It's been a few years that I have been to Heritage... I've always liked it but we just never think to go for some reason. I took my daughter to go see Mamma Mia and I was able to get reservations for dinner. We got early reservations for 5:30, there were only a couple of tables with patrons but by the time we left if filled up. It's such a chic spot, I wonder why we don't come here more often. My daughter also enjoyed the ambience. We started off with Pimento Croquettes which were super light and I loved the pimento cheese spread it came with. My daughter actually ordered the creste di gallo pasta which was delicious. The waitress did warn us of the spice (my daughter doesn't love things too spicy, so they recommended the burrata with it)... it ended up being too spicy for her lol so I swapped with her. She ended up eating my Roasted Pork Loin with curried spaetzle which she loved and I did too (no worry we had leftovers of both which I will probably end up eating lol ). My only complaint was that both dishes were a bit lukewarm... I thought both were flavorful but I would've loved if they were hotter. I have a thing with piping hot food. We ventured downtown for our first visit to Heritage and were not disappointed. Parking is always challenging in the city but we managed to find a spot on main st not too far away. The restaurant has a cozy modern vibe with warm lighting. Service was friendly and relaxed but also impeccable. It was a Tuesday so we weren't going to get cocktails but "snuggled up in the alps" sounded too good to miss so we shared it and loved it. Very smooth. At first glance Heritage looks like eclectic American, but with a closer look, there are definitely many Asian influences. For apps we got the fried broccoli, butternut squash soup and soft boiled eggs. The Butternut squash soup was a nice change from the standard butternut soup that's usually on the sweeter side. This one had a coconut curry base that added a nice little kick and some great garnishments with pumpkin seeds, sunflower seeds, and sourdough toast. Delicious.. The fried broccoli was decent, but honestly, I make a better roasted version, at home. The soft boiled eggs was an interesting appetizer with some tasty ingredients like chili crunch, scallion, and sesame but didn't care for the bluefin tomato sauce, which left an unpleasant fishy taste. For entrées, everyone enjoyed the local rockfish which was done perfectly and had a grain based risotto (farro) along with some delicious brussels sprouts, bacon and butternut squash. The black garlic Garganelli pasta was also very flavorful with rock shrimp, broccolini mushrooms in a Meyer lemon scampi sauce with Parmesan on top. I'm a sucker for Burrata which you can add for a hefty $7 extra but thankfully, my husband refrained and we found it really did not need it. The only entrée, that was a bit of a disappointment was the pork tonkatsu with Brussels, kimchi, fried rice and duck confit you'd think it would be a hit, but it just felt very bland. Needed something bright or acidic to complement the flavors IMO but I am not a professional chef lol The pricing felt a tad high especially with the high service taxes in the city, but we will probably still come back for another bite for a special occasion. So the service was impeccable. They were awesome and wonderful. There was a slight mix up with one of our dishes and they were quick to remedy it and took it off the check without us saying a word. Everything we had was wonderful from cocktails to wine to appetizers to main course. The steak was poorly made. A great friend and chef told me, if you want to send a message to the chef, send the food back and do not ask for anything else in return. Pay for the meal and tip your wait staff. The chef will understand. Never return your food and ask for it to be made again. I was far too hungry to do that. The steak was dry, lean, and was not medium rare. This is the first time in at least a decade that I ordered a steak at a restaurant. I usually cook them myself because I've been disappointed too many times. I thought this time $48 would be the price that would land me a decent steak. I gave my wife a bite to watch her expression. She was disappointed and she didn't even order it. Nor was she paying for it. I'm fairly certain the menu said "ribeye", but I either got a dollar store ribeye or a food Lion flat iron. I see their old menu lists the steak as flat iron. But that's not what was on my menu. I'm not mad at this restaurant. I don't think it actually deserves 3 stars. My sister and I dined at Heritage for the first time prior to the Samara Joy show at the Altria Theater. This was the perfect location for a pre.show dinner as the restaurant is conveniently located a few blocks up the street from the theater. Upon entering the restaurant, we were made to feel welcome by the hostess. We were escorted to our table & immediately approached by our server. She was courteous, welcoming & very knowledgeable about possible menu options. I ordered the fried green tomatoes as my appetizer & the Duck Breast as my entree. The food was fabulous. Each dish was cooked perfectly & the flavors meshed together well. So far Heritage's rendition of Duck Breast is my favorite in the area. For dessert, my sister & I shared the Pistachio Ice Sandwich. Absolutely wonderful! Every dish was simply spectacular. Perfectly cooked, exquisitely flavored, beautifully presented and I could go on and on. The atmosphere is a contemporary "shot gun" space which is tastefully decorated with high quality furnishings and a gallery style display of rotating local artists / painters works for sale. The owners, Emilia and Joe, are not new to the restaurant business, and have experience operating a number of different venues. Emilia's training with the C.I.A. We started by sharing a snack of Fried Broccoli with an aioli dip. The florets had a unique texture that my mouth experienced for the first time, and leaves me without words to describe it. For an entree, I had the Petite Filet served along side of a wonderful unusual mix of vegetables and mushrooms (see the menu for a complete description). Everything was prepared and presented beautifully. The wife had the Garganelli Carbonara. The dish includes a house made pasta of a shape we've never seen, cooked perfectly al dente. To top off our evening, we each ordered a dessert, which was very unusual for us. I had the house-made Ice Cream Sandwich, which was just as incredible and unique as their dessert menu describes. The wife had the Candied Orange Cannolis (three), also house-made, and filled immediately prior to serving assuring a crisp, not soggy, shell. Both desserts were incredible! I'm told by the staff at Heritage that all menu items are offered for a limited time, so hurry and get here soon if you want to try the Ice Cream Sandwich. I was disappointed in our experience. For the prices, the food was subpar and the ambiance was very bland. I almost felt like I was at a generic hotel restaurant. My husband ordered the ribeye, which I'm not sure was even a ribeye. It was truly just "ok" - no notable seasoning or flavor. He also had a cocktail that he said was pure liquor; not well mixed. I had the duck, which the waitress recommended. The meat was tough, hard to cut and hard to eat. The meal was also served lukewarm. We had a salad and the pimento appetizer, which was the best flavor item we tried. The salad was extremely overdressed. We were also told there were no specials, which I was surprised to hear. Heritage is a Richmond restaurant institution considered by many to be among the very best in town and my wife and I finally dined there this evening with friends. The deets: we found the service to be excellent, the space to be quite tight and a little dark, and the food to be good. For some clarity, the appetizers were excellent, but most of our group of 4 found the entrees to be good, but expected great from all we've heard. Vegetarian options are very limited, too. Now, we still absolutely recommend this restaurant and I rate the restaurant on this night to be 4 stars, but from all I saw, it's a 5 star place on any average night. Today, Masjede Azizi and Ian Ward did a wonderful job on flushing my tankless hot water heater (a practice they do for me every Spring) and replacing the internals of a guest bathroom. Both had become clogged, as sediment is working its way through the Richmond water system and just reaching people's houses. A few weeks ago RICHMOND, VA had a week-long "boil water" emergency where our water was turned off. Upon restarting the water, sediment has been making its way into folks' houses. We decided to try heritage for the first time this evening and it was spot on at every point! We were welcomed as we came in for a 5 o'clock reservation and sat immediately. Our server was very nice and went over the specials for the evening right away, which I always enjoy. The mood was very laid back, but you could definitely dress up and have a date night, or grab a seat at the bar. They offer a few mocktails that were creative and different from the norm. We started with two appetizers and each had an entree. The food was great and coursed out perfectly. The pork fries on the snack portion of the menu were not what we expected, but we really enjoyed them and would have them again. From their three course offerings I got: - Tuna Tartare: not sure what those crackers were but every tartare should use them. Pumpernickel-esque and not too dry but with a perfect snap, they paired nicely with the tartare, which had a tangy sweetness to it from the seaweed and green onions. - Soft Shell Crab: huge portion size! I was pleasantly surprised at how large these soft shell crab were. They were fried and seasoned well and sat on top of a creamy, pickley potato salad. - Cheesecake Tart: what a fascinating take on a cheesecake. I'm so glad Heritage is open again! They were closed for awhile during Covid. I went on a Friday night for dinner. They are currently doing a 3 course Pre-fix dinner. They had lots of great options to choose from! I started with the tuna tartar that was bomb.com! For my main I got the local fluke, which was a light airy fish that came with ramps, potatoes and oyster mushrooms. For dessert I got the chocolate hazelnut tart. Everything was delicious!! Heritage made one of the best meals I've had in Richmond. I started with the fried oysters which came with an assortment of pickled vegetables. The combination of flavors was on point and helped to cut through any greasiness. For my entree, I ordered the pappardelle pasta with meat sauce. It was phenomenal. Potentially one of the best plates of pasta I've eaten. The pasta was cooked perfectly al dente and the sauce was so flavorful. I was full after eating half but ended up eating the whole thing because it tasted so good! Had a reservation for 5 for a friend's birthday & we all had a wonderful time! Was so excited to finally get to try out Heritage and loved the warm, intimate space. Our server was incredibly attentive and every course was delicious. The Five-string serenade was a sweet & easy to sip vodka drink that was a perfect start to the meal. We decided on the cheese and charcuterie as an appetizer, along with a salad for the table to share. It was a great spread with lots of awesome add-ons like mustards and onion jam. Probably the biggest downfall for me was just how limited the menu was, but I understand that this is the chef's prerogative! I knew I couldn't go wrong with pasta and my bolognese with fresh pappardelle was delicious. My friend let me try a bite of the kale gemelli and that was yummy, too! Thrilled to say I have a new favorite restaurant in Richmond. Heritage has been at the top of my bucket list for quite some time and I just made it there last night but the food is so good I'd go back tomorrow. It's a smaller venue so recommend using your Yelp app to make a reservation particularly on a weekend. We went on a Tuesday and it was filled to the brim. Service was wonderful as well with our waitress being so knowledgeable about both the food and drink lists. Now onto the food - everything was beautiful. The plating makes the food just as fun as it is delicious. We started out with the pimento croquettes, I mean where can you go wrong with fried pimento cheese (you can't) but man they were good. My dad said he wanted a whole entree of them. And the sauce that comes with... soooo good. For our entrees we got the roast half chicken, bolognese, and hanger steak. I honestly can't pick a favorite. The chicken was so juicy, the grits cheesy, the kale crunchy, the broth rich with layering. The bolognese was insane and I require you add the burrata that they make in house because it made the pasta that much better. The hanger steak could maybe have used a little salt (only complaint all night) but was cooked beautifully and the accompaniments were perfect. Shockingly, despite mass quantities of food none of us felt heavy or like we had overeaten. We finished off with the candy bar dessert (add Nutella ice cream) and it followed suit with the rest of the meal and was so good I went to bed dreaming about it. This place was so cool. Small place in downtown with good street parking. Cute bar inside with lots of fun art. The restaurant works with a 3 course meal for $60. Starter, main, and dessert. There's about 3 to 4 choices for each. I got the crab and avocado salad first, the duck for my main, and blueberry tart for my dessert along with some cocktails. Cocktails were beautiful. Salad was amazing and good portion. Duck was amazing and the sauces and sides were so good. The dessert was the perfect ending and I was stuffed. All the presentation was beautiful. I loved their beer list -- it's well-rounded and curated nicely. I chose the Bullfrog grapefruit IPA solely because I was amazed to see Bullfrog (a tiny operation out of rural Williamsport, Pa.) on a Richmond draft list. As for food, I wanted to order the entire menu. I understand they rotate their options, so that makes a return trip even more necessary! After loads of teetering, I chose the roasted chicken with greens and cheesy grits. Our server assured me it ranked among the top chicken dishes in the whole city and was an excellent choice, but I gotta say I had some food envy while looking at some other dishes on the table -- especially the garlic pasta. My chicken was cooked perfectly, but at the end of the day it wasn't magical...it was just a classic, nicely executed and plated chicken dish. I did surprisingly enjoy the grits. Pretty sure that was a first. For me, the standouts would actually be the app and dessert plates. Both were incredible! I treated my boyfriend to dinner here, we ordered the fried oysters, the crab salad, and an AMAZINGLY DELICIOUS charcuterie board.... that my mouth is watering for as I type this. Sooooo I'll BRB . . . . Ok, the oysters were perfectly breaded and fried, taste was so simply but so deep rooted. Lawd they were good. Crab salad was SUPER fresh, but in my opinion lacked flavor as far as my idea of what it should have been. Charcuterie board is the MAIN reason we came here. I was craving one & this definitely met my standards. I would have liked more cheese but honestly it was good and I have no REAL complaints. We finished our meal off with the "cheesecake". It was Deconstructed and Adorned with figs, pistachio, and ginger. This was equally awesome! Probably my favorite restaurant in town - honestly bomb AF. Usually have the chicken entree and the pimento croquettes, both of which are so bomb. The chicken is so moist. The cocktails are amazing. Yesterday I went back for more, had the fried broccoli and the chicken liver pâté for starters and got a Mezcal old fashioned type cocktail. The broccoli was lightly seasoned and came with a dipping sauce that was delectable. The pâté was unbelievably creamy. I washed all that down with the mezcal cocktail was so smoky, and got the flounder for my entree. The fish wasn't bad, but sadly not the highlight of my meal. Our dinner at Heritage started strong and then went downhill. Our appetizers - a beet salad and a tuna/hamachi crudo - were excellent, among the best things we've eaten in a long time. Then came the big lull. It was probably 40 minutes before our next course hit the table. The mains - duck breast and ribeye - were very good, although not as hot as they should have been. Dessert was definitely the weakest course. We both had the chocolate candy bar, which was good but didn't wow us. Service was okay, not particularly attentive. We'll give Heritage another try because the appetizers and mains were amazing. A 40-minute wait between courses at a high-end restaurant is unacceptable. read more
