It's one of those hidden gems tucked into a quiet corner of an older mini plaza -- the kind of place you might overlook if you're just driving by. But don't let the location fool you, because the food truly shines. We ordered the Pad See Ew with chicken, basil fried rice, chicken satay, and the crab appetizer with cream cheese. Everything was delicious, but the crab appetizer really stole the show. Perfectly crispy on the outside and creamy on the inside -- I'm still craving it! Came on a weekday a little after opening and we were seated right away. There's quite a bit of seating, which is nice, and the staff here are friendly and kind. The only downside was that there was no fan or ac, so it was pretty hot inside. My friend and I both got a Thai Tea, and it was so good! It was strong and exactly what I've been craving for a while! I also liked that they gave us to go cups for the rest of our drinks to take home. We also got Crab Rangoons to share, and they were really delicious. Very hot, crunchy, creamy, and a good size. I got the Combination Fried Rice, and it was yummy. A little pricey for the portion compared to the spot I usually go to, but it was flavorful and good! Thai Basil is located in a plaza in Fullerton -- parking was very easy due to the big lot. I also used their website to place my order during work, which made things super convenient! The service was incredibly friendly when I went. However, I do not see myself returning because the food itself was pretty bland. To put it into perspective, the Kra Pao was lacking a lot of color and flavor. I had to put a lot of hot sauce on it to make it taste decent. I enjoyed the pad thai with chicken here ($14.95). The flavor of the noodles was a good mix of savory and sweet tastes. I enjoyed the texture of the noodles but wished they provided a bigger portion since I felt hungry at the time. I'm not a fan of bean sprouts on my food and asked for them on the side since I think they distract from the main flavor. They provided the bean sprouts to us before our meals, so it was like a little snack. My family had ordered other meals in the menu; this restaurant offers a wide selection of choices. However, I didn't enjoy their prik king, in which the red chili paste didn't cook and blend well with the green beans. In general, I feel like the safe choices for this restaurant are the most popular Thai foods. Service was fine when we went. THE BACKSTORY: I have been going here off and on for about 15 years and, like an old flame, I have a love/hate relationship with it. When it's on point, the food is delicious! When it not, it's a massive disappointment. This review will focus on our latest visit. THE FOOD: Their menu is pretty extensive and offers almost everything you could want in a Thai restaurant. Our party of 6 ordered a bunch of dishes to share family style. Here's how each one fared: * Beef salad - It was excellent. The ingredients were all fresh and it had that good balance between the sour sauce and savory meat. * Tom yum gai - This hot-and-sour soup with chicken and mushroom was surprisingly bland. In the past, it's been too salty. Clearly the cooks have have consistency issues. * Angel wings - We actually ordered the buffalo wings, but instead got this appetizer (chicken wings stuffed with glass noddles and shrimp). We were going to complain about getting the wrong dish, but no server was nearby and we were too hungry at this point. Fortunately, it was good. * Pad Woon Sen - These glass noodles came loaded with veggies and chicken. Flavor was good, though there weren't as much noodles as we're used it. * Thai fried rice - A standard fried rice dish; nothing to write home about. * Spicy scallops - This was the big disappointment, as it came with only 6 pieces of scallops for $19.95. The cooks tried to hide this fact by piling bamboo shoots over top. Worst off, it wasn't really that spicy or flavorful. THE SERVICE: During my latest outing, the service was mixed. One server was quite helpful and attentive, while another one seemed annoyed anytime we asked for something. The third server was decent, but never smiled and didn't say much. Now, I say this knowing that customer service at most authentic Asian restaurants is a low priority. (I'm Asian and grew up in this culture.) But I raise it here because I have been to Thai Basil when the service has been amazing (clearly their A Team was working) and when the service has been utterly horrible. So, clearly management needs to do a better job at training. THE SETTING: It's a good sized restaurant, though you might have to wait a while if you have a party of 5 or more because there isn't a lot of space for bigger groups. Our party of 6 was seated near the front, where it's rather cramped. If you're a party of 4 or fewer, no problems -- they have plenty of comfy booths. Fortunately, it's beautifully decorated, the bathrooms are clean, and there's usually parking in the large lot (it's in the same strip mall as the Dollar Tree and Smart and Final). THE CONCLUSION: I really want to give Thai Basil a 4 out of 5, but based on my recent outing here, I have to lower it to a 3 out of 5. The subpar customer service and inconsistent food does not justify the increased prices. If we go back, it will be only because 1) I want to give them another chance or 2) I have no better options. But in my heart, I WANT them to get better because I have great memories eating here with my then-girlfriend/now-wife. So, Thai Basil, if you're reading this, please train your cooks and servers better, and I'll be back! read more

Their menu offers a wide variety of options, but that doesn't mean they compromise on quality--every dish we tried was so flavorful and well-made. My favorites were the classic Pad See Ew, the Shrimp Spring Roll, and the Tom Yum Gai soup. Each dish had bold, authentic flavors and was cooked to perfection. I feel torn about this rating/review because the staff are super friendly and the food was decently tasty, but the prices are just a little too overpriced in my opinion. I forgot to take a picture of my recent trip, but I ordered a stir fried tofu dish and I thought maybe some veggies would come with, but it was straight tofu, a few basil leaves and garlic sauce for $16. They are really clear that rice is a separate purchase, so just prepare to pay extra for rice even when you order curry or a dish that warrants rice accompaniment! I didn't end up ordering rice so that's why it was reallllly hard for me to justify paying $21 ($16 plus tip and tax) for a dish I could easily make at home for a fraction of the price. I've been here before but ate family style and split the total cost, so never really noticed the price for an individual portion. Ambiance is cute tho with Thai decor around the room. All in all, maybe consider going with others and eating family style here. But idk, maybe I'm more stingy and don't believe in paying $20 for tofu? I have been a loyal customer of this restaurant since 2005 and have always supported and spoken highly of it. That is why this experience was especially disappointing. It is sad to leave a review like this. A couple of months ago, I ordered a beef and meatball noodle soup. While eating, I found a small black bug floating in the broth. It clearly had wings and legs. I immediately called the waitress over to inform her. Instead of apologizing or addressing the issue professionally, I was met with anger and visible frustration from the staff. Rather than taking responsibility, they attempted to gaslight me and insisted it was not a bug. I was made to feel like I was lying. Only after I pointed out the wings and legs did they reluctantly acknowledge it. By then, the damage was already done. Yes, they offered a replacement -- but after being treated with hostility and disrespect, I no longer felt comfortable eating there. Let me be clear: I was not looking for a free meal. I was looking for basic accountability and respectful customer service. Mistakes can happen in any kitchen. What is unacceptable is how the situation was handled. The current staff's behavior was rude, dismissive, and unprofessional. Customers should never be made to feel like they are a burden for raising a legitimate concern especially regarding food safety and public health. This experience has seriously changed my perception of a place I once respected. I hope management reevaluates both hygiene standards and, more importantly, how customers are treated. read more

I enjoyed the ambience. They have Time music playing in the background and a really nice decor featuring Thai decorations. I ordered the tom yum gung soup with white rice and some papaya salad. Both the soup and salad were created at the mils level. I can't handle Thai heat. It gets too spicy for me. But if you can handle the heat, go for it. I have eaten food at the medium level before. Pretty good Thai! Been coming here or ordering takeout for over 7 years, and the food is always good. Service can be mixed but for the most part the staff is nice and efficient. They have a great lunch special, but other items at dinner are affordable as well. Go-to dishes are always the Pad See Ew, Ground chicken with Chili Sauce and Mint leaves, Sweet and Sour Fish, Tom Yum, and Green Curry. All 5/5. Papaya salad is also solid. I've had other items that aren't as good, like the fried rice or the kung pao trio (it was overly salty but they fixed when we told them, flavor just wasn't great), but I just don't order those items again. I've been coming here since my college days at CSUF, which was about 8 years ago. A lot has changed since. The quality and the service has been inconsistent in the past few years. Most of the food has been decent, except for the tom yum soup. Tom yum soup is usually very flavorful, but it came out tasting watered down. I initially ordered angel wings, but realized the wings I actually wanted were labeled 'buffalo wings', which are not your typical wings that you'd find at TGI Fridays. I asked the waitress to cancel the angel wings, which are stuffed wings, but she still came out with the angel wings anyway. The waitress seemed to have a bad that day and was not as friendly. What seems to be consistent is the Thai beef salad. So yummy and can't go wrong. It pairs great with pad woon sen noodles! Ambiance has your typical Thai decor with elephants around the restaurant. This is our favorite Thai restaurant in the area, we are yet to try something we do not like. We came for a late lunch around 3pm and were able to just walk in with no wait. We noticed that they have a new item on the menu, the crab rangoons, and we decided to start with that. They are really good and would highly recommend them. They come with a sweet and sour sauce to dip. For entrees we had: chop suey, duck curry, crispy chow mein and a side of small egg fried rice. Everything was delicious! I've been here a few times and the food was usually decent with a couple of times where the tom yum was pretty bland. I enjoy the selection as they do have an extensive list including Rad Na which is one of my personal favorites. Service here generally has been good and I haven't received bad service here. Most of the times they are attentive and check-in with us sometimes if we needed anything. The place is fairly spacious and pretty clean. This is seriously a hidden gem Thai food! They have some special menu that are extremely good and I wouldn't have known it if not for the recommendations from my server. The beef panang curry was slow cooked for 6-8 hours and I could totally feel that because the beef was so tender. The curry was thick and really yummy. The fish cake starter was also made in house. The paste texture was just like what I had in Thailand. Other dishes we had were great too, the fried rice, tom kha, etc. This is like a local, homemade place that made me feel cozy. We got all of our entrees except 1 and while 2 us could begin eating, the third person in our party had no entree. We waited and waited and finally were able to flag down a waiter. No one had come out to check on us as they were rushing to close. They told us the kitchen was closed and that our waiter never put in our crying tiger order and that our waiter also already left. We had even ordered a side of rice for it and gotten that, but no entree. We were really upset and our third party member was hungry. This was really disappointing as the waiter repeated our order back to us WITH the crying tiger. We waited far too long until being told that it never went through and they wouldn't make it because they were closing. Very disappointing. read more

Terrible food, terrible service, terrible attitudes. We called to say we 'll be there at 8:15 and we were there at 8:20. Posted hours are till 9 PM but we were told that we need to order fast as the kitchen was closing in 5 minutes. We ordered as we were hungry but it was a disaster. The food looked like it was just thrown on the plates. Pork in the fried rice was clumped together. The Khao suey had no flavor except overpowering turmeric. Ginger fish was the worst I've ever had. The shrimp was floating in water not a curry. The crispy noodle dish had soggy noodles. The only thing decent was the mango and stick rice. The mangoes were sweet and delicious. I asked them the name of the mango and they tried to sell me mangoes at $4 each!!! I picked from my local Asian store for $0.99 each today. Worst part- As we were eating, they started mopping the floor and taking loudly in their language. We could tell they wanted us out. I always grab thai food here since it is closed by to where I lived before. I can order online through their website and pick up which is nice. My go-to order is either their pad thai or pad see-ew. The flavor is always on point!!! One thing about them is they do not mess up making your food taste flavorful and great. I had a chance to try their seafood pad thai and it included shrimps, scallop, fish, mussel, calamari (many great choices). It is a bit on the pricier side though! Their pad see-ew is yummy!!
