We decided to try something new today. Fried Chicken and waffles and Kids Hamburger Steak. The fried chicken are small pieces, prob the same as their crispy shoyu chicken with four fat mini waffles with powdered sugar sprinkled all over. The chicken is super crispy with a great crunch, albeit a few pieces maybe over cooked a bit as they were dry inside. The waffles were fluffy and great dipped in the syrup. The hamburger steak was a big and fat patty. We asked for gravy all over and son son loved it. Some of our other favorites are the Fried rice omelet with pork adobo, oyakodon, and our almost always usual the crispy spicy shoyu chicken. The servers are always polite and friendly, sort of reminds me of aunties. We'll definitely be back for more meals here.
Service is excellent with our exceptional (Hawaiian) waitress. She was very attentive. My teapot was not empty of hot water. Weather has been chilly and cold! The saimin broth was tasty and comforting with five huge wontons, two fish cakes, nori, and big handful of noodles. It helped warm me along with the green tea. The vegetable tempura went great with Chinese mustard and shoyu. I was in heaven!!! The atmosphere was bustling with business with family and friends enjoying their meals in their own deep conversations...good company and food, great combination! Ciao!!!!
This restaurant has been here for a very long time serving local Japanese and Hawaiian food. It's a big restaurant and must try! Good portions and good quality of food. I had the oxtail ramen and wuntun. Soup was flavorful and wuntun was chunky. My partner also enjoyed his koreamoco plate. Good food for good price. I'll be back to try out other menu items. There are so many options!
We went there for dinner and I ordered the special soup & sandwich which was Clam chowder & crab sandwich. The waitress asked if I wanted the clam chowder to come out with my wife's won ton Min, because the crab sandwich will take 15 mins to be served. Which was okay to get the clam chowder soup before the sandwich. The clam chowder soup came out it was just warm and no clams or flavor of clam, I had better clam chowder from the can, but I let the waitress no that the clam chowder wasn't hot, she was very nice and took it back to heat it up. Then she returned after reheating the clam chowder and a little while after brought the carb sandwich, the clam chowder was better on temperature, but the crab sandwich was cold in the center which the top was baked and hardly tasty on French bread slices, decided to not eat it and ordered the old faithful Saimin which I enjoyed. Thank you to the waitress who was very friendly and helpful. Restroom were clean and dinning area well kept. My wife ordered the won ton min which she mentioned it was not the same taste as before, and was disappointed with the flavor.
I was out here helping my parents and I wanted to go somewhere for dinner that was low key, since I was eating alone, which I like. I decided on Tanaka's because the parking is easy. The hostess was friendly and gave me a booth in the front. My server was great too! He said they had the best custard pie so of course I did that for dessert. I came here three times. I had to have the sizzling steak because it smelled so good when it came out to another table. Poured shoyu and worsteshire on it while it was sizzling. The second time, I had the Tanaka saimin. Came with a fried shrimp, teriyaki beef, and potato mac...sooo ONOOOO! On my third night, I had the combo teribeef and shrimp with fried noodles. I also had a side of potato mac, which my server forgot. I don't think she liked her job that evening...LOL! Someone else also refilled my drink. Oh, I also got the custard pie, which has a mac nut crust. Sooooo good! I had to have the fresh cherry, the owner pits the cherries himself, pie! Delicious! I also had the banana cream too! But if he's made the peanut butter chocolate pie, GET IT! It is sooooooo ONOOO! I love coming here. Lots of friendly locals, no frills, just good homestyle cooking! Mahalo Tanaka!
Nostalgia. That is what I would use to describe Tanaka Saimin. Granted I grew up eating at Dillingham Saimin (formerly called Boulevard Saimin as I remember it) every Sunday with my dad and brother. And although Dillingham has been closed for a while now, Tanaka more than keeps those nostalgic flavors alive today! We've been here a handful time since our move back to the island and it's always a pleasant experience. Service has always been great even on busy nights. The dining space is pretty spacious having a lot of tables. Chatter fills the restaurant but it isn't loud in the slightest. When it comes to their food; we are never disappointed. I won't describe any particular visit, but more so what we've ordered so far! My wife usually likes to order the Korea Moco and for good reason. Their kalbi short ribs are tender and packed with flavor and dipping it in that shoyu sesame dipping sauce elevates it. The fried mandoo also adds a nice crunchy texture to complete the plate. If you're indecisive like me, then the Tanaka Mixed Plate is always a great option. I always enjoy their hamburger steak because their brown gravy brings that nostalgic factor. Their shrimp tempura also tastes just as how I remember it. It is slightly batter heavy but to be honest, that's how I like theirs. Lastly their saimin is their staple and the light yet flavorful broth brings comfort for all Saimin lovers. It's no surprise that Tanka Saimin is always packed. Their service is great from what we experienced so far and their food never disappoints. Whenever we have visitors from the mainland, we usually take them here and they also enjoy the food. Since Tanaka Saimin moved to the Nimitz location, they serve more dishes than just Saimin, burgers, mushroom tempura and beef sticks. I like it that they offer a variety of dishes to please the palate of many diners. It's a family restaurant with a lot of tables! We usually come after work on a Friday and place can get pretty packed with customers shortly afterwards. I love the crispy shoyu chicken! It's deep fried dipped in shoyu based with a more chili than sweet chili sauce. I like it and the chicken reminds of the dipped chicken I've once made decades ago. Little different from garlic or Korean chicken. They have a variety of sides that you can choose from such as rice, mashed potatoes, fried noodles, & toss greens. I usually take mashed potatoes and fried saimin. Some may like Korea Moco (like a local moco but with Kalbi ribs on Kim chee rice and crispy wun ton) or Hearty Man (Pork chops, crispy shoyu chicken, spam and rice) . Some friends like the oxtail soup which I also liked. Mondays, their baked stuffed chicken was different and yummy. It was stuffed with shiitake mushrooms, spinach, Mac nuts and topped with mushroom gravy. I rarely come on a Tuesdays, but they give Senior discount! Weekends have brunch specials and even Japanese breakfast! Lately we have been having their Friday Hawaiian plate special! It's really good. All housemade except the poi and lomi salmon. I'm not a Hawaiian food lover, but I do love their Hawaiian plate! Their Lau Lau wasn't dry. It's tasty and they use beef short ribs in their Lau Lau. The Haupia was so creamy and delicious. It also comes with pickled onions, chicken long rice, Kalua pig, lomi salmon, poi or rice. It's even better to add the beef stew for few more dollars. It's one of the better beef stew! It tasted like the stew mom used to make. It's not too tomato based stew. Meat was tender. I really like their affordable desserts too! They have those dessert squares with cookie crust! Homemade pies! Not many places make them anymore! If you come on a Saturdays, they have Dinosaur bone (ham shank with cabbage) special! That's one I would get if I dine in on Saturdays! I did tried their prime rib and sizzling steak platter! They have more variety than Zippy's and I'm sure you can find something to eat. Of course some dishes are okay but they are some dishes I come here for. Nice casual place! Not many Family type restaurants around and you receive great service from waiters and waitresses! They are all nice and personable! Tanaka Saimin have more than Saimin!
I was here last in 2012, 14 years ago. I ordered a plate lunch which I didn't like. Of course a friend said it's called Tanaka Saimin. Anyways, I went last week and totally enjoyed my Tanaka Saimin! The broth was delicious and had the taste of my childhood, deep in Unami! For reals. Wow my new go to place for Saimin. To hurry things up since there was a line, I asked to be seated at the counter. We were sat immediately. Anyways I'd like to also try the plate lunches again, and a couple next to use ordered breakfast and it looked good!
Walked into Tanaka Saimin on a whim on a busy Friday night and was immediately impressed. Even though they were packed, we were offered counter seating right away as soon as we stepped inside. The service is what truly stands out. Management and every single server were incredibly attentive. The vibe felt homey and comforting -- almost like eating at a family gathering. Servers were calling regulars by name and chatting about personal updates at different tables, and it felt genuine, not forced. You can tell they've built real relationships with their customers. Food came out extremely fast, hot, and delicious with generous portions. Alina, our server, was especially kind and sweet, offering thoughtful recommendations and checking in consistently. We'll definitely be back -- especially to try the dessert they kept encouraging us not to miss.
Basic ramen and meat restaurant. Good for a simple lunch if you want over-sauced meats or bland noodles and vegetables. They definitely have a busy lunch service that seemed to attract mostly local seniors. Perfect for that kind of pallet. A bit loud but no more than any busy diner. Waitress was friendly and accomodating to our 5 credit card bill. Kept my coffee and water full. What else could I need?
This is a local favorite. Friday's start the PRIME RIB special and they run out before the night is through often. I got there at 7pm and they had some left. I got the king cut. It was smaller than visits prior and a big cut of fat was left on the king cut that couldn't be eaten but fat is part of the deal when eating prime rib. The flavor was still delicious. My wife selected the miso butterfish and was very happy she did. Service is always with a smile and Crystal is a peach. She's always smiling and makes you feel welcomed. My wife and I appreciate the ambiance as it's a reminder of days gone by. It's not outdated, it's diner style or like FLAMINGO's which is timeless in a way.
We love coming here. They are open until 10pm and the prices are reasonable with lots of choices, not just saimin. Although on a rainy day, their saimin really hits the spot! The servers are always fun and friendly. The ambiance is more of a local diner with great local food options. My favorite is the miso butterfish. They also serve a short ribs loco moco with regular or fried rice. Their desserts are Ono with one of our favorites being the lilikoi dessert. We will be back since this is one of our family's late dinner places to eat.
Hubs was home early on a Monday and wanted to get something for lunch. We also had to go to one of those nearby hardware store, so It just made sense to kill 2 birds with one stone. Hubs ordered the stew and french fries and got really excited to see someone else's order of onion rings, which were huge I mean HUGE!! I actually saw the customer cut it into smaller pieces because it was so huge. I decided on the daily special, which was a prime rib sandwich and the soup of the day, french onion soup. I have never tasted a french onion soup like that before, it was light and the broth wasn't dark and there were croutons and cheese on the top. Hubs and I were trying to breakdown what was in the soup, my first thought: chicken broth and maybe miso. Again, it was good, just not what I expected. The sandwich came with potato chips which was a nice addition to the soup and prime rib. Service was great, water was topped off and food was delicious. Only 4 stars because of the pricing. My soup and sandwich was $16, Hubs Stew was $16 but add on a drink and some fries and that was an extra $9, add a tip and it's easily $50. I guess that's how they keep the food prices lower, by upping the price of soda and fries, but it was a sticker shock for me. read more
I've been to Tanaka Saimin a few times now and so far I have not been disappointed. The food is tasty and portions are big. On this most recent visit, my son had the Korea Moco and I ordered the Sizzling Rib Steak. So darn delicious!! My steak also came with fried noodles and a salad (you can choose any 2 sides) and I had enough leftovers for my lunch the next day. Service was great and food came out quick even though they were busy. It's very laid back and not noisy, and they don't make you feel rushed to eat and leave. read more

First time here and came for breakfast. Had the cornedbeef hash which was delish. The coffee was really good and the server kept it coming! It looks like the establishment has been around for decades. From the decor to the tables, everything is dated. The food and service was great. I will definitely come back again. read more

Relative wanted to eat here for the first time, he has gone to the old Boulevard Saimin (there was a split from Boulevard Saimin to Tanaka Saimin and Dillingham Saimin, though Dillingham Saimin closed its doors due to financial loss during the pandemic) maybe the last time there was over 20 years ago. I have eaten here at Tanaka Saimin once before about 2015ish? We walked in just about 10:55 am (February 22nd) with three retired couples ahead of us. The nice older female host decides to say what today's specials to us together as a group. We were given a booth way towards the back which was nice as I did not realize how big(ger) it was compared to the time I came years ago. Got the Saimin (small) and Hamburger deluxe combo for $15.00 for early lunch today. Kept telling myself I never knew 'this was a thing' until I kept hearing) in local food Facebook forums) about how people pair saimin/won ton min with a hamburger/cheeseburger. Thus it was my first time to combine these two items. Saimin - appearance wise, it looked striking but ahh, nothing special about it, not the noodles, not the broth though my relative said the broth was 'salty'. Everywhere I have saimin, if I like it, I will sip the soup until the bowl is practically empty. Both my relative and I left a lot of the soup remaining. Bland broth... I mean it sorry to say... Hamburger sandwich - was surprisingly tasty (even though its appearance was on the bland side with its iceberg lettuce), buns were right sized (not like the slider sized hamburger buns you buy at the supermarket) and soft enough that it broke apart while eating my juicy hamburger. Perhaps they steam their buns? But yes, I see they are grilled. The only real negative? While we were ordering our meals off the menu, she asked me if I needed cheese or sauce for my hamburger... I said, ahh how about teriyaki sauce? Asked her if there is a charge? Few moments later, she comes back and says it's "$1.75". "$1.75"??? I laughingly told her 'ahh no thanks'. Geez, $1.75... I hope then it would be a half to a full cup of teriyaki sauce if I did order that! Glad I didn't need a cheese slice as garans-ball-barans it would have cost even more than the price for the teriyaki sauce! Wow. Our waitress though nice, never mentioned her name but only saw it on the bill (Patricia). This is the old school of waitressing (local style) as the waitresses don't say who they are... just would be nice though if they did introduce themselves before handing us our menus wouldn't you think? The crowd around the 11am hour seemed to be more our age, elderly (lol). There was no rush to have us leave our booth, so we stayed about 15 minutes more after finishing our meal. I was wondering if we had to pay somewhere up front, but when our waitress came to give us our bill she said just to pay her (no need to leave our booth). Funny this place, as though it is called 'Tanaka Saimin', their saimin needs some work as the other dishes seem (IMHO) to carry the load for this place to be successful. They may have to change their name to just 'Tanaka's' or 'Tanaka's Diner' (deleting the 'Saimin') as their saimin version just didn't do it for us... Sad... read more

So the weirdest thing happened here before we even got our table. Jamie W. and I took a long local bus ride from Waikiki to come here because frankly it was hard to find places close to the tourist areas that specialize in saimin. This cavernous place looked popular among the locals with the attitude to match. I looked at a vacant spot on a bench, and this senior woman snapped, "You're too heavy to sit here!" I simply thanked her for her observation and sat down. This apparently upset her, and she used her back to try to shove me off. It was like a WWF match, and she had a 100 pounds on me. When they finally called our name, I thanked her again and told her she should consider therapy to deal with her anger management issues. We were then led to a big booth and served by a lovely server named Pi'ikea. She made the rest of our experience most pleasant. The menu was more than saimin and included local grindz, burgers, and breakfast plates. Jamie ordered the $13.50 Oyako Saimin which featured chicken, egg, onion, and kamaboko (photo: https://yelp.to/PZD7EcLa7j). Very much in the comfort food category, it was presented like oyakodon but with saimin noodles instead of rice. It hit the spot for Jamie, but I was suffering PTS from the bench incident. I decided on the $23.50 Oxtail Saimin with Wun Tun (photo). It was quite a feast of meat and not disappointing on that front. The noodles were a bit too soft for me, especially compared to the saimin at Shige's (review: https://yelp.to/rljyeRp1rl). If you're into portions and don't mind paying a bit more, this might be well worth the bus ride over here. And if you run into that woman who shoved me, tell her I love her. I got the kimchi saimin while my bf got the saimin special which came with some mac salad, "tempura" and beef on the side. The saimin was very okay, I felt the kimchi wasn't quite authentic but that's okay. The wontons had little meat in it compared to Palace Saimin. My bf's tempura was very sad :( it was soggy and cold. The beef was also cold. We both didn't feel too satisfied after our meal. Service was however very friendly and we saw a lot of people waiting to dine in. read more

Have not ate here in a long time! Recently had a couple items that I thought were good! The crispy shoyu chicken was perfect! Seasoned well and fried perfectly, it paired well with the fried noodles and Mac salad! Amazing option! Second... The beef stew! The closest to homemade I've found though it's mostly gravy and vegetables. Mine had two little pieces of meat. Overall still good but not a good selection of meat and veggies. The ratio was off. I had Tanaka Saimin for $16.95 and it was great. A good size saimin bowl with so many wonton dumplings and side dishes of teri beef slices, shrimp tempura, and mac-potato were enough to get me full and satisfied, so tasty. The servers were great also. read more
Favorite dish here is the oxtail saimin. The broth is comforting and the mushroom slices had an earthy taste. The soup is served with a giant portion of minced ginger. Hot mustard is also available. The oxtail chunks are gigantic and tender. Auntie likes the crabmeat sandwich here-however the chips that came with it were stale today unfortunately. The place can be packed during peak hours so just be aware there may be a wait. read more

I love Tanaka Saimin! It is a place myself, friends and family enjoy! Their menu offers such a good variety of food from Prime Rib, Chicken, Pork, Fish yup whatever your craving they got something to satisfy it!! The Saimin is a winner! We love French Fries from Tanaka Saimin too Hot Mustard and ketchup mixed together makes it so yummy!!! I personally love the Oxtail Soup! The service is always good!! Staff is friendly and always smiling! There is parking but it can get busy. Definitely would recommend!! My fat cells ALWAYS do the happy dance after eating at Tanaka Saimin!!! read more

My gal pals & I decided to eat here after spending time together at the Trade Show on a Sunday afternoon. We lucked out in a parking space right in front and altho it was packed, we didn't have to wait that long for a table for the three of us. We each ordered something different: Mushroom burger with fries - the burger was a nice size with lettuce, tomato, onions and a pickle. There was a generous amount of mushrooms. The fries were hot so that already made it a winner for me. The only thing I didn't like was that I asked to NOT put mayo on the bun and they did. Yuck!! So I had to scrape it off and again, it wasn't a small dollop. My friends had: Combo plate - shrimp tempura & teriyaki beef (see picture) Saimin & Cheeseburger combo (see picture) Can't say anything about their selection but am assuming it was good since they ate it. Then for dessert we ordered a lilikoi chiffon pie & a banana chiffon pie which is in the shape of a square (see picture taken from their website). It has a macadamia nut crust bottom but seriously I couldn't taste the mac nuts. To me, it was just okay, but I think my friends liked theirs. Our waitress was very pleasant and friendly. She let us enjoy our food and take our time. She refilled our water glasses constantly so that was nice. The atmosphere is fine. Not too loud so you can have a decent conversation. It's a good place to eat by yourself or with a friend. If your group is large, the middle board between the booths are removed to accommodate. All genres of people were there so it's really a spot for all ages to dine at. Our meal was less than $100 with tip. read more

Decided to stop by after visiting Party City to try some oxtail saimin. The oxtail is cooked well, it was very soft and the noodles were perfect - but it was just too salty (I think it was the broth). For $22 it's a steal compared to other restaurants, the portion size is huge. They don't trim the fat so some pieces were a little gristly. We also tried the princess cut prime rib, it was very good! The broccoli and mash was cold tho? Maybe they forgot to heat it up? Overall Tanaka is okay, the service was good but I don't think I would come back. read more
Ahhhh....I no live here anymore. Sad face. But everytime I come back home to visit, Tanaka is one of my must stops. This location is huge, and there's always a long line/wait of local bruddahs and sistahs. So awesome to hear the pidgin when you've been stuck on the mainland listening to perfect white lady english (not that there's anything wrong with that -Seinfeld). On my last visit, I of course got the tanaka saimin and a mixed plate of teri chicken and roast pork. They fast over here and before long, we had our grub in front of us. The saimin is just straight up comforting to me, even on this muggy summer night in Hawaii. Perfect broth, awesome chewy noodles, and the perfect amount of mix ins. This place is better than my previous fave at Blvd Saimin. I was getting full, but nothing was gonna stop me from eating my plate. The yakitori chicken had a burst of flavor, and it's nice to rub it against the rice to make your own fried rice lol. Roast pork was tender and tasty, just the right amount of saltiness to it. Everything just lovely. I walked out a few lbs heavier, but boy was it worth it. 10/10 would recommend! read more

N WhenSo when don't feel like cooking.N we are in the area. We come here to eat. Food is great. All home made style. Taste n flavor is good. Place is clean n spacious with great atmosphere. Parking is so so. Some time you have to drive around to find parking. Service tonight was Ok. The lady look tired n burnt out. They were busy at the time. We waited 25 minutes but we didn't mind. The won ton min hit the spot for me. The hamburger is like homemade smash style n is tasty to to me. Onion rings g were good just by it self. Mac salad is great as well. Tha won ton min combo with the hamburger is one of my favorite. We like coming here because the food Taste like home style. See you again n again . read more
I love supporting local businesses and I've been trying to love dining at Tanaka Saimin, but I really don't. I've given them a try about three times over the course of a couple of years and the verdict is still 3 stars at best. The restaurant is large, and good for groups. However, they don't accept reservations. Good news is that your entire party doesn't have to be present for them to seat you. They serve up old school style saimin and local dishes such as chicken katsu and teri beef. They have a pretty extensive menu, so as an option, you can get a mix plate with two different entrees and your choice of two sides: rice, mashed potatoes, fried saimin, mac-potato salad, or tossed green salad. Lately, I've had the Crispy Shoyu Chicken, Korea Moco, Vegetable Tempura Platter, and the Tempura Ice Cream. The Crispy Shoyu Chicken was ok. The flavor was good. It wasn't as crispy as I thought it would be. It kind of had the consistency of chicken karaage. The Korea Moco was pretty satisfying. It consists of two eggs over kim chee fried rice, kalbi, crispy won ton, and sauce on the side. The portion is huge and well-worth the money. The Vegetable Tempura platter was really "bready" and therefore saturated in oil. The thing that did not and usually does not ever disappoint was the Tempura Ice Cream. A huge scoop of vanilla ice cream in a ball of fried dough rolled in cinnamon sugar is a great way to top off your meal. The ultimate reason for my 3-star rating versus a 4-star rating is for the service. They are S-L-O-W, slow! The last two times I've dined there, once for an early lunch (around 11am), and for dinner on a weeknight (6pm). Both days were fairly busy but the wait times for the food were extensive, and drinks weren't filled in a timely manner. However, the servers are friendly and provide good customer service. Good overall local restaurant to support with some uncommon menu items, but the sense of urgency/speed of service needs some work. read more

Our local O'hana from Oahu took us here for dinner, I didn't even know what Saimin was but this was absolutely amazing and tasty! Chad (our server) was humorous and friendly, it was very busy but he chatted with us to keep us entertained and since this place was very popular for its signature Saimin I had to try it the price was great it was around $16 and it was a lot of food. I was very full and satisfied after dinner here, will def come back when I'm back in Hawaii read more

This was the first time at this very popular saimin spot so I was looking forward to a great bowl of saimin. The soup base is so flavorful and there are plenty of goodies inside. My neighbor in the table next to us had the oxtail saimin so I had to take a photo of it because it looked so Ono! Our server was helpful and quick so we tipped her well. I will definitely be back!!! PS if you plan to get here by bus, take the #20 to Alakawa Street (next stop after Lowe's if you're coming from town). Going home the bus stop is across Nimitz and Alakawa and go left to the cement bench. read more

Tanaka Saimin is the place to go for great local food with good-sized portions. The food comes out accordingly, and each item comes out hot and flavorful. Service is excellent. Their oxtail soup is great on a rainy night and that's what we came for. The portion is big and we ended taking home half of it. The broth is savory and the long rice is a pleasant surprise. This is my oxtail soup go-to and the price at $22 is not ridiculous. They do charge $0.50 for containers which I don't think is necessary. read more

Haven't been here for a long time, parking is limited, located on Nimitz Highway by La Tour Bakery. The Won Ton Mien was old school taste. I think the owner use to own Boulevard Saimin on Dillangham in Kalihi. They were open for 64 years, This is the new location. Big menu selection, the place was pack by lunch time, went on a Monday. Old school diner vibe and very cozy feeling. I got the king cut prime ribs and I thought it was good for the price. Came in big portions that it was my lunch and dinner. Service when we went was quick and server was friendly. The steak was soft and not chewy. Sauces for the steak were on the lighter side which is good so it doesn't overpower the meat. I would give them 5 stars but tonight's meal was alittle disappointing. The Tanaka saimen was its usual delicious with the Teri beef (so tender) the shrimp tempura was okay. I got the combo plate with fried saimen and rices. The rice was mushy not able to eat that after today's lunch the rice was delicious. The yakitori chicken was yummy with the Teri sauce. The roast pork was not tender but you get two slices of it. I would have liked it better if it was tender. This is why it didn't get the five stars. However if I only came for the dessert it would have been hands down 5 stars. The egg custard was smooth and light with the Mac nut crust. The lilikoi chiffon cake was really so yummy yum yum. Went to have dinner again at around 7:30 on a Friday night and the place is packed. Wanted to get the prime rib but wasn't so lucky cause it was all sold out by the time we got there.
