Tanzie's is such a cute and inviting spot in Berkeley with a modern take on Thai flavors. The service here was incredible. We started with the khanom krok and they were so good -- hot, crispy on the outside and creamy inside. The Thai beignets tasted just like Chinese donuts and came with a side of sweetened condensed milk. For the main, I got the sai oua with chicken. I have been wanting to try this place for a while. I went on a Friday morning. It was pretty crowded, but I was able to sit at the counter window area. The place was really nice. The owner was my server. She was very friendly. I got the lava eggs with sausage and it was so tasty. Went here for a brunch with my best friend this past weekend. Although the wait time was very long the amazing food makes up for it. We ordered the coconut cakes which included; coconut, sweet potatoes, purple yam, corn, and green onion. My favorite one would have to be the purple yam. One of Berkeley's hidden gems for brunch. Popped in on a Saturday around noon and found a crowd hovering outside. The wait system was a bit chaotic for me as a first timer. You really can't trust hangry people with the honor system We waited about 30 minutes and finally got a table. We started with the coconut cakes along with the ube drink and hot soymilk. The coconut cakes were incredibly delicious. Every bite was a flavor bomb. Definitely best enjoyed hot out of the kitchen. For mains, we had the grilled pork bowl and the beef shank lava plates. Both were fantastic but the pork jowl was the star. Savory, tender, and perfect with the lava eggs. The beef shank leaned heavier on the lemongrass, still delicious, just not as balanced as the pork. After passing by Tanzie's for a while, my friends and I finally got the chance to eat here for lunch! We came on a Sunday afternoon and were seating outdoors in about 15 minutes. The place is extremely small inside, but they try to serve as many people as possible with all their tables very closed together. We had to call for a server who grabbed our order, and the wait time for food was roughly an hour. However, the menu does tell us to be patient with our food as they cook! The Thai Beignets were light and fluffy. Super airy and crispy! I asked what made the beignets thai, and our server said the addition of condensed milk as a dip. I also got the Sai Oua with Chicken, and I enjoyed my dish! The chicken was shaped in little patties and it was flavorful with lemongrass hints. My eggs were strong with the heavy cream though, but my friends said their eggs were light. Trying a bit of my friends, the pork jowl was nice and crispy. It had a good chew and char to it. The beef shank was also really tender and a little spicy! And the pork belly was very melty. This is a cute spot with leaf seat cushions and beautiful food that actually tastes as good as it looks. Tanzie served my group; I appreciate the double-check on allergens. For future reference: of the savory dishes, only the vegan egg has no nuts or shellfish. We ordered the nam prik kha lava egg, vegan lava egg, pork jowl, and gaeng hung le; I can't speak to the quality of the latter two, but I know that the peanuts in the gaeng hung le kept some of their original texture and that it was incredibly filling. The vegan eggs and butter are indistinguishable from the real thing and are really eggy eggs. The mushrooms there have good texture, and the vegan fish sauce is reminiscent of salsa and strong on the alliums in a good way. The nam prik kha comprises beef shank and a sauce of galangal, chilis, and garlic. The shank is even. I want to say the sauce also has lemongrass; the smell, as is the taste, is punchy, galangal-forward, beautiful. The sauce is fresh and balances the meat even without a vegetable serving on the plate. The spice level is appropriate, if a bit under. Heard about this new spot from a sibling who works nearby so had to try to after looking at the food photos from Yelp. Came on a whim on chilly Sunday at noon and waited for over an hour to be seated. It's a tiny establishment so there are only eight tables inside and a few outside with a couple of 2-top tables. Once seated inside, our server took our orders and went back to running around like a headless chicken. Despite being super busy, the khanom krok and Thai beignets came out quickly to give our blood sugar a little boost. Shortly after, our drinks arrived looking so beautiful. The Cara Cara OJ was freshly squeezed and deliciously smooth. The Thai Iced Tea was perfectly balanced with sweetness and creaminess. The foam top was nice touch which you rarely ever see, if ever. They recently came out with the dirty ube latte and we had both the dirty and non-dirty versions. The ube is flavored condensed milk, which gave it a really nice and strong purple yam taste. Both were delicious! Nam Tao Hu was pleasantly good. I could do without the ginkgo seeds though.
