    General chicken

We got the dinner special for takeout and had high hopes because of the great reviews, but unfortunately we were disappointed. The general chicken was very chewy, the fried rice was overly heavy on the soy sauce, and the cheese puff and egg roll were not very good either. Lastly, this spot does not make in house hot mustard

Chicken and vegetables, lunch special with the egg roll , hot and sour soup and fried rice

I decided to try Tangs kitchen for a quick lunch, although it was typically after the lunch hours. They were not super busy, but the one waiter they had was really hustling which I appreciated. I ordered the hot and sour soup with the chicken and mixed vegetables lunch special, which came with the eggroll and fried rice . I enjoyed all of the flavors that are very typical of this dish and it was a good portion with me even taking a small box home for the next day. The Rice had a bit too much soy sauce. I would say in it this day and it was a bit salty for me, but other than that, the flavors were wonderful in both the hot and sour and the chicken dish.

My wife and I recently stumbled upon Tangs Kitchen, and we are so glad we did! Having visited this location prior to its current incarnation, I was genuinely impressed by the transformation. The new owners have created a vibrant atmosphere with their new decor, immediately giving the space a lively San Francisco Chinatown feel with its beautiful, rich red accents. The menu immediately caught our attention. The prices are incredibly family and student-friendly--a refreshing change compared to many other local Chinese establishments. We opted for the Dinner Combination for Two, which was a fantastic value and included the soup of the day, savory egg rolls, and delicious crab cheese puffs. For our entrees, I selected the Broccoli Beef, and my wife enjoyed the Orange Chicken. Both dishes were served fresh, hot, and savory with every single bite. Beyond the excellent food, the staff provided a professional and attentive environment that made the experience even more enjoyable. If you're looking for a local spot to enjoy a quiet, family-style meal with great food and great value, I highly recommend checking out Tangs Kitchen. It truly is a local gem!

Tang's Kitchen is a great local spot. Plenty of seating, flavorful food with generous portions, and reasonable prices. Everything tasted great, friendly service, and the decor was fun and welcoming. Would recommend.

3/23/25- In the area and wanted to try the new place- The value and portion sizes are very generous- Service is great and server very polite. Went with the crispy walnut chicken- Eggplant with garlic sauce and sweet and sour deluxe .. Flavors were good and food was hot.. I didn't realize the chicken dishes were battered and deep fried- -- I would have gotten one dish.. Nice quaint restaurant- Would come back if in the area..

So far so good. This is a new place in the same location where the other Chinese restaurant closed. It's nice inside. Service was great. Food was delicious. I had the closest thing to orange chicken that I could find on the lunch special menu...I ordered generals chicken with no spice. It WAS sweet enough for me even though I am good with REALLY sweet stuff. Some people do not like too much sweet...they would like this a lot. My friend ordered sweet & sour chicken. She said it was great but that she thought I got more...I'm sure there is more chicken in generals chicken because there are no veggies. I was kinda envious of her onion and pineapple. (:-) I posted pics of each so you can see the sweet and sour chicken sauce is regular red sauce. Generals chicken sauce is different. They are very generous with the fried rice. I was actually hungry but only could eat half my meal. I had the rest for dinner. I would probably rate the food 4 stars. I bumped to 5 stars because their lunch specials are very inexpensive compared to other restaurants. So they get an extra star for GREAT VALUE. If you find this review USEFUL please VOTE!

We weren't sure how things were going to turn out after Soochow closed. Happy to report that everything was excellent. They have revamped the dining room somewhat. New owners have many new and unique menu items more focused on Szechuan cuisine. The new chef plates everything beautifully, and we both enjoyed all the apps and entrées. Waitress was nice, checking in frequently to make sure everything was good. All of the fresh vegetables were cooked to perfection. They just need to get the plumbing thing fixed with the scent, and it's five stars. Almost like a ptrap problem, it was there when Soochow owned it as well.

My third visit. Time to review.

This was the second time I tried this restaurant since moving here from the Bay Area. Which of…read morecourse automatically makes me a Chinese food snob! It's been about 4 years since the last time, I tried the food here and since I was hosting about 10 people at my home, I wanted to serve something simple and cost effective. My goto for this is Chinese food. I ordered chicken chow mein and stir fried mixed vegetables. It came in two trays and enough from probably closer to 15 people. So portions were good but the total bill was between $120-$130 about what I've come to expect here in Reno. Let's just say, I've traveled to several countries in Asia and lived most of my life in Northern CA eating quite a bit of Chinese food. This doesn't make my an expert but it would be fair to say, I am quite familiar with what is considered mainstream traditional Chinese cooking. But let's get to the food, with the caveat that I realize that everyone's preferences can vary widely when it comes to food. So my opinion is based on what one would find in Hong Kong and San Francisco. The chicken chow mein had all the correct ingredients, long noodles that were slightly thicker than say spaghetti, had the correct amount of softness without being mushy. Chicken was presented in slices and appeared to be white meat, there was some white onions thrown in there for some texture and flavor. Normally when I order chow mein, it isn't served with a brown "gravy". Not that this dish was swimming in it, but think of spaghetti with tomato sauce. Replace the red with medium dark brown and you get the picture. Now my guests who are Reno locals, thought it was great and flavorful. I would agree with the flavor part but it was much too saucy for my tastes. Would I try Chin Chin again for noodles? I'm not sure but the owner did state, they can make dishes any way I like, so perhaps I'll order off menu next time. The stir fried mixed vegetables is where I was most disappointed. Let's start with the ingredients. All were sliced in 2-3 inch pieces, which included button mushrooms, zuchinni, bamboo shoots, brocolli, carrots, and onions. This dish could have passed for a savory vegetable stew. There was a lot of gravy, so much so, that it colored all the vegetables brown, except for the carrots. The sauce had a slight "twang" to it, almost vinegar or worchester-like. Not my thing, I could not taste the individual flavors of the vegetables because of how heavy the sauce was. The brocolli was over cooked where the flowerette parts were pale. I prefer my vegetables to be just cooked, almost snappy. I would not order this dish again. No comments on the restaurant itself as both times I tried it, was for take out. So bottomline, would I try Chin Chin again? Yes but I will be very specific on how I would like my order prepared. Maybe for their lunch special.

Traditional Vietnamese or Chinese cuisine IMO, is difficult to find here compared to the Bay Area. But that's not the fault of Reno, it's just the number of asian restaurants are so much fewer here and all the produce is literally imported. My goto when checking out a chinese restaurant is their chow fun noodles. Why? The noodles are perishable and if frozen the texture becomes a bit mushy, not firm. Was the noodle fresh, yes but with the cavet that it was probably imported day or two earlier. There are no local noodle makers in Reno. The dish was prepared in traditionally with a slight twist. Garlic, lots of minced garlic. Not complaining, as this is unusual for chow fun noodles to get amost a fourth of a garlic bulb worth. I ordered the mixed protein version with chicken, pork, and beef. There was a slight sweetness to the dish, which I am atributing it to sugar. Which again is unusual but a welcome addition like the garlic. My last visit was when some relatives visted from the Bay Area and we had lunch. I didn't want to take a chance on the food that they may not be used to, so we choose SK Noodle. Eveyone had their vietnamese Pho and grilled dishes and so far SK did dissapoint any of the Northern CA food snobs! I will be back.
