Loved going here for fried mushroom tofu but going to knock off two stars because of recent visits. My last visit yesterday, I was in the area for a meeting so I decided to stop by early at 10am to pick up tofu for my mom. Seems like Saturday mornings they get very busy. I paid the man $14 and told him I'd come back in 5 minutes. Something I have done the past few times because I don't want to loiter in the small little store when there are so many customers. But when I went back in (there were 3-4 other customers in the small space), he asked for $14 as if I had not paid him already. I guess it got busy with customers and he forgot. So that's an issue I have to deal with going forward. Now I have to worry that if I pay ahead and it gets busy, he will forget that I paid. It's a terrible feeling as if I didn't pay them and as if I am stealing from them or something. My second issue is, there are food items on the counter. I like the banh gio (rice flour snack in the shape of a pyramid: filled with pork, woodear mushroom and a quail egg --- similar to banh bao but the outside is rice flour). First time I got it was months ago, it cost $3.75 which was decent. Then a month ago it was $4.00 -- then a few weeks ago I asked for two and he said $10.00 ($5 each) which surprised me but got it anyways. It's possible they had new prices but that's quite a jump. The issue is there is no price menu for these counter items and they can just upcharge whatever they want. Not hard for them to use a price gun and label these items with their price. That really bugs me. I know other places that label them with a price properly and only charge $4 for them. So going forward, I will stop ordering the banh gio because they can just charge whatever prices they want. I can deal with that. I will just stick to ordering the mushroom tofu my mom likes. But now I have to worry that the seller forgets that I paid so I probably have to stay inside until I get my items. My mom seems to like the smaller cuts of mushroom tofu here compared to their competitors VK foods on Valley but I might have to go there more often. VK only charges $3 for a box of mushroom tofu. Better prices and the customer service. But I will still come back to Thanh Loi Tofu. I just hope they can fix some of these issues going forward. read more

My coworker introduce me to this place. We would always come pick up their fried circle dough. My coworkers love it. However, I don't come here for the fried dough, I come for their pandan tofu pudding in ginger syrup. I like this dessert a lot. The tofu is silky and pour over with the coconut sago cream is super yummy. They do sell it in small and large. I always get the large. The price is great. They also sell tofu and soy milk. I recall coming here years ago but recently decided to make a stop since I was nearby. It is rare to find a good quality tofu shop with loyal business owners. I bought a couple things: pandan and regular sweet soybean milk aka dou jiang 豆浆. The tofu pudding aka dou fu fa 豆腐花 and the banh tieu which was the sesame bread. Everything was made so fresh and good. The pandan flavor is not that strong just fyi in case you think it will be strong flavored. The banh tieu was crispy and soft even when cold. The guy owner picked the good ones and not burnt ones when putting in the paper bag. He even tied up the bag to ensure the items don't fall out. Not only would I want to support small business but I very much appreciate and want to continue supporting loyal and good people operating these small businesses. This place has the worst customer service. We already encountered 3 times already here. First time I came this lady was complaining to my son that the door bell kept ringing because my son was walking back and forth by the door. The Second time I'm here, I gave the lady in change 50 cents in dimes, she complained to me no coins here. Really??? I haven't been back a few years already. Today, I happened to be here again because I wanted soy milk. Anyway, I still give this place a try. I met this old man today, he was so grumpy and not happy. We just ask him if the green color Soymilk was Pandan and he say yes. My husband told him he wanted the regular soy milk and he put away the pandan all grumpy. Then, I told him I don't mind to take the pandan since he look so grumpy. My husband also wanted tofu fã and he gave him the Pandan. We've no idea they have Pandan option. This is a family business and the older couple are the sweetest people. This be my family's go-to tofu place and it has been for the last decade and more. This place has fresh tofu all the time. I know because they pretty much make a certain amount for the day and when they're sold out of the item, that's it! I love getting the following items: - Tofu in ginger soup (hot aaand cold, which is in the fridge) I would get cold in the summer because of the weather - ^ but Pandan flavor tofu, which comes with coconut milk with sago as well - Fried tofu (I get regular sized tofu and also bigger ones to cut in triangle shapes to cook stuffed tofu) - Fried Tofu with black wood ear mushrooms (bombbb) - Cha Oc (Vietnamese pork roll with escargot, think Cha Hue, but with escargot or regular cha with seasoning in it) They season this very well. It's super fragrant since they use a lot of kaffir lime leaves and the price is honestly great for the portion! Best Cha Oc in SGV! - Soy milk, which they also have pandan flavor as well! A little mom-and-pop shop in the plaza. It honestly looks a little shabby but the products are always fresh! I always come here to buy fried tofu, soy milk (they have seeetened and unsweetened and pandan flavored one), Vietnamese meatloaf (Cha), and their fried doughnut (the best in SGV). Sometimes they have some Vietnamese dessert/snack. But of course, the best is always the freshly friend smooth tofu and the silky soy milk. Asian soy milk always tastes different than the packaged ones they sell in the groceries. You can taste the soy better, especially when it's still hot. It's a family business so you'll see various family members at the cashier at different times. The older gentleman is always super nice and friendly. I asked for Soy Milk, no sugar and he had freshly made piping hot bottle! I want to next time try their fried tofu with mushroom. Seems many local Vietnamese come here as I waited in line. Do not recommend. Very rude service. After purchasing the several tofu desserts, we noticed that they did not give us the syrup (which goes with the desert). My husband asked for it and the older man ignored him and walked away after taking his money. When my husband politely asked again, the older man did not say one word and finally gave 1 small container. We then asked if this would be enough for the amount of tofu we purchased as we purchased lots of Tofu. The older man yelled "NO MORE!" This is my go to place for perfectly sweetened soy milk (not too sweet, not too bland, just right!!) I religiously will only buy soy milk from this store because I can't seem to find soy milk that tastes as fresh and delicious as the soy milk found here! Not only that but their tofu pudding is so silky and delicious, it's like the ultimate summertime dessert, no scratch that, it's a solid dessert for anytime. BUT THE MAIN EVENT: the fried tofu. Heaven sent I say! My family gets the fried tofu with the mushroom from here for yearrrrrs. They're delicious eaten right away, but also delicious used to make other dishes with. This place makes me happy when I have tofu cravings. Everything is so inexpensive, I was able to get yogurt, Vietnamese ham with clam & basil, tofu pudding with ginger syrup and a huuuge order of fried tofu with mushroom and it was all for only $8!!! I love the fried tofu with mushroom, it's so tasty, the texture is just right, crispy on the outside yet soft and moist inside. The tofu pudding with ginger syrup came out piping hot, it is soft, silky and delicious, the ginger syrup accompanies it perfectly. I ventured out and tried the clam ham which was so tasty! It has pieces of clams, basil and I think lemongrass and other herbs in it, a yummy snack for clam lovers. They also have other desserts and of course soymilk and many variety of tofu.
