! They accommodated a big party for us and we were able to have an intimate space downstairs with our own bar. It felt like a one man show sometimes, the bartender was also the server and waiter, which we saw him running around. Nonetheless the service was fast and efficient and appreciated them for settling us so quickly. The small bites were really good! The ahi tuna and taro chips, potato skins, and Brussels sprouts were a table favorite. I got a white wine, and I was surprised how filled my glass was, it was a great surprise! Overall really recommend for a quick happy hour or get together. Their service is amazing and we felt really well accommodated. Thank you to the High Horse team!

Wonderful Bar and great service. During this visit, I wasn't able to try some of the food offerings, but from what I saw, a lot of the other patrons were enjoying the food - looked appealing and appetizing. This was intended to be a brief stop before dinner. The drinks are hand crafted and made with love, and they also have some background music playing - still able to have a conversation with your friends. A great location, friendly staff, and they left an impression. Will definitely return to try another cocktail and perhaps food next time around.

Nobody is getting off their high horse when enjoying a libation at High Horse. Located in the heart of San Francisco's Financial District in the Jackson Square neighborhood, directly across the street from the Transamerica Pyramid, High Horse is one part tavern, one part restaurant, and all class thanks to its restoration, in which the building in which High Horse resides has lived a number of lives before they moved in and set up. Originally a mercantile in the mid 1800's, the building was once served as a whiskey business, interior design firm, and then many a bar and restaurant most notably Aventine. As they say if these walls could talk, as this location survived landfill, seawall creation, earthquakes, fires, and gentrification to make the neighborhood one of the more stylish areas of the city. As they say, if these walls could talk, as the owners of High Horse chose to open a couple of years ago, in what was arguably one of the most challenging times for any restaurant to open in the city. As a group of friends and I were in the neighborhood one weekday afternoon, we looked for an inviting place for a quick drink and maybe to enjoy a shareable meal. High Horse, with its inviting parklet built outside their exterior and plenty of additional seating inside with a huge bar and plenty of high top tables to sit at, it was calling our name. The one thing we did notice was that upon entry, one bartender was doing it all in front of the house, from taking orders, to creating cocktails to cleaning up, he was the only one seemingly working, which was truly impressive. The drink menu at High Horse is separated into categories including Thoroughbreds and Draft Horses, which are their cocktails sold at two different price points; The Cart Before the Horse, which are shot and beer combos; Beer and Wine. The food menu at High Horse is separated into categories including Small Bites, Sandwiches, Pizzas, and Salads. For my drink I ordered their Pegasus cocktail which was made with tequila, salted rosemary syrup, and grapefruit juice, while my dining mates ordered a glass of the 2022 Whispering Angel Rosé sourced from Provence in Southern France and the Fort Point "Super Dry" Cider sourced from right here in San Francisco. To pair with our meal, we split the Fontina Pizza, which was topped with Pancetta and Broccoli Rabe, which was larger than expected and enough for three slices a person and all of them hearty. Our drinks would come first, and my cocktail was a smooth fruit forward delight, then our pizza came out, and although the dough was not the softest, which gave me the impression the pizza may have been pre-baked and served but believe it or not, it actually tasted pretty good. Our total bill was about 23 dollars a person, which in this day and age was rather reasonable. We enjoyed ourselves so much that we would return after work a few weeks later, and this time I ordered the Green Unicorn cocktail, which had um, Velvet Falernum, pineapple juice, lime juice and mint bitters, and then we split their Prosciutto Pizza with pesto, smoked mozzarella and topped with a farm egg, in addition to a side of French Fries. My cocktail was a uniquely crafted green colored delight served in a cuvee glass, and actually paired really well with the savory dishes of pizza and fries. This pizza was much better than the first one we ordered and at two dollars more, I would order this one again upon a return visit. Once again, our total bill when shared came to about twenty dollars a person. High Horse is something this neighborhood needs, as every time I walk by the place is filled with customers both inside and outside, which no doubt entices people passing by to come in for a quick drink and bite to eat. Open for lunch and dinner hours on weekdays and only dinner hours on Saturday, the people running High Horse know exactly what they are doing by bringing a little class and affordability to a neighborhood that could always use a little bit of both.

While we were outside, we made friendly conversation with a bartender. I overheard another bartender come out for a cigarette and call him by name, so I jokingly used his name while asking if we could come in. At that point, the bartender became extremely aggressive, got in my face, and said, "Say his name one more f*cking time," repeatedly. I was genuinely confused and asked what she meant. Shortly after, a friend who was already inside came out simply to check on us and see why we were still outside. The bartender then told her to "get the f*ck out of my face" and instructed staff not to let her or us in, even though my friend hadn't done anything wrong. It was so confusing and extremely inappropriate. The behavior was unnecessarily hostile and disrespectful. This bar does not treat its customers with basic courtesy, and that bartender showed zero professionalism or customer service skills.

I first walked through its…read moredoors in the late 1990s after moving to San Francisco, but the bar itself dates back to 1933, opening right as Prohibition was ending. It was founded by Anton "Tony" Nikitovich and quickly became a gathering place for the neighborhood's Italian and Croatian communities, where people came to swap stories, argue politics, and enjoy a stiff drink after a long day. And honestly, that tradition carried on well into the years when many of us became regulars. I hadn't been back for a few years until recently, when I decided to stop in again. The bar wasn't overly busy, but a handful of neighborhood folks were sitting at the counter, trading stories over their drinks. It felt instantly familiar. Not much has changed since the early 2000s when I used to come here regularly, and that's exactly what makes Tony Nik's special. Step inside, and it still feels like a mid-century film set: tufted leather seating, a long wooden bar that's seen nearly a century of San Francisco history, and that iconic neon sign glowing outside. While much of the city has reinvented itself again and again, Tony Nik's somehow held onto its soul. It's a grown-up bar without being stuffy, no loud club music, no trendy gimmicks, just well-made cocktails, a classic jukebox, and an atmosphere that feels earned rather than manufactured. The bar stayed in the Nikitovich family for decades, and the current owners were wise enough to preserve both the name and the vintage character Tony originally created. It's one of those rare places that reminds you what North Beach used to be, and, thankfully, still is.
