I usually don't leave reviews but this time I felt like I had to. Capurro's is a family business that has been around for four generations! Loved our Fourth of July staycation in San Francisco for the Fourth. We stayed at the Argonaut hotel and this gem was right across the street. Capurro's reminds me of a Bucco de Bepo with the colors and decor, its very vibrant and very welcoming. We loved our lunch so much, we brought our family back for dinner! Here's the strangest thing, the place was EMPTY at lunch. Dinner was a little wait but not bad considering the CHAOS of 4th in SF. What brought us back? The calamari and marinara dipping sauce. My 9 year old son, LOVED IT, it was so tender, probably the best calamari I have ever had. So fresh, so delicious, perfectly seasoned and fried. For lunch we also had fish and chips and grilled chicken on their house salad, both lovely. Fast forward to dinner - we had the pleasure of being greeted by Paul, the owner. And we are so glad we did - not only did we get to learn more about the incredible history of his restaurant, we learned Paul had just finished making the gnocchi - the pasta is made fresh every day. Gnocchi - Two in our party ordered the gnocchi, one with pesto and one with bolognese - both AMAZING - oh and they added a chicken that was tender and well seasoned, maybe blackened? We will most definitely be driving from San Jose to Capurro's for more of this gnocchi. Ravioli - I had the ravioli with some secret blend of spices. I normally can't finish a bowl of pasta - I did not care, I ate it ALL. Tender, flavorful, I had it with marinara which was perfect, light enough - feels like its a recipe made with time and quality ingredients. Pizza - My son's pizza was delicious, super fresh dough - cheese pull was a 10 out of 10 per my son. Spaghetti and Meatballs - My nephew and SIL had 3 giant meatballs each in their spaghetti. OMG SO GOOD. The only issue I would say is the ordering process, I feel like this format is becoming more prevalent, where you order at a station and then get seated, which is totally fine, its just they only had 1 order taker. Again, it was fine - but the people were all pleasant. Paul is awesome and we will absolutely be back for this delicious food! read more

Going in, I was a little worried. The place was not busy for a Saturday night and the Yelp rating was a "meh" at 3.6. But I gotta tell ya, I was really happy with everything here. First, we were greeted by a gentleman when we entered who told us all about the history and the different meal options. He recommended the clam chowder, which I will get to later. You order at the bar, get a number, and go take a seat at a table. The interior is overwhelming red but in a good way. Gives the place a festive and welcoming ambiance. It works. The service is fast. I'm so glad the owner/manager who greeted us recommend the chowder. That bread bowl was one of the best clam chowders I've ever eaten. I put it up there with Boston's best. Fresh and flavorful, and the sourness in the bread bowl it's served in just compliments it somehow. Don't let the overall ratings here dissuade you from coming. It is a welcome contrast to the rest of Fisherman's Wharf, where everyone is high and seemingly without purpose...third world you all. The decline of California is tangible out here. But this place reminds me of the old California where the employees care and are hopeful, hard working, and helpful. I really enjoyed my meal here. read more

We came here for dinner because I had a Groupon for dinner. Now, for $85 dollars we got. 2 whole dungeness crabs,a large Caesar salad,large angel hair pasta with garlic olive oil,and a large loaf of Boudin sourdough bread. I know right!! All that delicious food for a great price. Everything was absolutely delicious. And came out nice and hot. We also got to meet the owner who was very nice and told us the crab we had was caught that morning. The only thing was that our server was kinda non existent. Probably because you have to order your food first then find a table to wait for your food. It would be nice to order from the table instead. But thats ok. We really enjoyed our evening out. Minute maid lemonade at bar prices, heavy mayonnaise not flavorful crab sandwich, luke warm clam chowder. Genuinely sad and overpriced oysters Rockefeller and heavily battered fish. Sometimes I have to remind myself how incredibly dodgy it can be to eat at Fisherman's Wharf. Some places like Franciscan Crab and The Codmother Fish & Chips break out from the pack and actually provide satisfying experiences. I had a good clam chowder at the bar at Blue Mermaid, so I figured maybe after all these years of avoidance that a visit to Capurro's could be worthwhile. Was I being naive? The answer was an emphatic YES. First, I had to wait an inordinate amount of time to be seated at a table hidden from the rest of the dining room. Not sure why. Looking at the menu, I was struck that they offer a $13.99 Small Louie Salad with romaine and iceberg lettuce, sliced avocado, spring onion, grape tomatoes, and a hard-boiled egg, ladled in their Louie dressing (Photo 5). The ingredients varied in freshness with the avocado looking pretty dark and the spring onion barely there. The dressing was mixed with the chopped lettuce and nothing else. I had never heard of a Louie without shrimp or crab automatically included. I could've had shrimp for an additional $10.99, so a true Shrimp Louie costs $25 for the small. The addition of crab is offered at "market price". Who knows how much you'd be spending on the crab? The $8.99 cup of Clam Chowder was described not as New England-style but as 'White' (Photo 6). That might have something to do with the dearth of clams or any recognizable seafood flavor for that matter. I wasn't offered any bread, but at least I got the bag of oyster crackers. The chowder certainly needed something to give it texture. FOOD - 2 stars...Louie without shrimp, chowder without much flavor AMBIANCE - 2.5 stars...not sure why I was hidden away in their cavernous space but I could guess SERVICE - 2 stars...where did he go? First time visiting this place. They have a seat where you want policy and you pay the cashier for your meal. The place is very casual with a good seafood menu and pasta options. They have a kids menu with spaghetti and meatballs, fettuccini Alfredo, and fish and chips. For their regular menu they have crab sandwich, oysters, fish and chips, meatball sandwiches, chicken sandwich, and pasta. I would say their crab sandwich was not what I expected. I prefer a crab sandwich on grilled sliced sourdough with fries on the side. The one here was on a soft French roll and it tasted ok. Great place to go to when coming to fisherman's wharf and ghiradelli square. Very family friendly as they greet you at the door. You come in and order at the bar on your right and then find a place to sit. The food itself is fantastic! We ordered the garlic and cheese sourdough bread (for the kids), a meatball sandwich and the two crispy taco's. The bread was soft and fluffy and very flavorful (sourdough). Loved my visit here for their veggie flatbread. It was an absolute treat, soft fluffy bread with crispy exterior and bottom. All the toppings tasted extremely fresh, too. It exceeded my expectations because I was used to smaller portions and thinner breading. Another surprise was their crab arancine (fried risotto crab ball), which had a zesty lemon flavor that was hidden in the sauce on the plate. It made each bite that much more enjoyable. I was surprised to see their price tag, yup people, this restaurant is located in the touristy area, but their prices are definitely better than most local food joints in San Francisco! We ordered the meatballs panini, chicken parmesan panini and a bowl of clam chowder. They all came in generous portions and were delicious and warm, perfect for the weather! The service was friendly and the restaurant was spacious, great for kids because they have kids menu and great for large groups too! Ordering is simple, you go up to the counter/bar and place your order! Waitress checked on us too. I was sad to see empty tables though, they should have gotten more traffic considering the premium real estate. I hope they will thrive! I'm local, but was playing tourist. The cioppino was the best I had the seafood was fresh and generous portions. The clam chowder bread bowl was a winner. The spaghetti and meatballs were one of the best kid meals our kids had and reasonably priced at $10 in a tourist spot. The decor is great and full of memorabilia . On December 28, 2025, my family of 10 went to Capurro's Restaurant in San Francisco for the 1st time for dinner. We had such a great time engaging with the very personable owner who was very accommodating to our needs when we had to change our reservation from 6:00 to 5:00pm. Upon arrival, we ordered at the front counter, sat down, and within about 10 minutes received our food from the very friendly staff. The food was delicious, reasonably priced, and the portions amazing. We felt welcomed and appreciated. Came in at 8:00 PM to try and order takeout. There was no one around to direct me. Naturally, I went to the bartender, who was busy chatting up other tourists. He eventually told me I could order through him. When I start ordering, he then says no, there's a line of people before me. There's no visible line so I was confused. Not sure if this is how it works or when business is slower. This approach made it feel like a self service place. The food was average. Looks great but not all the dishes tasted great. - kids fish and chips - quite oily - chicken alfredo - noodles were fine but the chicken was salty - steam mussels - ok - Louie salad - the best of all the dishes.
