Driving the I-40 and passing through this place is a MUST stop. The atmosphere is amazing. It's about as Texas as you can possibly get. Cowboy hats and boots on every staffer and the walls lined with mounts of hunting trips! The food is really good. Not the best steak I've ever had but still very good. Tried the green chili cream corn queso appetizer and didn't really care for that. The service was very good and the dinner show watching people at the center table who signed up for the 72oz steak challenge was very entertaining! The Coconut cake was THE BOMB! Really good experience for the money

We made reservations well in advance because we knew how popular this place was & to tell you the truth we weren't expecting great food because we thought this possibly could just be a novelty type but I'm here to tell you the food was out of this world & quite possibly the best meal/experience we've ever had! We ended up ordering the 1/2 lb Cheeseburger w Mac & Cheese & the 10 ounce Prime Rib w a side Caesar Salad. As mentioned above everything was absolutely fantastic! Our server, Estefania, did an excellent job of taking care of us despite it being a full house & the prices were more than fair ( 2 Entrees, 2 sides & 3 Cocktails ) for $ 100.37. We liked everything so much we came back for Breakfast the following morning & that was terrific as well. The Big Texan is far more than just the novelty of the 72 ounce Steak challenge, it's the total package. Next time we find ourselves in Amarillo we will absolutely have Dinner here again. Thank you Big Texan for such a memorable experience!

Delicious We stopped here on our way through Amarillo on our way to Flagstaff and had to see everything. Especially people trying to eat a 72 ounce steak, which was a spectacle. The food was delicious and we were completely surprised when we actually got booth seating. I wouldn't recommend making a reservation because they are completely packed. The gift shop is absolutely wonderful as well as games and things while you are waiting if you don't have a reservation, which made the time pass very quickly. Way to go Big Texan!!!!

I decided to visit amarillo just to try this place. last time, yrs ago when i was driving thru here i had saw their sign on the highway and added to my things to do in texas i routed my stop to this city just so i can get me some cheap steak in cattle town. feels like i was back in college, not naming it, but you can smell the cow poop in the morning biking to campus.... got a 24oz ribeye for $40 and a tall mug of porter for $10. total with tip was 60 something. i think i did 15% tip. the whole place had a texas vibe from the dining hall with all the deer heads mounted and all the staff in cowboy/girl gear. food was good. it was a great experience. would definitely return to try a different steak cut even bought merchandise from the store. it is definitely a tourist attraction.

The Big Texan Steak Ranch is definitely an experience, not just a meal! We went all in and ordered the ribeye, brisket, and ribs with sides of green chili creamed corn, fried okra, and cowboy beans. The steak was flavorful and tender, the ribs literally fell off the bone, and the brisket was solid and satisfying. The standout for me? The green chili creamed corn and fried okra, absolutely delicious and full of flavor. The cowboy beans were okay... just beans, nothing special compared to the rest of the meal. Service was superb, friendly, attentive, and made the whole experience even better. And of course, the entertainment factor is real! While we were there, we watched someone attempt the famous 72 oz steak challenge. Fun fact: it's actually cheaper to take the challenge and pay less than to just order the steak outright. That alone tells you how legendary this place is. If you're in Amarillo, this is a must-stop for both the food and the atmosphere.

04/12/26 The food is just okay. The atmosphere is interesting, but of course it would be more fun if someone was competing in the 72oz steak challenge. We ordered the lone star cut for two and the steak tasted more like hamburger meat unfortunately. There's a hard sear on the outside of the steak that makes it pretty crisp and I wasn't a big fan. It also was a tad dry even though we ordered it medium rare. The star of the entire meal was the green chile creamed corn. My husband ordered the rattlesnake beer and asked for the 27oz mug which is only $10. The server told my husband that was the only beer he wasn't allowed to sell in a 27oz and he was pretty sure it was because of its high alcohol content. So, he had to get the lesser value at $7 for 16oz. Didn't really make sense since there are at least two other draft beer selections that had higher alcohol contents. Our server was nice, but he disappeared and didn't check on us until we were half done with our meal. Dinner was an experience, but I wouldn't necessarily recommend this place if you're looking for a good steak.

FUN VIBES! My dad has been talking about this restaurant non-stop since the last time he drove through the area, all of the billboards advertising the 72 oz steak challenge really drew him in. We took a stop here for lunch recently. Our server was okay, pretty bare minimum service and I had to ask for water refills. I liked the fried pickle appetizer, however I felt the pickle spears were too thick. Andreas were good, I really enjoyed the quesadilla and my dad enjoyed his steak. There's a bit of a communal vibe inside, with long tables where you are sat next to other parties. It was fun to talk to other people also going on road trips and talk about where they're coming from and going to.

Ditto exactly my review from last year! Same great burger, brew, and servers!!!!!!!!!

Great Route 66 photo spot in front of the restaurant.

WOW! I guess third time's a charm because this dining experience was legendary! Our server, Anahya, was so friendly and attentive, which after being on the road all day was a welcomed experience. I had a flight of their in house brews and each were tasty. My sirloin was cooked to perfection as was my sidekick's filet. The vibe is always a fun cowboy themed experience.

Found this place after watching an episode from Wonderhussy on YouTube and made it a point to stop in during my road trip. Really glad I did. The place is huge and was absolutely packed when I got there, but the service was still friendly and quick. The steak was delicious and cooked perfectly, exactly what you want when stopping at a legendary Texas steakhouse. The whole spot has a fun, larger-than-life road trip vibe. It's definitely one of those classic roadside destinations that feels like part restaurant, part attraction. They also have the famous 72 oz steak challenge. No one was attempting it while I was there, but it was still fun seeing the setup and imagining someone trying to tackle it. If you're passing through Amarillo on a road trip, this is definitely a spot worth checking out. Great food and a memorable stop along the way.

Driving cross country with my son for his relocation to 29 Palms CA. Stopped at the legendary steakhouse. When we walked in at 5pm on a random Wednesday we were not prepared for the sensory overload.... Table up front was for the legends attempting the 72oz steak. Seating is both family style, booth and two or four. Tons of trophy horned animals and cattle horns. Couple guitar players belting out Texas classics. Service is super friendly and prompt. Although this is a tourist trap, it is also a darn good restaurant. Great place to stop on cross country tour.

The Big Texan is worth visiting at least once for the experience. The Western atmosphere, Route 66 charm, and famous steak challenge make it a fun stop. The food was decent, but not the best steak I've ever had. Overall I wish they would have honored the Lunch special for us because waiting about 20 mins for our waiter was disappointing and not being able to get a deal.

What a great place to stop! Thanks you Big Texan!!!

We were driving through Amarillo, Texas, and decided to stop by the famous Big Texan Steak Ranch, and it absolutely did not disappoint! From the moment we walked in, the atmosphere was fun, lively, and full of energy. The hosts were incredibly friendly, welcoming, and helpful, which made us feel right at home. The food was delicious, and the portions were more than worth the price. Everything we ordered was flavorful and satisfying. What truly took our experience over the top, though, was our server, Corbin. He greet us with a great smile, he was friendly, inviting, attentive, and extremely knowledgeable about the menu. He made excellent recommendations, checked on us often, and genuinely made our visit memorable. Especially when my wife forgot her sunglasses. Corbin was essential in us finding. Thank you Corbin!!! If you're passing through Amarillo, The Big Texan is definitely worth the stop, and if you get Corbin as your server, you're in for an even better experience!

Ask the Community - The Big Texan Steak Ranch

    Do they take reservations?

Yes. The Hotel takes reservations. My wife says the restaurant also takes reservations.

Do they have a Happy Hour?

They have happy hour drink specials but not happy hour food options.

Do they have televisions in the bar area?

Yes they do. The beer taps are in an area just removed from the bar. As you walk in the main entrance the beer taps are on the right, about 30-40 ft. inside the door. The bar area is just past the taps but to the left.

    Open today , Christmas?

Their website says they had a Christmas lunch Buffett but it looks like it only went till 3pm

Do they serve wine and spirits in addition to beer?

Yes, margs and well drinks are on the menu photos. It says ask your server about cocktail specials!

Can the 72 oz steak be ordered without participating in the challenge? Or do you have to order the tomahawk steak instead?

I believe you can purchase it without doing the challenge.

    Is there patio dining outside?

We were there in mid-October and I didn't see any. Also worth noting that although all the staff were wearing masks, about half the patrons were not. 😒

Do you need reservations for Saturday night?

    No we was just there

I want to do the steak challenge on Friday August 18. Do I have to book?

On a Friday I would call ahead just to be sure.

How big is the country fried steak dinner? Just the country fried steak itself

I ordered it and it was pretty big. It's also made out of hamburger meat, not beefsteak.

    Can you share plates?

Yes as far as I've seen. Portions are large.

Really fun and good food. If you want quiet romantic dinner, no!

    How us the atmosphere?

    Very nice and country.

Can I eat gluten free here safely?

The Big Texan can accommodate any dietary restriction - these are professional folks and they know what they are doing in the kitchen.

But if your idea of culinary heaven involves a grease-stained paper liner, an old-school Texas roadhouse vibe, and a burger that requires structural support, you have arrived at the right place. Nestled just a few blocks off Interstate 40 in a historic, diminutive former dance hall moved wholesale from neighboring Claude, Texas, Coyote Bluff is tiny. With only about 12 tables packed into its 1,000 square feet, the atmosphere is alive with a loud, friendly hum, a dirt parking lot, and a vintage bathtub floating full of ice and cold beer bottles. The place is amazing!!!! The unique steaming process is really amazing. You have to try the chili cheese fries to go with it. The menu keeps its focus tight, centering around half-pound patties of lean Texas ground beef cooked to order. While traditional options like the Hickory Burger and the Green Chili Cheese Burger are stellar, the undisputed heavyweight titleholder here is the legendary Burger from Hell. I had to try it, my wife opted for the Chicken Fried Steak. Many approach the "Hell Burger" with great trepidation, expecting it to be more of a gimmick built strictly on painful, mouth-numbing heat. Instead, it offers a beautifully layered flavor profile. The beef patty with Tabasco and their proprietary "Coyote Hell Sauce," then smothers it in gooey melted cheese, grilled onions, and fresh, vibrant sautéed jalapeños. It arrived on a toasted onion bun, it lands a solid 7 out of 10 on the heat scale. But rather than scorching your palate, it wraps it in a vinegary, spicy, deeply savory warmth. This place also serves up classic, heavy-hitting Texas roadhouse appetizers: Each of these are amazing sides and are worth of mentioning, First the Cheese Fries with Green Chiles, which I had with my burger and my wife had with her Chicken fried steak, it is served on a massive aluminum platter, these fresh-cut fries are heavily blanketed in melted cheese and mild green chiles. They are a mandatory companion to the burgers.  Other appetizers worth of note, are the Texas Red Chili & Green Chili Stew: The thick, hearty green chili stew is packed with meat and mild green peppers, offering a wonderful warming comfort, especially during cool Panhandle days.  and any of the Fried options ranging from baskets of battered fried pickles, garlic mushrooms, and stuffed jalapeños. Because everything is cooked to order and the dining room is incredibly compact, expect a wait during lunch rushes or weekends. However, that time spent waiting in the dirt lot among locals and passing road-trippers is part of the charm. Coyote Bluff Cafe doesn't try to be anything other than a spectacular, small-town Texas burger joint, and it executes that identity flawlessly. This is a MUST Stop in Texas
