From the moment we arrived, the experience was disappointing. The veterinary assistant greeted us in the waiting room and asked what was going on with our two dogs. We explained our concerns in detail and asked for advice on how to move forward. She mentioned medication as a possibility, which we had never considered before, but we said if it was appropriate, we would be open to it. When Dr. Boyd came in, he immediately asked which dog was being seen first. We said Cosmo, and his first question was whether we had seen a trainer for Cosmo's anxiety. We were caught off guard, as we were there seeking a proper diagnosis for what might be going on with our dog. We mentioned he had some training at PetSmart, but Dr. Boyd cut us off, dismissing PetSmart trainers as "not real trainers" and "just employees." Without asking us any meaningful background questions about Cosmo aside from what diet he was on Dr. Boyd told us "we can't just give him medication," even though we had never asked for medication. That idea came from his own assistant. He continued to talk over us, repeatedly implying we only wanted "drugs" for our dogs, which was both inaccurate and frustrating. We left feeling unheard, judged, and dismissed. The lack of listening, the assumptions made about our intentions, and the unwillingness to gather basic information about our pet before giving advice were unacceptable. I recently adopted a cat who requires daily medicine and needed to get her a refill. I called this practice and they made me an appointment within two days. The facility itself is very easy to find and access, it's about a mile off 183. For a vet's office, the waiting room was exceptionally clean with lots of comfy chairs. The staff were incredibly friendly when we arrived and we were seen within 10 minutes of our appointment time despite a few other guests also waiting. The doctor's were gentle with Dite and didn't waste time any time examining her. They even trimmed her nails for me and gave me some great advice about managing her weight and teeth (which I didn't know was a concern ahh). I received her refill same-day and was in and out within 45 minutes. I'm definitely impressed with this practice and will be returning! read more

I've discovered this place following my vet, Dr Weaver, who was working to "Pflugerville Animal Hospital" - one of the best (And the most charming with its Norman Rockwell's touch) Vet Hospital where I ever been - but unfortunately sold to VCA around 2 years ago... what totally destroyed the spirit of the place. Northwest Austin Vet Center looks like any vet center but the team has "The Spirit". The spirit of real animal lovers who give their best for your loved ones. One star for rude, unhelpful staff who apparently don't like their jobs. I never got to see the vet because the face of their business was rude and unhelpful. I tried to schedule an appointment at the Northwest Austin Vet off 2222 (who had cared for my cat years ago), but somehow got the number from Google for the Northwest Austin Vet on Jollyville. Not the worst mistake in the world, and I am sure I wasn't the first. We arrived early at the other NW Austin Vet for our 11:00 appointment. After we figured out the confusion, I called this clinic to tell them I would be a few minutes late due to the confusion. It was 11:06 when I called about an 11:00 appointment. The receptionist bluntly said they would need to reschedule to the next day because we were already 20 minutes late. (Again, it was 11:06 when she said that--my GPS car clock and iPhone clock were both right in front on me). I said I wasn't going to reschedule due to a very predictable business name confusion. She put me on hold as we drove, and the office manager answered and said they were fully booked but perhaps they could fit us in if we waited until after the 11:30 appointment finished. When I told him the GPS said I would arrive at 11:16, he said they would fit us in. I thanked him and said I didn't think it would take a full half hour, anyway because the vet just needed to take a look and perhaps take a quick biopsy. We drove there and arrived at 11:16. The waiting area was empty. I identified myself and said I had called and wanted to get in quickly so they were not thrown behind schedule. The lady at the desk sneered and casually slapped a handwritten form onto the counter that repeated all the information that they had already. I told her she had that information, but she said they needed me to write it down. Instead of arguing, I filled out the form. They the receptionist spent five minutes more handwriting into the new chart what was already on her computer screen, reflecting what I had told them was the problem (a lip wart) on the phone. As she did so, the previous appointment came out and the vet came out to speak to his staff briefly. So we wouldn't have been seen on time at 11:00, anyway, which made me wonder what all the fuss was about. Then she demanded that I look up my dog's immunization record from another vet before their vet saw my dog (which was unrelated to the lip wart we needed checked). I couldn't find it, so she asked for the other vet's information so she could call them for it. After twelve minutes and while I watched her slowly hand write the last of the information I told them when I made the appointment, I calmly said, "I thought this was time sensitive and you needed to get me in and out before the next appointment shows up. Why are we taking all this time filling out handwritten forms that repeat everything you already have on your computer?" It was now 11:28, and the appointment time had expired. She snapped at me, "Well, you were already late, and you don't have your immunization records. So now you are going to need to wait. Didn't I tell you to bring them when you made the appointment?" I got the strong sense that she had gone slowly so as to "prove her point" to me that we needed to reschedule, and she was going to make sure I waited until the 11:30 appointment showed up and finished. It wasn't just what she said, but the way she said it. Her tone, body language, expressions, and attitude was the tipping point. I no longer felt comfortable trusting my dog there. Instead of arguing, I thanked her and told my son we were leaving, and we walked out. The office manager saw me leaving. He tried to apologize and stop me from leaving, but I was done. If that is the face of their business, then I don't feel comfortable trusting my pet to their care. The other frustration that made me post a review is that operating two vet clinics named "Northwest Austin Veterinary Clinic/Center/Hospital" in Northwest Austin is really confusing. My son even exclaimed as we drove into the second clinic (when he saw their sign) "that's almost the exact same name! I thought you were joking!" One of the two stole the name from the other, and I don't care which one it was. They should get together and resolve this trademark/business name confusion, because I am sure customers get confused all the time. I felt like I was in McDougles, and they were professing indignance that I mistook them for a McDonald's. ("See... We don't have the Golden Arches, we have the golden ARCS!"). At the very least, they should understand that obvious customer confusion and not pretend as if *I* was the first customer to ever confuse the two. And not cop an attitude about a predictable scheduling error due to that confusion, when the delay in my getting to the other NW Austin Vet wouldn't even have set them behind schedule, in the first place. read more

I usually brought my beloved Collies in to see Dr. Weaver, who was NOT there that day. I had to see Dr. Boyd instead toward the end of the day and time to go home. Krista, my beloved Collie who saw me through breast cancer, was vomiting uncontrollably at 2pm that day, so I tried to help her. Dr. Boyd did NOT even take her temperature, never even looked in her throat or took vitals. Instead, he did the "symptom thing" instead of the "let's get to the bottom of this thing" and prescribed cerenia to stop "symptoms" instead of get to the bottom of it or offer further tests. Dr. Walden has cared for my dogs for 25 years. We have also taken him the occasional stray. He consistently displays skill, compassion, and integrity. One time we brought him a tiny puppy that had collapsed with parvo. He was honest with us that our chances were less than fifty-fifty, but he worked a miracle. That puppy lived a long, happy life. We have seen the other vets here on occasion. Each of them have been excellent in their own way. Their pricing for services is competitive. The technicians are competent and dedicated. Their standards are high. They remember my dogs and care for them with love. If you have been to a clinic where this is not true, you know how important this is. I have known Dr Weaver for 14 years but even with a good Dr a bad staff that does not like animals is not a good match. This office has too many patients and too little staff. I had our first vet visit this past week. Dr. Weaver was very kind, seemed knowledgeable and took lots of time with us. I could tell he really cares about his work. The vet tech was horrible. We entered the room for us and my dog was taken out back for what I assumed was for her weight to be taken. She came back with blood on her leg and was licking it in a way that would indicate she was uncomfortable. My dog is a calm, laid back 8 year old girl. She's a certified therapy dog. She received 3 vaccines and 15 minutes of checking over her physical body where she had to stay still. After, they were doing an investigative procedure in the room with me there. After 10 minutes of poking my girl you could tell she was becoming uncomfortable and needed a break - understandably. The vet went to grab something from outback which I thought was a perfect time to give her a break since he was having some trouble with the tiny procedure. My dog was trying to get away from this vet tech who then grabbed her by the collar (placing her entire hand under the martingale collar) and pulling her by the collar server times screaming at her "STOP! YOU STOP IT!" This obviously didn't help the situation. She tried to get away from the tech again and the situation repeated itself. The tech then said to my dog, " you can try to get away from me all you want but I will always win." I then intervened and went over by my dog and calmed her down and gave her a break that she needed. She then went and hid under the chairs in the room for the remainder of the visit. I also want to mention that this procedure meant cutting open her skin to the point it needed to be numbed and taking a sample to look at under a microscope. Dr. Weaver did NOT wear gloves while performing is procedure. He did not wash his hands before cutting her open either. I don't feel like I need to insert my thoughts or comments here because the facts of what happened are enough. I won't ever be back to this vet. read more

I chose the Northwest Austin Veterinary Center because of the rave reviews on their site. I wish I had known better. I had a terrible experience my first time there and will not be returning. I brought in my cat who had blood in her urine. They took some of her urine for a urinalysis, and wanted to also do a blood panel given she's a senior cat who's at risk of kidney disease. It's worth stating for context that I've had another cat who would get extremely stressed at the vet and would need gabapentin to make it through a visit. That is not this cat. She's 15 years old and has NEVER been anything but mellow getting bloodwork or doing any kind of testing in the past. She goes into curl-up-in-a-ball-and-hide-my-face mode when she's stressed. But today, I heard her yelping over and over in the back room and they gave her back to me with blood streaming down her legs (they didn't even bandage it!) and said I'd need to give her gabapentin and come back tomorrow for them to get the bloodwork. Attached is a photo I took *after* I spent 15 minutes cleaning her up with a wet washcloth at home. It was way worse when they gave her back to me. On top of it, when the vet tech came into the room at the end of the visit, he walked in and said "Where's your cat?" like she should have been in the room. I thought he was making a joke. But he wasn't. He then got really embarrassed and talked about how short-staffed they were. He then went and got her from the back room. They forgot about her? Lastly, they were going to do an x-ray in addition to the blood work to check for stones, and also give her flea prevention medication because she had a couple flea bites. They forgot about the x-ray and the flea medication entirely. I will NOT be taking her back to get the bloodwork tomorrow, even though I've already paid for it. I don't know if it's lack of judgment, experience, basic skills, or what (probably a combination), but what vet or tech continues poking and prodding with blood streaming everywhere, while a cat's yelping and trying to get away? And then gives them back to their owner without even a bandage?! I'm sure there are good doctors here, but I just can't in good faith bring her back after this experience. read more

Admittedly, Dr. Boyd is the only vet there we will let touch our Danes. We have had some run ins with other vets there that seriously displeased me. We also had a negative experience before our youngest Dane's neutering. We thought we had made arrangements ahead of time at the previous visit in regards to IVs and blood screening. But the day of the surgery they asked again in a tone that made us very guilty for not doing the expensive extras. I felt like they played on our emotions to get extra money out of us. So why the four stars? Dr. Boyd is absolutely fantastic with our Danes, Trooper and General Beauregard. He is thorough, we never feel rushed and he listens. I know there are charts with notes, but we made an unscheduled visit one morning and he was available. He remembered many details from previous visits and there was no time for him to study notes before the examination. I am not saying he has an eidetic memory, but remembering such details show how much he cares. The interns or support staff during the examinations have been great as well. I wish I could remember names! I would highly recommend Dr. Boyd for your dog's health care. read more

I decided to try this vet as it is nearby, but I will not be going back. My cat weighs 6 pounds, almost 19 years old and they were restraining her unnecessarily. They prescribed medicine, for vomiting when she has not been vomiting. I actually had them stop mid exam, the pulling the tugging the squeezing of her abdomen could have been done more gently. Zero communication to me about what they were actually trying to do. Only when I asked them to stop did the vet explain why or what she was doing. While waiting to pay I saw them clipping a corgi-puppy's nails with three people holding him and pulling him. Totally unnecessary he was just a puppy! read more

This vet center tries to do elective services and push unnecessary pet meds to make money off pet parents dishonestly. Dr. Dunn is nice, but prescribed unnecessary products, ear cleaning solution and itching pills. My puppy is not an ear infection prone breed and has never had any ear problems in the year we have had her and we figured out by ourselves that her scratching was due to a mild fish allergy, so a change of food was the real solution. The front staff is friendly enough, but don't go here because they will push you to purchase more products than your pet needs and charge overpriced fees for products/services. read more

Could not be any worse! I'm not one inclined to give terrible reviews and am generally easy to please, but never has anything been more deserving of a 1 Our vet has the worst bedside manner I could imagine. Our 11 month old Corgi has never so much as made a growl at a person or shown any sign of aggression. He's constantly around new people, dogs, and places, so he can handle adversity. Visit #1 - heartworm checkup: The assistants hold him and he is fine and comfortable. The vet comes in and before petting the dog, introducing herself to him, she starts poking at swelling on his jaw. His initial reaction is not a bite or a growl, but just to jump and try to get away because some unknown person is jabbing at a hurt spot. The vet reaction is to ask us if he's attacked anyone and suggests puppy school (which he's already been to). She mentions that we should socialize him. I should mention that she should learn how to approach a dog, but don't. $130 later, we're out the door with heartworm medication and unnecessary advice. Visit #2 - Heartworm check and question about liquidey poo: Again, the assistants have no problem with handling the dog. Vet comes into the room and starts jabbing our dog in the stomach. He naturally squirms to get away as he's had a stomach ache on and off for the past couple of days. We get another suggestion for puppy school (still already been) and questioned if he's attacked anyone (still a ridiculous question and still no). He has had a normal stomach ache which we just asked about, but didn't request any special treatment other than the heartworm check. She suggests an x-ray for back problems (we just took him to Auditorium shores the day before where he swam, jumped, and showed ABSOLUTELY no signs of pain). So we suggest against an x-ray. Shortly after, she takes the dog to get an x-ray after we had said he didn't need one. X-rays of course return with nothing shown. She says we should give him bland food (which we had been making ourselves before, and we walk out the door with over a $300 bill for what should have been a heartworm checkup. Sorry for the rant, but I cannot express this enough...choose another vet. If their location is convenient and you still want to go to the clinic, try to stay away from Dr. Boston. read more

We did not have a pet for some time, but over two years ago we received a male kitten we named Squeakie because of his inability to give out a full meow at that age. Having lived in that area and having a passing familiarity with the facility, we decided this might be a good place to start, even though its quite a drive from Manor. We had Squeakie checked out and vaccinated for all the usual things, and when he was 4-1/2 months old, took him there to be neutered and declawed. Further visits included the basics, vaccine boosters and check ups. This past weekend our Squeakie did not come home and we were crushed thinking something terrible had happened to him, and it did!! He stays around the immediate neighborhood and away from the street, plus he's never more than 2 hrs from checking in, so we usually don't worry about him being outside too much. He stumbled home the next morning looking like he had had a fight with a Mack truck and lost. His left eye was swollen shut and his jaw all scratched and busted up. He was having equilibrium problems as you might imagine, and so forth. NAVC has no weekend facilities, so we took him to the Emergency Vet Hospital on 183 where he was checked over and it was recommended we see his regular vet within 48 hrs. Having lost my job 4 months ago, money is tight, so I called to speak with Squeak's regular DVM about what could be done, and could some provisions be made under the circumstances . I waited 5 hrs for Dr. Boyd to call me back. Strike 1. Being his regular DVM, I asked if he had looked over the paperwork sent to them by the Emergency DVM. The answer I got was, "I glanced at it." Strike 2. So I told him my sad tale, and asked if they could make some financial provisions? The answer I got, "Bring him in when you can afford it. Would you like to talk to the front desk?" Strike 3. I hung up. Are you kidding me? Bring him in when you can afford it? I was never that happy about their charges, but in better financial times would pay them. I believe their prices to be 1/3 to 1/2 more than many other places ($350 for neutering and declawing. $120+ for vaccinations,) and as his regular DVM, I thought he'd at least want to see him, to check him out personally!!? He seemed more concerned about whether or not we could afford to pay their prices than whether or not our cat was going to live. So much for compassion and loyalty. And so much for NAVC. We're done with them. read more

Dr. Walden is truly exceptional. I now have 3 dogs and 1 cat that have had to be put down. Our beloved lab Beauregard left us this past Tuesday. He had two prior knee surgeries on his left hind leg. It held up for years but finally gave out. Beau was not himself. He was growling at our other dogs and became very possessive of his food, which he would not eat. Dr. Walden tried increasing the pain med he was already taking, and even added a synthetic narcotic. Unfortunately the additional meds didn't help. Beau was still miserable and got to the point where he couldn't even stand up without assistance. Even when he got to his feet he often fell down. It was heartbreaking to see considering this dog was once a champion frisbee catcher as well as a swimmer who never seemed to run out of energy. Dr. Walden was very understanding and compassionate. We will have Beau's ashes back in a couple days and we're planning to scatter them in our back yard since that was Beau's favorite place. There is nothing harder than having to euthanize a beloved family pet, but sometimes it has to be done. Dr. Walden and his clinic are second to none. I can't wait to see him with one of our other dogs so he can help keep our other guys happy and healthy, just like he did for 12yrs with Beau. read more

I have been taking my animals to the Northwest Austin Vet center since I have lived here. I have seen two vets at that location and I have been pleased every time we go there. Our first vet, Dr. Rafferty, moved down south near Circle C a few years ago. I was very sad to see him leave because he was gentle with our animals and always put them at ease. Of course he always told me how pretty my Taylor was, so of course I liked him! :o) Now we work with Dr. Walden, and we are happy with him. I can't say my dogs love to get poked, prodded, stuck, and be violated in the pooper but I know they are in good hands for their yearly visits, dental visits, kennel stays, as well as any other time they need a vet. After Dr. Rafferty left, we had one female vet that I really didn't like. She had no bedside manner and was abrupt when you asked her questions. Thankfully she is no longer at the facility. I usually don't have any issues (besides getting stuck on hold) with getting an appointment within days of calling. Typically they are on time for their appointments. I cannot speak any higher of Dr. Walden and his team. Took my (less than a year old) cat, Troy in for a diagnosis of what seemed to be Vestibular Syndrome. When no other vets could see me as soon as possible, Dr. Walden and his team made time. They were very, very, careful with handling Troy. Took him in on Saturday am, they kept him for a few hours for observation, followed up on Monday and Tuesday am. Troy has gotten better and is on the road to recovery. The team at Northwest Austin Veterinary Center are phenomenal and very cost effective as well. I am SO glad other pet parents wrote about the wonders of them, that helped me decide to take Troy in. read more

I'm not quite sure why this veterinary office has somewhat low ratings because I think it's a fantastic place to take your pet. I've never had any difficulty making an appointment and all of their staff are very friendly and knowledgable. I just had my cat's front paws de-clawed (please don't scorn me!) and I was very pleased with the whole process. I dropped my fur baby off in the morning, they notified me when he went back for his surgery and that his anesthesia went well then called me when everything was done to let me know how things went. Definitely nice to have such thorough follow-up throughout the day. My cat was able to come home the very next day and his little paws looked great! He also was super affectionate and didn't appear to be in any pain at all. I know this procedure can be a little pricey, but I think it's well worth it to know that it'll be done right and in a clean environment where there is less risk of infection. read more
