I dropped off my 10 week old kitten to get neutered at 8am. They told me to pick up later between 5 -5:45 pm. When I got there to pick up they told me that they hadn't even started the procedure yet. They finally finished up around 6:15. ***So they left a tiny kitten in a box with no food or water for 10 hours! The team there seemed overworked and not trained well. I found incompetence across the board at APA. Will never go back. read more

I love everything about APA! They are a "no kill" facility and do everything they can to assist our community, for both humans and our other than companions. Full disclosure, I have never adopted from APA. I sadly put my almost 17 year old, 55lb lil big guy to sleep just over three weeks ago (I had a team come to my home and it was very tranquil). My buddy's mind was still there and he had more love to give. His poor body just gave out and I promised him I would never let him suffer. Elvis was spoiled - not rotten - and he had A LOT of belongings. A bed in every room in my house (except the bathrooms and kitchen), his own toy box filled to the rim, a dresser with all of his clothes and blankets, special treats and so much more. When thinking of a place to donate - Elvis would've definitely wanted to share with others - Austin Pets Alive was my first choice. I have been a big supporter since moving to Austin over eight years ago, attending charity efforts, contributing to drives, etc. because I admire all of their efforts to heel and not kill animals. I called APA and inquired about what they would/would not accept and explained my situation to them. Every staff/volunteer I spoke to was so kind and empathetic. I knew I chose the right org to give my beloved's things to. After over two weeks of gradually boxing things up (some will never leave my home), and three full car drop offs later, I received an out of the blue condolence call. A few happy tears helped relief some of the pain, if only a bit. Thank you APA for everything you do. You care and it shows. Impressive resources for various issues. I have had a good experience with adopting a 7 month old puppy, who was a handful. They have help for evaluating temperament--My puppy did very well with other dogs, which was very helpful. Their staff was helpful in directing me toward the right puppy, and knew which ones wouldn't be a good match, saving me lots of time and potential aggravation. They are always overwhelmed with too much to do, which is because of external factors; they work very hard under lots of pressure, and I was impressed with their services, given how overwhelming the issues are that they face, constantly. Great service! I wish people were more responsible. Too many people fail to spay & neuter, or think they can do it, when they have no idea what they;re doing. The animals are the ones that suffer because of the ignorance of too many people in Austin. A++++ to APA! read more

Overall, my adoption experience was interesting. I went in on a Sunday and heard a bunch of loud dogs and couldn't believe the cats were so close to the dogs and were in such a hot area. Nevertheless, I had a wonderful woman let me pet just about every cat I wanted to and the moment I was headbutted by my cat, I knew she had chosen me. The adoption process was somewhat long and there was a quiz to make sure I would provide my cat enough attention and not de-claw her. I filled out some forms and paid the small adoption fee and left a tip because I had heard of the great charitable work this organization does. I enjoyed the connection between APA and Tomlinson's and have continued to buy all of my goods at Tomlinson's. My cat went into hiding for 39 days when I let her into my apartment. I looked at her history and she was put on anxiety medication and they did not give me any upon adoption. I spoke to a behavioral specialist who took over a week to respond each time and almost returned my cat. I did everything possible to get my cat out of hiding and eventually it worked. A lot of the recommendations I got from APA were not applicable to my 450 sq. ft. apartment and they kept trying to get me to remove my cat from under my stove and isolate her elsewhere. I was able to eventually get the anxiety medication for free from the medical unit and this helped me finally meet her. I nearly gave up but I changed my misgendered cat's name and have fallen in love with her. I cannot be more grateful. read more

Be sure when you pick up a foster pet from these folks and they tell you where to go to pick the adoreables at and: 1. Have them disclose illness or meds recently proscribed as they don't disclose. I mean you just probably paid for an animal or two and signed all the paperwork and when you get there boom, the animals are sick and on meds supplied by their clinic but not necessarily transmitted during the sales cycle.. In fact, not.. 2. Have them sign a disclosure statement from you, that you know everything PRIOR to picking up the adorables as: Once you get them, then take them back to have the fixed, game over. No support, worse than the puppy-kittie mills. "Due to liability" well, you didn't disclose in the first place so now you have liability for selling an animal without full disclosure vs taking care of the issue. Oh and when you try to take care of the issue by emailing them at 9AM, you get a final decision at 4PM, totally too late to do anything that day so.. Buyer beware.. Other than that, a great place to find an adorable that looks like it is growing up in a homeless shelter in a flood zone.. What ARE you going to do when it floods again at 3AM? We adopted to previous dogs from APA. One, that's still alive and 14 years old, turned out to be a fantastic dog. The other, that we recently had to put down because even our vet saw that it was time, had some physical issues but mainly mental issues. We gave her love and tons of being patient. Our two previous dogs we bought. My wife and I are used to dogs and are responsible owners. Just recently, we adopted a male dog, that we were told likely was about 2 years old and a lab mix. I want to be fair, he was a recent dog they took in and they said they had no history on the dog. The following day my wife went, filled out the adoption papers she was told she had to fill out before even seeing the dog on her own, and she saw the dog seemed ok. Keep in mind, even when I was there the day before, we made it CLEAR, if we see the dog won't work out, can we bring it back and they said absolutely, you have 30 days and they wanted us to be sure it was a good match. Well, it wasn't a good match. After the dog was neutered, we got an email saying we could pick him up at noon. I was working so my daughter went with my wife to get him. While there, they told them no, they can't get him till 6:30 pm. My wife went with a friend then, the dog had diarrhea and the back of the inside of the truck was a mess, along with the dog constantly had nose irritation. This went on for a few days and then we brought him to our vet to get him treated. THERE we saw the first signs that dog was VERY hard to control. He had to be really held back from attacking the small dogs there in the waiting room. He was rough with us just doing basic things like feeding him. He also got testy with our old dog and had to hold him back. Taking him for a walk, he was good until he wanted to go after what he saw he wanted to go at. The vet said he's only 14 months old. I found out he's mainly a Cane Corso. When we talked to APA, they told us we could return him TODAY. We go there and then they tell us THERE, we were told wrong and must bring him there tomorrow. Look, I appreciate what they do there, but please don't believe what they tell you on the phone or emails. They show NO interest in addressing their communication problem and what the originally told you. Sorry to say, NEVER again. read more

I'm dismayed by the negative reviews, when there are hundreds of people who will tell you what an incredible organization this is but it is usually an occasional negative experience that ends up being voiced here versus the many positive experiences. No rescue is ever going to be completely idyllic, because it takes a lot out of a person to devote themselves to animal rescue & keep things organized when all rescue groups experience limitations and unpredictability at some point. It's an emotionally taxing & exhausting line of work so it is important not to take things too personally. Ultimately, everyone wants to see rescued animals saved and into loving homes - often that means setting ones feelings aside. With that said, I want to emphasize what a truly amazing rescue organization APA has been for me and many lone rescuers I know. I live in Dallas and when I had trouble finding a home for cats, APA came to my rescue and offered to help me. I especially want to highlight the lovely coordinator woman in cat intake! She is a truly sweet and caring individual. She is professional, organized and incredible knowledgeable. She offered me guidance and support that I couldn't find locally. I truly appreciate everything APA does and cannot understand how anyone would bash them. Thank you to all the staff & volunteers who work so hard to keep things running. We were fostering two kittens from APA and during a late night/early morning emergency involving potential toxin exposure, we called the emergency line they give you at 10 p.m. We informed the person on-call about what happened and they did not seem to care or acknowledge any urgency even though we told them that the ASPCA toxicity hotline told us it was urgent to go to an emergency vet right away. Because of this we acted out of an abundance of caution and took the foster and the other kitten who we recently adopted to an emergency vet. We tried to communicate with APA through this emergency line for hours, each time we spoke to somebody they seemed indifferent and burdened by the wellbeing of the kittens. We had to explain what happened multiple times and were repeatedly told that it "wasn't an emergency and we could wait until the morning for a check up" even though the ASPCA told us the kitten could die. We went to the emergency vet with both kittens and had them checked in and were informing APA the entire time and it wasn't until 1 AM that we were informed we would not be reimbursed for medical services rendered by the emergency vet. They never disclose this whenever you are trying to foster. They did not offer until 2:30 AM the option to have the "on-call vet" meet us at the town lake location. They told us it would be 30 minutes to an hour until they could see the foster kitten. After hours of stress and worry and endless communication with the shelter, we finally got to APA and the people who met us there were upset, irritated, and did not know the details of what was going on despite us being in communication with them for the past several hours. We left the foster kitten there overnight by himself and in the morning we called to check on him and they told us, "I don't know what you want me to say. He's the same as he has been. You can pick him up after six". When we did pick him up, he was terrified, shaking, and covered in matted urine, feces, and litter. He had a bruise on his left leg presumably from the IV. It did not look like it had been cleaned and it was not bandaged. The kittens ended up being OK, but it was a horrible experience and we are incredibly grateful that he is safe and adopted. I sincerely hope that APA recognizes their shortcomings and failures so that they can work towards the goals they initially set out to achieve. read more

My wife and I had a 4-5 month old puppy who's name was Aloha, She tested positive for Parvo at this facility and the veterinarians and staff were so loving to us that they gave us $150 worth of medications for free to nurse her back to health. Unfortunately on the drive home and on the way upstairs to our apartment Aloha passed away from her Parvo Virus infection before we could administer the first round of meds and I.V. We thank this facility and it's staff for everything they did for her even though we lacked the funds to pay for treatment. God surely lives in this place. read more

I reached out and emailed about two pets and the feedback was they were both aggressive. I have another pet in the home so they weren't a match. I was sent another dog but he was adopted out before I was able to get to him, YAY for him. I then emailed about a dog in foster. I met the foster parents but actually this dog was a give back, not in a foster as they noted. The little guy seemed to be a perfect fit. Per the APA policy, I had to met him first human only, and then we can do a meet with the dogs. Apparently, they had many others interested and someone came in and adopted him because they were first in line. APA was not transparent about the process, different people communicated each time with different information, yet, when I sent an email back saying how much I loved the dog, no one said "rush to fill out an app before you lose him". I'm a great dog Mom and a human, looking to do good in the world while APA is a communication cluster just trying to adopt out dogs to whomever is first. I went yesterday to APA at 6:32 pm and they close at 7 pm. My dog got tested for Parvo 30 mins before I went. It turned out he for sure had it. I went to APA to speak with them on what I should do. If getting the home treatment is better or surrendering him. I only got to talk to a receptionist and she looked at my dog. She said he's moving and basically looks good, but I couldn't get the home treatment because I got there too late and to come back the next morning at 11 am when they open. Hours later my dog died. If I would have known how bad my dog was, I would have surrendered him. They're called Austin Pets Alive. My dogs dead. I was told they have enough dogs with Parvo. They don't need anymore. Is this why they didn't want to take my dog? They're supposed to be a shelter to rescue dogs. They're killing them. I had proof that my dog had Parvo in order to get the at home treatment. I adopted a dog march 3 rd had to bring her back 3 times. First time she was having trouble breathing they put her on breathing machine for 2 days the other times was for problems breathing. She had been through heartworm treatment she was finished with treatment & resting period. She had been on alot of meds the whole time I had her. I also brought her to my vet. She passed away sep 30th we had her 7 months. The whole time I had her she had health issues. She was 2 1/2 . I can't say enough great things about this amazing doggy adoption agency. From the moment my girlfriend and I walked in we were immediately greeted with a smile. We then met with a match maker who was able help us learn the dog's temperament and behaviors which was amazing because not all dogs fit with all lifestyles. My girl and I had a dog already in mind and she was Snortlette. Aidan and Andy had created her profile and we fell in love with her special characteristics . We then met with Snortlette and it was love at first sight! She was a big baby who's just misunderstood because of her snorts and grunts which my girlfriend and I love . I can't thank Austin pets alive enough for the amazing staff, Aidan and Andy for making this happen. This is really great organization. They really love their pets, and it is amazing what they do. I am so proud that we have an organization like this in Austin. Unfortunately, my experience was not great, but I still think they are a wonderful organization. We adopted from here. It was a one-day, here you go! We did not even get a chance to get our house ready. Before we knew it, we had a very active pit/lab mix. I was expecting a call every 7, 30 and 90 days, but I did not hear anything. I called to consult about behavior problems, and did get results after a couple of days, but he was a little overwhelmed. My lab mix was very high energy and ended up putting my 2 year old's safety at risk. She would run full blast and knocked my 2 year old flat on the ground. Also she was beginning to growl with my 2 year old. I think due to boundary issues. APA was great about taking her back, but also made us feel bad. We did pay for 6 weeks of behavior training but I was still concerned for my 2 year old's safety with such a high energy - "bull in a china shop" dog. We will probably adopt at the humane society next time. read more

Great shelter. Great volunteers. When I got my dog here 1.5 years ago she had an eye condition and she wasn't spayed. APA got her spayed for really cheap, but then they told me I would have to pay for the eye surgery myself... yet they called a few weeks later and said "actually we can do the eye surgery, no charge." They also took a lot of time to help me find a dog who would be safe in a house with cats. How cool is that?? I mean ok, it's an underfunded nonprofit type shelter so it smells kind of gross and the staff can be a stretched a bit thin. But they really work hard to get their animals into loving healthy homes. read more

There are many people at APA that put their heart and souls into helping pets and the people that love them. To that degree they are admirable. The only advice I can give anyone is to take what they tell you about the prospective pet's health with a grain of salt. As soon as you get the sense this is an animal you wish to adopt, spend the money, take the pet to your vet and have it screened. Do your due diligence before getting attached. APA will not hesitate to allow you to take home a sick pet that hasn't been thoroughly vetted by a veterinarian. Please read other reviews sharing the same experiences. I imagine part of this is simply a financial consideration as doing a work up on every cat and dog is far too expensive. They do their best. read more

Perhaps this place focuses more on dogs, but the black cat we were looking at was lethargic and sneezing. An employee tried to shame my husband over not taking her because, "of a little sneeze". Our last adopted cat that did that needed a grand in treatment for Pneumonia. Treat your animals before trying to sell them. Word of advice: if you want to be approved here you mustn't have kids, a job, or other pets. We have been denied from this rescue 3 times without even being able to meet the dog. Twice because the "breed we applied for may have alpha traits" even though they mention in the descriptions they are friendly with other dogs, and once because we mentioned we sometimes bring our current dog to dog parks and trails and they didn't seem to like that either. We are great owners. Our current dog is very loved and well taken care of. It's very sad that they are so quick to judge and so many dogs miss out on the opportunity of finding a good home. read more

The cruelty and neglect that happens at APA is hidden behind their "no kill" mission. How can this place let pregnant animals give birth succumbing cats and dogs on the streets to die because they are full. I was turned away with some kittens I found and they ended up passing a few days later, meanwhile they are putting cats through complicated births where they need c sections and contributing to the crisis instead of alleviating it. I would like to do a study comparing the outcomes of the animals turned away from no kill places like this vs the outcomes at open admission shelters. I bet thé "no kill" APA would end up having way more dead outcomes that the other considered "kill shelters" just because of all of those they turn away. Shame on you people. read more

My daughter asked Santa for a kitten this year. The adoption process was super easy & I could tell Zoey would be a perfect fit for our little family. A week after bringing Zoey home we began to notice she wasn't feeling well. We took her to the vet a discovered she had an pneumonia. Which is very scary in a small kitten. I reached out to PetsAlive to make them aware, they immediately communicated with the staff vets & were able to loan us a nebulizer to help with her breathing. The communication was so efficient & all responses were so quick! We could tell they really cared about our pet. When we went in to pick up the nebulizer a staff member by the name of Cheyenne, stopped what she was doing almost immediately to assist us! Dog bite story. If I could give APA negative star reviews I absolutely would. They are irresponsible, dishonest, neglectful, and care more about profit than the animals and people looking to adopt. I was at a friend's place that had adopted a dog from APA and everything was going smoothly (the dog is apparently territorial, anxious, and gets nervous around people. They had to add a frosted window cover on their patio door to avoid her reacting to anyone walking by) she was letting me pet her, give her treats, she gave me kisses, did paw shakes, etc. We were sitting on the couch and when I touched her paw, she lunged and attacked me and bit me on the leg. I had to go to the emergency room to get my wounds cleaned, get stitches, and get a tetanus shot and now I have to wait for confirmations from animal control that she has all her vaccinations (including rabies) up to date. Now APA is aware of her biting before (I am her second victim as far as we know) and that she has behavior issues. My question is why did they deem her as ready to be adopted? She clearly needs more help than they gave her. They gave her training supposedly, but obviously it wasn't enough. She seems to have some boundaries and potential PTSD that they didn't disclose. Not to mention my fiance and I have tried adopting a cat through them and the process was completely messy. Did a meet and greet before being given medial records only to find out the cat had FIV. We tried adopting another cat and when someone else adopted it, they were not sympathetic and gave a poor "apology" saying "sorry." HOW RUDE! I would NOT recommend adopting from this agency as they lack professionalism and responsibility for their animals and CLEARLY don't care enough for the safety of people if an animal has behavior issues. read more

Even though I've adopted my dogs from the Austin Animal Shelter, I came to Pets Alive for annual checkups for my rat terrier. All the vets and nurses are all so nice to our beloved four legged friends. They even have a waiting area with a TV, and a store whose earnings go toward them. However, parking is atrocious here. We are at Cameron road. The parking lot is bumpy, and the parking spaces at the front are always taken. Do yourself a favor and visit early mornings. read more

We went to several animal shelters and had went to Austin Pets Alive! to look for a cat for my kiddo. She initially wanted a baby kitten but then set her sights on this handsome fella that we later named Tohbee. The adoption process was quite thorough, to ensure you knew what you were getting when you adopted a animal of their shelter. Tohbee took a few weeks to get used to us, as he was quite shy at scared at first but he's quite playful now and loves to follow my kid around the house! Remarkably inept operationally. This agency will hastily judge you and deny adoption without exploring all possibilities with you. Due to covid19, I've been going back and forth between Austin and my family in AZ. I informed the agency of this rather than lying. The person I was working with assumed I wouldn't abide to the distemper watch of 40 miles and told me I was ineligible. I would obviously abide to the 40 mile distemper watch and cancel any future flights if I was considered. However, I wasn't even given the chance to discuss this possibility with APL. I've frankly never been so insulted and heartbroken. Save yourself the heartache and adopt from an agency with emotional intelligence and common sense. read more
