When we first checked in to the hospital

The bad review is not for the customer service. The staff, doctors and technicians were all kind. But we went in because my girl Zoey had bloody diarrhea, and after 24 hours and $2200 later, she was sent home saying it was "just stress". Or stress colitis, whatever. Clearly from the picture it's not just stress. At least before we went in she was going outside to go on her own, but when we came home from the hospital, poo was just spewing out of her uncontrollably and I felt so bad but I had to crate her because it was getting everywhere. I just don't understand how she came out of the hospital MUCH WORSE than when she went in! Especially after that fat bill. My baby was SO SAD and miserable, and I don't know what to do but I'm definitely not taking her back to AVES. I feel like the LEAST they could have done is refer her to a GI/internal medicine specialist, but no. They just shrugged and wrote it off as stress and said, "at least there's no more blood?" I'm super sad and disappointed.

Raced all the way from home this morning. Maybe 25-30 mins depending on traffic. It was record time as we were disheveled; rushed through front doors at the vet. Seizure happened the entire drive over. All attendants were terrific as they approached us and got our pup through the emergency room into the back where they can treat her. Staff was courageous and gave their 110%. A great big Thank you for all that you do for our pets.

I was referred to AVES by our local vet and currently have a pet being treated by the oncology team there. Dr. Stein and the team of technicians were amazing from our first appointment. Before meeting the team I was incredibly nervous and extremely worried about my pet's diagnosis but after leaving I was at ease in knowing I could trust the care we would be receiving. Dr. Stein's demeanor and knowledge was an immediate comfort and I am so happy we received the referral to AVES. thank you!

Pic from AVES of my baby.

I would give zero stars if I could, but the one star definitely goes to office and tech staff. I will start by saying my experience with Dr. Dolan has been aweful. I was hopeful after the initial visit, but then I never saw or heard from Dr. Dolan again despite multiple requests to have him come out during my dog's visits or call my husband or I to discuss the treatment plan. $3500 later and I still don't know what to do with my dog and still haven't heard from Dr. Dolan. This experience was nothing short of emotionally traumatizing for me, and my dog had to go to the ER once and responded poorly to half of her treatments. This all happened within the last couple of months. (Sept-Oct 2025). I also requested on multiple occasions to speak with an office manager, whom I was told would call me and never did. Also, it would normally take days to hear back from Oncology, yet when I didn't immediately pay my bill I had them texting me at 2AM asking when I was going to pay. 2 a.m. HUGE shoutout to Charlotte, Elena, and Rebecca. There was one other lady at the front desk that was awesome, but I never got her name. These individuals helped make this experience bearable. Forever grateful to you ladies.

austin emergency & specialty took such amazing care of my dog when he fractured his toe. from the moment we walked in, i could feel that this was a clinic run with real care, efficiency, and heart. everything was clean, calm, and organized and everyone on staff just radiated skill and compassion. every person i spoke to from the front desk to the techs to the vets was kind, clear, and present. they took time to explain exactly what was happening, what the plan was, and what to expect, and somehow made a really stressful situation feel manageable. i could tell my dog was being looked after by people who not only knew what they were doing, but who truly loved animals. i left feeling deep gratitude - not just for the medical care, but for the energy they carried throughout the process of caring for him from beginning to end. highly recommend this place if you ever find yourself in a petmergency. they made something heavy feel much lighter.

Her unprofessional opinion of owner and record

Dr. Eleanor Brown was very unprofessional, rude, condescending, and completely lacked compassion for our 16 year old cat. She wanted to put him through multiple tests that were unnecessary because we had already uncovered what his underlying problem was. We simply needed her to address whether or not we needed him on additional medication. I am very familiar with CKD and she kept trying to treat me like I did not know what I was talking about. Running a bunch of tests on an elderly cat is not improving their quality of life.

Visiting Jax after hours in the hospital. Thankful AVES is so understanding of after hours visits

My 16 year old dog swallowed my hearing aid whole! Thankfully the battery wasn't in it. And of course, like all pets do, it happened on the weekend when my vet was closed so I quickly googled ER vets near me and it directed me to VEG ER. We got there and they were triaging other patients but immediately came in to do intake and then they did and x-ray of my dog, Theo. The hearing aid was in his small intestine and they were going to have to operate because it was causing an obstruction. They went over the procedure with me and were very patient and kind with my questions. At one point, I had to use my phone and realized it was dying and they quickly provided a charger for me to borrow. There was another dog having surgery so it would be a few hours to get Theo in so they setttled him in with an IV and some anti naseau meds and I headed home to sleep. The doctor said he would call me with updates. At 1:30am Dr. Wilson called and said that before they prepped Theo for surgery he decided to do another x-ray and yay, the hearing aid had traveled on it's own to its colon and I got to bring Theo home and lets just say, that the hearing aid came out the opposite way that it went it. I really appreciate that Dr. Wilson made sure that the surgery was truly necessary, especially for a dog that is 16 and has a heart murmur. The whole staff was great and I told them all thank you and I hope to never see them again! I can't recommend them highly enough!

Dr. Colby Kiefer and his entire team went above and beyond in caring for one of the best dogs I've ever had. My husky was getting older, and unfortunately, it was her time. We knew walking through those doors just how serious the situation was, and I believe Dr. Kiefer knew as well. However, not once did he rush us, pressure us, or make us feel pressured into making one of the hardest decisions a pet owner will ever face. Instead, he showed an incredible amount of compassion, patience, professionalism, knowledge, and genuine kindness during an extremely difficult time. What stood out to me most was not only his medical expertise, but the way he treated both our dog as well as us. He understood that she wasn't just a pet to us. She was a huge part of our family, and saying goodbye was never going to be easy. I sincerely hope we never have to meet again under circumstances like these, but if I ever find myself in a similar situation, I couldn't imagine having anyone other than Dr. Kiefer and his amazing team helping guide us through it. Thank you, Dr. Kiefer, and everyone working in the emergency room that night, for the compassion, respect, and kindness you showed not only to my wonderful dog, but to our family as well. I know the work you do isn't easy, and I can only imagine how emotionally challenging it must be at times. But please know that the care you provide and the way you treat families during some of their most difficult moments truly make a lasting difference. What you do matters more than you may ever realize. I will never forget the kindness you showed us that night, and I will always be incredibly appreciative and grateful. Thank you, Dr. Kiefer and your entire team, for everything you do!

CVCA Cardiac Care For Pets - My dog, going home in her pretty 24-hour holter monitor.

CVCA Cardiac Care For Pets

The location itself is easy to get to. The cost was honestly lower than what I was expecting. The consult with the echocardiogram was around $600. This is actually cheaper than the last visit to our regular vet. It was cheaper than the AVES emergency bill. I also realized that the reason our original AVES quote was so high was because CVCA is closed on weekends. Our dog would wait over the weekend for the cardiologist at CVCA to look at him on Monday. The cost of staying at AVES overnight was more than the actual cardiologist consult. The staff member that we talked to during intake (Sorry, I don't remember their name) was very polite on the phone & was very good to our dog in person. I got the impression that they enjoy their job very much & showed compassion towards our furbaby. Dr. Bordelon seemed kind & compassionate as well. More importantly, they seemed very knowledgeable. I feel like they cared about our dog. It turned out that they couldn't do much in the way of treatment, as the main problem was not related to his heart, but he was referred to an oncologist. They explained why they suspected cancer and the possible next steps. Knowing what could possibly happen next was important, since the question after getting diagnostics done is: "What's next for my dog?" They were pretty calm and they were able to answer all of our questions. Even if it wasn't good news, and there wasn't anything else they could do, I feel like they did their best. We got a copy of the echocardiogram results & evaluation notes promptly through e-mail, and they coordinated with the other vets for our dog's care. When our dog passed, CVCA sent us an e-mail. This felt like an extra step of care, since CVCA only saw him once. Our regular vet who saw him yearly for annual exams hasn't said anything, lol. I actually never met Dr. Bordelon in person, due to COVID-19 procedures, but the fact they were able to deliver this type of service & communicate over the phone is amazing. I feel fortunate that there are board certified vet cardiologists here in Austin. At least our dog was seen by a doctor with further specialization & experience. In case somebody is reading Yelp because they have a pet with suspected heart problems, I recommend CVCA.
