Green Chile bacon cheeseburger and Chile cheese fries

The green chile burger was awesome. Juicy and packed with flavor. The green Chile cheese fries are ok. They'd be real good with a cheese sauce. Service was very friendly and attentive. Awesome ambiance. Reminds me of an outpost. The volume level is moderate.

I can't say enough about the food here. It is extremely tasty. The chicken fried steak is so tender. You can cut it with your forth. The service is absolutely wonderful. They're so attentive. And the atmosphere is very rustic, which I really like.

We spent the night in Amarillo, TX.  I had heard about this place called Green Chili Willy's Grill, so of course we had to try it.  I had heard really good things about it, so I was expecting great things.  We were staying off interstate 40 and the restaurant turned out to be about 11 miles south of us (this better be good).  When we got there we found there was about a 20 - 25 minute wait. That was ok, they have a very large room with seating to accommodate people.  Obviously, they are very popular.  The atmosphere has a very West Texas feel.  Very comfortable.  The waitress was very friendly.  There seemed to be a lot of local regulars here.  Lynette ordered a small version of the traditional chicken fried steak.  They also offer a green chili version.  I ordered a 10 Oz strip steak, medium rare.  With my steak I also ordered green beans and a baked potato.  Texas Toast also comes with the meal.  The Green beans were average, nothing special.  The baked potato was large and came with a generous amount of butter in it.  A cup of cheese and a packet of sour cream came on the side.  The potato was very good.  The steak was cooked properly and was very flavorful. It tasted like it was cooked over wood with a hint of wood flavor coming through.  It wasn't like going to a fancy steak house good, but at $20, it was a good steak.  Lynette's baked potato was just like mine. Her mixed vegetables were average, like something that came frozen in a bag.  Her chicken fried steak was disappointing.  The gravy was good, but her first remark was, "the breading looks dark".  And it was. In fact, in spots it looked burnt, something you don't expect from something deep fried.  Obviously, they were using their cooking oil too long and leaving the chicken fried steak in the oil too long.  My sample bite of the chicken fried steak seemed kind of dried out.  And then there was the Texas Toast.  It wasn't toasted too long, because then the toast would have been too dark and just broken apart.  It wasn't under toasted because then it would have been too soft to be toast.  Instead, the color appeared correct, but the texture was off.  It actually took effort to pull it apart and it was "chewy".  Chewy isn't the texture you expect from toast,  it's more like what you would expect from stale bread that has been toasted.  At the end of the meal we sat a very long time before we saw our waitress and had to ask for the bill.  When paying at the counter I found out they couldn't add a tip to our check.  They actually had to charge my card a second time in order to leave a tip with my card. So was this a terrible experience.....no.  if I were a local, I might come on a somewhat regular basis.  Maybe not for chicken fried steak, but the steak was good and food on other people plates looked good.  But would I travel the 11 miles south of interstate 40 to experience this restaurant......probably not.

Tried this joint out. Staff were friendly. Place is pretty small, you might want to avoid peak dining hours. Green Hatch Chiles and sweet corn were both really tasty, steaks were flavorful but came out cold (?). The chicken fried steaks that were coming out looked really good, I'd like to try it again for lunch someday (Vs suppertime).

The steak was flavorful and tender, the ribs literally fell off the bone, and the brisket was solid and satisfying. The standout for me? The green chili creamed corn and fried okra, absolutely delicious and full of flavor. The cowboy beans were okay... just beans, nothing special compared to the rest of the meal. Service was superb, friendly, attentive, and made the whole experience even better. And of course, the entertainment factor is real! While we were there, we watched someone attempt the famous 72 oz steak challenge. Fun fact: it's actually cheaper to take the challenge and pay less than to just order the steak outright. That alone tells you how legendary this place is. If you're in Amarillo, this is a must-stop for both the food and the atmosphere.

We took a stop here for lunch recently. Our server was okay, pretty bare minimum service and I had to ask for water refills. I liked the fried pickle appetizer, however I felt the pickle spears were too thick. Andreas were good, I really enjoyed the quesadilla and my dad enjoyed his steak. There's a bit of a communal vibe inside, with long tables where you are sat next to other parties. It was fun to talk to other people also going on road trips and talk about where they're coming from and going to.

Aside from the Seafood Fondeaux being a little on the saltier side...Saltgrass Steakhouse is probably the #1 Steakhouse here in Amarillo Texas (just my opinion)...if I had to leave one two word adjective to describe my entire experience today at this Steak House...."Michelin Worthy." Obviously not at Joel Robuchon level, but they sure execute everything like Brick & Mortar Steakhouse would be expected on Rodeo Drive. Perfect Medium Rare, Great baked sweet potatoes with that foam melt butter, garlic butter and grilled shrimp were cherries on top of the pie as a Steak Add-on, phenomenal balsamic vinegarette fused Blue Cheese crumbs Wedge Salad, and the Seafood Fondeaux was as if you married lobster bisque with creme spinach and queso, a superb starter. Premium Service by Isabel, top notch multitasker handling the bar, and multiple fronts. A well put together Southern Cowboy country Interior with very fitting country music. First time at Saltgrass, and what are my last thoughts? Definitely on my recommend list to anyone looking for a casual weekday steak lunch or dinner. Worth the spend! Edit: ***oh...pshhh no wonder, this steakhouse is sister restaurants with Mastros and Morton's~~ It's like the Swatch Group, if Mastros was Breguet, then Morton's would be Omega, and Saltgrass...Longines.
