If you're looking for a quality oyster bar in Queen Anne, this is the place to be. It's shiny, has good service, and all the Taylor Shellfish oysters you know and love. The menu is no-nonsense, the kitchen is open, and they have a full bar to meet all your party's needs. It's even a quick skip over to all the attractions in Seattle Center, so you can easily make it the dinner portion of dinner and a show. The downside is it's missing all the no-frills charm of their Melrose retail location. I know there's a big difference between retail and restaurant, but the beauty of the retail shop is it's quality oysters, in an unassuming joint, at a fantastic price. There's just something about that the-guy-shucking-your-oysters-may-have-been-on-the-farm-yesterday-harvesting-what-he's-shucking-for-you-today feel the Melrose place offers that the wife and I love. I'm not gonna lie, we also prefer to pay the wee bit less than $2.50-$3.00 per you'll pay at the Oyster Bar location. Seattle is home to quite a few oysters spots; many peddle Taylor's wares. For my money, I'm hitting up the retail location for a good deal or sitting down at a spot like Walrus & Carpenter for a quality meal. Their lunch specials were better priced. The oyster po-boy was better than any I've had in New Orleans. With that said, my oyster bisque came out tepid and the side salad it came with was too sweet for my taste. They were going to get 3 stars until I saw that they had charged an extra dollar for horseradish and an extra dollar for tartar sauce. My parents, who are extremely picky about seafood, said it was their favorite meal too! Staff was super friendly; our waitress recommended the geoduck sashimi to us which was really good! And of course, you must get oysters when you're here - raw or fried, they're both good! We also had an order of steamed clams and mussels, which really took us by surprise because we don't typically like mussels, but it was the best, most tender steamed mussels we've ever tasted! Stopped in for an early dinner on a Sunday and didn't have to wait at all. It has a pretty casual vibe, so they asked us to find a seat ourselves. We ordered a couple of glasses of wine ($12-15), the smoked oyster dip and chips (really good and not too smokey! $8) and seafood chowders (also great, but small for $10 a bowl). All of the food was pretty good, but our choices were probably not quite worth the price point they were charging. Additionally, it kind of felt like we were being rushed because we didn't order a ton of food and they came back to ask us if we wanted to order any additional food multiple time. Great service, ultra fresh food, ending a beautiful Sunday in a fine setting next to the Space Needle. Fresh seafood is going to be expensive, and as I've said repeatedly, you really can't afford cheap seafood. And yes, there is a mandatory tip added, but I normally tip 18 to 20% anyway, so this had no effect upon me except for saving me a math test at the end. Totally enjoyable.... We were seated quickly and our orders were taken right away. The service was pretty great, it seemed like the waiter was really passionate about what he did. I got the whiskey flight, which came with three shots whiskey paired with 2 oysters each. When I got the order the I got specific instructions on how to eat the oysters with the whiskey and which oysters paired with different whiskeys. He even demonstrated by taking a shot with me. Very poor experience overall. While the food was just ok, the service was awful. Our server never filled our water and she made it seem like a chore to get us a glass of ice. My grilled cheese was burnt on one side (which they offered to remake) but no one ever came by to ask how things were, and our empty starter dishes sat on the table until we left. There was no eye contact and we felt like we were unwanted guests. Lastly, I've never been to a restaurant that charges 18.9% gratuity charge just for eating in the restaurant! The bill remarks that it's to cover commissions and benefits!?!? Maybe a different business plan is in order. $60 for 2 pieces of cold bread, a bowl of bland olives, and 2 small seafood dishes. Let's just begin by saying that the food is VERY good, but the service is bizarre! We started our meal with the Geoduck Sashimi. If you are from out of state, I highly recommend this- considering I've never seen it anywhere else. You get a good portion of both belly and siphon; Both having different flavors but each bringing their own individual punch. Next, we had the Dynamite Clams & the House Broiled Oysters- great flavors & great to share amongst two people. The Northwest Chowder was the highlight of our meal (although it could've benefited from a few more clams). We ended with the Classic New England Steamer Clams w/ bread. If you want a thicker sauce rather than a broth, I would maybe choose a different option. The bread is a MUST to sop up the juice. I felt everything was reasonably priced for the quality & because of this we were able to try a variety of things. OK- the way this place runs is so odd. I want to preface this by saying that we did come when they were short staffed one server. The general manager was bussing, hosting, and taking tables, as well as expediting drinks (which seems to be a normal occurrence). Apart from that, only two servers were on floor, leaving what would be a crazy amount of work if the restaurant was actually full. At least 5 tables at a time remained unbussed or unseated while groups of people waited to be sat. According to our waitress, whom we rarely saw, on a normal night this place runs without a host or busser, which I can't even imagine considering the traction this place seems to get. She also said there hasn't been a turn over rate in 3 years which makes sense considering an 18.5% service charge is INCLUDED on all party sizes- I wouldn't leave either!! I took my father who is visiting from New Zealand to Taylor's for happy hour so we could have some fresh oysters. He could not have been happier with the experience, and also wanted to give a special shout out to Lacey, our server, who was patient with us as we tried to convert kilograms to pounds to figure out how much meat was in the Alaskan king crab legs! Taylor's oysters are truly some of the best I've encountered anywhere, but in addition to its several other branded locations, Taylor is also a major vendor for other restaurants around town, so it's not actually that hard to get Taylor shellfish products, and if you're really passionate about it, you should definitely make the trip up the coast to their actual farm. So granting the oysters are fabulous but not unique, what else is this restaurant bringing to the table? Literally, not much: oysters and a scant few other shellfish options are basically all they will bring to your table, so do not go here expecting a lot of choices or variety. I'm not the kind of person who considers a bunch of oysters to constitute "dinner," so I tend to regard Taylor as an extremely expensive snack restaurant, and since dining at two separate restaurants for appetizers and then dinner seems like a hassle to me, I don't come as often as I might if they served entrees. It's a nice occasional treat, though. The staff is very knowledgeable about oysters, and very casual, friendly, and fun. You might get ribbed a bit if you consume your oyster wrong, but they'll clue you in. The decor is also great, lots of reclaimed wood and a clean upscale rugged look, I'd feel comfortable here in a t-shirt or a dinner jacket. read more

My husband and I are huge fans of Taylor Shellfish and have repeatedly frequented the Capitol Hill and Pioneer Square locations. We very much enjoyed our inaugural visit to the Queen Anne location, and bonus for having a parking garage next door that validates... this neighborhood is not known for easy free parking! Our servers were excellent - very friendly and prompt with all of our requests and orders. We just made it in time to place an order for happy hour. We usually get the Shucker's Dozen, which is much pricier but you get a nice medley of different regional oysters. If you are there for just fresh oysters, period, then go for the chef's choice happy hour where you get one type of oyster. But I do recommend ordering raw oysters either a la carte or the Shucker's Dozen to try all the yummy different varieties (the Totten Virginica is usually my fave). You do need to order fresh horseradish and/or cocktail sauce separately, otherwise you just get the mignonette, which is absolutely refreshing and delicious - seriously, I could drink that stuff. Unfortunately, during this visit, we did experience a couple of oysters with shell bits, which is not typical at all of Taylor Shellfish. We always order the Macrina baguette and butter... thanks to Taylor, we feel we need this accompaniment with our oyster feasts! We came here for the oysters and even though my fiancé and I strongly disagree on our favorites we both agreed that they were perfectly shucked and delicious! The horrible mussle cooks of the world ruining it for the masses!! We ordered the Pesto Mussel Steamers and it was love at first bite! The mussles were crazy tender, fresh and the sauce was FREAKIN AMAZING, not overpowering but rich and packed with flavor in their light cream sauce! We ordered a side of bread and used it to soak up every last drop of that sauce (Ok, maybe they brought us two loafs of bread) but the sauce was soooo good we didnt want to leave anything in in the bowl! So yeah, there were some serious carbs involved but I'm certain had the bread not been available there would have been at the very least... a few awkward moments of bowl licking. *shrugs* Just do yourself a favor and don't leave with out trying these things.
