I recently took my Great Pyrenees, Peace, to the Petco on Bee Cave Road for grooming, and it was a frustrating experience from start to finish. The groomer, Shawna, greeted us with a negative attitude and immediately took an accusatory tone about Peace's mats. Instead of being helpful, she made it sound like Peace's mats were some huge problem that she couldn't handle without drastic measures. I accepted that she might need to shave some areas and asked how long it would take. She said two to four hours, and I agreed. An hour later, I got a call saying they couldn't continue at all due to a corporate policy about mats behind the ears. I found it baffling that they wouldn't just complete other parts of the service--like de-shedding or trimming the nails--if there was one area they couldn't handle right then. To make matters even stranger, when I picked Peace up, I saw they had already done part of the service by removing mats on her backside. Shawna even showed me the fur she'd removed. Yet when I asked if they could at least trim Peace's nails so I wouldn't have to worry about her comfort, Shawna refused. She claimed she couldn't do the nails without charging me again on another day, even though I'd already paid for a package that included nail trimming. It was completely illogical: they had started some parts of the grooming, but she insisted I had to come back on another day and be charged again if I wanted the nails done. When I questioned this, she just sighed impatiently and basically made it clear she didn't care. There was no apology, no attempt to find a reasonable solution--just rude, unhelpful behavior. I wouldn't recommend this location to anyone. read more

We usually love this Petco but their hours are misrepresented and falsely advertised. We desperately needed cat food this morning and they would not let us in saying they open at 10am when their hours posted on their door and online say 9am M-Sat. It is not hard to adjust a suction cup sign and edit online to correct hours. read more

Our dog needed help, for sure, but to go through the nonsense of telling us his hair was too long is nuts. And the manager hid out the whole time! We left. And we will never go back for any reason. I booked a grooming appointment for 8 AM, which is the earliest in the day appointments are made. The store itself does not open until 9 AM, so the groomers are supposed to let you in. However, whoever had the keys was late, so my dog and I waited for half an hour outside, along with one of the groomers who did not have a key. After 30 minutes, my dog and I left extremely disappointed. This occurred on Dec. 13, 2023. Caution to all, if you book an appointment before the main store opens, you cannot be assured that anyone will actually be there to let you in. read more

This Petco is situated at a great location - clean store with friendly staff. I'm a bit surprised with some of the reviews as it's not an accurate assessment of this location. Each visit has been a pleasant experience. Any time I had a question or concern related to my fur baby, I received attentive service. As for grooming, I've taken my dog a few times with no complaints. I have a medium/large sized dog and he hates the dryer. I now bathe him at home but do prefer to take him in for a monthly Mini Make "Rover". This walk-in service includes nail trim and buffing, teeth-brushing or breath refresh, ear cleaning, light feet trim + paw shave, and a scented spritz. Petco is great for the fur baby parent. It's best when your a member, which is free by the way. I've been doing some research for potty training wee wee pads, and I thought Dollar Tree was great, four pads for a dollar. Then I found Walmart, 100 pads for $19.99. Petco was 150 pads for $19.99, and I'm so grateful. My 16 year old cat is diagnosed with kidney failure and these pads are a life changer. The deals they have here is a life changer and I'm so thankful for the costs of their products. It's not only helped my life, but the life and environment of the kitty in my life. WORST haircut my labradoodle has ever received. Groomer said pup wasn't behaving and she was having a hard time, yet she shaved his ENTIRE tail (not common for doodles), and did a horrible job. Body is uneven, and she didn't even attempt to groom any part of his head. He looks ridiculous, and we are NOT happy. Groomer also began giving medical advice, which is not a part of her role. Managers provided zero assistance, and recommended we groom him ourselves. Is this the type of service Petco is looking to provide? Not to mention they overbooked appointments and stopped halfway, telling us we had to bring him back again because she ran out of time. She was very helpful and nice. I did see several fish dead sucked into the filter while I was there though. The fish I did get died the next morning. I am very knowledgeable about proper fish care. I called the store asking if I could get a refund and the manager was very rude to me. She was telling me that none of the fish come in sick after I was told and SAW otherwise. I can't read it, which he responded just with "I don't know", he just stood there not knowing apparently nothing about the adoption paper or cared to find a way to make it right, just standing there for a few minutes, which later with not a care in the world he just turn his back & just walk around. Never had a bad experience here. My pup is always groomed by Cassandra and she does a wonderful job and remembers him whenever we walk in. They always run towards each other it's the cutest thing. She really cares about him and I can tell. Also have never had an issue with finding anything here everything I have needed is always in stock and they also price match. When my dog got neutered I had to go back three times because he didn't like the cone we got him/it didn't fit (my fault there). They noticed I kept coming in on that day and came to help me pick one out that would be good/comfortable for his breed and age. I took my golden doodle for a bath and the groomer claimed that she had too many knots (which was not true because I brush her three times a week) and had to cut her hair. We specifically asked for them to leave her hair as long as possible and they shaved her to the bone. She has razor burns behind her ears and legs. They were lazy and didn't want to give her a proper haircut. They still asked for a tip! I'm never going back not even to buy food or dog supplies. We brought our 2 dogs in to Vetco for heartworm/flea prevention & vaccination updates. BOTH of our dogs were put into extremely physical chokeholds and our smallest dog was physically forced down in a very harmful way that has caused physical discomfort. We were given the wrong medication for our smallest dog, went back & got the correct medicine, only to discover we were given the incorrect medicine again due to vet not writing down his current weight & assuming he weighed 17lbs (even though the scale said 23lbs) Not only were our dogs physically harmed and treated wrongly but we were sent out the door 2 times with incorrect medicine. read more

Firstly, I'd like to point out that my review has nothing to do with the quality of product at PetCo, but about the experience I had dealing with the groomers (which I've seen on many reviews that other people had similar experiences). In a few words they were: rude, condescending, and unhelpful. We brought in our new rescue dog for a nail buffing, which was recommended by the dog trainer at the store (he never mentioned needing paperwork). Our rescue has all her proper shots but didn't realize this was needed to bring in (I totally understand why though). When we were asked if we brought the proof of a rabies vaccination, we mentioned that we didn't because we didn't know it was needed. What followed was a the biggest eye roll I've ever seen by the groomer (she was blonde and was wearing a ponytail, and I think had eyeglasses), and then a slew of condescending comments. She was so rude. I get it, we forgot the paperwork, but what's with all the hostility? We are paying customers here... What actually makes this hilarious, is that we had all the proper proof on our phone in an email. So she literally was rude to a customer for no reason, for something that we ACTUALLY HAD. After the lovely eye rolls, and attitude, and condescending comments, I said to my boyfriend "wow, why was she so rude, that was so unnecessary?" and was overheard by a woman working the register. She looked at me and kinda shrugged her shoulders in the suggestion that this happens often, she said "I know, I'm sorry" with a look of disappointment on her face for our experience. Our dogs nails got buffed, but PetCo won't receive another visit from us. Check your attitude Groomer girl. Most people won't put up with it. read more

I have a small dog who needs a bath and a trim every few months. With guests coming in for SXSW this week, I decided it was high time for this. The groomer we used to use is no longer in the area, so I called this Petco last week on Thursday to make an appointment and was told the first available would be today at 11 AM. Although I normally work nine hour days during the week, I had the day off today so I went ahead and took the appointment. Petco called me only two hours before the appointment was supposed to happen to inform me that their groomer was not coming in, and my appointment was canceled. I was not offered a discount or an opportunity to get it done later today or even a referral to another store. I was simply told that my appointment was canceled with no warning, and of course every other place I've called is either closed or booked for the day. I used to come to this Petco every couple weeks to pick up a few things for my dog, but I won't ever be setting foot in here again. When you have an employee call in sick, you don't just close down for the day that they'll be gone and turn customers away at the door, you call around and find someone to fill in for them. This is really indicative of how important their business and their customer base is to them - not at all. read more

this is buffalo. the kindest most lovable dog you'll ever meet. yesterday buffalo went to #petco to get a simple hair cut. after FOUR hours, they called us and told us they haven't started with her hair cut yet, but they would have to go much much shorter than we wanted, because of a few mats (which she has had way worse and it's never been an issue). disappointed, we told them to go ahead. BUT 30 minutes later, they called and told us they only shaved her halfway because she was being aggressive (WHICH has NEVER happened before the multiple times we have gotten her hair cut). so we went to go pick our half shaved dog from the rudest groomer and manager ever. we absolutely did not pay and left furious. she then came home and proceeded to drink two bowls of water because she was so thirsty, which leads us to think they didn't give her any water. i'm not one to complain, especially on social media. but our experience was ridiculously horrible. and now have to get our dog groomed all over again. read more

While this place only gets 2 stars, I continually go back because they are close to my house and because the next closest pet store has worse service and stock than this place..eeehh, not too many good options in this space! Every time I go to this Petco there is only 1 employee to be found and they are working the register, trying to answer customer questions, doing returns, and carrying bulky items to cars! Yes, with 4 people standing in line the cashier took about 8 minutes to load a woman's car with several large bags of dog food. There was no one else he could call for help so the rest of us were stuck waiting. It also seems that whatever I go for (colored dog food bowls, dog food, dog treats, small dog collar, potty training bell), they just happen to be out of. They continually refer me to the website to order online, however many times I need the items sooner than I can get with shipping. Wish they'd hire more employees to help customers and keep the store better stocked. I did try a new locally owned store nearby and will definitely try them again before returning to Petco. read more

People that don't know how to handle different kinds of dogs temperament should not go into the dog grooming business. I've been taking my 10 lb Shih Tzu to get groomed for 4 years now, never had a problem . When I get to Petco, the groomer Allison refused to take her because my dog was not friendly immediately. She takes time to warm up. She was growling (not with teeth, just apprehensively ) so Allison immediately said she felt uncomfortable and refused, which caused me to confront her and the manager (who was very helpful and tried his best). He ended up convincing her to take my dog, which she did, and of course they call me an hour later Saying that my dog tried to bite her and it caused her to cut my dog with the clippers on the back of the leg. That is a self fulfilling prophecy, because dogs sense fear. She's never bit anyone and was very friendly to all the other staff except her, who obviously only knows how to handle dogs that immediately love her, no questions asked. Now I have a half shaven bleeding dog . I am never shopping at any petco again. You really shouldn't work with dogs if you only Know how to handle the super nice ones. read more

I tried to communicate to a worker here that the conditions of the cat cages were unacceptable (filthy, odorous, no water). He made no effort to resolve the situation until I had corporate on the phone, claiming it was someone else's responsibility, and their shift would be starting soon. Absolutely terrible experience, which I guess is to be expected, because it's PetCo. I made a grooming appointment for my dog (just a bath and nail trimming), and when I brought him in was told that I didn't have an appointment, and did I bring the paperwork the had asked for. No. I hadn't. Because the person who made my appointment never told me to. No appointment had been made, and the girl at the counter made it seem like I was a major inconvenience. The girl with the dreadlocks was rude and unhelpful and told me she couldn't help me. I told her I'd take my dog somewhere else and she retorted, "Have fun." Probably for the best. At about 12:50 PM on a Monday afternoon I needed change for a $20 bill, so I stepped into my local Petco store. I saw only one customer. After hearing my request, the groomer called the cashier to the front. I asked the cashier if he could give my four fives for my $20 bill. The cashier said he would have to ask the manager, and headed for the back. The manager (a stout gentleman, name unknown so I'll refer to him as "Mr. Customer Service") came out, looked me over, and said to the cashier, "No." The cashier then came to me and said, "No, we cannot open the register." I left the store without saying anything else. I am a licensed professional engineer and was dressed in dark slacks and light blue shirt, the normal work clothing for someone of my profession except that I was wearing sneakers. I used the email system at Petco.com to ask if a store manager really cannot open a register. The next day I received a generic "Thank you for contacting PETCO regarding your concern with our store at 3201 BEE CAVES ROAD. We are sorry to hear about your recent experience" reply. I do not know why my request for change was refused, and I hope this is not indicative of the treatment that most customers (and team members) receive. read more

I absolutely love this Petco. I live closer to the Brodie Lane location, but stop in here every time I have an appointment in Westlake. Their new fish specialist, Keith, is especially knowledgeable and helpful - so their fish department has changed hands since the previous review someone posted of it. If you're looking to start up a tank or solve a problem, please go visit him! He said Jason in the fish department could also help me if he's not there one day. Their fish are well cared for, and the employees truly care about the well being of the animals AND the ones you take home. I've heard negative things about another major pet chain (outside of Austin) where the employee said they were advised by a manager to give poor advice to get more sales when the customer's fish died! I am glad to have found a store that's so knowledgeable and actually cares. Unfortunately when I first bought my betta this summer here, I was told a 1 gallon was OK, when I later learned that a 2.5 gallon should be the minimum for a betta. At least they were smart enough to advise me against anything else besides a betta or guppy in that small a tank (though I wish they'd just stop selling all those teeny tiny inappropriate betta tanks - but that's a corporate issue). My only complaint is that I wish their selection of fish tank accessories was larger. If you're looking for a variety of ornaments, the Brodie Lane location has a wider selection. As a tip, always check the clearance stand here - they always have some great deals! read more

The Westlake Lead Petco dog behavior trainer Uses military- style dog training where he himself was trained. He does not hesitate to interrupt your shopping and ask to show you some dog tips. Beware! Twice on occasion when I have gone in, he has "asked" to demonstrate training skills. Boy! I couldn't believe how hard he jerked my puppy's collar when she didn't follow the sit command. He uses the "skill" of a leash "jerk" on the collar to correct a dog's non-desired behavior (such as pulling on the leash on a walk). The "jerk" can be substituted with a "choke if using a prong collar or a shock if using an electronic collar, both of which I could guess he uses in his training. At the time this FIRST occurred my puppy was 6 mos old and had been in training for 8 weeks already through an Austin program that utilizes Positive reinforcement methods (which usually use praise, treats, and sometimes clickers, head halter collars, or a gentle leader. Things are going well, I avoid this store whenever I can. Petco needs a new lead trainer who has training in more than one method. I also prefer a non smoking trainer. read more
