The fried chicken was easily a 10/10! Perfectly seasoned, crispy skin, and juicy, tender meat. The fried catfish was also amazing. Not overly oily, perfectly cooked, and honestly one of the best things we had. The baked beans were incredible too. So much flavor and nice and saucy. The ribs were a close second. Great flavor and they literally fell off the bone. A few sides missed the mark for me personally. The cornbread was super dry and looked and tasted almost like it had been dipped in the fryer. The rice and gravy was really under-seasoned and didn't have much flavor. And unfortunately, the mac and cheese was pretty underwhelming. It was very watery and lacked any flavor. This place came highly recommended from a friend and we were excited to try it as we are both from the south. The restaurant was clean and bright with a decent amount of seating. You can wait to be seated or order takeout from the counter. The servers and staff were extremely friendly and treated you like a good friend they have known for years. Of course we started our meal with sweet teas. The tea was perfect and transported you directly to the south with every sip. As an appetizer we had the fried green tomatoes. The tomatoes were lightly battered, seasoned beautifully, and fried to perfection. The sauce that was served with them complemented them perfectly. For our mains, I had the shrimp basket with red beans and rice and my husband had the catfish plate with Mac-n-cheese and collard greens. I also ordered a side piece of fried catfish and a basket of fried okra. The catfish and the shrimp were both coated in the same light batter as the tomatoes. Like the fried green tomatoes, both the catfish on the platter and the shrimp were perfectly seasoned and cooked beautifully. The tartar sauce was rich and rich and creamy with just the right amount of tartness. The Mac-n-cheese was well seasoned and delicious, however the cheese sauce was thicker than what we prefer. The collard greens were perfection! My husband absolutely loves collard greens and is extremely picky on them yet he could not get enough of these! The red beans and rice were delicious. I would say that the balance and ratio was a bit off as the rice disappeared due to the amount of "sauce" from the dish making the bowl more of a soup. M&M seems like they can get pretty busy and can get backed up quickly both out front and in the kitchen. The servers were told at one point to wait to put in orders for a bit (it was about 20 min before they were told they could resume) and my piece of fish and my okra came out after we finished our meal (it was almost like the kitchen forgot about it-even though we asked about it 2 times). If you are looking for authentic Southern Comfort Food, M&M's is the place for you. This is legit Louisiana cuisine. On this trip, they offered the Crawfish Etouffee as a special, coming highly recommended from all the staff, so I had to try it. The soup had a very thick, creamy texture, rich with flavor. The bits of crawfish were complemented with some grilled shrimp. All served with a dollop of rice. Delicious. My wife had the Fried Chicken Platter. The skin was crisp and full of flavor. I don't know what seasonings they put on the chicken but it was absolutely delicious. Now a risk with any fried chicken is over-cooking the chicken at the cost of getting the skin crispy. This was the case with our dish. While the outside was absolutely amazing, the chicken itself was a bit over cooked. What a shame. We ordered the Chicken Platter with a side of Red Beans and Rice. This was straight from the Bayou. Simple, delicious and perfect. Just wish I had a bigger serving. We also sampled the corn bread. I cannot explain just how spot on this place is for legit southern cooking and dining experience. You will wait for food, understand that goodness takes time. I've been here a few times but my 2 favorite experiences were today and several weeks back during Hot August Nights. Today, my son and I came in at like 2:30 (on a Tuesday). There were two people there for takeout and we were the only dine-in patrons. There was a theological discussion going on between one of the owners and 2 different patrons that lasted a good 30 minutes. At one point our waitress (I believe the owner's daughter) went outside to do a bible study. It felt like being back home in NC. The other top experience during HAN was simply seeing so many Black people in one place truly enjoying themselves. Every table was full and there was a long wait for take out. The collards are elite. Smothered pork chops, chicken fried steak, fried chicken... I haven't had anything mediocre. My 15yo son now wants them to cater his birthday party this December - which should be interesting given all his friends are rich white kids that play hockey and lacrosse. Foodies of Reno/Sparks, this is a great example of a good institution you need to protect and foster. It is rare to find something this legit that is this far out. Ordered a pickup order through DoorDash, and arrived at the time it was estimated it would be ready. The food was ready around 25 minutes late. We incorrectly assumed the drink we ordered was in the bag and that there would be condiments, but they missed the drink and the chicken tenders came with no sauce, and there was no ketchup for the fries. The meals were supposed to come with cornbread but we received what seemed to be lemon cake. The hush puppies were the best food item, greens second- the chicken was good but not great, fries were soggy, mac n cheese was good, and beans were too sweet and watery. This homey place is just perfect to scratch that itch for some good Southern Cooking. It's tucked in a corner of a strip center on Holman just off Pyramid Way. I was seated by the front door so I got like a front row seat for the activities. There are two small dining rooms and an order counter with a large screen TV so you can monitor the news of the day. There are lots of options on the menu. I settled for the bbq pork ribs accompanied by collard greens, Mac n Cheese and cornbread. I just had to try the fried catfish so I added a side of one piece. That catfish was so good just like being in Louisiana where it is hard fried crust with flaky white catfish inside...let's just say the cook "Nailed It!" It was perfection. Such a good meal. It is .4 mile from my house and I never knew about it. (:-0 It's located near the old Scolari's Food & Drug (which closed recently) and is tucked in the corner closest to Pyramid. I can WALK there, and when I'm hankering for mashed potatoes and country gravy that's what I'm going to do... to work off the calories which are WORTH IT! I was going to order mashed potatoes and gravy and coleslaw but my neighbor ordered chicken fried steak and a lightbulb went off in my head. That used to be a grand favorite of mine but I realized about 35 years ago that what I loved most was the potatoes and gravy so I stopped getting the whole meal. I haven't ordered it since. Until today. I'm not much of a meat person anyway and haven't missed it...but now that I'm home I realize that THIS CHICKEN FRIED STEAK is going to be missed! I literally kept eating my fabulous steak and not the potatoes...that is unheard of for me. The country gravy has large chunks of sausage, and is the most perfect gravy I can ever remember. I'm a bit of a GOOD COLESLAW addict. THIS COLESLAW IS MY PERFECT VERSION...light mayo based with the perfect hint of sweet but mostly tasting VERY FRESH as if they just whipped it up for me personally. The mashed potatoes are WAY better than I could make. REAL potatoes MASHED just enough to be mashed but letting me know they are REAL with a perfect amount of unmashed bits too. Thick and sturdy! The cornbread muffin topped with some honey made this a very comforting meal! The only problem I might have is ordering anything else...although I tasted one bite of my neighbors fried okra and WoW it was delicious. Before writing this review I read several other reviews. It sounds like I NEED to come back several times WITH FRIENDS and sample things they order (:-) because it sounds like everything here is delicious. I also just searched "what is a hush puppy" and DUH...basically a little fried ball of cornbread batter? If that's right I'm trying that next time. I may dream about them. (:-) I DID check out the sweet potato pie sitting in the case. They are home made good sized individual pies. I can visualize myself hoofing the .4 mile just for THAT and hoofing back the .4 mile VERY SATISFIED. I did speak with the owner. Apparently he and his wife and family have been satisfying hungry people for over 20 years...and 8 years in this location. I hope they never move! The owners granddaughter was our server. Her service was as sweet and helpful as she is beautiful. Which means VERY sweet and helpful. I know a lot of small restaurants are family owned and run but this place has an extra homey feel that makes me want to return SOONER...not just eventually. We got the pulled pork sandwich, side of collards, fried chicken dinner, and hushpuppies. 20 min wait for the fried chicken dinner, but worth it! Pulled pork was saucy and tender. I LOVE the collard greens! Hushpuppies were crispy but not greasy and just the right amount. Place is on the smaller side because they blocked off the extra seating area so definitely come here early because this place stays busy pretty consistently. We had people coming in for pickups and LARGE catering orders. So if that doesn't tell you how authentic and delicious their food is, then I don't know what can. A Beloved Local Staple With Room to Return to Its Prime This is one of the hardest reviews I've had to write--not because I don't love this place, but because I do. M&M Southern Food Café holds a special place in this community, and in my heart. It's been the soul food spot in town for as long as I can remember--Black-owned, locally operated, rooted in culture and consistency. In a city like ours, having an authentic soul food restaurant run by people of color is rare, and deeply meaningful to me. I've been eating here since around 2008, back when the experience was, in my opinion, unmatched. The food was incredible--easily some of the best soul food I've ever had. The prices were spectacular, the atmosphere was electric, and the customer service made you feel like family. Over the years, like everywhere else, prices have gone up. I don't fault them for that. But as those prices rose, it felt like the quality of their food dipped and the customer service was thrown out the window. While food costs understandably fluctuate, great service is something that doesn't depend on the market--it's something that can always stay at 100%. To be fair, their food trucks still absolutely deliver. Whenever I catch them at local events, everything--from flavor to energy to hospitality--is right on point. Honestly, if they could replicate that exact food truck magic inside the restaurant again, there's no question they'd be the top spot in Northern Nevada for soul food. One additional note: posted hours don't always line up with when they're actually open. There have been many occasions--probably about half the times I've stopped by--where the doors were closed despite the listed hours. Consistency in open times goes a long way for locals who want to support you regularly. At the end of the day, I still consider M&M's a staple and recommend them. We were greeted with a very friendly staff and service was as good as it should be. Food was....alright. it wasn't horrible, but it wasn't anything amazing. I was excited to try the alligator for the first time, but I couldn't really taste what I was eating because it was way too salty. Their ribs were really good though! It was not busy but we waited a good 30 minutes before we got our food. I ordered fried oysters. They tasted good but were so greasy you could have fried another plate full in grease left on the plate. My glass of tea was dirty. The red beans & rice was a boring & bland and warm. My girlfriend had the fried shrimp, flavorful but again the over abundance of grease was evident. Her coleslaw was very bland as well. The greens are delicious, the mac n cheese was the only meh part. You can tell there's American cheese in it, I'd love to try an all natural mac n cheese.
