I know Tapas Teatro isn't new news but I think there's something to be said for a restaurant that's been around decades, has had almost the exact same menu the whole time, and still brings in a solid crowd most nights. We went back after a movie night recently and tried the chicken with the cumin aioli. It was incredible! Grilled to perfection with the perfect char while still being juicy. Then a few nights ago, we perfected our order by selecting the brussel sprouts (probably some of my favorite brussels EVER), the papas bravas, the shrimp, and the chicken. These four dishes have become our go-to and while I'm eager to try more from the extensive menu, I don't think I'll get tired of these. We also tried the paella which is the most expensive dish on the menu at $29 but it is also probably the largest serving size on the menu. It was pretty good but could've used more cracked pepper and/or saffron. I'd probably skip it next time. I'm still in love with their sangria and this time we got a pitcher and also tried the white sangria. I don't normally like white sangria but this one I enjoyed -- although the red still takes the cake for me. Service was friendly and fast, as always. The check was super reasonable for the amount of food, in my opinion. We will definitely be back! This spot is probably in my top 10 favorite places in Baltimore. I love the welcoming atmosphere and the consistency.
We really liked our dinner here. Located adjacent to the Charles Theater, it's in a great location. We were greeted immediately and led to a seat. The waitress gave great service with a smile. They serve great drinks as well as an array of small plates Spanish style. Our favorite dishes was the pollo a la braza, the bistec, the branzino (although it's a tiny amount), and the brussels. Note the brussels are roasted and in a light cream with bacon, as opposed to be deep fried and crispy. They have great desserts, dessert drinks, and even drip coffee. What we didn't love is that the two seater tables are placed extremely close together, and it makes having conversations difficult, especially because you may be competing with loud mouths. But overall, it was a great meal and we will return.
Headed here for a quick dinner after a movie night (conveniently literally attached to the Charles Street Theater). They had ample space on a Saturday night as we were walk ins. We weren't too hungry, so we ended up splitting a couple tapas and a dessert. We got the chicken and cheese croquettes, the Boquerones, and the calamari. Chicken and cheese croquettes definitely had a bit of a kick to it spice wise, but it was managable. The boquerones, which are anchovies marinated in some oil and seasonings, were yummy, but it only came with two little pieces of bread, thus one bread apiece for 2 people. Calamari was probably my favorite of the savories we ate, as the dipping sauce was not marinara exactly, or if it was, it tasted yummy. This honestly would have been a 3 stars, but the chocolate torte cake we shared elevated it to 4 stars. It really hit the spot. Our server was also very nice and friendly and made sure to check on us and make sure our drinks were handled. I'd recommend this for a nice date night or with a small group of friends for sure.
I felt like I was back in Spain eating tapas. Eating at Tapas Teatro was a great dining experience. The service was great. Our waiter and the other staff made some great recommendations. In my opinion Tapas Teatro is perfect for drinks with a group, date night, or pre/post show dinner. My partner and I ordered a variety of tapas. I'm a pescatarian who enjoys vegetarian dishes. I felt like there were so many quality menu options to choose from. We enjoyed everything. The Papas Bravas were perfectly cooked and the aioli was a fun switch up from the traditional brava sauce. The Trouta Ahumada, smoked trout dip, was probably my favorite dish of them all. It was a perfect balance of flavors. I wanted something a little sweet and the cheese dishes were calling my name. I ordered the Cana de Cabra. There was nothing left when I was done and that's all to be said about that...YUM! Note: My partner said the pork was salty and dry. We don't typically send things back, but she strongly disliked it. To be fair, this was not a recommended dish. Anyway, I highly recommend!
Second time here in the last several years. Met a friend who loves in the Baltimore suburbs here on a rainy Saturday night at 8pm. Found the very last spot in the garage across the street (that's open til 12am), which I was grateful for since street parking was simply nonexistent. Tapas Teatro does not take reservations, so we had hoped coming later in the evening might give us a chance to be seated right away, but no such luck. They're a smaller restaurant and all the tables were full, but the hostess directed us to the bar to wait. The bartender asked a patron to move down one so two adjacent seats were made available to us, which was very nice. The bartender was helpful in suggesting two gin-based cocktails for us. I had the Mediterrania - made with Mahon Mediterranean gin, orange, basil, and Angostura bitters. My friend has the BCN Tonic #1, which she really enjoyed as a Gin & Tonic officianado, made with BCN Barcelona gin and juniper berries. We ordered seconds during dinner, unwilling to switch since we enjoyed them so much. Within just a few minutes, our table was ready and we were able to transfer our tab to the table easily. We were brought some bread and olive oil for the table while we looked over the menu. We ordered the Gambas al Ajillo, shrimp sautéed in garlic and olive oil. We used our table bread to dip in the remaining oil after devouring the shrimp, and we enjoyed it so much we ordered a second to share. We ordered the Mejillones, sautéed mussels in a white wine garlic sauce (rather than a red sauce, also an option). It took up a lot of real estate on the small 2-top table, but it was very good. My only complaint was there was very little broth in the bowl. I like when the mussels are swimming in it a bit more, giving me something to dip my bread in as well. We ordered the Scallops, which were wrapped in a slice of Serrano ham in a saffron sauce. Also delicious. My friend has the Costillas de Cordero, the lamb chops. I don't care for lamb myself, but she remembered they were delicious from our last visit so she was inclined to order those again. Our last round of tapas included the Brussels Sprouts which were made with bacon, Manchego cheese, cream and truffle oil. Fantastic, highly recommend. And we had the potato and cheese Croquetas, also an excellent choice. Since we were celebrating a birthday, we ordered two coffees, a Torte Chocolate for my friend, and the Teatro Tarta de Quedo - a house made Goat Cheesecake with sherry reduction drizzle. Both were excellent, as were the coffees which helped keep me alert for the 90-minute ride back to Virginia at the end of the night. We left around 10:20pm and we were the very last to leave the restaurant! So there was no problem retrieving our car from the garage that closed by 12am.
Cool vibe. Warm, friendly, and great service all around. The stools weren't the most comfortable and it felt too far from the bar, but the energy made up for it. The lamb chops (only two!) were overcooked for what I asked, but still super tasty, tender, and the sauce was amazing. The tortilla española was a bit too firm, but had a nice balance of onions and potatoes. Loved the pickles! It could've used a sauce, luckily the lamb chop sauce worked perfectly. The flan looked great, but was way too firm and a bit grainy...flavor just meh. Overall, quick service, nice people, and good food with some misses. I'd come back for the vibe and to try a few other dishes.
What a unique dining experience my friends and I had at Tapas Teatro! Literally everything I tasted was a hit! But it wasn't just the food, the drinks were equally amazing. Most important, all of the dishes were very affordable allowing you to try several without breaking the bank. We arrived at the restaurant around 530pm on a Saturday. The venue was completely filled, so word to the wise, get their early or be prepared to wait. The restaurant is small and pretty dark. The seating is different, not what I expected, but comfortable. They definitely made the best use out of a tiny space. I started with the Rojito, a tasty rum based drink. For my meal, I had the Idiazábal which consisted of sheep's milk cheese with dry cured chorizo, whole grain mustard, caper berries and crostini. I also had the Salmón con Melaza which was a grilled salmon on top of ginger-jalapeño rice cake and Mejillones, mussels in a tomato basil sauce. Every dish was so tasty, but I think I enjoyed the salmon the most, the ginger jalapeño race cake was truly unmatched. I cannot wait to bring my husband here for date night. I am sure that he will love the cuisine. Many thanks to my friend for introducing me to this amazing restaurant!
I went for a quick dinner before catching Amtrak back north to CT. Arrived right at 5p and the waitress said I wouldn't have a problem catching my 5:40 train since the station is just down the street. Had two delicious tapas and a drink and made my train with time to spare. So delicious and so much better than train food.
We ate dinner at Tapas Teatro a few weeks ago after a movie. The service was good, and the restaurant is comfortable, casual, and nice. The food was just pretty good - some dishes better than others! We shared the empedrat de bonito del norte (white beans, fresh green beans, piquillo pepper, red onion, and capers, topped with Spanish conserved tuna); chili rellenos (piquillo peppers stuffed with aged Idiazabal cheese); berenjana asada (roasted eggplant, curried vegetables, minted yogurt); pulpo gallego (olive oil poached octopus, potato, olives, and heirloom cherry tomato); and marmitako (Basque stew of tuna, potato, roasted sofrito, and tomato). My favorites were the eggplant, piquillo peppers, and bean salad. The marmitako's tuna was really dry, which kept me from being able to enjoy that dish, although the stew itself had good flavor. And the octopus was almost tender - but not quite. Their wine list is pretty great - lots of interesting options. Overall, it was a pretty good meal, but I liked its chill vibes and service more than the food. I'd probably return, especially as its basically inside my favorite movie theater in the city!
I went here for a cocktail before seeing a show at Metro Gallery across the street. The interior was beautiful, though it was a bit chaotic. Seemed to be that you seat yourself and someone comes to serve you, which is unusual for a nice restaurant on a weekend night. However, the cocktail was delicious and reasonably priced, so they are definitely worth a visit.
I lived in Seville, Spain, for 3 months. The tappas here take me back!! I judge a Spanish tappas joint by their croquettes, tortilla Espanola, and gazpacho. They deliver everything to perfection both in flavor and preparation. I didn't get to try the gazpacho, but I will be coming back for sure! The tappas portions can serve 3 people.
Great paella and dessert! Seafood paella was large and shareable between two people and made us both full. Dessert of chocolate fudge cake was so good
I really liked this tapas place! First of all their fig old fashion was really yummy! It had a nice sweetness to it and was really good with the whole meal. I really loved the grilled octopus. It was grilled to perfection. It was perfectly tender and juicy inside and it was charred perfectly on the outside. My next favorite think was the potato and cheese with truffle oil croquettes. They were so good! I loved the gooey cheese on the inside and the potatoes too. It went well with the truffle oil too. I really like all the dishes we got! The Brussels sprouts were good too! They were soft and creamy which I really enjoyed. I would definitely go back to this place!

I ordered for delivery 3 weeks ago: 2 tortilla espanola, 1 pulpo gallego, 1 calamares fritos, 2 seafood paella. High hopes and some worries for the paella given previous bad experiences elsewhere and its cost. The positives: the calamares were good, the seafood in the paella very decent, the quantity of a single paella definitely sufficient for two people (but this was not clear from reading the menu, so I got two of it). The tortilla was average and small. The negatives: What to say about the pulpo gallego (octopus)? I'd have no idea. There simply was no octopus to eat. As you can see from the picture, a few olives, two cherry tomatoes, a bunch of potatoes and 2 (yes, two) small pieces of octopus for a total of 15$. This dish is not worth that and would I have been at the restaurant I would have sent it back. I ordered octopus, not veggies. The worries about the paella were also correct. While the seafood was ok, as said above, the rice was incredibly overcooked and all sticking together in a huge mess. I tried to contact the restaurant twice about the lack of octopus, but I received no response. While I think that mishaps can happen and there might have been some attenuating circumstances because it was a delivery, an answer and a refund for a dish basically missing the main ingredient should be the standard. All in all, a very sub-par experience for the amount spent. read more
I really like this little place. I've gone twice now, and it's been Enjoyable both times. I just so happened to have been there on a Tuesday where the pitchers of Sangria are only $10! As someone who love sangria, I want to go on record saying it's one of my fav sangria specials! The bartender was very approachable and knowledgeable. We were able to interact very easily and get all questions answered. We tried a number of tapas. My favorite was the (basic) Garlic Shrimp. Basic, yet DELICIOUS! The bbq lamp was pretty tasty as well. The spicy chicken calls were not my favorite though it paired well with the dipping sauce. The the space is a good size, it gives an intimate feel. Though probably not the best for large groups, good location for smaller groups and couples. I'll be back soon read more

Cool little tapas style restaurant serving Spanish plates. Very dimly lit so makes perfect for date night. The food was okay. We only liked half of what we got. The best one is definitely the octopus. Really love the potato and tomatoes accompanying it. Don't think I'd revisit tho. read more
Why do you not allow us to make reservations Tapas Teatro? I guess I am forced to share you with only a few friends at a time in a quaint intimate setting. That must be what makes it so special. Sitting at a little metal cafe table on the sidewalk reminds me of being in Paris. The air is warm but the afternoon sun is not too hot. I'm not looking at the Eiffel Tower, but instead at the back of a huge billboard sign with a million little birds lined up in sporadic rows. They are chirping and it's as if there is music playing over them but I realize that there is no music, it's just their beautiful sound. Tapas Teatro is worth the wait and you should go when they first open. Don't take a big group because it's a little place and you can always grab a drink at the bar while you're waiting on your table. I also discovered that there is a direct door to the Charles Theatre next door! You can take a drink "to go" to the movies (what!) or wait in their lobby with a cocktail when the restaurant is busy. Like any other place, you have to know what to order. Their menu can change but this is what they had on this particular evening. The great thing about tapas and the small sizes is that you can try several more dishes than normal. The waiter reminded us that only so much could fit on the table so we ordered a few at a time. - Pulpo Y Patatas: Baby octopus, soft potato, pimiento d' espelette (Tender and so good) - Chorizo sausage: (Can't remember exactly but slices came in a little black skillet in oil that you can dip your bread into...my top fav along with the baby octopus/potato dish) - Tortilla Espanola: Spain's version of a "frittata" (Deliciously simple, served cold) - Costillas De Res: Crosscut beef ribs with chimichurri (Cut like Korean kalbi, good with the chunky chimichurri) - Ensalada Del Teatro: Arugula, red onion, tomato, manchego, sherry vinegar reduction (Great idea but bad execution on this particular night. It was way too salty but I would give it a second chance) - Cardamom vanilla bean ice cream with mango, figs and dates: (Yes, all of that. Don't inhale when you take a bite because you might get too much cardamom power at once, but I absolutely loved it and didn't even need the fruit to be fabulous) Watch the passerbyers, enjoy good conversation, peer at what your neighbors have ordered, watch the birds fly to and from the billboard and relax at your cafe table by a big flower-pot with a cocktail in hand. I had a fabulous experience at Tapas Teatro. They don't take rez and the place is small (LOVE the cozy ambience!). We had a group of 5, showed up at 7pm on a weekday and had no trouble being seated. The drinks: The wine list is great and the house sangria (red) was FABULOUS. I lived in spain for a few months and haven't been able to stomach any of the so called "sangria" in the US til i found this one. We ordered a ton of tapas ---The FAVS! MUSSELS (a bit on the salty side but flavorful and ya want to keep the broth to dip the bread in!), CALAMARI (surprisingly light, crisp, and flavorful), the SCALLOPS (overpriced as you only get 2 scallops but DIVINE and seared perfectly. The cauliflower puree complemented it perfectly). LAMBCHOP (so flavorful and cooked well). GAMBAS AL AJILLO (how can u NOT love garlic+ shrimp?!) --The Meh : Lamb meatballs (a bit gamey), Squid (a bit on the salty side for me) How can I not mention the desserts?? They were all quite generous portions. --Cardamom sundae-first off, i'm not a huge cardamom fan. My friend ordered this and I tried a bite. WOW, who knew that mango + vanille ice cream+ a dash of cardamom could be so simple yet so tasty? Genius. --Hazelnut chocolate panna cotta with espresso-WOW not too rich but rich enough, amazingly light texture, tons of whole hazelnuts. The prices ranged per dish, and I think some prices were reasonable and some were a bit high for the size of the dish. Taking a jog around the city, I'm up the street from University of Baltimore and I stumble across the perfect outdoor spot to have some iced tea to cool off. Laid back and great service. I ate light. This little salad was perfect after a workout. Just enough to take the hungry edge off without packing calories post run. Some olives, a little bread, some people watching, fun convos and I'm ready to walk 3 miles home satisfied without being stuffed. Highly recommend. The menu is an interesting assortment of novelties and new things to try. It's fun. read more

Perfect carryout experience and the food was even better. It can be hard for restaurants to package food and still get the same experience at home but Tapas Teatro went above and beyond - no spills, sangria was cold, food was hot. We loved everything, especially the croquettes and the chili relleno. Highly recommend! read more

Oh yes, this place transports me back to time I spent in Barcelona. Lots of amazing dishes to try on the menu. I loved the croquetas and the fried fennel, but the paella is always a favorite. We also had a great little charcuterie dish with sheep's milk cheese and spicy chorizo. Even the bread was out of this world. On my latest visit, we sat at the bar. We arrived around 5:30 and there were plenty of seats, but the bar was full and hopping by 6. The bartender was super nice and gave great service, despite the crowd. Love this place and highly recommend! read more

I love you Tapas Teatro, but can you pleaseeee accept reservations? If you come on a weekend night, expect a wait. Not very conducive to trying to grab a bite and catch a movie next door. Otherwise, you can try your luck and find a seat at the bar. Last time I came we ordered the baby potatoes in sweet garlic aioli, grilled chicken in cumin aioli, fried calamari with marinara sauce, the mussels with white wine and leeks, and a beet salad. Everything was really good, but the mussels and calamari were definitely my favorite. And service was quick and friendly. My favorite thing about TT is you can ask for your alcoholic drinks to go and they'll give you a plastic cup so you can enjoy it next door at the Charles Theater. Also, if you have the app, Loupe (used to be City Dining Cards), you can save $10 off $40. read more

Yum! Five stars all the way around! Great staff, welcoming atmosphere, and delicious foods! I love tapas, it's a great way to eat, catch up, and spend quality time with family, friends, dates, etc. while sharing small plates of food! My absolute favorite thing about tapas is if you go with a large group you get to try so many different foods, even the ones you wouldn't normally order. This place is also great for a first date or a wedding anniversary, or just a celebration, the atmosphere is very laid back and comfortable, you almost don't want to leave. The drinks are always good too! They also have so many choices that it keeps you coming back to try them all! read more

The food is very tasteful and well cooked. Also, there's a variety of cheese spreads. I had the white Sangria and the fruits were fresh. They have outdoor seating if weather permits. Wish the positions were a bit bigger for the price. read more
Got dinner and drinks here last Sunday with 2 of my girlfriends and was it was waaay better than the couple times I have been here. Instead of waiting an hour we were immediately seated outside right under a heat lamp, this maybe have been because it was 8pm on a Sunday but whatever, I was happy. Service was much better and very attentive. We got a pitcher of sangria to drink and to eat we shared the pea fritters, mussels, sauteed spinach, bruschetta, pumpkin cake and chocolate royale. I love this restaurant!! Every time I'm in Baltimore I come here for the spicy chicken croquettes, the salmon, the goat cheese cheesecake and the sangria! Yum! When I first started coming here in 2007, the restaurant didn't remind me of Jose Andres' Jaleo in DC as much as it does now, but even having said that, Tapas Teatro is better than Jaleo hands down. Even the while-you-wait bread with the garlic butter and olive oil is delicious... and it had better be because you will definitely be waiting. You'll wait to be seated, anywhere from 0-60 minutes, and you'll wait to be served. You will be starving by the time the food comes, unless you come early or late or during the beginning of the week. Had to take off a star for that. It's a very cute place, none of the staff is pretentious (only had one experience with a condescending waiter in the six years I've been a patron, but he no longer worked there when I went back months later) and you'll have a great time. It's romantic but not inappropriate for a one on one with a friend either. read more

We had tapas before going to see some tap dancing, and it was soooo good. We had two items off the standing menu and two from the specials, along with a pitcher of sangria. I should have written down the names of the items we ordered, but I was very impressed with all of them. Two of the four dishes we ordered (spinach with crab and these duck things with cherries etc.) were so damn good that even though we didn't reeeeally have time to do so before leaving for the show, we ordered one more of each. The flavors and textures were all very well balanced. The sangria was pretty good, too. The atmosphere is warm an inviting, reminding me of Tucson somewhat. It made me think of the realization I had after first moving to Tucson that some of the feeling of heart there is similar to that of Baltimore, and I felt very at home. At home, and deliciously satisfied. ;) For two people, our bill was just under $80, a splurge for me but well worth it. There was a long wait for a table, so if you go on a weekend evening, plan for that. There is a bar area where you can have a cocktail and wait or you can do what we did and pop across the street and chill at Club Charles for a moment. read more
