I cannot recommend the team at VEG (Veterinary Emergency Group) enough. We had a terrifying experience yesterday evening when we had to bring in our two-year-old Great Pyrenees mix for a major laceration. From the second we arrived, Dr. Pearson and the entire care team--Megan, Ethan, and Nicole (the CEC)--were absolutely incredible. They provided top-tier medical care for our girl, but what I appreciated most was how they handled my wife and me. We were in a total state of panic, and they stayed calm, kept us informed, and treated us with so much empathy. It's rare to find a team that can balance high-level emergency medicine with such genuine bedside manner. Last week, after getting home from an evening event, we noticed our 17-year-old Chiweenie acting weird. To save the gore, it was apparent in the next couple of hours that he was declining very fast. Knowing he would not make it through the night and fearing him being in pain, we looked for an open overnight vet, VEG came up and had a really good reputation, and I've heard of them before from other friends and colleagues. Not too far away (Pflugerville) so we drove over to the Arboretum at 1 AM. My wife was afraid of saying goodbye to our old man in a sterile room with a metal table... We walked in and it's a very different experience! Everything is right in front of you. They knew we were coming in, ushered us into a quiet room with two chairs and a shag carpet and dim lights. It was extremely comfortable and inviting and calm. Caitlin was our technician that evening, she was an absolute rockstar! Very sympathetic and professional. Even though we've experienced a loss with a close friend's dog, they still made sure we understood everything that was coming ahead. They gave us plenty of time to say goodbye and we're very supportive during the process. When we were ready, the doctor came in and visited with us and put our old man to rest. He lived a good, long life, outside of expiring very quickly that evening, this is the best possible way for him to have gone out. Wellllll. ,!! Not the first time I have used these knowledge, friendly, accommodating, handy, doctors, and place. This could be my 4th time or 3rd time, but I do know it's always on a weekend. Our pets are our kids and when do they get sick or injured??? On weekends. Our Coconut once more ripped her nail almost completely off. She and Buddy who lives on the other side of the fence are always running back and forth and peeking at one another, oh yes running and barking as well. So Saturday she did it again, got her one nail caught in the slats of the fence. The good, great doctors were able to cut it off as far in as they could go. The nail is split inside but will grow out. On Monday she would not put her paw down and I couldn't touch it. It was all wrapped up good but I was fearful of taking the bandage off soooooo back to our friendly VEG ER for pets again. The doctor took the wrap off and said it looks great and healing but just like humans, the second day it hurts the worst. He was so reassessing, just keep up the medication and wear the "cone".... Today, day 5 and she is walking , even trying to run on it and just about finished with the medicine. Sleeps well, and just about to be my tom-boy, girl puppy again. They were so kind and helpful when my dog was sick over the holiday weekend. They let you stay with your pet through the testing/procedures which helped keep him calm. They were upfront and clear about costs and procedures and gave me options. They also clearly laid out what to look out for at home and when to either bring him back or take him to his regular vet. VEG was there for my pup Nova and I when we needed them most. She had been vomiting, refusing food, and has a history of eating things she shouldn't, so I brought her in late at night. The staff worked patiently with me to avoid sedation with my cattle dog (if you know, you know). They were able to complete the necessary diagnostics and confirm that she did have an obstruction. Since we were there until around 8am, the team even set up a room with a futon so I could get some rest while staying with her, which meant a lot during such a stressful night. VEG first contacted my regular vet, who unfortunately wouldn't take her that morning, but they went above and beyond by proactively reaching out to another fantastic local vet who could perform the surgery (this was done to help reduce my costs, they were willing to perform the surgery). That support was incredibly appreciated and honestly something I would have struggled to coordinate on my own in the moment. Nova's surgery went well, and I brought her right back to VEG afterward for post-op care. I brought my laptop and they set me up a room so I could work from there, which greatly reduced the stress on her (and eased my mind). I truly believe this team played a huge role in her speedy recovery, as she' having healthy bowel movements just 3 days post-op and showing minimal discomfort. Wanted to be extremely annoying that they took so long to give my dog fluids because people kept coming in and so they would pause our meeting go check out another dog and then come back to me and this happened like six times so it made an easy simple visit turned into like a three hour ordeal. It was ridiculous. I will say that they did respect my wishes and only do the essential things for my dog, but they were trying to sell me x-rays and bloodwork that was unnecessary which would've been a $1500 bill and I told him to do the necessary got her dog food and it was 350 bucks or so which was already too much money but she was fine after that so if you go there, don't opt in for their stupid x-rays and up charge bullshit. read more

I brought a sick, feral kitten to VEG and left heartbroken. Despite bringing a fecal sample and clearly explaining his recent pink eye, Giardia, and eating bird seed, no bloodwork or diagnostic tests were done. Still, they insisted it was FIP and recommended euthanasia without any proof. The vet was cold, unkind, and overconfident. My kitten was shaved and poked repeatedly, then deemed "too small" for a needle. I declined euthanasia, but the paperwork still frames that as the expected course, and I was billed $500 for basic vitals. Thankfully, I went to CityVet Urgent Care, where a cat specialist actually listened. For $1500 less, I had answers in 45 minutes. Today, my kitten is healthy and playful. VEG almost ended his life based on assumption, not care. I would not trust them with any animal. read more

I had the misfortune that both of my dogs ended up needing urgent medical attention within one week. Our family's vet was not available and we ended up coming here. I'm really glad we did. The doctors and staff here are incredibly kind and caring, and they tell you a lot of detailed information regarding your pet's care. The facility appears to be state-of-the-art and there was no delay in getting our dogs seen. For one of my dogs, the news was not good but the doctor got her pain meds right away and I ended up taking her home. She passed early the next morning but she was in her favorite place in the back yard with her family around, the people that loved her. My other dog had to stay a couple days at the hospital and the opportunity to be able to stay overnight in a comfortable room with my dog is unheard of. He is on the mend now at home and back to his happy, bouncy self. I am grateful for the care and consideration provided by the team at VEG. Highly highly recommended. read more

We could not be happier with our choice in VEG to treat our boy, Colby. After he became lethargic and uninterested in food, my husband brought Colby into VEG, where Dr. Colby (hah!) quickly diagnosed a ruptured splenic mass. His explanation of our options and the outlook was both direct and compassionate. We opted for surgery and couldn't be more pleased with the recovery process. Colby can be anxious at the vet/away from us, so being able to visit at any time was so comforting. The staff was open to adopting all of our tips on how to work with Colby best, and let us help during procedures so he was more cooperative. Dr. Sarberry was our AM doc, and Dr. Imma was our PM doc. Both were standouts for their compassionate touch. I especially appreciated Dr. Imma being willing to go as slow as needed for Colby to be comfortable during procedures. We also had Jordan and Megan as nurses, again, both standouts who truly cared for our baby and his needs. No one wants to have a pet in the ER, but if you have to, VEG is the way to go. read more

It's good to know these folks are there in north Austin when you need them. Our canine had a paw injury and was in a lot of pain. We could have waited as he was not bleeding etc but for us no way we were going to let our guy be uncomfortable on a sat night and wait till Monday. We have dealt with emergency hospitals for pets in the past with mixed results health and financially speaking. They have an open concept ER and do immediate triage. They assessed gave a treatment plan previewed the cost and we moved forward. They provided immediate pain relief which the urgent clinics may not be able to do. They identified the source of the injury, cleaned him up, bandaged him prescribed NSAIDS and an E collar and we were gone. Three vets on staff. Lovely folks. Well staffed. Highly recommend if needed as an alternate to the hospitals for acute issues like injury, dehydration etc. thanks to the staff. read more

My rescue dog was inadequately assessed for respiratory distress and vomiting due to her aggression. We were left waiting for 3 hours for her to become "friendlier." She died on my kitchen floor less than 8 hours after being discharged from this facility. Her life mattered, just not to this doctor or this facility. The medical director expressed her condolences, blamed me for not taking the offered sedation and complete workup, and refused to take any responsibility. I will never go back here, nor would I recommend anyone with a less than "perfect" dog go here either. read more

We brought our chameleon in late, she was had a large yellow spot, lethargic, not eating or drinking. We were told they had someone familiar with chameleons, I do not think they did. Sadly the next morning we woke up and she was extremely worse. We went back in and sadly she passed away. They were all nice, but this place is best for dogs and cats with issues. Dr. Jemmott was great with our dog. Our dog was momentarily unable to walk and disoriented with his lips curled. Thankfully, once we arrived at the ER, he was miraculously healed. After boarding for four nights during the Thanksgiving holiday, Fiona seemed to have a nasty cold, and hives. We were going to wait until Monday morning to see her normal vet, but she was so miserable. I decided to take her in. The clinic and the staff couldn't have been more amazing. Even with several emergencies, we were seen immediately on arrival, had a treatment plan and estimate within 15 minutes, did all the blood work, got an injection, and we're out at the door in an hours time. It is an emergency room, so the cost is going to be higher than your normal vet, but getting the care your fur baby needs makes it worth every penny read more

This was an impressive vet hospital experience. They took me right in, no waiting. They did the intake paperwork on the fly. After seeing my dog did not have an emergency, they made sure I was comfortable and asked if I needed anything to drink. They checked on me frequently as we waited for the doctor. They did x-rays and a blood panel. Nothing was urgent for my dog, and he got better on his own. But I am glad I took him in to double check and make sure nothing major was going on. They were incredibly caring, and explained everything. They billed me via my cell phone, which was convenient. And they followed up to see how my dog was doing the next day. Taking your fur babe to an ER in an urgent situation just sucks. But the team at VEG was amazing. I walked in & was immediately greeted as they began treating my very ill cat, Max. Dr. Pearson and staff talked with me about treatment options, gave me printed out info on said options. They sent initial records to my vet of 20+ years before 8am & encouraged me to talk through their suggested options with him. I did and my vet echoed what VEG docs had said. My cat had to stay 36 hours & in that time they sent me pics, gave me frequent call updates, and worked with me on what I could afford. I will say the cost was extraordinary. Way, way more than I could have ever imagined. But I had no other option than to save my boy. Few private vet practices offer acute care these days. I feel for those who simply can't pay. The entire staff loves and cares about the work they do. I didn't get all of the team members' names, but I worked very closely with Dr. Josie and Monica. They both shared endless compassion and patience, while also being urgent about the direness of my dog Cooper's injury. They were up front about their suspicions of it being a spinal injury but also celebrated the small wins with us, such as him reacting to stimulation in his hind legs. They included me in every part of his diagnosis and often came to check in on how we were doing and just to sit with Cooper. They established a referral to a neurologist within the area, and we were able to get Cooper checked in around 3:00am for same day treatment. I could also tell that they took deep gratitude to being thanked for their incredible work - they clearly love the animals that they tend to, and they shared the emotional rollercoaster with me and my fiancé that night. Cooper is on the road to recovery thanks to the efforts of VEG in the Arboretum. I could not recommend their practice enough. read more

A week ago Sunday I had to put my 16 year old dog to sleep. I brought him to Veterinary Emergency Group on Research Blvd in Austin and I am forever grateful for way in which I was treated. Dr Pearson is truly an angel. My dog was brought in after he swallowed a whole 6 inch toy. X rays showed that the toy was lodged in his esophagus and needed to be removed in order for him to survive. Dr Pearson let us know that the chances of removing the toy were slim due to how wedged it was and the chances of rupturing his esophagus were high but she never gave up on him. She was able to work a miracle and was able to remove it. Dr Pearson was supposed to be off that day at 7pm but stayed till after 2 am to remove this toy... if that does not show you her dedication to helping animals then i don't know what will. My gf and I were also on vacation out of state at the time of this incident and Dr Pearson called us with updates frequently to keep us in the loop. I would recommend this place to anyone. I called the vet and talked to the Dr. Told him what was going on with my moms pup and he said to bring him in, right when we walked in the door two techs greeted us, walked us over to an exam table and immediately started to work on Frankie. Frankie was very very sick and every single one of the staff told us everything that they were doing, everything that was going on with Frankie. We called ahead and asked some questions before deciding together to bring our puppy in. They listened to our concerns and did a thorough check of our puppy. I am so glad to have found this place. Austin has very few 24 hour vet ERs. I've been to majority of them, as my older cat had a lot of challenging medical issues, but had not been to this place yet. I took my young girl Winnie in due to extreme vomiting and fast breathing. You're immediately put into a private room which isn't something I've experienced before. Winnie was able to roam around the room while we were there, and it made the experience less stressful than a traditional waiting room. Dr. Kiefer was great with Winnie. We saw him right when we arrived for an initial assessment, and then a plan was set in place for testing and treatment. Winnie loved the doctor and even let him hold her like a baby. He's definitely a cat whisperer! I hope I don't ever need their services again, but it's reassuring knowing this place exists if something were to occur again. read more

When you have a pet, they are family. We took our mastff to see Dr. Nina on Presidents Day. He had Wobblers Syndrome and over the course of 48 hours he just tanked. Nina was honest with us, which is what I needed. She advised me that I didn't need to spend a ton of money on testing, it wouldn't be ethical to do that. She stayed with us in the room and talked to Max. She explained the process in great detail for our older son on the spectrum to fully understand. There was no time limit for us to be with Max, and order him pizza. She truly was a gem and the best vet I've ever met. She emotionally connects with her pet patients and understands she is also serving the pet parents. While a sad day for our family, Dr. Nina made it 100% easier. read more

Couldn't be happier with my experience today with Veterinary Emergency Group! Pulling up this page and seeing negative reviews regarding payment amounts are shocking to me, as I experienced such a positive experience in that regard (but did attend at 2 PM, if that makes a difference). My cat has been showing symptoms of a UTI off and on, so I brought him in quickly when I noticed them resurface. They immediately attended to my cat (like so immediately it was a bit shocking haha) and got me into a private room for further examination. They understandably wanted to run a lot of tests and things to determine the issue, which was originally estimated around $800. I explained that was unfortunately out of my budget, and due to other reasons, I wasn't concerned it was as deep as it could be. They asked my price range, went back to discuss, and came back with a plan where they removed the not-as-necessary tests (& explained why), as well as comped the ultrasound, fitting it into the top range of my budget. I was so surprised & relived for them to offer that! After deciding everything and understanding pricing, they worked with my cat in the room with me so I could see what was on the ultrasound & understand how they planned to continue with treatment plans. I asked waaaaay too many questions, & they were so nice, funny, & understanding, that I never felt weird about needing further clarification as I have at former emergency vets. Ethan was really kind, a good listener, & was very understanding when my cat began to get too stressed over the ultrasound situation. Dr. Kiefer was really easy to talk to, answered all of my questions very clearly, & never seemed irritated by me needing some things repeated or explained differently. I didn't feel pushed out of there or rushed at all- everyone was super kind & made me feel understood in everything I was feeling. Even when I just initially called to understand the process, they were so attentive, & the fact you're speaking to a vet immediately is just incredible. 10/10 would recommend them based on this experience! Hoping to not need their assistance in the future, but would trust them with my baby if I did read more

Spent over $1000 for them to tell me my dog was in heart failure when she wasn't. Traumatized me and my family for no reason. Absolutely incompetent and I'm glad I listened to my gut and left when they wanted to keep my dog overnight. Absolute criminals and have no idea what they are doing. Save your money. read more

Our cat had been attacked by either a dog or a coyote and he was in bad shape with a few puncture wounds and a fractured mandibular symphsis. Dr. Gutierrez and all of the staff were so caring and SO fabulous in taking care of Toby. Dr. Gutierrez consulted with a feline dentist and really made sure she worked out the best treatment for his jaw. She sutured his jaw with a strong stitch (so we don't have to see a dentist!) and we went home after being there for a few hours. I can report today that he's doing wonderfully and is back to normal. We were in a total emergency situation and I didn't feel like they were overcharging me for the services they provided compared to some other places in town. I would absolutely go here again if I ever needed emergency pet care. read more

I came to VEG around midnight this past week after already spending an awful 5 hours at Pet Specialist of Austin on Guadalupe just before. I had been in and out of Vets/animal hospitals all day trying to get answers for my doodle who had become very I'll very fast. Coming to VEG was the first time I truly felt seen and heard regarding my pet's condition. They took us in immediately and even the doctor was physically next to my dog within moments of coming through the door. The staff there was super friendly and clearly had a love for animals. This was sadly certainly not my experience at Pet Specialists earlier that day. The layout of the initial inside of this hospital is also open so you don't feel like you are being forgotten about behind closed doors. The staff are all easily accessible and they even offered me water/snacks. The doctor listened to my whole day's experience and prior tests/labs that had been done and was able to help give a proper diagnosis and begin treatment on my pet promptly. They set me up with the proper at home care plan and my dog began to get better quickly over the next few days. Thanks so much to the awesome staff and doctor who helped us beyond words.
