I came on Friday around 1pm with a friend for lunch and it was completely full inside. Luckily we only waited 10 minutes to get seated. But my friend told me she has waited 30 minutes on the weekends. The place is small but they do have outdoor seating. We ordered the thai beignets, sai oua, and jasmine thai tea chia bowl to share. We also got the iced strawberry makrut matcha and iced jasmine thai tea (both with oat milk). All the food was so good! I recommend all 3 of these items. The beignets were crispy and airy and paired perfectly with the condensed milk. The meat, eggs, rice and sauce paired together made the perfect bite. Not gonna lie, I was hesitant about the chia pudding but it was so pretty we had to order and it tasted as good as it looked. I appreciate that they don't charge extra for milk alternatives. Tanzie's has been high on my brunch list. Companion and I had some time off so he decided to treat us to a meal here. We're glad we went but not sure if we'll go back anytime soon! Caffeine was needed since I've been working weird hours with minimal sleep, so I asked for an Iced Jasmine Thai Tea--pretty much a green Thai tea. Floral, light, and super sweet! They were able to make it with oat milk and take away the milk foam. Both my companion and I were curious about their Lava Eggs. I had the Sai Oua with Chicken and he had the Nam Prik Ong both with White Rice. The eggs were wonderful--buttery, light, and so fluffy! My Sai Oua was heavy on lemongrass, savory, herby, and spicy. I have such a low spice tolerance so the one chili pepper did me in! My companion's dish was good and tomatoey. I will say his was super spicy, it had two peppers but for me, one bite was enough. The food was good but spicy so being we both have a lower tolerance, I don't think we'll come back anytime soon oops. When the time comes, I am curious about their other items! If you like spicy food and want a more unique brunch, Tanzie's in Berkeley needs to be on your list! It's a super popular spot for all ages, especially those who enjoy Thai food and spicy food. A very unique culinary experience in Thai influenced brunch! I came with a party for 4 and the wait was pretty long but the quality of the food was totally worth it! We shared an order of the khanom krok, bite sized coconut cakes which were pretty good. A simple rice dish makes a comforting start to any day. *Khanom krok- This was my favorite snack when I visited thailand so to see it here in the States made me so excited to order it. The coconut pancakes were milky and rich with coconut cream. The middle was slightly runny and more liquidy which I enjoyed. Each topping was very unique and completely changed the flavor profile with each pancake. My favorite was actually the onion one and I'm not really an onion girly. I like the freshness and savory edge the onion gave in contrast to the coconut flavor. *Nam Prik Ong- The curry paste was thick with a strong tomato flavor shining through. The spices were strong as each bite packed some heat. The depth of flavors were great and multidimensional. I really enjoyed the tomato flavors with the soft silky egg and rice. If you can eat spicy food, you will enjoy this. *Grilled pork jowl- The pork jowl was cooked to perfection with a nice tender snappy texture. The char was perfect with the right amount of seasoning to be enjoyed with the rice. The garlic levels up the dish adding so much aroma and texture. The egg was soft, light and fluffy. I will be thinking about this dish for the rest of the week, I assure you. We came right at opening on a Sunday and the restaurant filled up pretty fast. The outdoor seating is limited to about 4 small tables. The outdoor covered patio belongs to the restaurant next door so don't expect it to be covered. I would agree with most of the Yelp reviews in that you should come before 9 am to be seated promptly. The food is fantastic all around. I have no notes. Great little Thai brunch spot, the inside is quite small so expect getting cozy with the other patrons, unless it's a beautiful day like today and you get to enjoy outside seating in their select tables right outside their front door. We had our dog Maple with us, so it was perfect. They brought her out a water, that was very kind. The service here is nice and friendly. The Nam Tao Hu was a soothing, warm, lovely drink that is described very well as "mom's hug" This menu has all meat (strong focus on piggies) so I only had one choice which was the Vegan lava eggs (Just Egg with mushrooms). They were beautiful and gone too fast! Next were the Khanom Krok (coconut cakes) that resemble a sliced egg with toppings including sweet corn, green onion, and yam. The perfect hybrid of sweet and savory. For the mains I tried the Sai Oua ~ pork or chicken Chiang Mai style sausage with lava eggs over choice of brown/white rice and what I believed to be a chili paste. Honestly..heavenly. When I think about Thai food for breakfast, my first thought is the Wat Mongkolratanaram (aka Thai Temple) in Berkeley, but now Tanzie's adds another option. However, unlike Thai Temple, the food here feels much more American in the presentation but the flavours is anything but. The menu here is very simple, but the presentation is amazingly elegant. I came here with a couple of friends and we ordered the Market Salad, Nam Prika Kha, Nam Prik Ong, and Sai Oua and none of the food disappointed. The market salad was sweet and salty, and there was a lot of flavor and spice in all of the lava egg dishes we ordered. The portion size I thought was just right and we even had a little bit of leftover afterwards too. I will say that you should not come here expecting flavours similar to other Thai restaurants that serve Pad Thai, fried rice, curries, and the like. The flavours here are much stronger and more pungent than other Thai restaurants. The people here are friendly and warm and you can tell that they wanted to really share the flavours of Northern Thailand with customers. I was excited to try Tanzie's. The reviews were positive, and the menu looked intriguing. There was a wait, but it wasn't unreasonable, and the restaurant maintained a steady line of guests. Upon being seated, I was eager to explore the menu, and our server enthusiastically shared details about the dishes. We placed our drink order while reviewing our options. However, as time passed, I began noticing issues around me. Tables weren't being cleared promptly, creating delays in seating and service. While the menu explanations were thorough, they seemed to take precedence over actual service, causing unnecessary lags in order-taking. We waited so long that the host who seated us ultimately stepped in to take our order. They were incredibly gracious, but our main server appeared blithely unaware of the delay or the overall breakdown of our experience. Drinks were another issue. While other tables that arrived after us were served, ours had yet to come out. We had to flag down the person making espresso drinks, and while they quickly expedited our order, the drinks were incorrectly prepared. Mistakes happen, but our server neither acknowledged the error nor made any effort to rectify it. Again, it was the host--who was already juggling seating, waitlist management, and table follow-ups--who provided updates on our food. Throughout the wait, we received no proactive check-ins, which was especially frustrating since we hadn't even ordered small plates. As for the food, it was solid but lacked the meticulous attention to detail that could elevate the experience. My pork belly (Gaeng Hung Le) skillet had inconsistencies--some pieces were all fat, while others had a well-balanced ratio of rendered fat and meat. The dish was rich but could have used a touch more restraint to feel cohesive. My partner's Nam Prik Ong Skillet seemed enjoyable, particularly the sausage, though when I ordered a side of it, I found it overcooked and overly charred in some areas. Overall, the food was good, but the service was severely lacking. If the food had been exceptional, I might have been willing to overlook the service issues, but that wasn't the case. To our main server: less time should be spent making distasteful jokes about a guest's food assessment and more time ensuring quality service. Everything was exceptional. The Khanom Krokhad a delightful creamy consistency with toppings that added texture. My favorite was lava eggs. Tanzie's offers a unique perspective on Thai food by offering food styles from northern Thailand (as opposed to 99% of other Thai restaurants out there). One of Berkeley's hidden gems for brunch. Popped in on a Saturday around noon and found a crowd hovering outside. The wait system was a bit chaotic for me as a first timer. One server was taking names by memory of who got there first, then put them into the system's waitlist, which was impressive but risky. You really can't trust hangry people with the honor system We waited about 30 minutes and finally got a table. We started with the coconut cakes along with the ube drink and hot soymilk. The coconut cakes were incredibly delicious. Every bite was a flavor bomb. Definitely best enjoyed hot out of the kitchen. For mains, we had the grilled pork bowl and the beef shank lava plates. Both were fantastic but the pork jowl was the star. Savory, tender, and perfect with the lava eggs. The beef shank leaned heavier on the lemongrass, still delicious, just not as balanced as the pork. Once you're seated, the food and service are amazing. Definitely worth the wait, just bring your patience for the line outside. The patio was pretty full but there were 3 available tables for me to sit, when I said I wanted to sit at the outdoor tables they said I could only sit indoors mind you it is 85 degrees with no air conditioning. They really need to get some customer service and common sense here it makes no sense. I don't want to sit in that dusty indoor space with no air-conditioning and after I told them I only wanted to sit outdoors They refused to sit me at the EMPTY tables, get some customer service and get some common sense just purely ridiculous. They were out of the khanom Krok so didn't get to try it :( The seating system is very stupid. They section off an area with signs to stay behind and not block the sidewalk, which is great. And that's where a lot of people were waiting, AFTER they put their name down, so it was just an unorganized crowd of people. But my party and another party who didn't have their name down were forced to go hunt down a server to get our name down. Thus not staying behind line, servers ignore you exacerbating the problem as we weren't sure what to do. One server was like hey stay behind, when all of us were like, but then how do we put our name down?! Anyway it was a solid 5 minutes of being lost. Solution? PUT A PAPER TO SIGN UP NEXT TO THE SIGN. So easy omg. Let people write down their own name. Why create more work for the server and confusion for customers? And yes this defeats the purpose of not crowding the sidewalk cuz you're making people wander to figure it out and find the server with the sign up list. The place is extremely small inside, but they try to serve as many people as possible with all their tables very closed together. We had to call for a server who grabbed our order, and the wait time for food was roughly an hour. However, the menu does tell us to be patient with our food as they cook! The Thai Beignets were light and fluffy. Super airy and crispy! I asked what made the beignets thai, and our server said the addition of condensed milk as a dip. I also got the Sai Oua with Chicken, and I enjoyed my dish! The chicken was shaped in little patties and it was flavorful with lemongrass hints. My eggs were strong with the heavy cream though, but my friends said their eggs were light. Trying a bit of my friends, the pork jowl was nice and crispy. It had a good chew and char to it. The beef shank was also really tender and a little spicy! And the pork belly was very melty. The inside of the restaurant is adorable, and we were able to sit in the larger table in the back with comfy cushions and lovely flowers. We all ordered the Khanom Kirk, Sai Oua, and Gaeng Hung Le which were all popular dishes. The eggs were delicious as they were light and fluffy. The Khanom Kirk (coconut bites) were delicious with each of them with different toppings. As for drinks, my favorites were the Jasmine Thai tea and hug from mom! Gaeng Hung Le -- spicy and sweet, the pork was cooked well and melted nicely with every bite. I am not too good with spice so I underestimated how spicy this dish was. Grilled Pork Jowl -- tender and chewy pieces of meat, paired with buttery soft eggs and rice. Very yummy with hints of fried garlic. Thai Beignets -- simple beignets paired with condensed milk. It had a fried texture, not as fluffy as your traditional beignet. Iced Jasmine Thai Tea -- smooth and light drink. I love drinking Jasmine Thai Tea this was really good! Cha Manow -- more sour than I thought, there was supposed to be honey but it didn't over power the sourness of the lemonade. Overall it seems like a really homey restaurant, the ambiance was nice and warm. The only downside is that it is super busy on the weekend, I went on a Sunday and it took more than an hour to get seated for 2 people but the servers were nice. read more
