I'm genuinely so confused how this place has so many 5 star reviews. Like many others I saw a video about Tanzie's online and geez people are just raving about it... Here's the good, the bad, and the ugly. The Good- The eggs were surprisingly good, wait time is naught on a Monday afternoon. The waitresses were nice. The Bad- The green Thai chia bowl was 18 dollars for a scoop of green colored chia seeds and some sliced fruits... The servings are rather small for the steep prices. We left hungry after a $75 bill. The Ugly- We ordered the Thai beignets and were disappointed to find two hairs fried into the dough. The drinks were terrible as well, we ordered the Thai tea, which--I've had better at Vietnamese restaurants...-- as well as an espresso drink. As a barista myself the espresso was not good, it tasted strongly bitter. Overall, I will not be coming back and I also would dissuade anyone from spending their money here. read more

Amazing Thai brunch spot in Berkeley! My friends and I got here on a busy Sunday morning and waited around 45 minutes to be seated. It was so worth the wait in my opinion! We all got the Tornado Egg with Pork Jowl. The pork jowl was crispy and juicy, while the tornado egg was so soft and buttery! We also tried the Thai Tea and Jasmine Thai Tea. Both had great flavor and would be on my recommendations list. I would love to come back and try other items. They have both indoor and outdoor seating, they definitely need the outdoor seating because there's not that much room indoors . The menu isn't huge but the food is beyond delicious !!! The Jasmine Thai milk tea was great, not super sweet but a delicious floral jasmine taste . The Thai beignets kind of tasted like a Chinese donut but slightly doughier . Delicious food and in a cute, homey space. Workers were attentive and friendly. We ordered the pork jowl, the nam prik ong, thai beignets, thai tea, and the strawberry mukrat matcha. The meals were tasty and were good sized portions. Thai beignets were soft and light and the condensed milk added a good sweetness to it. The strawberry mukrat matcha could have been a little sweeter. I am interested to try their other drinks though. Seating is quite small here so there might be a bit of a wait. We went on a saturday around 12:30p and maybe wait 5-10min. It's a small space so the tables are very close to one another. The owner was my server. She was very friendly. I got the lava eggs with sausage and it was so tasty. as a brunch lover, tanzie's thai brunch met my cravings! the restaurant is fairly small with some residential street parking around it, so be prepared to wait as the service is a bit slow. the inside of the restaurant feels super homey, and the menu is pretty limited. gaeng hung le - this was the star of the meal!! i will say that it is so flavorful that you might get sick of it after a couple bites, so definitely share if you are planning on getting this dish. regardless, the rice reminds me of a sticky rice with fatty, juicy pork nam prik ong - the sausage is a little bit like indonesian satay, and i love how they cook the rice so it is super flavorful. sai oua - we got this with pork, and it was the same kind of meat as the nam prik ong dish. the egg is super buttery and soft, but i would definitely go with the skillet dish over this if you have to pick. jiu nung nam prik ha - the meat was tasty, but the sauce was just not it. i knew it'd be heavy on the ginger but even my parents who can handle/enjoy ginger found it to have a weird aftertaste. thai beignet - this is exactly like chinese donut, except so much chewier, kind of like mochi! it pairs well with the condensed milk and is a good appetizer. despite the long wait, i think it's absolutely worth it to check out tanzie's! read more

This is a cute spot with leaf seat cushions and beautiful food that actually tastes as good as it looks. Tanzie served my group; I appreciate the double-check on allergens. For future reference: of the savory dishes, only the vegan egg has no nuts or shellfish. We ordered the nam prik kha lava egg, vegan lava egg, pork jowl, and gaeng hung le; I can't speak to the quality of the latter two, but I know that the peanuts in the gaeng hung le kept some of their original texture and that it was incredibly filling. The vegan eggs and butter are indistinguishable from the real thing and are really eggy eggs. The mushrooms there have good texture, and the vegan fish sauce is reminiscent of salsa and strong on the alliums in a good way. The nam prik kha comprises beef shank and a sauce of galangal, chilis, and garlic. The shank is even. I want to say the sauce also has lemongrass; the smell, as is the taste, is punchy, galangal-forward, beautiful. The sauce is fresh and balances the meat even without a vegetable serving on the plate. The spice level is appropriate, if a bit under. I'd come back to try the seasonal Dungeness crab egg (available now), the nam prik ong, and the stunning chia bowl. read more

Heard about this new spot from a sibling who works nearby so had to try to after looking at the food photos from Yelp. Came on a whim on chilly Sunday at noon and waited for over an hour to be seated. It's a tiny establishment so there are only eight tables inside and a few outside with a couple of 2-top tables. Once seated inside, our server took our orders and went back to running around like a headless chicken. Despite being super busy, the khanom krok and Thai beignets came out quickly to give our blood sugar a little boost. Shortly after, our drinks arrived looking so beautiful. The Cara Cara OJ was freshly squeezed and deliciously smooth. The Thai Iced Tea was perfectly balanced with sweetness and creaminess. The foam top was nice touch which you rarely ever see, if ever. They recently came out with the dirty ube latte and we had both the dirty and non-dirty versions. The ube is flavored condensed milk, which gave it a really nice and strong purple yam taste. Both were delicious! Nam Tao Hu was pleasantly good. I could do without the ginkgo seeds though. I wish I could give .5 stars, because I would've rated this a 4.5! The food and the service was so good, the only thing keeping me from giving Tanzie's a 5 is the wait time. My parents and sister ate here yesterday, and after seeing their pictures, I asked if we could all go today. They didn't even hesitate to say yes Today, we had an iced mocha with oatmilk, brewed coffee, iced americano, and iced strawberry makrut matcha. All the drinks were very good. I had the mocha, and I loved that there were crunchy chocolate bits at the bottom. For food, we got the grilled pork jowl, Nam Prik Ong, and Nam Prik Kha, and Thai beignets. The grilled pork jowl was crispy and smoky, and paired perfectly with the runny, savory lava eggs. The Nam Prik Ong was reminiscent of a corned beef hash but without potato, and was a little spicy. The Nam Prik Kha had such tender beef shank that was flavorful throughout. The beignets were nice and fluffy and honestly didn't need the condensed milk, but the condensed milk was very good, nonetheless. Overall, Tanzie's was a great experience. I love this place! I've been back twice since it opened. Really cozy ambiance and delicious food. My favorite by far is the sai oua with chicken - the eggs are so light and fluffy, and the lemongrass flavoring in the chicken is delicious. I've also tried it with pork (still great, but like the chicken more), the Nam Prik Ong skillet (also yum!), Gaeng Hung Le (sweeter than I'd have liked), the chia bowl (beautiful presentation, light and yummy). Street parking was a bit difficult on a weekend but manageable since the restaurant is located in a residential area. The place was very cozy, had cute decorations and a fireplace. The menu was simple, which I liked. We ordered: -Thai beignets: a side order comes with two beignets and condensed milk for dipping. It was fried and I liked how it was not too oily. -lava eggs with sai oua: they have lava eggs with a variety of meats (pork, chicken, ham) or a vegan option. Comes with a choice of plain white or brown rice. The rice came with a sauce on the side which we put on top of the rice (a bit spicy). The sausage was flavorful but the meat portion was small. -gaeng hung le: the rice was spicy but very flavorful. The pork belly was the best part, so tender with a slightly sweet taste. But a bit pricey for the skillets. -jasmine Thai tea: we got the drinks to go otherwise they serve them in cute glass jars. I've only tried the regular Thai tea so I was excited to try the jasmine tea. The color was similar to matcha but tasted very different. Very flowering taste, but I still prefer the regular Thai tea. Overall, it's a good new spot to try with unique Thai breakfast options. The staff are nice and friendly, and the decorations are cute. Overall, we don't understand what the hype is about. It seems like you are paying for the ambiance, which is quite aesthetic. It's cozy with a nice fireplace in the corner and there are lots of beautiful plants everywhere. Unfortunately, we found the food lackluster and the service bad. ~Details~ We had to actively flag someone down to take our order, and the entire flagging down process took 15 minutes. It took at least 35-40 minutes from the time we sat down to when our first dish arrived which is surprising because the dishes are mostly rice. We were not the only ones waiting this long. I understand that they just opened - this might explain their service issues. Unfortunately, the food was a major disappointment for our group. We were looking forward to it after seeing it on KQED and the Chronicle, but we left not sure why it was recommended. ~Dishes we tried~ Gaeng Hung le sizzling skillet: - Both sizzling skillets are misnomers. In this dish, the rice was mixed with a curry sauce and the rice took up most of the dish. The pork belly in the Gaeng Hung was very tough and the meat itself was not very flavorful (felt as if a lot of the flavor was on the outside of the meat. The meat itself was quite bland). Nam prik ong sizzling skillet: - The nam prik ong...it was a travesty that it cost this much. It says that it was serviced with sliced sai oua but there was only one measly sai oua and most of the plate was rice, one fried egg, and a tomato. This should not cost $26. Grilled pork jowl with lava eggs: - We got the pork jowl and we added on a side of thai beignets. We're not sure what made the beignets Thai. They were essentially doughnuts with condensed milk on the side. The side was just too small pieces, which frankly does seem like a good deal compared to getting a full side which would only be 3 pieces. The grilled pork jowl was the most delicious of the meat options that we received but what made it stand out was the crispy garlic. It was mostly dried out though, as if it had been sitting out for a while. The lava eggs looked aesthetic but the photos are misleading. It's mostly eggs on top of a large pile of rice, even though the photos make it seem like you are receiving more egg. read more

I had such a great experience at Tanzie's! I came here with a larger group of 7 people and the service was fantastic. I will note we had to wait about 15-20 minutes to sit down, and there's no air conditioning (we came during the heatwave over the summer). But the food and drinks were delicious! I got the green thai tea and grilled pork jowl and they were both so good, I easily finished everything. The servers were soooo sweet here. I think the owner came to talk to us and told us about her story immigrating here and opening the restaurant. I love this place and definitely will be back to try more of the menu!! read more

Tanzie's is worth a small detour. I read the two enthusiastic articles about this restaurant that Berkeleyside published in its Nosh section; the more recent article (December 13, 2024) concerned the introduction of dinner service at Tanzie's. We went for lunch instead, guessing that there wouldn't be a wait on a Monday after New Year's during UC Berkeley's spring break. The three of us did get a table without waiting, but we were pretty lucky: the dining room was completely full between noon and 1PM, even on what I imagined would be a slow day. There was only one server in the room (Krissana Tussanaprasit, I believe), and she was mighty busy. Every table needed to wait its turn. I had the sai oua with sausage and a lava egg. The dish is described by Berkeleyside: "Sai oua requires more steps than the already multi-step process for most sausages, marinating the chicken or pork first in a house-made shrimp paste, and then flavoring it with more shrimp paste and lemongrass, birds-eye chiles, makrut lime leaves, basil and cilantro." This sad oua was really good! We had espresso drinks after our main courses (two cappuccinos and one cortado), and they were fine. I'm very happy to have visited Tanzie's and would be pleased to return some day if I had reason to think that the dining room might be less than fully tight. It's possible to get reservations for dinner, which ought to sidestep the problem of potential waiting for a space. read more

Drive past this place often and there is always a line and/or it is PACKED! Decided to try it out and WOW were we truly blown away! The pork jowl doesnt look like much in pictures but once consumed it was truly amazing. The meat is so tender and flavorful! Paired perfectly with the rice and eggs. Definitely a must to get when here! - We also ordered the Iced Strawberry Makrut Matcha and the Iced Mango Matcha. I will say the fruit in the drinks were fresh and yummy but the overall drinks were just okay. Nothing amazing but wasn't bad either. I thought it would be sweeter. If you don't like sweet drink and want something refreshing and simple then this is still a great option. We sat outside and it was perfect weather for it too. They had nice big umbrellas to cover the sun. When it comes to parking, it can be a little difficult as the restaurant is on a busy intersection but the benefit is that it is in a safe neighborhood and the parking is within the neighborhood and cross streets. Thankfully, the weather was beautiful while we waited for our table. We scored an outdoors table with a patio umbrella (helpful due to the strong sunlight). We ordered the appetizer (small dumplings), and market salad to share. The salad with persimmons, pomegranate seeds, etc. was a solid winner. We each got variation of lava eggs. I'm from socal and most of the Thai places I go to serve southern Thai food. Tanzie's does northern Thai food and, girl it is DELICIOUS. Our waitress recommended the items we got. We ordered Gaeng Hung Le, Jin Nung Nam Prik Kha, the coconut patties, and the Jasmine Thai Tea. Everything was phenomenal. The meat was tender and well seasoned. The rice that came with the Jin Nung Nam Prik Kha was something to die for. I also loved the Jasmine Thai Tea. Given that a lot of tea/boba shops will up charge drinks like crazy, the Jasmine Thai Tea is a delicious, refreshing, and worth the price. The restaurant itself is super cute.
