Fried Okra, Fried Hushpuppies with Cornbread!
    Curtis D.

After hearing several locals rave about Caroline's Kitchen and Barbecue, my family and I finally decided to see if the hype was real. As soon as we walked in, the family-style seating made us feel right at home--which was a huge plus for our group, including three growing young men with serious appetites. Being a country boy with a deep appreciation for savory comfort food, I went straight for the Carolina Sampler Platter. For $17.99, the value is unbeatable: 3 wings, two ribs, a half portion of catfish, two homemade chicken strips, and a literal mountain of fries. I also couldn't resist adding the fried okra and hushpuppies to the table. The food was outstanding. The smoked ribs were succulent and fell right off the bone, and the cornmeal batter on the catfish was so crisp it reminded me of my Southern Louisiana grandmother's cooking. Having a variety of sauces--like the Moonshine, Spicy, and Hot and Honey--was the icing on the cake. I left with a full stomach and plenty of leftovers. If you're looking for authentic southern comfort, this is a local gem you can't miss!

Pulled Pork Sandwich with tots, chip, and coleslaw. Fried Catfish with collards, krinkle fries, and cornbread

We have been to Carolina bbq on so many occasions I can't even keep track. Recently tried the fried catfish as well as the pulled pork sandwich. Everything is made to order, so there is a little bit of a wait, but food is brought right out to you. Fish was light and crispy served with tartar sauce. You get to choose what type of sauce you want for the sandwich. There are no bad choices here when it comes to sauces! For the sides, recommend the collards and the tater tots.

If you're into real, smoky barbecue with that classic vinegar-based kick, Carolina Barbeque absolutely delivers. The meats were cooked right and had that deep, smoky flavor. The dining area is spacious and comfortable, which makes it easy to enjoy your meal without feeling cramped. The staff was genuinely nice and helpful. If you appreciate tangy, vinegar-forward sauces and solid barbecue done the right way, Carolina Barbeque is definitely worth checking out!

Ribs , chili and tater salad!!

Hadn't been here in a while but I always remember really liking their ribs and they did not disappoint. Best ribs in Reno/ Sparks, so good that BBQ sauce is totally unnecessary , the dry rub and beautiful smoke ring are sooo tasty!! We had two sides chili and potato salad , chili was tasty, potato salad was a little sweet for my taste but not bad. Service was very good, nice folks down there, not much in the way of atmosphere but i kind of like the simplicity because it reminds me of my youth when most restaurants didn't have 10 tvs in them and you were going there to eat, not to be entertained . In conclusion , i'm giving 5 stars for Carolina as a killer ribs destination, their sausages are also really good , none of the other BBQ joints in the area can touch these ribs , so if you love ribs ..... this is the spot!! Cheers!!

Carolina sampler. This was so so good. I got 3 meals from it

Another amazing trip. We have only eaten the catfish and brisket. On this trip, hubby ordered his usual of fried catfish with fried okra and potato salad. I opted to try the Carolina sampler. It had 1/2 a catfish filet 2 smoked ribs (OMG fall off the bone tender) 3 dry rubbed fried chicken wings (crispy and delicious) 2 huge hand breaded chicken tenders (They are amazing) I opted for potato salad instead of the French fries. Staff here are wonderful, it's always packed with customers. We literally had to park at the end of the street that it's located on as they were so busy. The food comes out hot and fresh and plentiful. GoGetYouSome

So we heard about this place and wanted to try it out glad we did. The parking lot is little small. Slowly starting to warm. But the food is so big! It's kinda like a dinning hall. You order at the window and they bring it out to you. They have sodas and beer and wine in cans. The food was so delicious you can taste the in the meats and the beans and coleslaw is so yummy. We will definitely be back. Highly recommend this place. Cheers

Favorite lunch spot in Sparks. Always great service and awesome food! Old school southern bbq vibe.

The Korean. This is one BIG ass, #sirmixalotapproved sandwich!

Consistently one of the best chicken sandwiches in Reno! I usually get the Korean and it's 1000% Tots are good, but the old barrel style were a gift from the heavens. I know it's the same seasoning, the old ones just hit better. Staff is always great, dining room is cleaned often. We have always left here very, very happy after a team lunch.

Amazing. Those were some competition ribs, dry rub was perfect and they were bite off the bone ribs. No tough ribs or gristle. Beans were tasty and had pieces of meat in there with a nice kick. Coleslaw was perfection. Cornbread was excellent southern style with a little bit of sugar but not super sweet. Outstanding overall and truly hands down best bbq in Washoe County. Can't wait to go back

Issa no for me. Let's begin Catfish looks amaze balls and had the perrrrrfect crunch right! Fish was not fresh! Nor was it seasoned! Now it looks seasoned lol yes, but there was zero amount of salt on this fishy fish The rib. Smoked so that's an automatic no for me. It's like there's only smoked here. Adding the sauce made this A LOT BETTER The collards were tolerable. Super duper soft and the flavor was just tolerable The baked beans were disgusting. They tasted like they were seasoned with ketchup and vinegar. Highly upset about that one. Like I threw that completely away Peach cobbler has a lot of dough. Maybe look into adding nutmeg and cinnamon like typical peach cobbler has? Maybe?

    Evan S.

We had a combo and the Dixie dog. Dixie dog is a hot link with brisket and slaw. My wife had fried catfish and pulled pork. The mac was bland... always a bummer. Always fast and friendly service here from a good crew. We arrived with only a few other tables eating and it shortly filled up. Whenever I'm in the area here for lunch it competes with the other great spots nearby. Thanks Carolina Kitchen!

    Old thick mac and cheese

This place is renowned for its brisket. I have tried it when family members brought it home. I went in for the first time today. The lady got my brisket conbo right, but she messed up my side order of mac and cheese. The wait was short. I got home, and the mac and cheese was not the size I ordered. I ended up with a smaller size of old mac and cheese. It tasted really bad. None of my family liked it, and we couldnt even stomach one bite.

Oh gosh, savory and crispy fish and chips!

Ask the Community - Carolina Kitchen & Barbeque

Someone mentioned they use tallow to fry their wings, is this true?! If so, wonderful!

Do they have the chicken wing nachos?

Yes, they do. My son says they're great!

Does the restaurant also sell the loaded fries and loaded Mac & cheese like the food truck?

I'm not sure but I would think so , hope this helps 🙂

Is the restaurant still taking to-go or pick-up orders?

As far as I know yes , they are taking orders for curbside pick-up

    Do they not have crawfish?

I have never seen it on the menu

The chopped pork and brisket were okay, but we thought a lot of the flavor was carried from the BBQ sauce instead of the meat. My only critique involves another server who seemed very chatty with a couple who sat next to our table. She was talking with them a lot. She also made a comment after she noticed me taking photos of the inside saying "you can easily spot out the first timers." I think that's something a server should keep to themselves instead of mentioning it out loud. But that's me. I would've given this review 3.5 stars if I could just for that. But I'm giving it 4 because everything else was excellent. Would definitely come back again.

Yes, the brisket was actually INEDIBLE! It was dry, tough, rubbery, tasteless. The only way I could even power a couple of bites down was soaking it in the BBQ sauce. At least the chicken I had with it was moist and had SOME flavor. I had the grits and cheddar as one side and it's like they put them in a food processor. Grits should be gritty, not smooth like paste ( I promise I don't eat paste). The Costco applesauce was the best thing I had. We literally had to go out to lunch again. Our service was blah but at we were only charged for one meal. Not sure who finds this place acceptable, but I shall never return. Dammit! JimG

I don't know what seasonings they put on the chicken but it was absolutely delicious. Now a risk with any fried chicken is over-cooking the chicken at the cost of getting the skin crispy. This was the case with our dish. While the outside was absolutely amazing, the chicken itself was a bit over cooked. What a shame. We ordered the Chicken Platter with a side of Red Beans and Rice. One thing we noticed right away was that the bonchon was already set on the tables before guests arrived. It wasn't a large spread--just a small tin of cheese corn and a divided tray with kimchi, bean sprouts, and fish cake--not sure how long they were left out and did look and taste dry. The servers seemed to work well together. Different team members checked on us, cleared dishes, served food, and helped other's tables. Once it got busier, they also used robot servers to help deliver food. We started with the salad with house dressing and the popcorn chicken. Both were good, and the chicken was nice and moist. For the BBQ, we ordered the Chardol, Ju Mul Luck, Hawaiian Steak, Tri-Tip Bulgogi, and Galbi (short ribs). Having eaten at quite a few Korean BBQ restaurants in Las Vegas, we noticed the portions here were a bit smaller. They also limit each round to three appetizers and four meat selections. Overall, the service was good, and we especially appreciated Eurie for being friendly and attentive. The only thing that concerned us was when another server changed our grill. Instead of lightly drizzling oil onto the grill, she forcefully squeezed the bottle, causing the oil to shoot out onto grill. It seemed like an unnecessary safety risk for both guests and employees. Our favorites were definitely the Tri-Tip Bulgogi and the Galbi. Both were flavorful and tender. The Chardol was good, but the slices were very thin and the portion felt a little small. The restaurant filled up quickly between 5:00 and 6:00 p.m., so it's clearly a popular spot. Overall, we enjoyed our meal and would come back for the Tri-Tip Bulgogi, Galbi, and the teamwork displayed by the staff.

As someone who occasionally likes to eat alone, I really appreciate that. I've visited several times over the years, including recently under the newer ownership. Unfortunately, some of my old favorites aren't quite the same. I used to love their deep-fried oysters, which are no longer on the menu and have been replaced with deep-fried mussels. The kimchi stew recipe also seems to have changed and wasn't as memorable as before. That said, they still serve my favorite gopchang (beef small intestine). When cooked properly, it gets wonderfully crispy and reminds me of Mexican tripas tacos--definitely worth ordering. I'd personally skip the bibimbap appetizer. The rice was hard, the ground beef was cold, and it felt like it relied too heavily on the gochujang sauce for flavor. Even with those changes, I'll continue supporting this business. Service was also attentive.

Each plate came with a choice of soup: hot and sour or egg drop soup, a large helping of rice and a super delicious egg roll. I will be returning to this place for future family meals. The atmosphere is very nice and easy-going. It has a traditional Chinese restaurant feel and the food the customer service and everyone involved are exceptional. Thank you Tangs Kitchen. If you are looking for some excellent Chinese cuisine visit Tang's Kitchen, you won't be disappointed.
