I usually don't go to fancy restaurants because fanciness always rubs me the wrong way especially when it comes to the prices and the interior. But I went here to take my mom for mother's day dinner and I always wanted to try out this place because I heard alot of good things about it. I unfortunately didn't get a chance to take pictures of the food but here's my thoughts: Food: The main attraction was the meat it surpassed my expectations but before I discuss that, I would like to talk about the foods from the salad bar. Everything was pretty delicious, specifically the scalloped potatoes and the salmon which were both seasoned well. Now the meat, now I typically don't eat medium rare meats but it was cooked to perfection and it was juicy and savory in my mouth. My personal favorites are the BBQ chicken, Pork, Rib and the Sirloin. (10/10) Service: The servers were pretty friendly and on top of things especially for a place that is often packed on special occasions. However the servers who delivered us the meat, they were quick and very considerate on giving me the meat. (9.5/10) Interior: The inside looked like something from a PF Changs with the chandeliers and the nice looking red walls as well as an organized salad bar. But it's no PF Changs and this place looks beautiful than Changs. (9.5/10) Overall I am not a big fan of fancy/super nice restaurants because of it's overpriced options, but this place was worth every dollar and I would recommend it for special occasions and birthdays or whatever occasion. 9.75/10

Salad bar

Very much surprised about this place! I wasn't expecting much since it's a chain but it was actually very delicious. The cocktails were yummy and strong. The salad bar has so many fun and unique options, I basically got a charcuterie board from it. The meats are fun and I love how they walk around and serve them all at random. The only downside is you can't really choose how you want the meats cooked as they are pre-done before coming to the table. Overall, the food, drinks, and table service was great.

Brought me the wrong drink, after being reminded he had forgotten it, and didn't bother to take my empty wine glass

We hadn't had a chance to come back here in years so we thought we'd have a date night. My husband and I arrived around 4pm hoping to be early birds but there were already a bunch of people waiting. With it just being the two of us, they were able to fit us in the back. They brought out bread and such for the table but didn't take our drunk order for 20 min. We had already made it to the food bar and eaten a bit. I requested a couple glasses of cabernet. Our server came back with one glass. I explained I had asked for two so he went and got another. We enjoyed most of what we tried from the food bar but stayed away for a few things because not all had labels. I had a separate plate for my meat as I didn't want to mix it all so when I was done with the food bar plate I had to stop someone to ask for it to be taken or to show me if there was an area I should put it. Then was waiting for the meat. Being in the back meant we could see all the meat we wanted but it barely made it to us and when it did they constantly just carved the outside bark when I told them I preferred the red meat. Only one person asked if we were waiting on something particular, and it was a carver not our server. I then ordered another drink figuring we would be there awhile. About a half hour later the server asked us if we needed anything, I remined him I had ordered a drink. When I finally got the drink it was wrong but I didn't bother to say anything because I was so frustrated. Things I learned this time around that will probably keep us from coming back: If you don't have a group, you don't get attention and it's not worth it. There should either be a place to put unwanted dishes or the servers should ask if they can get anything out of the way when they check on the table and they should never leave an empty glass on the table when they have brought you a new drink. The carvers should ask what the customer wants before carving. My husband doesn't mind the crust but it is not for me.

A solid 3.5 rounded up. I'm sure you all know the deal: Unlimited grilled meats, a salad bar, and a selection of hot sides. I hadn't been here in about 10 years so I forgot what the food was like. The salad bar was clean and well-stocked with a good variety of fresh selections. I'm not huge on salads, but I thoroughly enjoyed mine since they have flavorful, well-seasoned options like couscous, pico de gallo, etc. The area with the hot sides left much to be desired. The potatoes au gratin were watery and gross, but I enjoyed the rice and black beans. I guess those are hard to mess up. The table sides (mashed potatoes, fries, and Brazilian cheese bread) were delicious. The bananas were not good. They were under ripe and couldn't be saved by the cinnamon sugar coating. The main attraction - the meats - were on point. Maybe I missed it on the salad bar or maybe they don't have it, but some chimichurri or other sauces would've been a nice accompaniment to the steaks. Our server asked about the temperature at which we liked our meats cooked, but that was a pointless inquiry since we were offered everything from rare to well done throughout the whole night. It would be nice if they had a placard for patrons to place on the table to indicate preferred meat temps. Also, our server was very present and attentive in the beginning but disappeared for awhile which was frustrating since we wanted to order more drinks. I wish he would've replaced our bone-laden plates with clean ones much earlier during our dinner. The wine options were scarce and I didn't find the cocktails to be very exciting, but I ordered one of my signatures, a lemon drop martini, and it was perfect. Random observation, but the restaurant is decorated with many floor-length mirrors, and they were impeccably clean to the point you felt like you could walk right through. All-in-all, it's another chain restaurant with slightly better than mediocre grub and okay service. Nothing to write home about which is why I'm writing here. ;-)

Friday 7pm 2/9/24 Nice looking restaurant. We had no reservation which is typically required but they were able to seat us anyway. This restaurant definitely could be a nice place for a date but I also noticed quite a few families. I came here just for the salad bar. It was pretty good. There were quite a few options of cheese and other items. I ordered the salad bar which came with soup (lobster bisque) they also had some kind of potato soup too but I didn't try it. Everything was ok. Waitress was very nice. Probably won't be going back anytime soon because of the $30 price tag but it was cool. No complaints.

Meat overload! Well I believe most people know what to expect from a Brazilian Steakhouse. Unlimited food from a salad/side bar with wait staff dressed up carrying flame broiled meats on sword skewers (Espetos Brasileiros). This location was comfortable as the tables are spaced nicely with a nice calming atmosphere. Our waiter was nice, polite and attentive to our needs. The bathrooms are clean and there's plenty of parking in the mall's parking lot. One ding on our dinner experience was that some meats were a bit chewy, definitely not prime meat. I don't like wasting food but some cuts of meat were unpleasant to eat.

Apparently you get sides that aren't ordered. Mashed potatoes, fries, bananas and bread

So. Much. Food. First, I was there on a Monday night and it was empty. Just a few other tables of diners. The waitstaff were attentive and friendly. Kept drinks full and continued to check in to see if we needed anything. The salad bar is large. But don't fill up on it! There were lettuces, vegetables (green beans, asparagus, all cold), different charcuterie items, cheeses, salads (except: bean salad). There is also a hot bar. I don't remember everything that was there, but the mushrooms were VERY good!! They also have a signature soup, but I did not try that. I was saving my room for the meat! Do make a note that the chimichurri is very spicy. I tried it twice bc I normally love chimichurri, but it made me cough from the spice both times I tried it. If you haven't been here, this is meat-a-palooza. You have a little coaster that is red on one side and green on the other. When you have the green side up the meat handlers will come by with the huge skewers of meat to slice some for you. When you put the coaster to red they aren't supposed to come by; however they kept coming. I don't understand how they could see the coasters and when you are with a group there is always someone with a green coaster. So many meat options. I kept mostly to the steaks. I did try the ribs and they were ok, but not the best and definitely not as good as the beef. Seriously some delicious beef options. The picachu (I know that's wrong but don't remember what it's called) was soooooooooo good. Definitely give it a try. Heard from my friends that the chicken wasn't that good. I didn't try it. I also did not try the sausage that they seem to push the hardest. Also note, they will bring some sides to the table. Mashed potatoes, fries, glazed banana and bread. I didn't try any of it. I did have dessert. The chocolate mousse cake was very good. My friend really enjoyed the crème brûlée, someone tried the carrot cake and said it was ok. I would go back. But make sure you like meat and have a pretty empty stomach. It's expensive but yummy!

Nope, no meat
Bobbi H.

So, at a Brazilian steakhouse, they continuously bring you different kinds of meat that you pair with an expansive salad bar. Each person has a red and green coaster to signal the servers to bring you more meat ( green side) or pass by (red side) This is a chain, take that into consideration. We don't usually pick chains though we got a gift certificate/coupon for making a donation to the red cross last month so decided to check them out Servers were attentive. Salad bar was fresh. Meats were just OK. Some were fatty, and others were dry. I felt the variety of types of meats to be lacking as well, focused on red meat. Only 1 chicken and one pork. The Brazilian cheese bread was disappointing, almost flavorless. We did the main dinner and salad bar My rating rationale +1 Service + Food~Taste/flavor/quality + 1 Presentation +1 Atmosphere/vibe +1 Value

Attended a work function for dinner. They couldn't seat the party together even with a reservation, which was unfortunate. Attentive service. Wasn't too impressed with the salad bar. But all the meat I selected was cooked and seasoned to perfection. Desserts were rich and decadent. Our Wine selection was fantastic.

Olga G.

Other than waiting for a table for 35 min with a reservation, everything was really good. Granted, it was a holiday, but I guess we misunderstood the purpose of the reservation... The service was very good, delicious food and the house wine. I'd stick with the way they suggest for the meat to be done, some of it was overcooked if it was medium well. One of the highlights was the lobster bisque, just absolutely amazing!

Liyang S.

Decent food, good service, and a luxurous atmosphere make this a nice place for a special meal. Too bad the meats were mostly cooked medium well to well done, which is a huge no-no in my opinion for steak, especially when we told the staff that we wanted our meat medium rare. The picanha, for instance, was overcooked and unpleasantly dry and chewy, and the chicken was so dry that I opted to skip them altogether. The salad bar was decent and fresh, but didn't offer as much variety as I would have liked. It would have been fine if prices were lunch prices, but we came new years eve for lunch and they only had dinner prices, which makes the meal not worth the price (almost $60 per person).

There's not much to say here. Brazilian steakhouses don't miss. The service is amazing here, I will say. For some reason, everything was amazing, as expected. The waiters were amazing and tentative and made sure our glasses stayed filled. Definitely come here if you want to take a date or you're super hungry!

Marci F.

I thought I had mixed feelings about the restaurant. Let's start with the good. The soup and the salad bar was very good and had interesting things on it. The service was also really really good and I liked how much they explained how the operation would work we went for lunch to celebrate my partner's birthday. There was plenty of meat but the disappointment was the food was supposed to be medium rare and I found a lot of it a little overcooked. I also thought the sides at lunch were only OK. The garlic mashed potatoes did not have enough garlic. the bananas were incredible. I just felt the meet was very hit and miss and a lot of it was too over cooked for me. We still had a good time.

What is the dress code?

I recommend pants with an elastic waistband.

Are there any high top tables that can be reserved?

No, Texas de Brazil maybe considered fine dining and they do no have high top tables. No televisions. You can make reservations though.

How much per person? Is this a buffet style like fogo de chao?

If you just get salar bar option it's $45 a person, if you want meat and salad bar, it's 60a person. I'm not familiar Fogo de Cho.

I've lived in Richmond for almost three years and had never been to Bookbinders, so I was excited to try it. We had a 6:30pm reservation and the lot across the street was pretty full by the time I arrived, but thankfully was able to get a spot. We started off with the seared Cajun tuna and crabcakes appetizers. The tuna was delicious and melted in your mouth. The crabcakes were tiny and just ok, so I wouldn't go out of my way to order those again. I ordered the Japanese Hokkaido Pan Seared Scallops, which came with asparagus risotto. This was by far the tastiest scallops I have ever had, and growing up in New England, I've had my fair share of scallops. They were so flavorful and melted in your mouth. We ordered a side of the Lobster Mac and Cheese, which was so cheesy and chock full of lobster. So good! For desert (which I got to go because I was so full), I got a piece of their key lime pie, which came with an oreo cookie crust, and was really tart and tasty. The manager stopped by our table several times to check on us and our waitress was also really attentive. This is definitely a place for special occasions and I'd recommend skipping a few meals as their portions are nicely sized. I can see why this restaurant has been around so long.

The service was a little too leisurely for my temperament, and the tab did arrive at the table on one piece of paper when we had clearly requested that there be a separate tab for each couple, but those would be my only complaints. We all had cocktails, one from their specialty list and three that were standard issue. All were delicious and had an appropriate alcohol content for cocktails. The restaurant week menu provided a good variety of choices. Everything we had was really delicious. Portions were generous, so I could not eat more than about half of each course and not get overly full, but I assume they are sized for all but the hungriest diner. The venue's sound level was pretty high. I could have left my hearing aids at home so I wouldn't hear as much of the background noise. Noisy restaurants are pretty standard, I guess. We will definitely be returning to Alewife. It will probably take the place of Grisette in the rotation, which has been dropped because of institution of a fee for reservations canceled less than 24 hours in advance. (I don't think it should be treated as a privilege to dine somewhere when you have so many equivalent choices, but I guess they want to decrease the number of people who try to make them their dining choice. Objective accomplished.) The Hemingway quote at the bottom of the tab was a little weird. Not a Hemingway fan, but I guess it was an interesting thing to do. The thing we knew we needed to have to eat was the Siren's Song special which was a lazy Susan full of different dishes. The Siren's Song consisted of oysters, fried clam strips, smoked fish dip, seared tuna, pineapple fried rice, and a fried fish collar (sorry don't remember the fish, maybe Skate) with a Szechuan dry rub on it. This seriously was an amazing display. Every single dish just took it up a notch. They were also super nice to accommodate making it pescatarian because the Siren's Song usually has meat elements. The fried collar really blew me away. So meaty, fried perfectly, and the dry rub was so flavorful but not too salty or hot. Despite finishing the whole Siren's Song, we also got the Cascatelli without guanciale which was also delicious. We finished off with their caramel custard which wasn't too sweet and had a great mix of textures and flavors. Also tried one of their NA drinks and a glass of their special chilled Grenache Noir which was surprisingly good (not a big red wine fan). Overall, we absolutely loved it here. While the main dishes are a bit limited, most of the sides are gluten-free. Now for the food, the crispy chicken sandwich was the highlight of the meal. The Smashburger was also delicious. I ordered the rockfish without the bun, while my dad had it with the bun, and both were great. The beet salad was fresh and flavorful, and the fries were solid. The mac & cheese, unfortunately, was not good at all. On the plus side, the hot cider was delicious. Desserts were a bit of a mixed thoughts. The bread pudding was definitely the best one we tried and really enjoyable. However, the chocolate peanut butter pie was a big disappointment. It was extremely hard and cold (not pie texture), the peanut butter wasn't creamy at all, and it honestly tasted more like a protein bar loaded with sugar. The crust also tasted like it had been sitting in the fridge for a while--disappointing. Overall, we still enjoyed our visit and many of the dishes were great, but the dessert experience could definitely be improved.
