Date-marking and disposition: Foods that are time/temperature-controlled for safety in the walk-in cooler had no date mark, including cream cheese, cooked noodles, cooked tempura shrimp and chopped cabbage. Foods that are time/temperature-controlled for safety held for more than 24 hours must be date-marked and must be consumed or discarded within seven days to control pathogenic bacterial growth. We visited early last Tuesday evening. Everything was fresh & delicious. There portions were extremely large so a good value for what we got. The cream cheese wontons & egg drop soup were easily the best I've ever had. The egg foo young was fabulous. We're anxious to return to try more off their menu. Haven't been here in years. However, I noticed on Google Maps that the reviews were looking up. I was so beyond happy to see that it had improved in rating since the last time I was here. We ordered takeout. We got the Dinner Combination plates which come with soup or salad, egg roll, won tons, choice of rice, and choice of a main course. We choose three Combination dinners. They were sweet & sour pork, chicken chow mein, and mild General Chicken with fried rice. We also had an order of lettuce-wrapped chicken. Then we just shared it all. I have never had sweet and sour pork without veggies before. I would have liked to see some onion or bell pepper. However, the flavor was really good. The general chicken, and chow mein were both tasty. Of course, my favorite was the lettuce wraps with hoisin sauce. I think they make the best lettuce wraps in town. We will definitely be back. The food was not quite what we remember when it was at its top. But it has come up in rank. This restaurant deserves a second chance. So if you are like me and used to love this place. Service was better this time around and will say it has improved in the past few years. Dined in 2/14/23, I met my hubby for a quick lunch and I was craving a spicy General's chicken or Mongolian beef. This place does it right! Ambience is a bit dated, but I think it's part of this restaurants charm. They offer sushi too and that's a plus for our older kids because they won't eat Chinese with us when we come in. Dim Sum and boba is also available, but select days and times and quantity was an issue we came across last visit. Do check out their lunch specials if you're dining during the week. Great little and pretty traditionally decorated Chinese restaurant in Sparks in the Smith's shopping center on Baring Boulevard. It's been there for many, many years. I'm glad I was able to meet friends there for lunch. I hadn't been there in years. The wait gals were extremely kind and friendly. We went on a weekday during the Reed High School lunchtime, but we still got wonderful service. I think all of the student orders were to, so they did not take up any of the tables. They have a lunch menu full of special combinations and plates! Great prices too! I ordered the walnut shrimp lunch plate. It came with super salad, an egg roll and rice. I loved it. It was full of great flavor and well prepared. Shrimp were sizable and the sauce was delicious. My friends love their dishes too! It was nice and quiet at our booth and an easy place to have conversations. I'm sure we'll be back as it is perfectly located for all of us to meet. I'd give it a 3.5 We came in for lunch on a Sunday and decided to try this place since I've been wanting to try the dim sum at The Spot (within same location). We decided trying the restaurant and got two dinner combos . My husband got the salad and I got egg drop soup. Midway through , he bit into a hard plastic piece found in his salad , we mentioned to the server and humbly apologized . My chicken broccoli came out and looked delicious , the veggies were cooked nicely and I had the option to get it with white or brown sauce. I don't usually like salty items so I chose the lighter sauce which was yummy . He ordered the walnut shrimp combo and tasted good as well but lacked the crispness I'm more accustomed to with this dish. Our server recommended the dim sum (9,95 for 6 pieces) but was not my favorite - seemed like it was frozen and not as fresh as I expected. The service was good as she always checked on us and was very nice and friendly. The ambiance was ok but I think a bit of background music could liven up the place . Such a hidden gem, who tried hard in service, great quality and a house made style. All of this makes up for being hard to find and an decorations that traditional. The food is great! Highlighting the pot stickers: fresh filling, house made dough; make these a stand out. They come out hot, and sort of CRISPY (which does not take away from the chewyness; that little crunch make these amazing! I could've eaten 20! The sushi was good grade, and lots of choice for hand and long rolls. Also, the Glazed Walnut Shrimp was soooo good; made to order and you could tell. Loved to constant checking by the wait staff. First when I went in no one was there to help me for five minutes so I got the guy at the sushi counter. That lost them a star right off the bat. Then I ordered Mr. Lee's Revenge which is Crystal shrimp, cream cheese, cilantro, avocado, spicy crab and orange sauce on top. That was very good. I also got Selena's chip- no rice, seaweed chips which Crystal shrimp, red snapper and seared tuna sauce. That was very good too. I got some hot oolong tea which was very nice as I was a bit cold. I finished with the 101 which is banana cream cheese, tempura shrimp, topped with salmon, lemon, avocado, and unagi sauce. I really loved that. I was very happy but then came the worst part. I had to go to the bathroom. I can let go that the toilet seats are very worn. This has been a tough time for businesses which adds to my anxiety leaving this review. It was dirty in there though. I really wish I had not gone in there and could have left four stars but that bathroom was gross and I am a germophobe in the bathroom. Obvious evidence is something I can't handle. read more

I'm new to Sparks and still finding my way around, looking for different places to eat, hopefully finding a new future go-to spot. I reviewed another Chinese/Sushi restaurant for a similar noodle dish, as I gauge most Chinese restaurants by this single offering. Chow fun is my benchmark dish. Why? Noodles are very perishable and unlike rice that is made several times a day, noodles are either fresh or not. I saw that Shanghai offered chow fun so I thought great! I didn't read that this restaurant serves their chow fun "sup chow" meaning with gravy. Had I known, I would have asked if they could serve it "gwon chow" meaning dry fried style. Ordering it this way it is much more difficult for a restaurant to mask poor quality ingredients with a gravy sauce. Well, I got what I got so onto the review. The serving portion was good. About 90% portion sized compared to what I am used to in the San Francisco area. The noodles were cooked great, not too soft, not too hard. The chicken was tender as was the broccoli. Not over cooked. The sauce which was mainly soy sauce and perhaps some broth for moisture was too salty. Maybe I'm used to less salted foods but this was too much for me. I had to drink some hot tea to finish this meal. The wonton soup was better, flavorful, the ingredients and the pork wonton were cooked just right. Which is important especially if a soup has been simmering for some time. Would I return? Probably as there are other dishes to try and see how they do. read more

Their customer service is the worst. I had a mistake happen with a GrubHub order and wasn't sure who it contact so before calling GrubHub I called Shanghai. The woman I got on the phone was awfully rude and nasty. I wish I got her name but I couldn't stand talking to her. I had to go as far as telling her that she needs to work on customer service skills. I don't want to eat there just to avoid dealing with that type of service. Hope they see this and work on how they talk to people who need help. read more

Annie is the best server ever. We love the general Tao's: kung pow; and orange chicken. Fried rice is great too. Broccoli beef was cooked perfectly. Shanghai Restaurant used to have the best Crispy duck in town. The last three times I ordered it I was greatly disappointed. It wasn't crispy and it tasted old, like it had been sitting under a heat lamp for quite awhile. The flavor is not the same either. Very disappointing. I am a long time customer, approximately 25 years and we used to love eating here. However, the last few years we have gone less and less as the quality of food has gone down hill. Last night I walked in and gave my name to pick up my order. The girl said it wasn't ready, I paid and let her know I would be standing out front if she could please let me know when my order is ready. After much time had passed, I walked back in to check on our order. The girl again asked my name and then gave me my order which was sitting on the counter. Was it so hard to open the door and ask for my name or hand me my order? It's not like she was busy, no one was in the restaurant. Needless to say, our dinner was cold when I got it home. One of our favorite dishes is their Crispy Beef, sadly, the last few years the meat has been stringy, chewy and dried out. Last night we avoided our favorite dish and ordered the Generals Chicken and Sesame Chicken. Turns out the chicken is also just as dried out and stringy. Both sauces tasted so similar of vinegar that it was hard to notice the difference between the two dishes, the chicken was only half covered in sauce leaving much of the dish to be just a deep fried pieces of chicken. The sesame chicken is supposed to be lightly fried, thus was not the case. The fried rice still showed a bunch of white rice. This is not a cheap place to order from and we ended up throwing away almost all of it. Unless something changes this will be our last time. read more
