Our pug was brought to Dr. Varga with a reoccurring ear infection. The first surgery was not successful. After the second surgery, the little guy presented with swelling, heat, bright red coloration, and discharge. Our call was dismissed as healing discharge. We took our baby to an ER that night and are now told another surgery maybe needed to clean up the mess. While I am more upset over the pain and suffering of our baby, it is important to note that these treatments cost over $10,000. I do not recommend the practice. read more

We had an extremely troubling experience at AVDH and want to share our story so others can make an informed decision about entrusting their pets to this practice. In April, our dog Phyllis began experiencing recurrent nosebleeds. In early June, we visited AVDH for a CT scan and rhinoscopy. Dr. Pascoe recommended a CT scan and biopsy instead, explaining that a rhinoscopy would not provide clear images in a bloody, inflamed nasal cavity. We trusted his professional judgment and agreed to proceed. The CT scan revealed a mass occupying nearly her entire right nasal cavity, from her back canine tooth to just below her eye. The report stated: "Destructive right-sided rhinitis. Neoplasia is prioritized (i.e., adenocarcinoma, sarcoma). Less likely infectious/inflammatory." Dr. Pascoe told us he believed the mass was cancerous and assured us that the biopsy samples were excellent, even reaching far into her nasal cavity. Two weeks later, Dr. Pascoe called, expressing surprise that it wasn't cancer. Instead, he suggested it was just inflammation, possibly an autoimmune condition or allergies. While relieved, we were confused by the dramatic change in diagnosis. His treatment plan consisted of a month-long course of Zeniquin (antibiotic) and Rimadyl (anti-inflammatory), which we agreed to despite the significant cost. After approximately three weeks, Phyllis's condition deteriorated. We contacted Dr. Pascoe, and he prescribed doxycycline. Shortly afterward, Phyllis suffered a severe nosebleed that brought us to the ER on July 21st. It took over two hours to stabilize her enough for transfer to AVES, a facility better equipped for her case. At AVES, It was during a consultation that we learned her original biopsy had been a blind biopsy -- performed without direct visualization of the tissue. They suggested a rhinoscopy was the better option, that they can exactly see what they are sampling. This revelation immediately explained the earlier misdiagnosis and raised the concern for cancer once again. A properly guided biopsy and rhinoscopy confirmed both infection/rhinitis and nasal chondrosarcoma (nasal cancer). Had this cancer been identified in June, Phyllis could have begun radiation treatment two months earlier. Instead, the delay -- caused by an incomplete diagnostic approach and a lack of awareness that rhinitis often accompanies nasal tumors -- has been devastating both emotionally and financially. We were further concerned to learn that Rimadyl (an NSAID) can impair blood clotting, potentially worsening her severe nosebleed on July 21st. AVDH denied this risk, despite reputable veterinary sources indicating otherwise. After receiving the confirmed cancer diagnosis, we contacted AVDH seeking accountability, a refund to help offset treatment costs, and most importantly, an apology for the mistake. We were told that Dr. Pascoe "did a great job," that he "did not cause the cancer," and that Rimadyl has no clotting risk -- dismissing both our concerns and well-documented evidence to the contrary. We are devastated and angered by this experience and do not want any other pet or family to suffer a similar outcome. Please exercise caution when choosing a veterinary provider. read more

The staff at AVDH are very friendly and accommodating. The vets are very caring and compassionate towards our cat and us. AVDH staff are very transparent about prices, and are very helpful with options for the care of your pet. They are realistic about outcomes as well. I just want to say...AVDH is truly the best. I miss them already. My pup Pepper practically spent a good part of her childhood coming here to see Dr. Varga and the crew. As a student, I try to keep my pup expenses at the minimum...so I usually went to Thrive for basic check-ups and Emancipet for a low-cost spay. After her spay surgery, Pepp ended up with incontinence. It's pretty low chances, and lucky Pepp got the short end of the stick. AVDH definitely has more tools, resources and knowledge, so I chose to continue with them for her treatment. Dr. Varga was a lifesaver. He was so kind, informative and calm. He was willing to answer my barrage of questions as a new dog mom and never once brushed me off or spoke to me in an unprofessional manner. That's a quality vet right there! I also loved the entire front desk team. In particular, Mikayla was the gal I most likely spoke to on the phone...especially as COVID-19 times hit. I brought my dog Ginger to this hospital for the first time for an ultrasound because of high liver enzymes.... quickly she was diagnosed with a Liver Mass with a CT to follow to rule out other organ involvement. She was scheduled for surgery to remove the mass. Unfortunately, her liver was full of nodules and her condition was terminal. Ginger and I were best friends for 12 years- this sudden heartbreaking news was shocking and unexpected. We were treated with dignity and respect. Per their vets recommendations both of my pets were put on medication. After having a second opinion from a board certified cardiologist that specializes in HCM I was then Informed my pets have been misdiagnosed, and the medication they were put on was not for HCM. The vet kept my dog while she died. The animals want to be with their owners but the vets hold on to Penny when dying. We have been seeing Dr. Varga for the last 5 years and he is not only personable and kind with people he is incredible with pets. He just LOVES his job and it shows. This was by far the best vet care I have experienced from setting up the appointment over the phone and checking out. I called 4 vet clinics/hospitals because my cat had been throwing up the last 4 days but the day I called was pretty bad..so I was worried. Each clinic I got.. the calls were super uncomfortable and most times I was being rushed off. Jannah answered the phone and she is absolutely welcoming and you can tell she truly cares about your pet getting cared for. She got me a same day appointment and got my records transferred over for me. Checking in was quick and they took Shadow right in! Dr. Varga was super helpful and answered any questions I had. It was hard to not be in the room with your pet to see if they are okay. But he was very informative about letting me know what was going on and reassuring me that Shadow was just fine and being a "cool cat." His tech Dylan, was also answering my questions and went into detail about what tests they were doing and WHY (the most important part) they were doing they tests needed. The technician which I should have remembered her name told me the cost included food and medicine for one week and never said anything about 3 days of hospital stay. *I also mentioned to Dr. Varga how the vet had mentioned possible hospital stay for days and told him I couldn't afford that. Not once did he say that was included in the cost estimate. I know I asked questions so I don't appreciate your comments about I knew. 2. Daisy had not been sick 4-5 days prior, only 2 days. She was at the emergency hospital in Round Rock Sunday, then the veterinary office all day Monday. I came to you to get the ultrasound done that Tuesday when she was admitted. And yes you all are the " professionals", so you knew how sick she was, especially having jaundice and by the blood work, so why not tell me that the percentage range for her recovery was very low? Which no one did. I have no reason to make things up. I only signed because y'all made it sound not so serious and that you've had other cats to recover from this. I don't appreciate your negative comments because I was trying to do what was best for Daisy, I'm the consumer here and just asked for honesty in trying to save my cat. I've been coming to AVDH since 2016 - they were able to diagnose my dog with IBD (after 6 years of other vets not knowing why he was sick), and when Oliver developed masses on his spleen and anus, Dr. Sarah thoroughly explained the diagnosis and treatment options. Dr. Jeremy Varga has been my vet ever since we moved to Austin over 8 years ago. He & his staff are superb & very caring. He saw me through my cat's death exactly 4 1/2 years ago at age 13 & today (on World Pet Memorial Day) he saw me through my dog's death at age 14, in both cases ending their lives only when it was time & painlessly in both cases. A few years ago they saved my dog's life by diagnosing a bad gall bladder & removing it. He diagnosed my dog with cancer nearly 36 weeks ago & was with me (& my wife) every step of the way, always helping with meds & in every other way, as our dog lived on a surprisingly long time. Dr. Donop is gifted to the point he does not have to stand behind strict protocols for customer interactions and dialogue. He is down to earth and simply tells it like it is. He is the most gifted and honest veterinarian I know. I spent over $2500 at other locations to determine my dog needed left rear knee surgery and a plate installed. Chiropractic and acupuncture made things worse. Nothing was done to alleviate the problem. Dr. Donop entered the patient room. I said the dog has a problem with the left rear leg. I said nothing of the previous information derived from the $2500 worth of medical work. He kneeled down, grabbed the dog's leg and within 10 seconds told me exactly what the problem was. By 1:00 PM that afternoon, the dog had a plate installed in his left knee. It has been 5 months since the repair. The dog can run as before. The repair is 100 percent successful. The first 4 months take time for the owner as the dog cannot be off leash and run. With time, the dog can do more and more. After 4 months the dog can run again but we do not play tennis ball or encourage chasing of squirrels. We don't want the other knee to break. The dog is a 10 year old Golden Retriever. He is at 100 percent for his age. So you want to see where the dog will stay overnight at the hospital? They will let you walk back to the sleeping quarters with the dog. That is right; you are welcome to see their facilities. If you are to have surgery you are welcome to tour all the facilities including the surgical area. (You can look in; you can't actually walk into the room). I've worked 8 years in hospitals, including surgical areas. Their facilities are modern and complete. Above all, Dr. Donop is totally efficient and effective. read more

Our pup had eaten something off the ground that upset his stomach, they did an x-ray and other tests, which came out to half the price it would've been at an emergency hospital. They were friendly and took no more than 30 minutes with our fur baby; we made a quick stop at Juiceland nearby and came back just in time. This is a great choice vet for your fur babies and your wallet. They really care for your animals, when we come back to Austin this will be our go-to vet! read more

I have gone to this vet for a year and a half and they helped me treat my beautiful Husky who had seizures. It has been rough but they made it easier. Luna passed away a few weeks ago due to cluster seizures even though she was barely two years old. The people at AVDH were compassionate, caring and very helpful. One of the vets called me the day after to talk to me about Luna and tell me that there was nothing more that could have been done. Yesterday I received a card in the mail with condolences and everyone had signed it with such kind words. I cried but It was good tears to remember by fur baby. Admittedly, I looked into AVDH first because it was just a few miles down the road from me. I had no idea how lucky I was to have found such five-star care. My family cannot thank the staff at Austin Veterinary enough. Our sweet little pig Cookie passed away last night and after years of not finding a vert willing to actually look at her, Dr Varga did. They don't deal with pigs. They're not really equipped for it. He was willing to help anyway and he treated her like a beloved family member and not a farm animal. Without his help and the help of all the staff at Austin Veterinary (bending over backward to help us get prescriptions and make it possible to bring her into the office safely), she would likely have passed with no explanation why. Losing her has been tragic and she died way too young (just over three years old) but knowing why at least allows us to know that there's nothing more we could have done to save her. I decided to adopt a cat who is FIV positive, I had already fallen in love with him before they told me. After a couple days at home I noticed he was sneezing a fair amount. They told me to make sure and get him immediate medical attention whenever he started showing any signs of being sick. Dr Kneupper was amazing!!! Balboa was hiding in the corner and terrified as we waited for her to come in. I'm pretty certain she is a cat whisperer because the second she picked him up he was instantly relaxed. Dr Kneupper also took the time to address all of my questions and concerns. RAD , Dr. Vargas and his team saved my doggies life! NO JOKE! She had acute kidney failure and the first vet thought Peanut wouldn't make it. I've written many reviews, but no review means more to me than this one. OSVH has been our family vet for years, and they are the reason my sweet lab Eisenhower is still alive. Dr. Donop diagnosed his unusual seizures as a thyroid condition, and two pills a day has kept him steady and healthy for years. I'm not sure if Ike knows that his life is owed to Dr. Donop, but he LOVES that man. He's like an automatic cookie dispenser, and that is what it takes to get a Labrador's respect. Dr. Hurwitz is just as loving and dedicated, even coming in on Super Bowl Sunday to do an emergency C-Section on my parent's dog. He doesn't give as many cookies as Donop, but no one does really. We started taking our pets to Austin Diagnostic Veterinary Clinic ("the clinic") in 2005. We sometimes questioned the veterinarians' diagnoses and treatment plans but followed them faithfully. To date, we have spent over $33,000 in the clinic on four cats. Our 20-year old cat's health started declining rapidly in early 2015 and she was hospitalized for several days, The vet told us she was doing "great" when she was released. We called them three days later on a Sunday because we were convinced she was dying. After we described her symptoms, the vet said he felt she would be fine, implying that we were overreacting. She was dead the next day. We recently moved to Georgetown and shortly after made the 130-mile round trip to take our ailing 18-year old cat to the clinic. He stayed there one night, and we picked him up the next day after we were told he was doing "great." The next day, when it was clear he was still very ill, we again took him in, got more meds, and were told he was much better. Within five hours after bringing him home, we had to take him to an emergency clinic to have him euthanized. We hope the success of this clinic does not prevent them from giving honest and caring advice to their clients and from showing personal concern in the future.
