I was looking for a gift for a cat and dog lover when my neighbor recommended Tomlinson's,…read morespecifically this location near Target. I had never been to a Tomlinson's before--honestly, I had never even heard of it since they don't have any in California. I learned during my visit that there are 18 locations in Austin, and WOW, what an amazing store! The customer service here is on another level--it honestly felt like the hospitality of a high-end hotel. The staff is incredibly kind and welcoming, even opening the door for customers. They truly go out of their way to help, and I'm not exaggerating! I believe the employee who assisted me was Vanessa, and she was fantastic. She helped me pick out the perfect gifts, especially for the cat-related items since I don't have a cat myself. I was shopping for an 8-year-old who has two cats, so I wanted the best toys. I ended up choosing a faux rabbit foot toy with feathers for self-play, a classic "Lambie" plush, and a handmade hemp catnip mouse with a long tail for interactive play. I even learned a lot about catnip, which I had heard of before but didn't actually know much about--this staff is truly knowledgeable! I also brought my dog with me, and not only did he have a blast playing with other dogs, but the store also gave him free treats to try. They even sent me home with some freeze-dried sample treats, which was such a nice touch. The selection of dog toys here is incredible--I'd honestly be hesitant to bring a child in because the toys are so high-quality, they could pass for children's toys! I ended up getting an amazing eco-friendly crocodile toy made entirely of recycled materials. Its legs are ropes for tug-of-war, and its hollow body holds a replaceable water bottle that creates that satisfying crunching sound dogs love. Once the bottle is chewed up, you can swap it out for a new one--such a smart design! This store has everything--leashes, collars, treats, and a huge variety of toys for both tiny and giant dogs. They also had the cutest little plush toys shaped like root vegetables with adorable faces--absolutely melted my heart! Prices were super affordable, too. Honestly, after seeing what they offer, I don't see the point in ordering pet supplies on Amazon anymore. Stores like this deserve our support, and it's a place my dog genuinely enjoys visiting. I was also looking for travel-sized dog food for a trip and found some perfect 3.5 oz pouches for only $2, which I could take in my carry-on. While browsing, I noticed a lot of repeat customers stopping in just to grab their favorite treats from a self-serve treat station, kind of like those bulk snack bins at Sprouts or Whole Foods. Next time, I'll have to check it out for my dog! Another thing I need to ask about is their nail trimming service, which my neighbor mentioned. While I was there, I even saw the staff helping deliver an adopted puppy to its new home--such a sweet moment! And as I was checking out, I learned they offer same-day delivery, which is so convenient. I haven't placed an order yet, but it's good to know that option exists. Overall, this was such a fun and memorable shopping experience. I'll definitely be coming back and getting all my pet supplies here from now on!

APA!'s mission is to promote and provide the resources, education, and programs needed to eliminate the killing of companion animals. Their vision is that every shelter animal, in Central Texas and beyond, gets a true chance at the life they deserve. Austin Pets Alive! is not an average animal shelter. They pioneer comprehensive, innovative programs designed to save the animals most at risk for euthanasia. They have a 95% animal save rate...the highest in the country. I volunteer as a dog walker every day. The dogs are well cared for, and they ensure that each dog gets walked 3 times a day. In addition, they participate in play year activities to make sure they get proper exercise and socialization. The kennels are always kept clean and hosed down after pet accidents. They have matchmaker services to make sure an adopted pet is compatible with their new owners. And they offer a lifetime of behavioral support, by dog behavior experts, for adopted dogs. Austin Pets Alive values their volunteers and hold appreciation meetings twice a year. The most recent one as at AGBG, with free pizza for everyone. They were voted best nonprofit for several years.

I found incompetence across the board at APA. Will never go back.

The groomer, Shawna, greeted us with a negative attitude and immediately took an accusatory tone about Peace's mats. Instead of being helpful, she made it sound like Peace's mats were some huge problem that she couldn't handle without drastic measures. I accepted that she might need to shave some areas and asked how long it would take. She said two to four hours, and I agreed. An hour later, I got a call saying they couldn't continue at all due to a corporate policy about mats behind the ears. I found it baffling that they wouldn't just complete other parts of the service--like de-shedding or trimming the nails--if there was one area they couldn't handle right then. To make matters even stranger, when I picked Peace up, I saw they had already done part of the service by removing mats on her backside. Shawna even showed me the fur she'd removed. Yet when I asked if they could at least trim Peace's nails so I wouldn't have to worry about her comfort, Shawna refused. She claimed she couldn't do the nails without charging me again on another day, even though I'd already paid for a package that included nail trimming. It was completely illogical: they had started some parts of the grooming, but she insisted I had to come back on another day and be charged again if I wanted the nails done. When I questioned this, she just sighed impatiently and basically made it clear she didn't care. There was no apology, no attempt to find a reasonable solution--just rude, unhelpful behavior. I wouldn't recommend this location to anyone.

Finally, one day when we were going to Target, my boyfriend suggested we first go look at the baby pigs. I was thrilled! When we walked in there, the first thing I noticed was the incredible stench of reptiles and tiny mammals (one star off for that). Whew! Once I got past that, I felt like a kid at the zoo. Each aquarium had an even more amazing animal than the one I'd just looked at: bearded dragons, veiled chameleons, exotic roaches (okay, that's just disgusting, and I'm glad they didn't come out to say hello), chinchillas, ferrets, and even just plain old mice. There were so many varieties of reptiles, I couldn't remember them all. They even had a Reticulated Python in its own closed off quarters that had large viewing windows. I don't think I'd ever seen a snake so large that close. Truly frightening. It will definitely give you the creepies. A gigantic tortoise also free-roamed the shop - he was fast, and he was chomping on all lettuce strewn about the floor. Oh, they didn't have any more baby pigs, but they offered to put us on the mailing list. We politely declined, but I just may have to go back and see if they're there next time.
