I wish I could give .5 stars, because I would've rated this a 4.5! The food and the service was so good, the only thing keeping me from giving Tanzie's a 5 is the wait time. My parents and sister ate here yesterday, and after seeing their pictures, I asked if we could all go today. They didn't even hesitate to say yes Today, we had an iced mocha with oatmilk, brewed coffee, iced americano, and iced strawberry makrut matcha. All the drinks were very good. I had the mocha, and I loved that there were crunchy chocolate bits at the bottom. For food, we got the grilled pork jowl, Nam Prik Ong, and Nam Prik Kha, and Thai beignets. The grilled pork jowl was crispy and smoky, and paired perfectly with the runny, savory lava eggs. The Nam Prik Ong was reminiscent of a corned beef hash but without potato, and was a little spicy. The Nam Prik Kha had such tender beef shank that was flavorful throughout. The beignets were nice and fluffy and honestly didn't need the condensed milk, but the condensed milk was very good, nonetheless. Overall, Tanzie's was a great experience. A casual, quaint brunch spot with delicious food. I will definitely be eating here again! read more

I had such a great experience at Tanzie's! I came here with a larger group of 7 people and the service was fantastic. I will note we had to wait about 15-20 minutes to sit down, and there's no air conditioning (we came during the heatwave over the summer). But the food and drinks were delicious! I got the green thai tea and grilled pork jowl and they were both so good, I easily finished everything. The servers were soooo sweet here. I think the owner came to talk to us and told us about her story immigrating here and opening the restaurant. I love this place and definitely will be back to try more of the menu!! read more

Tanzie's is worth a small detour. I read the two enthusiastic articles about this restaurant that Berkeleyside published in its Nosh section; the more recent article (December 13, 2024) concerned the introduction of dinner service at Tanzie's. We went for lunch instead, guessing that there wouldn't be a wait on a Monday after New Year's during UC Berkeley's spring break. The three of us did get a table without waiting, but we were pretty lucky: the dining room was completely full between noon and 1PM, even on what I imagined would be a slow day. There was only one server in the room (Krissana Tussanaprasit, I believe), and she was mighty busy. Every table needed to wait its turn. I had the sai oua with sausage and a lava egg. The dish is described by Berkeleyside: "Sai oua requires more steps than the already multi-step process for most sausages, marinating the chicken or pork first in a house-made shrimp paste, and then flavoring it with more shrimp paste and lemongrass, birds-eye chiles, makrut lime leaves, basil and cilantro." This sad oua was really good! We had espresso drinks after our main courses (two cappuccinos and one cortado), and they were fine. I'm very happy to have visited Tanzie's and would be pleased to return some day if I had reason to think that the dining room might be less than fully tight. It's possible to get reservations for dinner, which ought to sidestep the problem of potential waiting for a space. read more

Drive past this place often and there is always a line and/or it is PACKED! Decided to try it out and WOW were we truly blown away! Nothing is better than having an Asian style breakfast/brunch and this truly felt like a homemade meal made with love and care. Here is what we ordered: - Khanom Krok: So delicious and a fun way to start off the meal! They were all delicious but my favorite was the corn one. Loved the texture and taste of it. - Thai Beignets: Small fluffy goodness with a delicious condensed milk dipping sauce on the side! Again, another great but simple starter. - Green Beans w/ fried garlic: Green beans were amazing! They still had a nice crunch to it so no soggy beans here. The fried garlic on top was the best part and really highlighted the plate. - I had ordered their special of the day which was their Dungeness crab lava egg with white rice. What a great choice!! The crab was sweet, soft, garlic and buttery! It paired so well with the rice and the sauce it comes with on the side, which was citrusy, salty (in the best of way), and aromatic. - My BF ordered the Grilled Pork Jowl and WOW! The pork jowl doesnt look like much in pictures but once consumed it was truly amazing. The meat is so tender and flavorful! Paired perfectly with the rice and eggs. Definitely a must to get when here! - We also ordered the Iced Strawberry Makrut Matcha and the Iced Mango Matcha. I will say the fruit in the drinks were fresh and yummy but the overall drinks were just okay. Nothing amazing but wasn't bad either. I thought it would be sweeter. If you don't like sweet drink and want something refreshing and simple then this is still a great option. We sat outside and it was perfect weather for it too. They had nice big umbrellas to cover the sun. When it comes to parking, it can be a little difficult as the restaurant is on a busy intersection but the benefit is that it is in a safe neighborhood and the parking is within the neighborhood and cross streets. This was the most Americanized Thai food I've ever encountered. Their main course concept which is soft scrambled eggs over brown rice with meat or veggies of choice lacked any authentic Thai flavour profile. We ordered the crab special and a vegetable dish, both of which were significantly oversalted. While the coconut cake starters were innovative and flavorful, the mains felt like run of the mill "New Californian" fare. At over $50 per plate (without drinks), the lack of authenticity and high price point make it impossible for me to recommend. read more

I love this place down. It was a beautiful and cozy restaurant with lovely people running it. But the food was just to die for. My advice is skip the food that is more Americanized (like the yogurt bowls) and try something new: totally worth it. The menu was simple, which I liked. We ordered: -Thai beignets: a side order comes with two beignets and condensed milk for dipping. It was fried and I liked how it was not too oily. -lava eggs with sai oua: they have lava eggs with a variety of meats (pork, chicken, ham) or a vegan option. Comes with a choice of plain white or brown rice. The rice came with a sauce on the side which we put on top of the rice (a bit spicy). The sausage was flavorful but the meat portion was small. -gaeng hung le: the rice was spicy but very flavorful. The pork belly was the best part, so tender with a slightly sweet taste. But a bit pricey for the skillets. -jasmine Thai tea: we got the drinks to go otherwise they serve them in cute glass jars. I've only tried the regular Thai tea so I was excited to try the jasmine tea. The color was similar to matcha but tasted very different. Very flowering taste, but I still prefer the regular Thai tea. Overall, it's a good new spot to try with unique Thai breakfast options. The staff are nice and friendly, and the decorations are cute. I'm from socal and most of the Thai places I go to serve southern Thai food. Tanzie's does northern Thai food and, girl it is DELICIOUS. Our waitress recommended the items we got. We ordered Gaeng Hung Le, Jin Nung Nam Prik Kha, the coconut patties, and the Jasmine Thai Tea. Everything was phenomenal. The meat was tender and well seasoned. The rice that came with the Jin Nung Nam Prik Kha was something to die for. I also loved the Jasmine Thai Tea. Given that a lot of tea/boba shops will up charge drinks like crazy, the Jasmine Thai Tea is a delicious, refreshing, and worth the price. The restaurant itself is super cute. Would be a great date spot, brunch with the girls spot, or impress your mom spot. Loved it! Seriously, I would drive 6 hours back to the bay just for this. read more

Overall, we don't understand what the hype is about. It seems like you are paying for the ambiance, which is quite aesthetic. It's cozy with a nice fireplace in the corner and there are lots of beautiful plants everywhere. Unfortunately, we found the food lackluster and the service bad. ~Details~ We had to actively flag someone down to take our order, and the entire flagging down process took 15 minutes. It took at least 35-40 minutes from the time we sat down to when our first dish arrived which is surprising because the dishes are mostly rice. We were not the only ones waiting this long. I understand that they just opened - this might explain their service issues. Unfortunately, the food was a major disappointment for our group. We were looking forward to it after seeing it on KQED and the Chronicle, but we left not sure why it was recommended. ~Dishes we tried~ Gaeng Hung le sizzling skillet: - Both sizzling skillets are misnomers. In this dish, the rice was mixed with a curry sauce and the rice took up most of the dish. The pork belly in the Gaeng Hung was very tough and the meat itself was not very flavorful (felt as if a lot of the flavor was on the outside of the meat. The meat itself was quite bland). Nam prik ong sizzling skillet: - The nam prik ong...it was a travesty that it cost this much. It says that it was serviced with sliced sai oua but there was only one measly sai oua and most of the plate was rice, one fried egg, and a tomato. This should not cost $26. Grilled pork jowl with lava eggs: - We got the pork jowl and we added on a side of thai beignets. We're not sure what made the beignets Thai. They were essentially doughnuts with condensed milk on the side. The side was just too small pieces, which frankly does seem like a good deal compared to getting a full side which would only be 3 pieces. The grilled pork jowl was the most delicious of the meat options that we received but what made it stand out was the crispy garlic. It was mostly dried out though, as if it had been sitting out for a while. The lava eggs looked aesthetic but the photos are misleading. It's mostly eggs on top of a large pile of rice, even though the photos make it seem like you are receiving more egg. read more

AMAZING. PERFECTION. DELICIOSO!!! First of all, the place is adorable. There is both indoor and outdoor seating, and both are super cute. The tables are set up with the cutest little glasses and flowers. It's adorable inside, and tons of people were taking cutie pictures. Service is amazing, the hostess is actually the sweetest, and the waiter kept coming to ask if we needed anything. And not in an annoying way, in like a helpful way. Finally, the food is AMAZING. The presentation so clearly has a lot of effort put into it, it looks just like it does on the website. Beyond that, it tasted amazing. It has a unique flavor, which is what you want in a Thai breakfast place. The matcha tasted genuine, and not cheap or pre-made. For how carefully everything is made, you would think that the wait would be forever, but it wasn't! Another plus, there is plenty of parking in the neighborhood! Tanzie's has a unique menu, with a variety of interesting combinations and flavors. We had the opportunity to try a few of their items, and I likely enjoyed their beignets the most out of their food items. I tried their sai oua with their sausage, which was slightly overpowering with regards to lemongrass flavor for my taste, although my wife enjoyed it. We also got the nam prik ong, which was flavorful but the portion I had was surprisingly spicy, to the extent that I couldn't finish the dish. Their lava eggs were fun, and had a nice flavor and texture to it. Overall, I felt that Tanzie's had some different dishes and different approaches to dishes compared to what I had experienced before. The price was a bit on the higher end, and while the rice portion was generous on ours, the remainder of the toppings were not quite as generous. read more

Dined here with my friends as a treat after finals, and Tanzie's delivered! The wait was longer, around 20-30 minutes since we arrived around lunchtime. But service was lovely, engaging, and attentive to all of our accommodations, and the food made every minute worth it. Tanzie's started us off with soft and delightful beignets, which came with a side of condensed milk. Then came the main dish: Scallop with Lava Egg and Rice, per the waiter's recommendation. Slow cooked to buttery perfection, the lava egg was so delicious with the added scallops, but the star of the show HAD to be the vegan fish oil sauce. It was love at first taste -- my mind was BLOWN by the sheer magnitude of flavor and spice. Really packs a punch and leaves your mouth watering for more. Enticed by the idea of a matcha, I ended up ordering an iced strawberry matcha drink. The colors were beautiful and I was so eager to try -- but it just fell short of my expectations. There was too much ice in both my friend's matcha mango and my matcha strawberry beverage, diluting any sweetness or flavor unique to the matcha present in the drink. That's not to say all of their beverages are subpar, though: my friends who ordered their seasonal honeydew juice thoroughly enjoyed their drinks, liking that it wasn't too sweet. I met up with a friend for lunch on a weekday, and Tanzie's was surprisingly packed. The menu is unusual / unique, mostly focusing on egg dishes. We ordered the coconut cakes and the sai oua lava eggs with pork sausage and brown rice. The eggs, sausage and rice were good, almost reminding me of deconstructed fried rice dish. The coconut cakes were unlike anything I've had before - they are oblong "disks", almost shaped like halved eggs. They are definitely more like a dessert than a main course as they are quite sweet. The coconut cakes are really delicious. Service can be a bit slow so not the place for you if you're looking for a quick lunch. read more

It's definitely a busy spot; tons of people, not too many staff, and pretty crowded inside, so expect to wait a bit both to get seated and for service in general. Super friendly though. I got the Nam Prik Kha, and it was delicious. The egg is actually some of the best I've ever had. I don't like my eggs super runny, so when I cook them myself, I just blast them until they're super cooked. They did an awesome job at making them not runny, but still wonderfully tender and buttery. Also super well seasoned. The sliced beef was also amazing. The right amount of chew, combined with this slightly spicy flavorful sauce. Definitely come out here, won't regret it! read more

Had a fantastic experience. Food and service were positive. Decor was very home-y. Seating was comfortable. Ordered the sai oua (chicken sausage, lava eggs, and rice). The sausage was savory but a bit on the drier side. Mixing with the lava eggs and rice solved this concern, but would have been more pleasant if the sausage was more moist. The khanom krok (coconut based pancakes) were amazing. Extremely light and delicate with plenty of flavor. The beignets were just the right amount of sweet and they were extremely flaky (positive!). I had vegetarian lava eggs with the vegan accompaniment. I thought it was going to be confusing to order because I wanted real eggs but no meat, but the server knew exactly what I meant and put me at ease. The spices are just right--flavorful mixes and lots of roasted garlic. Everything was good--cute location, delicious food, and welcoming service. I ordered the beef shank dish, which consists of sliced slow-cooked beef shank, with rice (brown or white) topped with their Lava eggs (a distinctive style of scrambled eggs), and it was fantastic. The beef was so tasty and tender. We also tried a special, eggs with scallops, which was also very yum. The drinks are good too. Staff are friendly and helpful. As we had our lunch late, we ended up as the only customer and chatted with Tanzie herself, which was fun. It's on the expensive side, and you can tell there are top notch ingredients used. very cute and cozy place to have thai brunch with some friends and family. the employees were kind and attentive and the wait for two people didnt take as long as we expected during the afternoon. we opted for strawberry and peach matcha which uses puree made in house as well as the thai beignets, nam prik kha, and pork jowl. the thai beignets is def a staple that the table should try-- i kind of wanted another plate after finishing it! the entrees were delightful and i was kind of skeptical about how good these lava eggs were but they were pretty good imo! very light and fluffy and pairs well withw hatever protein you choose. if u like a little kick to your protein choose the nam prik kha. the pork jowl is a great and safe option that is both savory and sweet. the food is def good but it came out to around 40/person so i wont make many trips here read more

This was my second time there and it was just as amazing as the first. I had the sai oua with house-made pork sausages, lava eggs and white rice. The sausages aren't overly salty and have a nice mix of spices in them. The lava eggs are delicious and a must try along with the salsa mix they serve on the side. If the salsa isn't spicy enough, I think you can ask for a supplement with Thai bird-eye chilis. Where I didn't think the dish was spicy, I'm also too much of a baby for the bird-eye chilis. I personally thought it was enough flavor to carry the dish. The lattes are great and worth sitting and sipping while reading my book.
