The Brooklyn Tree is located in a quieter area of Williamsburg. Its muted dark brown and striped awning makes it easy to miss - I accidentally walked right past it on my way there. Both indoor and outdoor seating was available, but the interior was a bit cramped and loud, so my friend and I opted to sit outdoors. They have very effective heaters outside, which made us much more comfortable. They were relatively busy on a Sunday afternoon; it wasn't as crowded as a typical weekend brunch spot, but most tables were occupied. The service is quick, so even if there was a wait, it probably wouldn't be too long. Ordering occurs at the counter, and then the food is brought to the table. We weren't aware of this until after we arrived, but it wasn't an issue - just good to note, in the event you're expecting a full-service restaurant. There are plenty of vegetarian and vegan options on the menu, and while I was interested in seeing what the tofu schnitzel was all about, I was in the mood for something lighter that day. I had the veggie sandwich with a side of sweet potato fries, which fit the bill. The sandwich, served on brick oven ciabatta, contains hummus, avocado, pickles, and sprouts. Stopped by here for a quick lunch before going to an event nearby. We came in with a group of 6 and the restaurant was pretty packed, had to wait a while to get seats anywhere. I got a Chicken Schnitzel which was really good! A tiny bit on the tough side and a tiny bit dark, maybe slightly overcooked. But the taste was great and so was the fries that came with it. Went for brunch three times now and each time the food was well prepared and consistent. The staff is very friendly and extremely appreciative of your business. It's a small place with only about 10 tables inside and an outdoor dining shed on the street with more tables. Hopefully, business has picked up enough and they can afford to heat the outdoor shed to handle more customers. Sweet pea slaw was good with cabbage n carrots to boot. Overall food tasted great, fresh, and wasn't too greasy. I know this is a comfort food place, but wish there were a cooked mixed veggies option (IE: kale, okra, snow pea leaves, broccoli, bean sprouts, watercress, napa, baby book choy, romanesco, chayote, kohlrabi, fiddleheads, treviso, sweet potato greens, etc). While searching for a place open late on a Monday, we ran across this little gem. This humble cafe serves American comfort food with a flare, along with various juices and milkshakes. Every part of our meal was excellent. The tomato and cucumber salad was made with super fresh greens and garnished with toasted garbanzo beans. Served in a metal mixing bowl, it was big enough to feed three or four people. The delicious tomato soup had a cheesy/herby vibe from the ricotta and the thyme oil. Husband's juicy, tender meatloaf was accompanied by mashed red potatoes. The chef accommodated our daughter's request for just one kind of cheese on her toasted cheese sandwich. I loved my Brooklyn Tree Burger and sweet potato fries. Daughter and I finished the meal with the homemade chocolate chip cookies. The cafe has a rustic ambience with brick walls, a rough plank floor, and little shelves of books. Indoor seating is limited, but there are extra tables outdoors beneath a pretty lanai. Most of the business on this cool, breezy night seemed to be takeout and delivery, and there was no wait. Brooklyn Tree does not take reservations--it's first come, first served. People need to RELAX on drinking so much haterade. Brooklyn Tree is not bad at all so I'm extremely surprised to see two star reviews in here, especially ones that seem like they've only eaten here once. I usually always have to eat at a place AT LEAST 3 times before adding a Yelp review (unless I'm just visiting). I've never actually dined here, I usually just order takeout & by the time I come back home, yes the food has already gotten cold, but it still tastes delicious -- which obviously is a sign that the food is good, even when it's cold! Their grass-fed burger is SOOO on point. It's so on point they were like, "Screw the toppings! It's all about the cow, baby!" Ok, they didn't actually say that when creating this burger, but that's what I imagined. Bold move if you ask me, to not to add your traditional onions, tomatoes & greens, or any toppings matter of fact. But also smart because you can tell they wanted to highlight the quality of the beef & let me tell you...GRASS-FED makes a HUGE difference in quality. I usually come for their burger, but I've definitely had their chicken cutlet & mac & cheese. Their chicken cutlet is nothing extraordinary & I will agree with some of the other reviews that their mac & cheese has way too many (thick) onions in it, but it's definitely not enough for me to give them a 2-star review. They are also being unique as they use english muffins as their buns and the aged white cheddar - spectacular. Holy moly good. Highly recommend. Side - frenchfries - they were made to order. Crispy and with the sea salt. Really good. Cheese puffs - man oh man. Just try it. Don't know what to say but just try it. Okay - so u can see that the food is on point - but what really sets the place apart? Service. Period. It's not a sit down restaurant with fancy waiters but the staff makes sure to come around to each table and asking how the food is and how their day was going. How can you beat that? You don't see many places that come out from behind the register to see how everything is. This puts them over the top and differentiates them even more.
