The chicken was seasoned so well. The shrimp pad Thai was delicious, and the shrimp were cooked perfectly. We also got the green chicken curry with eggplant, which was so flavorful. My husband and I agreed it's one of the best curries we've had! The papaya salad was refreshing with a little spice. Since they're known for their Thai style chicken and rice, we tried that too. The fried chicken was my favorite, it was wonderfully crispy. We finished with Thai tea and a galaxy honey lemonade, both of which were refreshing and not too sweet. I really wanted to like Luck Gai Café because I thought I had found another hidden gem, but unfortunately this was a disappointing experience. We started with the Blue Butterfly Pea Flower drink, and it honestly tasted like water with syrup. I asked our server about it and was told it was honey. He did offer to replace it, which I appreciated, but the interactions throughout the meal felt awkward and not particularly welcoming. We also waited quite a while to order while tables that arrived after us were helped quickly... The coconut shrimp was good and probably gave me too much hope for what was coming next. Crispy, flavorful, and paired with good sauces. The Thai tea was also really good. Unfortunately, the Panang seafood curry was a big letdown. The portion was small with a lot of rice, the squid was extremely chewy, and the catfish had a very strong fishy taste. There were also leaves left throughout the curry that were unpleasantly bitter when eaten. The pad kra pao was another disappointment. I was actually excited to see it on the menu since not every Thai restaurant around here offers it. We ordered medium, but this was WAY beyond what I would consider medium. I enjoy spicy food, but there's a difference between heat that enhances a dish and heat that keeps you reaching for water. The portion was also small compared with the amount of rice, and the fried egg was overcooked with basically no runny yolk. Presentation was nice, and there were definitely a few things I enjoyed, but between the portions, inconsistent food, service, and overall experience, I left disappointed. As for the Tom Yum soup, it tasted very sweet and did not have the typical tart and tangy flavor as we are accustomed to tom yum soup (eg with lemongrass, etc). Service wise, we experienced with two different servers. The initial server who took our orders seemed to be impatient and did not want to be there. Later on when first server was on lunch break, another server came by and she was very attentive and approachable/friendly. This is my favorite spot in OC to get Hainan chicken! I like how there's the option to get the chicken both regular and fried - I personally liked the fried better but thought both were delicious. The garlic rice also tasted great and complemented the chicken well. I also thought it was very unique how they give 4 different sauces that you can eat it with. We also got the Panaang curry, which I would recommend if you prefer curry that's on the sweeter side. We came on a Friday night and didn't have to wait to be seated. We were given the sauces on the side but none of the sauces really matched for me. - Wing of Gai (3.5/5) I was hoping for some crispiness even though it was covered in sauce but the wings were soggy and the sauce was just not for me. - Dynamite Dumpling (2.5/5) The dumpling wrapper tasted off (not chewy) and the sauce tasted more like soy sauce, no chili oil. I have to say the few times I've been here the food has disappointed me every time. It barely resembles the authentic thing and you have better luck eating elsewhere. Their beef pad thai lacked flavor and was drowning in oil. The beef was either old or from the worst supplier as it was chewy and sour. We doused the plate in spice to give it any flavor and mask the foul taste of the beef. For a place specializing in chicken, it's just average. When a huge brown spider nearly went onto my 4-year old son from the ceiling, we explained it to him. He did not apologize. He did not care. The Hainan chicken (poached and fried) was subpar. Poached chicken was lukewarm, seemed undercooked and masked in sauce. The fried chicken, the batter was undercooked and was nothing special. Again, they have a lot of "sauces", but that's to mask the lack of flavor. The Tom Yum soup was very average... came out lukewarm temperature, overly sour, and had inedible leaves all throughout. Portion was tiny as well. Finally, our Pad See Yew was small portion and very average and overly sauced. Again, it's the theme with sauces. Cleanliness. We need to hold restaurants like this accountable for cleanliness. We had a HUGE brown spider come down from the spider webs on the ceilings (which I observed) and nearly come into our food and soup. My son was sitting right there! Additionally, there were small fruit or food flies EVERYWHERE near our food. Unacceptable. She actually handed me utensils and my meal to the table, and handed my food as well. I like how they offered a variety of sauces and listed which tasted better with what. I also liked how they added a small side salad and soup, which is a pretty nice set. It also had cartilage in every piece so not sure if that was normal... The fried chicken tasted better, has more unique textures to eating it, but the batter itself gets boring the more you eat it, or at least it just tastes cheap. This hidden gem completely exceeded my expectations! The wife is originally from Thailand and they seem to visit often, so not only is the food out of this world but he can tell you everything you want to know about it, from the protein that pairs best with a dish to how it differs from similar dishes in Asia. The ambiance is inviting, authentic, and a tad quirky, just like the service, but in the best possible way. They have patio seating also. 8 of us went so we got to try a little bit of almost everything. Every bite of every dish was outstanding. I couldn't stop eating my friend's yellow curry. Solid hainan chicken spot! The restaurant is in a small plaza under the bridge -- feels secluded and intimate. We all got the half & half hainan chicken (poached and fried). I usually prefer poached hainan chicken, but here it was a bit mild on flavor. The fried chicken was surprisingly good. I appreciated that there are 4 different sauces and a variety of chiles (jalapenos, thai, dry flakes etc.)--mixing flavors was really fun! My gf was craving thai food after a convention so we found this place and came over. It's located in the very corner of an essentially dead at night plaza so parking bear the entrance is recommended. We got a boat noodle, crispy tofu and mighty combo. Both the boat noodle and mighty combo were better than I expected. The boat noodle had very chewy noodles and the soup base was quite tasty. There was a generous amount of meat in it too. My favorite was the mighty combo. Both the crispy and regular chicken were juicy and retained a strong chicken flavor. They also cooked the rice the way I like it similar to hainan chicken rice, a big plus. The crispy tofu was what I expected. They gave a pretty generous portion of it too, which my gf and I snacked away while waiting for our main dishes. Overall, great food and definitely a spot to come back to. This was such a disappointment. We were trying the Candlelight Concert series at the Richard Nixon Library (that part of the night was amazing). So we looked up restaurants nearby. Thai sounded great and this place had a 4.7 with over 1000 reviews. My family and I can't see why. The food was mediocre, not terrible, but a step below so-so. That would have been a 3 star level, but it was seriously some bad service. I had to finish a call, so my wife and daughters went in before, ordering for us. My wife and daughters tell me, it's as though the waitress is mad at us. Sure enough, everytime she's at the table, it feels curt and angry. It's almost funny, almost, how strange this behavior is. My wife and I did service work through college, we ALWAYS treat servers with respect. Our daughters, naturally kind already, still have had good behavior in restaurants emphasized. Now here is why I'm making a deal of it. Anyone can have a bad day and take it out on others. When I go to pay, she becomes all sunshine and rainbows. Like now she better be nice to be sure she gets her tip and zi didn't see my wife and daughters dealt with abrasively She probably thought I was cheap and good thing she was rude. We were looking forward to Luck Gai Cafe but unfortunately it was more disappointing than expected. This is more of a fusion restaurant and you should not expect authentic Thai food or Hainan chicken. Here are the ratings each person gave to their dish: - Tom Yum tofu 0/5: no tom yum flavor, not sour at all. Basically boiled tofu in a dark soup sauce - poached chicken 3/5 - sauces not traditional and flavor was meh - Pad Thai 2/5: no flavor and dry, with raw bean sprouts - Drunken noodles: 3/5 - very saucy but not authentic if you know what I mean.
