Tldr: Overall good flavor profile but some room for improvement for the price point We ordered the soy milk, fresh squeezed blood orange juice ($7), khanom krok (coconut cakes; $14), thai beignets ($8), and the grilled pork jowl ($22). The soy milk was nice and warm (it had some toppings that I'm probably not culturally involved enough to enjoy) and the blood orange juice did feel really fresh. Khanom krok was super interesting and enjoyable but we wished each of the toppings added a little more than they currently did as other than the chive one the toppings sort of had a subtle effect on flavor and seemed like they were mostly there for texture. They sort of reminded me of a coconutty version of this pastry in Korea they sell on the street called "deli manju." The thai beignets are fried dough that you dip in condensed milk. They're better hot so I sort of wish they were listed under dessert so they can come out at the end of the meal. Lastly, the grilled pork jowl seemed slightly overcooked as there were parts of the meat that were sort of burnt. Additionally, the garlic chips, while they looked nice and golden, also had a slightly burnt bitter taste to them as well. There were also some wilty cilantro on top. The egg was nice and fluffy so it felt like when done right this would be a good filling brunch dish. It's a pretty small spot and fills up quick. We went for Saturday brunch and at 10 o'clock we were able to sit right away but when we left there was already a line. read more

For drinks, we ordered the strawberry makrut matcha, orange matcha, and jasmine thai tea. I wouldn't recommend any of them since the drink had more than 50% ice and were all very watered down. As for the food, we tried the lava eggs + grilled pork jowl and the jasmine thai tea acai bowl. I wouldn't recommend the acai bowl. The fruit was sour, and the overall flavor wasn't what I expected. A delicious brunch in a cute and cozy space! The owner Tanzie brings flavors from Chiang Mai into their vibrant menu of Thai specialties, rice dishes, and more. My friend and I started with the jasmine thai tea chia bowl which is topped with so many delicious tropical fruits, granola, coconut shreds, and a strawberry syrup. The chia pudding itself is made with green thai tea and very jasmine floral-forward. The lava egg is an absolute must get. This scrambled egg is on a whole other level. It's perfectly jammy and buttery that will make you want it in each bite. I opted for the grilled pork jowl, which I've never seen outside of a kbbq menu, let alone a brunch menu. It's similar pork belly but not as fatty and chewy. It's also tossed in crispy fried garlic! This dish is now in my list of greatest brunch meals of all time. I washed all this down with their strawberry makrut matcha latte, which was very light on flavor and sweetness. Overall, this place was incredible and I'm already waiting for my next visit. My first time at Tanzie's. Honestly, not on my todo list but we were visiting our son and he wanted to take us here. Not too far from his house and street parking was a snap. We walked in to this small shop and could immediately see how popular they are. We (3 of us) got the last table. After being seated our very delightful waitress brought us water and menus. We were a party of 7 with a stroller and luckily, they have a small private dining area in the back to accommodate. Otherwise, the rest of the restaurant is small and at most a 3 seater table. They no longer have access to the outdoor patio seating because Homestyle reopened. Parking can be challenging and is mostly in residential area. Staff was friendly and prompt. Dishes were pricey, like $25+. The mango matcha was yummy! Not too sweet and refreshing. The other girls who ordered regular matcha, needed to ask for some simple syrup to make it sweeter. I ordered the crab special entree which was super yummy and the green sauce that comes with it, adds more pop in in the dish! Everyone loved their food which was a good sign. I've been here several times now! This past time I went with a group of friend for lunch on a Saturday. We got there are 11:15am and there was an hour wait. Definitely go earlier if you choose to go in on a weekend brunch time since it will be full. Unfortunately, they do not have a text system set up so you have to wait near the restaurant. Under the eggs is just rice but the pork is so good! Getting a bite of all three things is the way to go. I wish they gave me a knife to cut the meat up smaller. The pork is juicy and very flavorful with lots of minced garlic. This is my go to dish here and a must try! (8/10) Nam tao hu, I am already a big fan of soymilk, so I know I have to get this. Chiang Mai but in Berkeley? This place is a real gem located at Dwight and Sacramento st. Super cute inside with drinks to die for. Place is so beautiful inside. We had a six top and got a Ube latte, orange matcha latte, and a mango matcha latte. All were great but the ube was great. We got the coconut starters, not sure really how to explain it but like a warm coconut sweet treat. Get them, so unique and delicious. My friends and I stopped by Tanzie's on a Sunday at 11:30 a.m. and it took about 45 minutes for our large group of 6 to be seated. If you're dining in a group, you'll definitely have long wait times as there's only one large table in the restaurant for six and another large table for four. However, if you're only stopping by as a couple, wait times didn't seem to be that bad. Once we were seated however, service and food were very prompt. Our table shared two orders of the coconut bites and beignets. While everyone really enjoyed the coconut bites, each topped with a different topping (yam, corn, scallion, purple yam, and sesame seeds), we thought the beignets were pretty unremarkable and desperately needed the condensed milk to be enjoyable. For our mains, my wife ordered the lava eggs with the pork Thai sausage while I ordered the chai bowl with fruit. I loved how fluffy the soft scrambled eggs were and really enjoyed all the herbs and spices packed into the sausage. The sausage is a little spicy but is perfectly tolerable with the rice. If you're stuck on which protein to order, I would highly recommend trying out the sausage. The chia bowl doesn't look like a ton of food but I was surprisingly pretty satisfied after finishing the whole bowl. Some fruits were more ripe than others, but I really enjoyed the variety in every bite. The honey soaked granola and toasted coconut flakes provided a nice crunchy texture to contrast the chia seeds underneath. Overall, I had a pretty good meal at Tanzie's! Last thing I wanted to note is to consider inquiring about the price of their specials before placing your order for it. Our waitress advertised the Dungeness crab as the special protein they were seasonally offering for the lava eggs, but we weren't informed it was $40 compared to the other proteins which were closer to $25. We also got the iced strawberry makrut matcha and iced jasmine thai tea (both with oat milk). All the food was so good! I recommend all 3 of these items. They were able to make it with oat milk and take away the milk foam. Both my companion and I were curious about their Lava Eggs. I had the Sai Oua with Chicken and he had the Nam Prik Ong both with White Rice. The eggs were wonderful--buttery, light, and so fluffy! My Sai Oua was heavy on lemongrass, savory, herby, and spicy. I have such a low spice tolerance so the one chili pepper did me in! My companion's dish was good and tomatoey. I will say his was super spicy, it had two peppers but for me, one bite was enough. The food was good but spicy so being we both have a lower tolerance, I don't think we'll come back anytime soon oops. When the time comes, I am curious about their other items! If you like spicy food and want a more unique brunch, Tanzie's in Berkeley needs to be on your list! It's a super popular spot for all ages, especially those who enjoy Thai food and spicy food. A very unique culinary experience in Thai influenced brunch! I came with a party for 4 and the wait was pretty long but the quality of the food was totally worth it! We shared an order of the khanom krok, bite sized coconut cakes which were pretty good. The spices were strong as each bite packed some heat. The depth of flavors were great and multidimensional. I really enjoyed the tomato flavors with the soft silky egg and rice. If you can eat spicy food, you will enjoy this. *Grilled pork jowl- The pork jowl was cooked to perfection with a nice tender snappy texture. The char was perfect with the right amount of seasoning to be enjoyed with the rice. The garlic levels up the dish adding so much aroma and texture. The egg was soft, light and fluffy. I will be thinking about this dish for the rest of the week, I assure you. We came right at opening on a Sunday and the restaurant filled up pretty fast. The outdoor seating is limited to about 4 small tables. The outdoor covered patio belongs to the restaurant next door so don't expect it to be covered. I would agree with most of the Yelp reviews in that you should come before 9 am to be seated promptly. The food is fantastic all around. I have no notes. When I think about Thai food for breakfast, my first thought is the Wat Mongkolratanaram (aka Thai Temple) in Berkeley, but now Tanzie's adds another option. However, unlike Thai Temple, the food here feels much more American in the presentation but the flavours is anything but. The menu here is very simple, but the presentation is amazingly elegant. I came here with a couple of friends and we ordered the Market Salad, Nam Prika Kha, Nam Prik Ong, and Sai Oua and none of the food disappointed. The market salad was sweet and salty, and there was a lot of flavor and spice in all of the lava egg dishes we ordered. The portion size I thought was just right and we even had a little bit of leftover afterwards too. I will say that you should not come here expecting flavours similar to other Thai restaurants that serve Pad Thai, fried rice, curries, and the like. The flavours here are much stronger and more pungent than other Thai restaurants. The people here are friendly and warm and you can tell that they wanted to really share the flavours of Northern Thailand with customers. We will definitely be back to try the rest of the menu. read more

The eggs were so soft and gooey it felt like I was biting into a pillow. They were perfectly cooked and the rice went so well with it. The beef was also delicious and had great flavor but was a little tough. I didn't really love the sausage but I think it is just because it is a flavor that I wasn't accustomed to. The chia seed pudding was also very good but at the end of the day I didn't feel like it was special so I wouldn't order it again. I also got their coconut cakes and that was definitely a must try it was such a great palette cleanser after all the savory foods. read more

I was excited to try Tanzie's. The reviews were positive, and the menu looked intriguing. There was a wait, but it wasn't unreasonable, and the restaurant maintained a steady line of guests. Upon being seated, I was eager to explore the menu, and our server enthusiastically shared details about the dishes. We placed our drink order while reviewing our options. However, as time passed, I began noticing issues around me. Tables weren't being cleared promptly, creating delays in seating and service. While the menu explanations were thorough, they seemed to take precedence over actual service, causing unnecessary lags in order-taking. We waited so long that the host who seated us ultimately stepped in to take our order. They were incredibly gracious, but our main server appeared blithely unaware of the delay or the overall breakdown of our experience. Drinks were another issue. While other tables that arrived after us were served, ours had yet to come out. We had to flag down the person making espresso drinks, and while they quickly expedited our order, the drinks were incorrectly prepared. Mistakes happen, but our server neither acknowledged the error nor made any effort to rectify it. Again, it was the host--who was already juggling seating, waitlist management, and table follow-ups--who provided updates on our food. Throughout the wait, we received no proactive check-ins, which was especially frustrating since we hadn't even ordered small plates. As for the food, it was solid but lacked the meticulous attention to detail that could elevate the experience. My pork belly (Gaeng Hung Le) skillet had inconsistencies--some pieces were all fat, while others had a well-balanced ratio of rendered fat and meat. The dish was rich but could have used a touch more restraint to feel cohesive. My partner's Nam Prik Ong Skillet seemed enjoyable, particularly the sausage, though when I ordered a side of it, I found it overcooked and overly charred in some areas. Overall, the food was good, but the service was severely lacking. If the food had been exceptional, I might have been willing to overlook the service issues, but that wasn't the case. To our main server: less time should be spent making distasteful jokes about a guest's food assessment and more time ensuring quality service. Pros: unique, delicious, great service Cons: tiny space (gets crowded fast!) What a fantastic little gem of a restaurant. Tanzie's offers a unique perspective on Thai food by offering food styles from northern Thailand (as opposed to 99% of other Thai restaurants out there). This means savory, delicious spicy egg breakfasts and really interesting takes on traditional breakfast specials like omelettes. The food is beautifully presented and the service is attentive and caring. I've taken my parents here and they adored it. Pro tip - you must get there for breakfast before 930 am, preferably 9 am as the restaurant is tiny and fills up fast. Also - do us all a favor and don't bring groups larger than 4, that's just selfish lol. Highly recommended! read more

Tanzie is one of my go-to Thai brunch spots in Berkeley. I seriously love coming here. The lava eggs are a must. So fluffy, rich, and packed with flavor. The chicken sai oua is really good, but my absolute favorite is the nam prik ong. It's spicy but not overwhelming and pairs perfectly with the rice and eggs. Their Thai beignets are also delicious, though definitely on the sweeter side, so we skipped them this time. Highly recommend this place. Just make sure to come a little early to put your name down because it gets very busy on weekends. read more
