I like this place. It's a short walk from the station and has some great outdoor seating options. The olive oil + bread they bring out before the meal is good. Wish the bread was warmer, and a little softer though. Menu is extensive! A lot of great small dishes to choose from and definitely a great option for large groups if they're looking to share plates. Croquetas (fried fritters stuffed with meat, cheese or veggies) here are a must try, as well as the various cheese plate options. All the chicken options looked really good too. Consistently delicious and enjoyable. They advertise quickly delivered plates and knowledgeable service, and have definitely lived up to these expectations every time I've visited. Last night we came in with about 50 minutes to spare before a movie next door at the Charles, and we had no problem getting 4 plates and drinks in that time, despite the restaurant and bar being at least 3/4 full. The bartender was very attentive to detail and took time to recommend and tell me about a great wine. Highlights are always the lamb meatballs, sardines or boquerones, pulpo y patatas, cheeses and meats are great too- can't say I've ever had anything disappointing. Before seeing a movie at The Charles Theater, my girlfriend and I wanted to grab a quick bite to eat. There are a few great options right over there (Bottega, Pen & Quill) but we decided on Tapas Teatro. We weren't super hungry, so a few small bites would totally do the trick. Pro tip, Tapas Teatro lets you order drinks to bring into the theater. My first visit to Tapas Teatro was over the summer and I learned that they have a whole Gin & Tonic menu. Of the five different ones on the menu, we ordered the Alegria and the Tonic #1. The Alegria was a citrus forward drink with tons of refreshing grapefruit. The Tonic #1 was just a really clean, well executed gin & tonic with the addition of a twist of lemon and juniper berries. Taking our waitresses advice, we started the meal with Pisto Manchego which is Spanish ratatouille. In a thin red sauce were zucchini and squash topped with pine nuts. Every bite of this was delicious. The waitress also suggested the Hipogloso Chamuscado. This was a special for the evening and I'm so glad we took her advice. The halibut was pan seared (and so tender) over sauteed chickpeas and chorizo in a tomato caper sauce. This was totally my girlfriends favorite dish that we ordered. The chickpea chorizo combo was insanely good and we finished every bite. For our last savory course, we had the Bistec a la Brasa. The steak was expertly cooked with a beautiful external sear. It was juicy and some of the best cooked steak I've had in recent memory. For dessert, we shared the Criollo which was a milk chocolate mousse wrapped in a chocolate shell. Overall decent experience because the food was good. The seating is very tight and you will get to know your neighbor well. The severs were a little aloft and ours kept forgetting to bring straws after we asked nicely repeatedly. She also forgot to put our food order in even though we ordered everything at he same time. We waited 20 mins for asparagus and told her to just cancel it bc we had already eaten the rest of the meal. She still bought the asparagus out right before we were leaving. Tapas Teatro used to be a great place to eat, but my last 2 visits will have me looking for another place to dine in that area. Our most recent visit was Saturday night. Frying fennel completely neutralizes the flavor, better to eat raw or caramelize. And the aioli for dipping adds nothing to the dish. The fried calamari was shriveled up and fishy tasting...seemed too old to be served. I decided to order a special to see if that is where the chef skills were more pronounced - no such luck. The seared duck breast salad was 4 thinly shaved slices about 2 inches long, served cold. The greens were saturated with so much dressing I could have picked it up and squeezed it out like a sponge. Four tapas and one dessert for two people came out to $42. Not bad at all! Here's the rundown: Manchego - Spanish version of mozzarella sticks! The manchego was battered and fried and delicious. It was delicious at first, but it got a little disgusting when it cooled. Eat it up! Asparagus with serrano ham - I was hoping for a little more ham, but it was still good. The sherry-butter sauce was pretty unique. Almost a little vinegar-y--in a good way, of course. Flat iron steak - YUM. Our server recommended this steak dish and another over the beef escalope. We chose the steak and we were glad we did! It came with caper-scented olive oil, and capers themselves made a showing, too! We had to fight our servers to let them keep our plate because we wanted to finish those capers! Rock shrimp - How do you spell butter? Answer: R-O-C-K S-H-R-I-M-P. If you're a butter or garlic lover, you will love this dish. It's really nothing fancy, but you can never ever go wrong with butter garlic shrimp at a tapas restaurant. Raspberry chocolate cheesecake cake - The name is a little redundant, but the cheesecake cake itself was delicious. I loved the thin layer of raspberry sauce on top of the cake, complete with that unmistakeable texture of raspberry seeds. The cake was just sweet enough, just rich enough and just big enough. This is a great date place - even at 4:00 on a Sunday, the restaurant was filled with light coming from the ceiling-high windows and buzz coming from the other very happy diners. Even though it took me two hours to get here from Silver Spring (stupid St. Patrick's Day parade!!), it was great. Wow. I don't even know where to start. First of all when on a date I don't really care where we go as long as its not mcdonalds, and the setting is dim and welcoming for good conversation. TT is definitely the joint for a good start to a good night. The restaurant itself its pretty small but full of character. Watch the table legs, they will get you as the date quickly noticed. Its dimly lit, and the kitchen is pretty open so you can see whatever it is people want to see when they look into a kitchen. (sweaty chefs, stacked dishes, food?) The menu is EXTENSIVE and from someone who loves asparagus this place really tickled my fancy. Arugula salad (which I typically live off of), tempura like asparagus, green beans and asparagus, I also tried the sauteed spinach which was awkward. It had a maple syrup finish to it which really caught me off guard. The cowboy steak was fantastic and a huge portion for the $9 price point. The date got an omelet and it was humungous, so big he didn't finish it. It looked wonderful, and had truffles (if i remember correctly.) They don't have st germain, but they do have the sister liquor (the ginger one) Domaine de Canton. I settled for vanilla vodka and coke, although I saw the sangria flowing like water at most tables. I wanted to try it, but I figured since I was going dancing I didnt want something that was going to give me the hankerin for a nap. The server was easy, nice, and accommodating to changing just about everything on the menu to my heart's desire. mmm tapas. Tapas are insanely fun. I love the concept of ordering a bunch of small plates and sharing them with the table. It's like being at a party, but more intimate. The open doors, tea lights, and dim lighting added to the ambiance. The dishes at Tapas Teatro are enjoyable. I like the calamari dishes. They know how to cook calamari. My main gripe with Tapas Teatro is how expensive it is. I'm willing to pay if it's worth it, but I feel like the portions are truly tiny (even for tapas) and not always that tasty. Whenever I come here with a friend we order about 6-8 tapas for a full meal. There were some favorites, like the calamari and molasses smoked salmon (an unusual and delicious flavor). The specials are also worth looking into. In terms of Spanish tapas, this might be the best Baltimore has to offer, but objectively in terms of tapas, the food is rather disappointing. I wouldn't recommend coming here unless you're REALLY craving tapas and not willing to travel. It's right next to the Charles Theater (meaning also near the JHMI shuttle stop), which is convenient, but if I'm hungry and in the area, I'd rather go to Minato or Sofi's Crepes instead. read more

Two foreigners with brave hearts and hungry stomachs, though discriminating palettes, were once trapped at nearby Penn Station without a ride coming for a few hours, and nary a clue of the neighborhood's nourishments. They wandered fortuitously to the outside seating of Tapas Teatro. The Filipino longed for rice, but was just as happy with his risotto and baby potato for starch. Of course he quite enjoyed the hearty omelet and delicate steamed mussels he fancied on the menu. The Swede just wanted Vodka. Just kidding, he wanted to eat, too, but was less picky with his grilled chicken with cumin and grilled lamb chops. They continued to, with both sophistication and bluntness, ravage the menu well into the night. The two became very fat. This is one of my favorite places to go for dinner with some friends. There has not been a single time that I have come here and tried anything bad. All the cheese tapas are especially good. Some of the highlights are the miticrema, mousse de salmon, and the egg with chorizo (I'm not sure of the official name). The waiters always make good recommendations so if you don't know what to order, just ask! This is the perfect dinner date spot. There is ample elbow room and there is a dark, romantic, candlelit ambience at night. I've been trying to have a meal here for over a year and I finally made it. We had a Ladie's night here on a Tuesday, which is perfect because they do $10 pitchers of sangria. I had no idea this restaurant was so small. It took a while for our party of 7 to get a table, but once we did, the food was delicious. Sangria-I tried both the white and red. I enjoyed the white more, which is not normal for me. Tio Pepe's is much better, but for $10 a pitcher (normally $17) it was worth it. I'm still not sure about all the hype about the sangria. Ensalada Del Teatro- Fresh and delicious. It was dressed perfectly. I could have eaten an endless plate of this and I'm not normally an arugula fan. Complimentary Bread-it was fresh, but nothing more than simple white bread. I don't know how they kept it from going stale. It was pretty hot in there. Croudite with Manchengo, bread and chorizo-It was a special of the night. Simple enough I could make it at home. Same bread as the bread basket, same cheese as the salad (just sliced) and same chorizo as the paella. Mejillones-Huge plate of muscles. Only a few weren't open and one or two seemed a bit underdone. The broth had great flavor. Paella-I was not expecting an enormous bowl! This is not a tapa! It is an entree and then some. It was a bit on the salty side for me, but every component was cooked perfectly. Warning: the shrimp are served with the head on. I still have a cut on my thumb from peeling them and it has been almost a week. I brought home the strawberry, white chocolate cake dessert. It was good, but not great. The strawberries were mushy and whole, which was a bit weird. The cake was dry, but the white chocolate was divine. Yes, I ate all of that food. I'm still recovering! The service was slow, but the food came out fast. They were busy from when I got there at 5:30 to when I left at 9:30. Everything was very good, but nothing was so great that I would go out of my way to come back. Their size and no reservations policy just makes it way too inconvenient. The price was fair and the space was lovely. With the extreme heat of that night, they need to improve their AC. It was a bit humid and stuffy. My single experience consisted of many 2-star moments and several 4-stars, but the ambiance is quite nice! The gentleman that was seating people did so very bizarrely, moving around customers, trying to seat my party of three in table for two, which would not have accommodated the fact that we were at a tapas restaurant with many dishes. After an unnecessary wait, we got started with their bottle of wine ($20 for their house special). I had something weird in my wine glass, and she took the glass away and refilled it for me. Their scallops and mussels were excellent, but their meat dish (can't remember the name, but it was a tiny piece half the size of your palm) was dry. Meeting an old friend you have not seen in 6 years can always be a little daunting. Will you still have anything in common? I mean come on, she is married with a kid and husband now. She is a physician, she's a homeowner, she's an adult. What part of the tequilla drinking rock star would be left? Luckily, five minutes into your high pitched chirping recap of your life, you realize that friends never stop being friends. Now all you have to worry about is what and how much food to order. The food at Tapas Teatro is not your typical Spanish food you would find in a tapas bar. The menu is full of small dishes of food with an American twist. More importantly, the menu is incredibly extensive with the addition of seasonal specials. Of special note, were the pea fritters. They are green pea croquettes with a gooey manchego center. Try to strategically plan the number of people who go. 3 is the perfect number because the many of the items come in threes. Also, because there is a long wait sometimes and they do not take reservations, it is best to keep your party small. Meat, poultry, seafood dishes, range about $9-$11per small plate. Vegetable dishes range from $6-$8. Assume you will need about 2 dishes per person. Keep a menu on the table so mid meal you can gauge if you will need to order more food. My friends like to end with a sweet item, but I stick to a cocktail, a perfect martini made with Hendricks, as my treat. (On the bottom of the menu they state you can get your cocktail "to go" what a great idea for the movies) By the end, you and your old friend will be new friends again as you loosen a few notches on your belts together to get a little breathing room. And then you both go home to pass out from your food coma, because you realized neither of you are a rock star any more and 11pm is way past your bed time. read more

I was going to give Tapas Teatro at least 2 stars just for the food and cocktails being decent, but after sending emails to them (and The Helmand) and not getting any response, I can't. This is the email that I sent them.... I want to start by expressing my major disappointment with your service on the night of May 31st. My girlfriend was treating me to dinner for my 40th birthday and suggested that we go to Tapas Teatro for dinner, since it had been highly recommended by friends of ours. While we were there we had the lack of pleasure of the following... - A waiter (when we could find him) telling us that everything that we ordered was his favorite and proceeding only bringing us one to two of our dishes (We sat not even 10 feet from the kitchen) All other remaining dishes were brought to us in a fairly rude and abrupt, as if we where a burden on them. - The one dish that was "tossed" on our table was the wrong dish. After politely telling the waitress that we didn't order the dish, took our dish off the other dinners table and put it on ours, walking away. - Last but not least, we were trying to order dessert (before 9:30), but everyone from the wait staff and our waiter (which we still couldn't find!!!) were too busy closing up and talking about what plans they had after work. thankfully Lost City Dinner was open. The only person that was very helpful during this whole night was the waitress for the table next to us (which we thanked on our bill). We wanted to love this restaurant so much, but will never come back and only can only give a very negative review for fellow friends and family. read more

I have been going to Tapas Teatro for years and it's never disappointed. It has always been on the top of my list both for romantic dates and for girlie get-togethers. The atmosphere is warm and intimate. The decor has been artfully-designed without being too pretentious. Seating is a bit tight but I don't mind getting to know new neighbors. It's especially nice in warmer weather when you can sit outside and take in the city sites and sounds. Dishes are always carefully prepared. My all-time fave is the creamy spinach and crabmeat, (I would like my last meal to be drowned in that sauce) but you can never go wrong with any of their specials. Recently, I had brussels sprouts sauteed in truffle oil and parmesan cheese that were deelish! Wines are moderately priced and the sangria is substantial. Some basics: They don't take reservations, so on Friday/Saturday nights expect to wait a bit. A bonus is that you can grab a drink at the bar and recline in seating at the adjoining Charles Theatre. Street parking is not too bad, but it's easy enough to just pull into the lot across the street and pay a meager $2 for the night. read more

Tapas Teatro is right across from the Club Charles. It's also next to the charles theatre, a theatre that not only drips with pretension but is actually probably made out of pretensions. The bricks are from a small italian village that olive garden would call, "rustica". The floor is french in origin, and it has an oh, I don't know, je ne sais quoi. The pop corn is probably called popped corn. I don't care. It doesn't creep into the tapas restaurant and that's all I care about. The lamb chops with a rhubarb sauce are fantastic in the same way that catching a girl's side boob as she reaches for something in a tank top is fantastic. There is that momentary frisson, where fiction meets reality, and then the moment is gone. The empty space of ecstasy is filled with the sound of rushing air, and you sigh, for the lamb chops are gone, having been inhaled, leaving a blank white plate with the carmine smear of heart's blood as the only evidence of their passing. Not to worry, my gentle traveler. Lo! The lamb chops are only around 10 bucks! How many can a man eat, before he becomes more than a man? How many bones remain, a thousand white fingers to the sky in supplication to God that you are now more than a man, you are rather a rhubarb scented mote in the night's eye? Seriously, they are that good. The bread is fantastic, the wine selection is great, and the cocktails are excellent, in particular the elderflower one is a refreshing hint of citrus and muted sugar that I would highly recommend. Also, one of the waiters is in UNKLE, and they played with Portishead, and that's some pretty hot indie rock trivia to get you into a pair of lacy boy shorts. Excited! Olives greated us when we were sat immediately at 730 on Saturday. Tapas Teatro is a really cool building, intimate thanks to the proximity and dim lighting. A good mixture of people, all chatting happily. At no point on our Saturday did the wait build beyond 2-3 tables. The small bar is full. Our waiter arrives and explains the wines well--we both get a red that fits our descriptions. He recommends 8-10 dishes to us, even admitting which dishes we should avoid. So far so good, informative service and to the point. We order. -- 4 minutes later-- Cold bread accompanied by oil and toasted garlic. Ok. -- 1 minute later, all at once, dropped on our table without note or explanation. Get a clue: one plate per person, no more.-- Goat cheese - nice onion jam, the goat cheese is lightly tangy and has manchego consistency. Seared tuna & quail egg - oily and bland. The peppers and oil were bright. The egg was slightly over done. The tuna was slightly overcooked, white strips with a thin red layer in the middle. Pleasant but a filler and generally flavorless. Chile rellanos - oily and bland. Another dish with the bright piqullo peppers. The earthy red chiles were nicely textured, the cheese rich. Robust but forgettable. We finished these plates, wiping the excess oil on our napkins and hoping for more salt in round two. --15 minutes after plates are taken and our bellies are growling. We haven't seen our server since ordering. I hate when delivery is poorly timed. Here it was too much of a wait and then all at once, again with no explanation-- Fried Fennel - bad. The garlic aoili was run of the mill. The breading fell off the fennel, leaving a slop on the plate. The fennel was still tough, earthy, and bland. We managed to choke down 1/3 of it. Sardines - Appropriatedly bone-in with heads on, excellent char while maintaining a slick delicate coating, the lemon helping cut the smoke, but this was my first experience with "bland" sardines. More seasoning desired Beef ribs with chimichurri - bland. Well cooked meat, medium rare even as thin as it was. Underseasoned however, bland like the sardines. The server asserted that the oily pico de gallo-esque salsa was "chimichurri" when we noted our confusion. I'm still not sure what we were served, but I prefer the grittier cilantro-based stuff with a texture that highlights a good steak's grain. The dismissal of our chimichurri question put us out since its the only time he talked to us after ordering. The blandness and oil has gotten to us. Even the intimate charm has worn thin--our table and plates continued getting bumped by patrons in transit. --20 minutes later and our server has passed our table 4+ times without stopping. We make eye contact-- "Is our morcilla ready" "Oh. You didn't get it?" "No." No apology, no explanation. Our last dish was simply forgotten and we were questioned about it. It came minutes later, dropped off with no explanation. Thankfully we waited as it's the only dish worth getting again. Morcilla - Good! delicate blood sausage, juicy yet retaining that addicting stickyness. The pine nuts crunch and the pesto smooths the softly earthy tones. The most flavorful, well-rounded, and best executed dish of the night. We have to flag the waiter down for our check. The only time he stopped to check on us was when we flagged him down for our forgotten plate. He was at least good about refilling water. No explanation provided, no offer to comp it. The restaurant wasn't packed so I don't get the confusion and lack of attention. The food was too oily and bland to merit going through that again. Disappointed read more

Perfect place for a dinner & movie, with the Charles right next door. And by date, I mean bring a close girl friend! My sister-in-law & I had a blast. We started with lots of yummy dishes to share. Our favorites were the spinach with sherry sauce& crab, chili relleno. & roasted eggplant. 5 dishes were plenty for the 2 of us. We also, enjoyed our cocktails immensely. My sister-in-law tried their specialty cocktails & kept it simple with a few vodka martinis. Needless to say, we were quite happy going into our Bradley Cooper movie :o) Lastly, and most importantly, was DESSERT!! I absolutely loved the sea salted caramel ice cream!! Can't explain why, however is it divine. And you get plenty. We also got the chocolate purse, i think the name says it all. Wait staff is fabulous and we thoroughly enjoyed our evening. A fairly respectable place with sufficient attraction, reviews/rating and popularity to be in little need of idolatrous yelping or fannish excitement. While I liked the place well enough for being a respectable manifestation of the genus of Tapas bars, it is precisely just that. A respectable manifestation of reasonable quality that is almost generic as any other bourgeois bar with appreciable but unmemorable plates. It may not have much going for it as far as idiosyncratic qualities are concerned, but if you're looking for something to provide a venerable place with local acknowledgment for whatever the occasion [friend-date, date, baltimore bourgie hang-out etc], then you can't go wrong with Tapas Teatro. To me it's symptomatic of what happens in small cities like Baltimore. At best much of the offerings [as far as consumption in general for the non-elite is concerned] set the ceiling at mere adequacy and then are applauded for meeting modest goals which provide goods, foods and services not at obscene prices, but charge a premium that marginally exceeds suitability. And since I've already demonstrated enough eccentricity and an example of misguided analytic penetration for at least five reviews... ...GO EAT/DRINK HERE IF YOU ALREADY HAVEN'T. read more

Totally solid tapas place, and great for pre-movie dining (there's even a special door to The Charles so you don't have to brave the mean sidewalks of Baltimore.) We came in on Sunday evening and the place was fairly packed, with a slightly older (middle-aged) crowd. We ate at the bar, and received attentive and quick service. We were immediately provided with a small bowl of bread and olives, etc. I forgot to try to the sangria, but the malbec I had was decent. While their wine list seems to offer good variety, their beer selection (all bottles) is pretty weak. There were lots of options for vegetarians. We tried two specials: an arugula pear salad with blue cheese, which was excellent, and a roasted beet dish with pistachio-infused whipped cream, because it sounded interesting. The beets were kind of uninteresting, it turned out. We also had the fried manchego (like a mozzarella stick - won't be ordering that again) and the potato and cheese croquettes (like fried mashed potato balls - pretty good but a little bland). For dessert, we had the server's recommendation, the goat cheese cheesecake. It was quite tasty. Overall, the food was decent; of what we tried, nothing was terrible, although nothing knocked our socks off. The ambiance was nice; it wasn't too loud or too lifeless either. The city's best red sangria resides here, although I wish it were residing in my mouth right now. The tapas are typically spot on- depending on your preference of flavour and so on. I've been here at least 5+ times and each time has been a treat. Don't expect a big meal, btw. It's tapas. They're small dishes and somewhat pricey. Either order a lot of dishes, pay the price, or prepare for a lighter meal. Either way, I'd say go for 3 or 4 tapas and you'll be ok. Nice ambiance for an intimate date night. The menu is unique but the food left much to be desired.

Recently ate here with a friend before going to Ottobar. To drink, I had the first Gin and Tonic (which was excellent, smooth and fresh) and a glass of red wine. We were very underwhelmed by the food (which I considered saying to the waiter but felt bad doing so). Miticrema: Too much goat cheese for my friend, but I can never get enough. Would be better if the size of the bread matched the fig (a one-bite size) or if they made a fig jam. Baby Squid: Fried squid was good, but the dipping sauce was awful. It was very bland, with little taste... kind of bitter, as well. Pork Skewer: My friend complained that his pork was too stringy but mine was fine. I just thought there was too much black pepper, and wasn't too impressed. I could have easily made this at home. Green beans: Can't ruin this. Only thing we ate up quickly and enjoyed. I doubt we will go back for dinner again, but I am sure we will stop in for drinks. I'm very surprised by the number of stars Tapas Teatro has received on Yelp. I don't really think it's deserved. read more

Roommates and I had a little early birthday celebration here last night. Things I liked: 1. The bread is very tasty..and they're nice about bringing you multiple servings to mop up the oil they provide as well as all the other tasty sauces. 2. We ordered 5 dishes + 3 desserts (one was free because of the birthday!) for 4 people and all left pretty full. 3. The grilled calamari was spicy and the marinade was great. 4. The med. veggie platter was also really good, with a really spicy but delicious sauce on top! Things I didn't like: 1. They don't take reservations. Very annoying! 2. We ordered a pitcher of sangria @ the bar while we were waiting and had to clear the bill before we got our table..which was a little irritating considering its the same restaurant and it was crazy crowded. 3. The sangria is watered down (but still pretty tasty). 4. Desserts were good..but not amazing. Key lime cheesecake was too mild tasting and the Royale had a weird crunchy layer underneath the mousse that made it hard to eat. read more

I really wanted to hate this place after the useless (I was dying to tell her, "You're as useless as a poopy flavored lollipop!") hostess seated us at what I found to be a crappy table after an unnecessary wait. There were tables outside; however, we weren't "money" enough for them, I guess? You know what, though? It turned out to be a pretty good table. And even better, we were lucky enough to be seated in Molly's section -- she rocked. Read Dane K's review for the menu... I knocked off a star because the white sangria was weak, too light and overly sweet and the hostess truly felt she was fabulous when, in fact, she sucked. read more

Went here after going to a premiere at the Charles theater (right next door) on a Tuesday night a few months ago with my mom. We ordered four tapas: The Roasted Baby Potatoes, the Empanada (was a special that night, got the last one!), Croquetes De Pollo (these were my fav), and one other I can't recall (I know it was something veggie). To drink I had a pomegranate martini and it was delicious- I highly recommend it. My mom had a glass of sangria, which she also said was very good. Oh and Tuesday night is also $10 sangria pitcher night. The atmosphere was nice and the service great. Our waiter was very friendly and took very good care of us and the food came out fast. I haven't been to many tapas places but this is on par with the ones I have been too, if not a little better. Definitely a nice place to go with co-workers, birthday, family, or for a date night. They do not take reservations! We were lucky and got a seat right when we went in (it was late) but I would recommend getting there early, especially if you go on the weekend. read more

This was my mother's day spot after seeing a movie at The Charles Street Theater (which is attached). My mom loved it and her Sangria. The ceviche was with scallops and rockfish and was great. My mom lived her salad with the serrano ham and the lamb chops. I appreciated the vegan asparagus soup. Plus we had a nice conversation with the table next to us. I definitely need to do dinner and a movie here more often. The food is a bit pricey. read more
