#24. Tom Yum Gai (Spicy Chicken Soup) #13. Beef Salad lunch special

I forgot to ask my servers name but she had shorter hair and she was amazing! It was a busy day but we got sat promptly and all the food came out so quick! Music wasn't loud and overall another great experience. Service was top notch. I was craving tom yum and it was so good! Came out hot and the right amount of spice that I wanted. The beef salad lunch special was the perfect amount and very tasty. I also got the jasmine hot tea as my drink and it was steeped well. Would come back again!

Thai Basil is located in a plaza in Fullerton -- parking was very easy due to the big lot. I also used their website to place my order during work, which made things super convenient! The service was incredibly friendly when I went. However, I do not see myself returning because the food itself was pretty bland. To put it into perspective, the Kra Pao was lacking a lot of color and flavor. I had to put a lot of hot sauce on it to make it taste decent. It does the job for quick thai food but I wouldn't particularly recommend it.

Four of us celebrated our birthdays with lunch on Monday. We shared Wonton soup, Stir-fried snow peas with chicken, Bangkok noodles with beef, Pineapple curry with chicken, and Pad See Ew with chicken. Three kinds of rice were available: white, brown, and sticky. I really liked the wonton soup filled with wontons, chicken, shrimp, baby corn, carrots, and choy sum. My Pad See Ew was delicious. I got to sample the other yummy dishes, too. Entree portions were good for the price. The staff was pleasant and allowed us to enjoy a leisurely meal. Thai Basil is not far from the 57 Freeway, and there is ample parking in the shopping center lot.

Came on a weekday a little after opening and we were seated right away. There's quite a bit of seating, which is nice, and the staff here are friendly and kind. The only downside was that there was no fan or ac, so it was pretty hot inside. My friend and I both got a Thai Tea, and it was so good! It was strong and exactly what I've been craving for a while! I also liked that they gave us to go cups for the rest of our drinks to take home. We also got Crab Rangoons to share, and they were really delicious. Very hot, crunchy, creamy, and a good size. I got the Combination Fried Rice, and it was yummy. A little pricey for the portion compared to the spot I usually go to, but it was flavorful and good! There was a nice amount of meat and onions in it. Overall, I had a pleasant experience, and I would like to try their noodle dishes next time if I'm in the area!

Always great, fast, efficient service I always order the beef salad and Pad see ew. Consistently yummy/ They will make the beef salad to your spice comfort level. No frills interior but clean and comfy booths.

So flavorful and always great service, love coming here when we're in the area! We got the pad Thai, pad see ew, and crab Rangoon on today's visit.

I enjoyed the pad thai with chicken here ($14.95). The flavor of the noodles was a good mix of savory and sweet tastes. I enjoyed the texture of the noodles but wished they provided a bigger portion since I felt hungry at the time. I'm not a fan of bean sprouts on my food and asked for them on the side since I think they distract from the main flavor. They provided the bean sprouts to us before our meals, so it was like a little snack. My family had ordered other meals in the menu; this restaurant offers a wide selection of choices. However, I didn't enjoy their prik king, in which the red chili paste didn't cook and blend well with the green beans. In general, I feel like the safe choices for this restaurant are the most popular Thai foods. Service was fine when we went. Since the restaurant is close to a state university, we saw people come over to celebrate graduations. Despite this, the restaurant didn't get too busy.

THE BACKSTORY: I have been going here off and on for about 15 years and, like an old flame, I have a love/hate relationship with it. When it's on point, the food is delicious! When it not, it's a massive disappointment. This review will focus on our latest visit. THE FOOD: Their menu is pretty extensive and offers almost everything you could want in a Thai restaurant. Our party of 6 ordered a bunch of dishes to share family style. Here's how each one fared: * Beef salad - It was excellent. The ingredients were all fresh and it had that good balance between the sour sauce and savory meat. * Tom yum gai - This hot-and-sour soup with chicken and mushroom was surprisingly bland. In the past, it's been too salty. Clearly the cooks have have consistency issues. * Angel wings - We actually ordered the buffalo wings, but instead got this appetizer (chicken wings stuffed with glass noddles and shrimp). We were going to complain about getting the wrong dish, but no server was nearby and we were too hungry at this point. Fortunately, it was good. * Pad Woon Sen - These glass noodles came loaded with veggies and chicken. Flavor was good, though there weren't as much noodles as we're used it. * Thai fried rice - A standard fried rice dish; nothing to write home about. * Spicy scallops - This was the big disappointment, as it came with only 6 pieces of scallops for $19.95. The cooks tried to hide this fact by piling bamboo shoots over top. Worst off, it wasn't really that spicy or flavorful. THE SERVICE: During my latest outing, the service was mixed. One server was quite helpful and attentive, while another one seemed annoyed anytime we asked for something. The third server was decent, but never smiled and didn't say much. Now, I say this knowing that customer service at most authentic Asian restaurants is a low priority. (I'm Asian and grew up in this culture.) But I raise it here because I have been to Thai Basil when the service has been amazing (clearly their A Team was working) and when the service has been utterly horrible. So, clearly management needs to do a better job at training. THE SETTING: It's a good sized restaurant, though you might have to wait a while if you have a party of 5 or more because there isn't a lot of space for bigger groups. Our party of 6 was seated near the front, where it's rather cramped. If you're a party of 4 or fewer, no problems -- they have plenty of comfy booths. Fortunately, it's beautifully decorated, the bathrooms are clean, and there's usually parking in the large lot (it's in the same strip mall as the Dollar Tree and Smart and Final). THE CONCLUSION: I really want to give Thai Basil a 4 out of 5, but based on my recent outing here, I have to lower it to a 3 out of 5. The subpar customer service and inconsistent food does not justify the increased prices. If we go back, it will be only because 1) I want to give them another chance or 2) I have no better options. But in my heart, I WANT them to get better because I have great memories eating here with my then-girlfriend/now-wife. So, Thai Basil, if you're reading this, please train your cooks and servers better, and I'll be back!

Why can't I place an order on Yelp anymore?

I am not sure but they take order over phone calls.

How are the gluten free options?

Their Gluten-Free Options I believe are minimal as they do use SOY SAUCES in most of their dishes. I am planning on going there in the next week or so and will ask.…

I was having my lunch and she comes to remove the hot sauce away from our table. Mind you, the restaurant was not busy for almost 12 pm, which is unusual. I felt rushed by her when I am clearly eating and she asks if "I'm done". That was my breaking point. We go to lunch to relax and enjoy a meal. Not feel rushed. I told her she was being too pushy and asked her to go away. She walks away and as soon as she is behind me, she says sorrryyyyy with an attitude. That was uncalled for. When I went to give the other guy feedback, she was right there, being rude, listening in. This is NOT the service we have ever received. We average about 500 dollars a week in lunches between clients and different colleagues of mine. You can consider that revenue gone and multiple clients lost. What happened to the other servers? The muscular guy, the older lady. This girl thinks her behavior is acceptable. She just cost you guys quite a bit of sales monthly!

We started with the Blue Butterfly Pea Flower drink, and it honestly tasted like water with syrup. I asked our server about it and was told it was honey. He did offer to replace it, which I appreciated, but the interactions throughout the meal felt awkward and not particularly welcoming. We also waited quite a while to order while tables that arrived after us were helped quickly... The coconut shrimp was good and probably gave me too much hope for what was coming next. Crispy, flavorful, and paired with good sauces. The Thai tea was also really good. Unfortunately, the Panang seafood curry was a big letdown. The portion was small with a lot of rice, the squid was extremely chewy, and the catfish had a very strong fishy taste. There were also leaves left throughout the curry that were unpleasantly bitter when eaten. The pad kra pao was another disappointment. I was actually excited to see it on the menu since not every Thai restaurant around here offers it. We ordered medium, but this was WAY beyond what I would consider medium. I enjoy spicy food, but there's a difference between heat that enhances a dish and heat that keeps you reaching for water. The portion was also small compared with the amount of rice, and the fried egg was overcooked with basically no runny yolk. Presentation was nice, and there were definitely a few things I enjoyed, but between the portions, inconsistent food, service, and overall experience, I left disappointed. For Thai food in the area, I'd personally rather make the drive elsewhere. 3/10.

Note on the menu their dishes do not include proteins, you have to add those as extra with an extra cost. We ordered the curry puffs since we read about them in the reviews. I ordered pad see ewe with broccoli on the side to give to my hubby. They use American broccoli here and not Chinese broccoli. Hubby ordered Pad Thai. We also wanted mango sticky rice but they were sold out for the day. We both ordered cups of water which were served in small plastic cups. Asked for lemon slices and received lime slices. The Sriracha and Soy sauce arrived in small packets and they brought us metal plates and silverware. Food came out in a decent amount of time. It's made to order so you do need to wait some. The restaurant was clean and not too noisy. The curry puff was a bit dry inside and not juicy at all. The crust was flaky and crispy and we enjoyed that. We came here at night so maybe if it was earlier in the day it would have tasted better? My Pad Se Ewe tasted good and I appreciated they were able to do the broccoli separately. My hubby liked his Pad Thai as well. The portion sizes were ok and we both finished our plates. If you plan on coming here during lunch or dinner time I imagine you will need to order it to go as it's so small inside. When we got there the first table was full, we took the middle tables and another party of 4 came in and took the last table. If we are in the area and it's not busy we will definitely return. However, if it's busy we will go elsewhere as we would not be able to sit and enjoy our meal there due to lack of seating.
