I had an incredible experience with VEG in south Austin during a very frightening moment. From the very first phone call, the entire team led with heart, urgency, and compassion. I had just learned my dog, Bonnie, had a massive splenic mass (later found to weigh 8.5 pounds) that could rupture at any moment, yet another emergency clinic told me surgery wouldn't be possible for weeks. When I called VEG, Dr. Lisa answered and immediately said, "Come now." That moment alone meant everything! She recognized the urgency and helped me navigate an incredibly difficult decision with empathy and clarity. She is such a kind person! Dr. Nina, who performed Bonnie's surgery, was outstanding. When I met her, I immediately felt reassured because she had such a calm confidence. This was a very high risk surgery, but I felt like we were in the best place we could be. And I was right because surgery was a success! The nurses and techs - Noemy, Kelsey, and Gina - were also amazing. They stayed in constant communication and made me feel informed, included, and genuinely cared for every step of the way. I've never experienced veterinary care like this. Such a caring, efficient and all-around wonderful place to care for your pet's emergencies. I took my Frenchie there after he ate part of a wine cork. The check in was so easy - I had called in advance and they texted me a check in link so when I got there that was all set. We were brought back immediately. The initial vet that took us in the open big room was so detailed with her part of the check in process, she even put us in a separate private room after learning my little man is reactive to other dogs. She was so kind and thorough. The final vet that saw us had such a caring energy - my little man never shook (like he normally does at the vet), and totally trusted her. She was thorough in her part of the exam and let us know all of our options. We left feeling relieved and well cared for. Not sure if this is typical, but we were really in and out - we were there maybe 30 min total (we went on a Monday a little after 9am, so not sure if that is typically a slower time?). It felt like a normal scheduled vet appointment. Even billing was awesome. I was emailed a receipt and requested an itemized one for our pet insurance and that was sent super fast. Yes, it was pricey ($190 for our visit) but emergency vets are always more expensive, so just expect that. Hopefully we do not have anymore emergency situations with our fur baby, but this is my local go-to should the need arise. Highly recommended! read more

I had to bring my dog in quickly due to a random injury / illness. The staff is very kind and treated my dog right away. I appreciated how thorough they were and they seemed to be taking care of all the animals very well. My only issue is I do feel they kind of make up prices and see what sticks. I paid a total of almost $4,000 for bloodwork, 18 hours at vet, some probiotics and 2 X-rays. At the time I paid whatever my dog needed but after getting home and doing a lost of research and speaking with other emergency vets, the pricing is truly outrageous. For a probiotic that normally cost $35 I was charged almost $90. I showed the invoice to other ER vets and the highest total they could come up with at all the offices for everything my dog received was not even over $2,000. I've also learned that many people who say they can't afford it, magically get the price reduced. Kind of just a pay whatever you can kind of thing. I think they throw numbers on a treatment plan and see who pays willingly and who doesn't. Looking back I would not of gone to this ER and unless you are made of money I advise you don't as well. I feel very taken advantage of. Highly recommend going somewhere else that will take just good care of your animals for a fraction of the price. read more

She ended up having to be hospitalized over several days, but we thought she wouldn't even make it through the drive there. Of course it was expensive, it was an inpatient stay at an emergency vet over a holiday weekend. BUT the level of care she received was worth it. Extremely professional, polite, compassionate, and wonderful with my cat. We got him checked out, got him some fluids and then came back in the morning for an ultrasound. We probably spent around 8 hours in that room and really appreciated the comfortable couch to wait on, I was even able to grab a nap. I would highly, highly recommended this place for any emergency vet needs. They got us answers we wanted, gave us meds, and an action plan moving forward. Then woman who answered calmly explained what was happening and what I needed to do next. She had already sent me a text with pre registration information and directions I could simply tap on. She encouraged me to fill out the paperwork to give me a chance to calm down. I had already made my decision when I walked through the door. Regardless, the staff immediately took control as Dr. Griffin examined my dog. Dr. Griffin assured me that I was making a sound decision. Dr. Griffin worked quickly and was tender and kind as she sent Hank over the rainbow bridge. While I chose not to spend a great deal of additional time with him, I did not feel rushed in any form or fashion. At 6:30am I was preparing an insulin shot for my senior dog, I accidentally dropped and broke the vial. Instant panic! My dog could go into a diabetic crisis without her shot! She fixed 4 doses to get me through the weekend and a prescription for insulin so that we would not miss a dose. I am writing this review one year after losing my dog following a visit to this emergency clinic. At the time, I was too devastated to share our experience. We brought her in on a Sunday because she was pooping blood, not eating, and hiding. All extremely concerning symptoms. After waiting about 45 minutes, the veterinarian performed an ultrasound and bloodwork and told us she was dehydrated. She received fluids, and we were told she could stay overnight but that it wasn't completely necessary since our regular vet would be open in the morning. We trusted that assessment and brought her home after paying $1,000. She passed away overnight. I will always question whether the severity of her condition was fully communicated to us and whether hospitalization should have been more strongly recommended. Losing her was devastating, and this experience has been incredibly difficult to process. I hope the clinic has started taking situations like this more seriously, because I truly hope you never have to experience the pain we felt. read more

They were super quick to get him in to be looked at, were great at explaining everything that was happening, and very accommodating. Kennels were both small and very large depending on the needs of your pet. And what we liked about it was they weren't tucked away isolated out of sight; they were in the main area. While on a car ride today with my sweet pup, I noticed she was experiencing some unusual pain and knew instantly that something terrible was happening. I looked up the closest animal hospital and ran in with my dog in a panic, and every single person in that room acted with extreme care, professionalism, and compassion that I'm still holding onto as we speak. I unfortunately got some devastating news and had to put my dog down before I even left the hospital, but the staff there made sure me and my girl had some private time together and were as comfortable as possible as we said our goodbyes. I was pretty distraught, so I wasn't able to get any names before I left, but I just want everyone who helped me today to know how grateful I am. My dog has never been this calm at a vet clinic. The open layout is very unique and I really appreciate that you're able to be with your pet for all the preliminary examinations. Everyone was very kind and helpful. Obviously expect higher prices because it's an ER and possibly longer wait times (we came in on a Saturday and were told around 2+ hours). Luckily we ended up getting in last minute at a regular clinic, but would absolutely come back here for emergency services - for the layout alone, but also because the staff was great. read more

So this is a difficult review, so bear with me. We brought our dog into VEG on a Sunday as our regular vet was closed. She was in a difficult spot where age, medical conditions and time met in a pretty fierce Venn diagram. My wife and I are a Paramedic and a Nurse Practitioner. They handled the case with dignity and respect. We hated to see our beloved puppy go but it was the best of a bad situation. Its hard to leave a 5 star review for such a terrible day but this place is amazing. Our sweet boy was hit by a car and we raced him from San Marcos to S Austin. I have been to a couple of ER vets in my life and this practice was above and beyond the best. In the past they took my suffering animal and left me outside grieving and in the dark. Here, we were with him every minute and kept informed at the bedside. My kids were able to make decisions and confront the reality of life. As a healthcare provider myself I appreciated(beyond words) the transparency and calmness. I even mentioned "I get it if people cant be there for surgery but why take your animal away!" They let me know they even allow people in surgery if they scrub in! Wow. That kind of inclusion is very healing.Our boy Lemon didn't make it but he got excellent care by Dr Max(he's Canadian yall, so nice!) and the rest of the staff who's names I forgot in the trauma . We held him while he passed in a quiet room and were given all the time we needed. Dr Max even stayed late and didn't transfer us to a stranger at a critical time of grief for my boys and I Seriously. Thank you all. I went on a Sunday because our regular vet was closed and it was incredibly apparent that they're completely inexperienced with exotic pets like rabbits. They very clearly don't have the proper equipment or experience for handling rabbits. They do not have the correct sizes for checking ear canals, nor do they have the equipment to look inside your rabbits mouth. Do not waste your time coming here. The waiting period is insane, we were there from 7:30 am until 9:50 while the doctor did a bare minimum test and we left without a diagnosis. The doctor noticed inflammation in the ear and decided against antibiotics after an ear cytology and because 'they' recommend a different care plan. Whoever 'they' may be. We spent $400 to be recommended fluids, a visit with our regular exotic vet, and a suggestion that the problem might just fix itself. Hearing the staff chat and laugh outside the waiting room felt extremely unprofessional. I suggest you only come here as a last resort if you have an exotic pet. read more

This place, while delivering my wife and us bad news, actually gave us closure to what was taking our sweet boy, Archer, away from us. Something that our ex-primary vet, VCA Tanglewood, couldn't do even after charging us over $3400 to diagnose and treat his ascites symptoms. His heart was failing and was clear as day during the ultrasound Dr. Q perform for us. VCA reported his heart was healthy and a non-issue in his condition. Even after bringing in a 3rd party "specialist" that ultrasounded him. I was fully expecting to shell out for services rendered at VEG, but I was shocked how affordable, caring, and professional the employees are! The layout was memorizing as you're with your little furry friend the entire time and you get to watch how employees work with other patients. during Christmas holidays my cat quit eating and drinking. I had seen my vet before Christmas in hopes the meds would work enough that she could get better during the time the vet office was closed. On the 26th I was at VEG animal emergency clinic. Dr Connor and Rachel took care of my cat. We agreed on a treatment that might work if she had IBD. For 2 days she kept refusing food and water but on the 3rd day she began to eat and drink water. she is doing fine now and my vet is continuing the way Dr. Connor was treating my Celia. Absolute life savers. I can't understand who would complain about a wait; this is an emergency service, with a finite number of spaces and trained hands. They're doing all they can to give the best help to those who need it. I'm beyond grateful that they were open on New Year's Eve, when everyone else was closed, to stabilize my baby boy after being attacked by another dog. Everyone was so kind, gentle, and genuinely cared about both his and my well-being. We went through so many soft blankets and I was offered water and coffee in abundance. When I tearfully mentioned that he was missing dinner, his favorite time of day, he got a few treats to tide him over. And yes, it's expensive. Healthcare is. I'll pay any price to keep my child safe. I have no plans on starting a human family, so this is it, and worth every penny. read more

My puppy had a stomach issue and was pooping a lot (mud butt bad). I arrived at 2:30 am and didn't get to leave til close to 7am. It's not like he had surgery. My cat woke up crying one day and I brought her in since it was Sunday and no one else was open. I was also desperate, she was very lethargic and wasn't standing on her own but she still was reaching out for me and squeezing my finger when I put it under her paw. When I came in the doctor automatically told me my cat was very critical. They were not able to help her. She then tells me while saying whatever is happening to my cat was something I was "brushing under the rug" I explained to her that my cat was still eating and drinking water up until that night before and I felt as if she didn't believe me. I also didn't like that she's telling me this in front of everyone. I felt humiliated as if she was blaming me for what was happening. She was telling me now they couldn't get an IV in her because of how dehydrated and was not reacting to anything, she was pretty much like she is going to die. When they took me into a private room to be with my cat before they put her down they automatically started talking the prices about cremation. I personally am very against cremation but in the moment was never given the option to not have her cremated. Under all the stress and emotions I was feeling as I'm holding the light of life die in my arms, I chose the package that would give me her ashes back but I was extremely upset at the thought that she was going to be cremated. I wish I would have other options but I live in the rural parts outside of Austin where I don't have anything nearby and unfortunately this was the only place that was less than an hour away from me. Wow! You can tell they all love what they do by the amount of care they show our pets and owners. Jonesy had stones in his urine that obstructed his ability to use the bathroom. More expensive than other ERs and be prepared to stay several hours because they're short staffed. We were charged $5000 (exactly ) with line items like "additional miscellaneous" and an absorbent amount of tests. The antivenom is more expensive here than any other ER. The tech helping our dog openly told us snake bites are their money maker and they bring in $250k/month on them. I'd try out another ER first and leave this as a backup option. read more

Long waiting periods, and unable to get blood from my cat took two tries, X-rays were confusing... no radiologist there to read results, was here from 11:25 to 3:54, and no treatment except fluids, anti nausea. Gave her two sedatives for all the tests to be done... do my cat is traumatized for sure. Didn't like vet who was very unclear , made me wait for literally hours, saw him twice. Couldn't effectively communicate with me details I needed for treatment or diagnosis. Won't ever come back to this Pet ER Group in Sustin on Lamar Blvd read more
