Barrio, located in Ghirardelli Square, offers a delightful experience with its mouthwatering fresh salsa and friendly staff. I visited with a friend from Texas who was eager to try the food. While he thoroughly enjoyed his tacos, he found the prices a bit steep considering the portion size. What truly sets Barrio apart is its breathtaking view of Alcatraz. The panoramic vistas make it a must-visit spot. I personally savored my tacos, but the rice was quite ordinary. However, the birria tacos and hibiscus frescas were a refreshing and delicious treat. Mixed experience here. We asked if we could bring in food for our child while the adults ordered full meals, and were told no -- so we switched to takeout instead. Most of the restaurants here have "no outside food" signs which I guess is a big issue in San Francisco. But not letting in food for a child seems a little excessive. Our takeout order also came out incomplete. When we went back to get the missing items, the employee (skinny, smug white man) initially insisted we hadn't ordered them, and only fixed it after we showed our receipt. Instead of a rude, accusatory response.. some positive intent would've went a long way. The food was fine. The Al Pastor tacos were pretty good. Chips and salsa were great. The bean and cheese burro was 60% cheese 30% beans and 10% pico.. not great. The front-of-house experience left something to be desired and we won't be back nor would we recommend Barrio. read more

What's not to love about Barrio???? on a rainy or cold day sitting at the bar or a table with a view of the bay is almost all you can ask for and what's better is when it's a nice day and sitting on the patio with the same great view of the bay. Lots of storefronts in this complex which use to be the Ghiradelli Chocolate factory and is now one of the go to tourist hubs in San Francisco. In spite of the tourist there are still quite a few locals here putting up with them because it's a great spot for food and drinks and reasonably priced for where it is located. Once in a while the wait staff gets a little grabby wanting to collect plates with a little food left before we are done. After I'm ready to pounce on them with a fork they get the idea we are not done yet, just pausing for a minute. The Barrio Ceviche is excellent and the guac goes great with margaritas or in my case just tequila and a little lime. Next time in SF go there. read more

For this to be in a touristy area it was a pretty solid choice, the esquites were so good and we also shared a carne asada plate which we were able to upgrade to surf and turf and it was actually very good. The only thing would be the wait time for the door and the prices but given the area being busy and touristy it's okay! read more

I'm happy I gave Barrio another try as I had a much better experience on this visit. We had to wait a while for someone to notice us at the host station however eventually a server named Edward was kind enough to come over and help us get a table. The views are spectacular of San Francisco Bay All of us enjoyed the very freshly made guacamole with chips. I was pleased to see there was a vegan option on their menu thoroughly enjoyed. I loved the tacos being in blue corn tortillas. My friend thought the Birria tacos were delicious. The only downside was the condition of the restrooms. There is water all over the floor and no toilet paper. I tried to get the attention of who I believe was the manager however he was on the phone and just kept waving at me that he would help me soon. Our waitress was so kind and helpful, she allowed me to borrow her charger to charge my dying phone (we are tourists so it was much needed, as somehow BOTH my friend's and my phones were under 10%). She brought my phone to the back and returned it at the end of our meal! Plus she was also friendly and made small talk with us, even making lighthearted jokes. I wish I had gotten her name :( I had the chips and guacamole, as I wasn't too hungry. The chips were so fresh and crispy! The guac was just what I was craving! The entire menu, including fried foods, is gluten free, with the exception of the flour burrito wrap. For the place and view it's at the good spot, but if that's the reason for the prices of each food item idk if it's worth it. If you are craving Mexican food I think it's a decent spot, but definitely there are better places for food in general. The view is nice inside and service was friendly. On our first night, we decided to stop by here for mexican food. The waitress was not friendly at first, but later she seemed to open up when she found out I was also a hello kitty fan. Margs are in the $14-16 range and are great. The salsa is chunky and amazing, the chips and thick and crunchy ($7.50 for chips & salsa). We got the carne asada plate ($32) - it came with chimichurri, rice & beans, a generous portion of guacamole, and blue corn tortillas. The steak was perfectly cooked, the guacamole was chunky and fresh, and the tortillas were warm and soft. I loved chimichurri and the salsas they served with it as well. Was here for a company party during Halloween celebration and the restaurant really came out with their best theme displays. From fun and fitting decorations to a wall for memorial of love ones. This place oozes personality, culture and tenderness. The food were excellent. It was a buffet style in the back where you can make your own taco or burrito bowl. We were in town for Fleet Week and decided to give Barrio a try since it overlooks Aquatic Park and we'd be able to watch the air show during lunch. I imagine this little spot would be Packed if the Blue Angels were flying but sadly ... they and all other military aircraft were grounded this year. Because of this, the entire City was much less active than any year prior. But the advantage was being able to get into places like this without a reservation!! Barrio has a great outdoor patio however it was closed for a private party so we opted to sit inside. Our table was right I front of the huge floor to ceiling that overlooked Aquatic Park so we weren't complaining. When we arrived, the hostess let us know there would be a 90 minute maximum and a $25 per person minimum. Wasn't shocking since it's literally ocean side in SF but still a little high for lunch. Little did I know, we'd meet that minimum just on the pitcher of margaritas!! Ouch! Service was absolutely wonderful and the view was unbelievable. Here's what we ordered: BARRIO TRINITY: guac & salsa were tasty but the queso was pretty bland although very smooth and creamy. FREE DIPPY SAUCES: if you know me, you know I like to get ALL the dippy sauces. My fav though was the habanero. Super spicy but really tasty. PITCHER OF PINEAPPLE MARGS: as good as these were, they were definitely not $75 good for a picture that was 80% ice. BIRRIA TACOS: two of us got these and they were delicious! I would order these again for sure. All lunch entrées come with beans and rice, which both were pretty bland so the sauces drizzled on top helped. SHRIMP TACOS: I really enjoyed these in the pickled onions and mango slaw or excellent. Again, the rice and beans were lackluster. You really can't beat the View in the service. The margaritas were tasty but a little too expensive in my opinion. If the pictures were just the margarita and the ice was just in the glasses, I might be able to swallow the $75 charge. The Service was excellent, friendly and knowledgeable of the most liked dishes. My wife loved the view from the bay window overlooking the San Francisco Bay,Alcatraz and Marin coast. The Barrio Margaritas were fresh ingredients and well balanced. We split the 2 tacos Pastora with blue corn fresh tortillas plate that were spectacular flavor and good amount of meat. The chips, salsa and guacamole where our encore and some more of the blue corn tortillas. First time here , great place to enjoy 5pm Saturday light and get out of the cool breeze summer weather. The food tasted OK, not bad, but also nothing memorable. The size of our burritos were also OK, a little smaller than a super burrito in a regular Mexican restaurant. My biggest disappointment was that there were no chips and salsa before the meal. What Mexican restaurant doesn't service chips and salsa before a meal? Anyway I do have to say that where this place shined, was our server Karla. She was amazing! If it weren't for her I'd probably only rate this place a two star. Celebrating Father's Day at Ghirardelli Square in San Francisco's Fishermans Wharf district was a delicious gift. We played a very competitive round at "Subpar" miniature golf and worked up an appetite on a quite June 15, 2025 evening. My son and I walked around the square before discovering Barrio. Located in Ghirardelli Square overlooking the San Francisco Bay, we arrived during a spectacular sunset. We were graciously welcomed by the host and seated promptly. The resturants was full and the service staff were busy engaged with juggling multiple tables. It took a bit of time before Karla R. graciously asked if "we have been helped?" We shared we hadn't been helped yet and she quickly orchestrated getting our place settings and water service promptly. I was with my youngest son and I informed him we had been in the facility previously when the was a young child and the space was were a former "Lori's Diner" had occupied. The new resturant the "Barrio" opened in 2021. Our waitress Karla R. took our appetitizers and entrée orders. I selected the shrimp tacos and my son ordered the chicken tinga. In addition he added a basket of warm tortilla chips and freshly made guacamole which included large avocado chunks, purple onions and familiar Yucatan seasonings. My son's roommate is Mexican and felt compelled ordering the corn dish Esquite and proceeded to tell me how there were few good Mexican restaurants in Honolulu where he lives. We ordered the Hibiscus Lemonade and Pineapple Frescas respectively. They were both delicious and very refreshing! Our appetitizers arrived very quietly which pleasantly surprised my son given our initial wait time. Our Barrio entrées arrived to us warmly by Karla R. and we were thrilled to see the chef's culinary creations. They were beautiful and IMHO "out preformed" their menu written descriptions. Fresh. Colorful. Creative. Appealing. I was extremely pleasantly surprised! Wow! My son had said he wasn't feeling too hungry as we reviewed the menu, however he devoured his chicken tacos in warp speed! As you can see from my pictures the Barrio's sets the stage of an extraordinary environment for a beautiful sunset overlooking The Bay. What an amazing way to conclude a wonderful Father's Day. Glass is filled with ice at ridiculous prices. Guacamole and chips were also meh. Better off going to Chiptole. I came here for lunch with a friend on a weekend, and it fortunately wasn't too crowded. I have celiac (strict gluten-free) and I'm vegetarian. The place has a very casual vibe. They had some large rice tortillas so I was excited to try a gluten free veggie burrito. I asked several times about cross contaimination due to celiac. We got some chips and salsa, which were decent. The burrito ended up being pretty good, and served with some nice sauces. Unfortunately, the first time they brought the burrito, I asked to confirm if this was really the gluten-free one as it seemed too large, which the server said yes. About 30 seconds later, he came back and said it was incorrect and replaced with a new GF burrito. Fortunately, I hadn't eaten it yet. Went here on a Monday evening after sunset and had such a good experience. My boyfriend and I shared a birria burrito and everything about it was solid. The staff was incredibly kind -- they even turned on a heater for us after asking. They brought out an assortment of salsas with the burrito, and the chef who made them actually came out to explain each one. He was super knowledgeable and clearly proud of his work, as he should be. The green tomatillo salsa was more traditional with a kick, the guajillo (red) salsa was really flavorful and reminded me a bit of chipotle, and the habanero was very spicy but so good. We took the chef's advice and mixed it with sour cream, which was perfect. The burrito itself was amazing -- it honestly gave me my mom's cooking vibes. The frijoles tasted homemade in the best way, and the proportions of rice, beans, and everything else were spot on. We both agreed it was a 10/10. It is a little pricey, but that's expected for SF. We started with a coke and lime and a margarita. Both were nice. When it came to food, that's the only issue I had with this place if anything at all. The birria tacos were incredibly flavorful and stuffed which was nice to split between the two of us as we had other dinner plans. The only reason I took off two stars was because we were both grossed out by the chips that night. It was obvious by the taste and smell of them that the restaurant had not changed their frying oil for a while. The chips while wonderfully crispy had an incredibly old and terrible taste to them that required us to dip it Excessively and queso to try to mask the nasty flavor. Located at Ghirardelli Square, Barrio's view of the Bay is just as epic from their patio as it is from their indoor dining area. We ordered four kinds of tacos: fried shrimp with its chipotle mayo & mango & cabbage salad was by far the tastiest; chicken tinga reminded me of Afritada, a Filipino chicken dish with similar tomatoey flavors; beef birria was not a good representation of its kind as the meat resembled a roast rather than crispy, fried beef; & al pastor was the worst of the bunch as it lacked flavor & any greasy, shaved-straight-off-the-trompo goodness that my dining partner is used to. It must also be mentioned that their rice is an abomination to all Mexican rice, everywhere. As for drinks, their michelada is extremely beer forward; the spices & mix did not permeate the drink, however, the blend of sugar & chile salt on the rim was a winner (I'll be doing that at home from now on!) Their Virgin Paloma was crisp & refreshing, though I was looking for a stronger grapefruit taste. Total with tax & tip: ~ $95. Spendy, but priced in line with restaurants in this touristy neighborhood.
