Located near Yerba Buena, across from the (currently closed) Contemporary Jewish Museum and steps from the gardens, this spot is an easy weekday or weekend win. The interior is warm and lively; Tropisueno's extensive menu makes it just as suitable for a casual lunch as it is for cocktails after work.

My first experience here was great, which is what made the second visit a little surprising. We came for dinner the first time and had an excellent meal. The carne asada was really well done, the margaritas were great, and the overall experience left us wanting to return. We raved about our experience and eagerly looked forward to returning. When we returned mid afternoon, the setup was completely different. The restaurant was operating more like a fast casual taco bar, where you order at the counter as they make the food in front of you. A large portion of the seating was closed off, so you order first and then look for a place to sit if one is available. Drinks are handled separately, meaning you have to go to the bar and open a second tab for cocktails, which felt disjointed. It is helpful to know this going in. At night it functions as a full service restaurant, and that is when I would recommend coming. I would absolutely return for dinner, but I would skip the daytime taco bar setup.

Tropisueño in San Francisco serves up some of the best tacos you'll find--loaded with cilantro, cebolla, and your choice of red or green salsa. My daughter ordered the chorizo tacos, while I went with one al pastor and one carnitas, and all were excellent. It's the rare Mexican spot in SF that truly captures the vibe and flavors of a SoCal Mexican restaurant. There's a large indoor dining room with plenty of tables and booths, plus outdoor seating, though the bar could be bigger. You order at the counter, grab a number, and wait for your food. The staff is warm, kind, and helpful--especially appreciated given the large, slightly intimidating menu. A great downtown stop for solid Mexican food.

Place was ok, not the most authentic I would say (+) we were looking for place to eat last min and the city was super busy due to a conference that was happening that week. We messed up our booking and reserved for the wrong day. The waiter was super cool about it , and got us seated anyways (+) food was served really fast (+) had a large variety of options (+) I ordered chicken, steak, and lamb tacos , they were all good expect lamb was a little gamy (-) nachos were only served during lunch hours? (-) tacos were not served with lime? (-) tacos didn't come with green or red sauce? Maybe I'm from the east coast and tacos are served a little differently here and it's a cultural thing? Overall everything was great!

I was looking for a place for lunch near SFMoMA and found Tropisueno on Yelp. During lunchtime, you order at the counter and take your number to a table, either indoors or outdoors. Everyone seemed to be munching on chips and salsa, which we passed on since it cost extra. We ordered a couple of burritos - chicken tinga ($12.95) for me and a shrimp burrito ($14.60) for my husband. The burritos came wrapped foil on a plate. The tinga was OK, more peppery than I expected, but at least it was a decent mixture of meat, beans, rice, cheese and pico de gallo. My husband's shrimp burrito had a lot of shrimp, but was somewhat sloppily made, as it was not wrapped tightly. Probably more like a 3.5, but since Yelp doesn't allow half stars, I'll bump it up to 4. Fine for a quick meal if you're in SoMa.

Very lively on a Monday evening. Got seated immediately and didn't have to wait. For appetizers, we got the chips and guac and the maiz dish. Really liked the corn and guac was fresh. The steak was tasty as well. A bit on the harder side though. The cheese enchilada and potato tacos were good too. Spot is filled with corporate employees on weekday evenings. Lots of seating and very loud. Friendly staff and good service.

I used to come for lunch when I was younger and had good memories of this place. I came with my parents for dinner one night when we were in the area. We didn't know the dinner menu was different and a lot more expensive. We got the pork 3 ways plate, chili verde plate, and tacos (birria, carne asada, and Baja fish). The best thing was the Baja fish taco, which was really crispy. The birria taco was way too wet. The carne asada needed some salsa and felt a bit dry and bland. The chili verde was a bit salty and dry too, we needed some salsa for everything. Overall it seemed like this is a better place for drinks at night rather than food and the total of our meal came out to almost $100 for Mexican food. We were a bit surprised and disappointed, especially remembering how good it was as a kid.

Used to come here when our old office was right down the street, but now we're across town. I got into town early for this visit and my hotel was across the street from Yerba Buena Gardens. I walked over my first night in town hoping to get some tacos, but they randomly closed early. They were a little rude about it, but I moved on and went for a pizza next door. A couple days later I stopped in for lunch and was reminded why I loved coming in here. The food is always great, service is quick, and prices are fairly reasonable for SF. I got a mix of tacos with rice, beans, and salad and it was way more than I needed... especially with the chips and salsa. It's great to see that after so many years that Tropisueno still holds up.

Good spot for happy hour with your team! My group of 3 came on a Thursday night around 7PM and got seated immediately. The restaurant is pretty big and has lots of larger tables to accommodate the FiDi team dinners. Inside is super loud and more crowded. Outside has some tables and lots of heat lamps which is perfect for the SF winds. We shared the Chips & Salsa ($4.25 - 3.5/5 - chips were very thin and nicely fried and salsa were average but the spicy orange one was the best tasting) and I got the Carne Asada Tacos ($20 - 3/5 very average taco and wished there was more flavor to this one). It would've been perfect if the spicy salsa was on top of the tacos but they charge for extra sauces. Overall, a very mid experience.

Ducked off in the heart of San Francisco near the Metreon and the Marriott Marquee Hotel is a cool Mexican kitchen. Giving it a 3.89 because of the self ordering aspect . I always feel bad (especially when their are others in line behind me) like I need to hurry up and rush when I need to order myself from the menu on the wall. But this does not take away from the fact that the food was really good. Off top... their chips are fantastic!!! Fresh, thin, and hot and oh sooo good. I'm a sucka for chips and salsa, especially the thin fresh hot ones. I ordered the shrimp quesadilla and it was so good. Each bite had a good amount of plump shrimp and just the right amount of cheese. This was perfect (in my opinion). I would definitely return.

Great for a post work bite. These restaurant has a good amount of indoor and outdoor seating. They also have a bar and take reservations. The food is reasonably priced and good (though I wouldn't say anything spectacular). My favorite dish was the chile con queso. They have a good size menu with lots of appetizers. My friends and I decided to share a bunch of apps. Drinks are also reasonably priced and they have a margarita flight. The service was ok, though sometimes delayed and requests forgotten, which makes sense because it did get pretty busy though not particularly loud. It is nicely decorated.

The food was tasty, delicious, and savory. The service was delightful, they serve it to your table. Ambiance is spacious, chill, and rustic. All in all good vibes .

Food was fantastic. The mole chicken was amazing, with a perfect mole flavor. I asked for 2 beans and no rice, the pinto beans were very meh (borracho would be far better), but the black beans were also perfect so it worked out. The queso was less tex mex and more Mexican but still quite good. Friend got enchiladas which also looked great. Ambiance was great. Only two downsides was service was quite slow, and they are quite skimpy on tortillas.

    Too oily and stale.

We ordered shishito peppers and mushroom bahn mi sliders. The mushroom bahn mi sliders were amazing - the quality fillings and taste of the soft bun - I was unexpectedly hit with a bite of spice from maybe jalapeño seeds left but didn't sour my experience. The shishito peppers ended up being extremely spicy as well, those are usually just a few spicy and not the majority. The roasted lemon and salt was a wonderful combo but just too spicy to eat. However, the server very kindly removed it from our bill without us asking. We order the crostini because we were still hungry and that was an absolute hit. Delicious med-soft crostini with luscious berries and sweet honey. I didn't care my hands got sticky as it was soooo good! Great experience, I would be weary if the peppers as I'm a bit spice-intolerant but everything else was spot-on.

They have security outside thar checks IDs & also manages the queue in case the bar gets too crowded. We had no issues getting in, but there were zero indoor seats available - both the bar & table seating. Thankfully, they have a really cozy & well-lit patio area. The waitress let us know that even the outdoor patio has table-side service, so we made ourselves comfortable on the outdoor bench & within seconds she had brought us waters & cocktail menus. Weather outside was really nice, so I'm glad we actually sat outside. Each cocktail is $20, which definitely is a little steep, but I think the creativity, quality, & prestige of being named a top 50 bar supports the price. Each part of the menu is organized by liquor ie whiskey, vodka, brandy, gin, etc. We tried 4 drinks total. I only took menu photos of the pages we ordered from but they have a lot more selections.
